    Good advice. One thing I'd like to add is if the rear end starts to fishtail, take your foot off the gas and let the car coast until you can correct it.

    • @NaturalDiversity
      @NaturalDiversity 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Zesty-sv4nr There were a few sketchy times but I successfully made it up 148 days. I sadly got buried on an insane snow storm/powder day and had to get towed out. I partially blame the ski resort for not plowing their parking lot once the whole day and also myself for driving up 6K elevation on the one day of the year that covered the entire city of Portland with snow. I had no business being up there with my low profile sports car that doesnt allow for chains. I since discovered a $5 shuttle at the base of the mountain with free parking and that'll probably be my go to for deep powder days. I should have also had kitty litter and a shovel in my trunk cause as soon as I was towed to a plowed road I drove the entire 80 miles home on snow covered roads with my blizzaks just fine. That said,
      i just paid off my car so I'm sticking with her but if I was shopping I'd definitely get an AWD for the pacific northwest. It just gives you better peace of mind with the right snow tires and less white knuckle driving up the volcano roads. Goodluck!

    I actually practice on spin out situations where if I hit a corner fast and I fish tail. I practice when it’s late out so it’s not a lot of cars and objects and I just drift corners catching my car in the snow to grasp a better understanding and feeling for the car. I own a bmw e46 btw

    Well said, man. I’ve been driving RWD in winter in Canada for the past 12 years or so, and I employ all these tips too. I also use studded tires, but although they help a lot, I’d say they are optional. I want to say that anyone could drive RWD in the winter, but sadly I think most people are too stupid. They’re not willing to make the necessary adjustments, and they BARELY scrape by in FWD or 4x4. They think a heavy foot is the answer to everything. In a way, this helps them be able to afford to stay stupid. Who knew? Nice video, man 👍

I will have weight over the rear tires because it is being converted into a campervan. I JUST bought all weather tires too. I live in Florida. But I will soon be traveling to other states in varying road conditions. Your video was very helpful. Is driving in snow different than driving on iced roads?

    • @BrapGenius

      Big Silver Bear glad the video helped. If the transit doesn’t have 4wd its gonna be harder without snow tires on it tbh, but still doable. In terms of snow vs ice, snow you’ll have traction as long as you don’t jerk the wheel and go at a slower speed. If there’s ice it doesn’t matter what you’re driving you’re gonna slide

    I live little outside of Pittsburgh and have driven AWD’s all my life (I’m 27). My current car is a C43 AMG, which I always drive in S+, and in the winter it definitely gets tricky since it sends most (not all since it’s a 4matic) to the rear. I’m very close to getting a 2021 Supra 3.0 premium as my only car (hopefully in the next week), do you think having it roughly a month before the weather goes to crap is enough time to get comfortable with it? It’s just making me a little nervous since I would’ve preferred to have the car a few months ago, but I’m just now finally close to closing the deal on the car. And being that Supra’s are hard to find around here in dealerships that aren’t already someone else’s car, I haven’t been able to test drive one

    • @BrapGenius
      @BrapGenius  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely be careful. You should have enough time to adjust, if you put sand in the back and get winter tires you’ll be okay. Remember you have the same amount of traction as any other vehicle if you’re not giving it throttle. The only time you’ll get yourself into trouble is if you give it too much gas especially in a turn. If you go slow and give a small amount of throttle youll do just fine. Good luck!!

    • @Phore043
      @Phore043 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No, downshifting and breaking with the engine are crucial for driving on snow.
      Breaking with brakes is essentially applying force to stop the wheels, more force, sooner you stop the wheels (in higher speed). And the bottom line is that while driving on snow, you never want to stop the wheels, even for a millisecond after which ABS kicks in - well generally you never want to stop the wheels, but on a dry road, that does not happen that easily and if it does, you get from the slide right away. On snow, if you lock the wheels in the corner for just a second, you can get to spin really fast.
      On the other hand, breaking with the engine is essentially just slowing down the wheels, so they can't lock. And since you want to keep slow speed all the time, it is much better to break with the engine, rather than breaking with brakes continuously. That is why it is a good idea to down-shift, break by the engine, and just use the breaks to slow it down when the car picks up speed.
      Even on a flat surface (at the intersection lights), it is better to slow down and be in control while approaching the stop. So either start breaking sooner but gently, or just down-shift, slow down by the engine and stop with breaks.
      It comes down to comfort, simplicity, and not wearing down the breaks. If you want to break with breaks effectively without locking the wheels (triggering ABS), you need to be careful, push them very gently and break lightly but for longer period of time, hence wearing the breaks off and also warming them up, so they lose effectiveness if you have long downhill ahead of you.
      If breaking with the engine, you just downshift and enjoy the ride, touching the breaks just to slow down a bit more for the corner or if you speed up too much.
      There is a reason, why cars have a function for downhill driving. You press it, it tells you to get to a certain speed (20-30 km/h) and to shift down to the second gear. Then it controls the car automatically. And how does it do that? By breaking with the engine, triggering auto break if it speeds up too much.

      Engine braking is what saved me so much In Winter now I have a automatic and I’m gonna miss that tool

      Brap Genius the best way to do it is to go in a snow covered parking lot or hill after it snows and try it. When you downshift on a snow covered road it will lock up your wheels that are powered. I have tried it all through the years. When you are on a slick surface and you downshift your wheels lock up, they slide. Wheels need to be moving on a snow covered surface to get the most grip. I feel like I’m rambling on, but I drive pretty aggressively and I have had front wheel drive, rear wheel, drive 4 wheel drive, and awd, manual transmission and automatic. Coming down a hill in the snow you will absolutely have the most control just using brakes. Braking using ur engine is only useful on non slick roads.
