GREATEST band ever. Keep listening and it will all click. Tim was an absolute genius.
I was always proud to have a phenomenally broad taste in music. Then I heard Cardiacs about 5 years ago. Can't say I now listen to much else other than Cardiacs because the full range of Tim's vision is such a satisfying experience to listen to. Tim's music makes other music sound... trivial. This is genuinely unique music delivered with 100% honesty and conviction. It sounds made up on the spot and spontaneous but you know that its complexity would have required exquisite craftsmanship.
Can see your point - Cardiacs including most of what you need from what other bands have done, still pushed the envelope to reveal what music also can be.
Still, I'd like to recommend the band Bent Knee that I think still does some of the same (obviously in a completely different way or it wouldn't be interesting)

Cardiacs are just glorious, Tim Smith was one of the most beautiful bastards to ever grace this planet, such a shame he never got all the credit he so richly deserved. Though in his last horrible years of illness he got to see just how much he meant to everyone who had fallen in love with his mad beautiful music, even being awarded a doctorate in music by the Scottish Royal Conservatory of Music and a massive go fund me campaign to help pay for his ongoing care all in the hope he could get back in some way to continue his work...sadly not to be. Did mention it before but do yourself a favour and watch the concert film all that glitters is a mares nest after your initial reactions and be blown away at what they could do live...welcome to the pond

The song that got me into Cardiacs back in 1988. Still my favourite song by my favourite band. RIP Tim Smith, you genius bastard!

I was skeptical when I saw this, but I have to say I did like it. I can't put my finger on it. The vocals reminded me of Pete Shelley, the music kinda XTC, Depeche Mode, Zappa, Gentle Giant, thrown in a blender. In other words, truly unique! Yeah, this was worth checking out, thanks!

They were even better live…. Always had a great sound and spectacular show starting with the vile countdown even in small venues…. The pond was a glorious place to be and everyone knew all the words
How many times were you able to see Tim and the band live?
@@intothemusic908 More than any other band… I’d say over 50, festivals, small venues, large venues, used to follow them round the UK mostly in the 80s but sent them a fair few times in the 90s and into the 2000s…. They were so tight and had an amazing sound engineer
I'm 48 and discovered Cardiacs about half my life ago when I saw them in a local pub which they were playing for one of their crew's birthday. Changed my life - best band of all time and I missed the first 20 years or so - but was fortunate enough to see them live about 5 times.
I knew OF Cardiacs and then heard the song ”Big Ship” in the early/mid 90’s and have absolutely adored this band ever since.
I'm long due for another Cardiacs reaction.
Big Ship is one of my MANY favourite Cardiacs songs. I saw them play live SO many times between 1989-1992. Easily the best gigs I have EVER been to...the electric atmosphere, the theatricality, the vibrant energy...dancing like a maniac in the crazy crowd of vagabonds...some of the most joyous moments of my life. It's literally impossible to describe the beauty of it all.

This was one of the songs appearing on their third cassette album, The Seaside, released in 1983 I think, that was later re-recorded for inclusion on this album. I got my hands on a copy of the cassette after discovering them in 1986, first in a windswept field outside Oxford, and then a few months later at the Marquee Club in London. Imagine, packed into a heaving crowd in a small club letting all this wash over you, and just knowing you were in the presence of something really quite special.
That's genuine flute you're hearing there by the way, they employed quite the range of instrumentation, though for live performances some of these would be reproduced on synth and sequencer, possibly in part just to save space in the van. ;)

That was the Summer Solstice Festival we put on in Oxford Port Meadow 1986, I still have a poster from it which we had plastered Oxford with, but I can't post the image here
The most amazing band, so glad you’ve reviewed this, a lot of different styles from one song to the next and within the same song quite often! Tim was indeed a genius, saw them many times, I’ve just subscribed. Look forward to more cardiacs reviews hopefully

Highly highly recommend listening to this whole album, or the album "Guns". Great starting points to get into the band.
A lot of people laud the album Sing to God, which I love too, but I really do think the psychedelic rock of Guns is their magnum opus. So much creativity crammed into 12-and-a-half songs.
That does make you think though... every album can be their best album depending on how you feel that day!

Hello. I was the one who chose tarred and feathered... and although most folk said it wasn't the best first song to react to, it was the first song I heard by them that got me into them .. so that's why I chose it. Yes there are loads of 'better ones' but I chose it because it was massively different than Arctic monkeys, Coldplay or stone roses etc. ....anyway. I've watched your other vids and glad you're liking them now. Cheers.

I think you're bang on about the lyrics by the way. It's difficult to interpret a lot of Tim's lyrics, especially in the later albums where he gets more cryptic and starts using some strange anachronistic grammar.
Highly recommend RES next for its absolute compositional mastery, or Is This The Life? (their only commercial success) for something more straightforward. Or, since you haven't had a crack at their later stuff yet, Fiery Gun Hand and Odd Even are both great picks as well.
I definitely heard a kitchen sink being played on a few Cardiacs tunes.🤔

Great song, expertly composed. The brass arrangement is haunting - very English, eccentric, melancholic. I like how it tricks around with the 6/8 12/8 rhythm.

STOP LISTENING: you will waste years (many of them in my case) understanding their music. But you will never fully get it. And you listen again. And again. And again. At the point of being obsessed. And you'll eventually really love it. Was it worth it...? Probably yes, so be warned
I can see what you're saying. True story . . . two nights ago I had a dream where this song was playing and that repeat line, "That's the way we all go", was getting louder and louder until I woke up. Thing is, I wanted to hear more.

They had to do other jobs to survive, and all of them had this amount of music to offer the world - so it's natural enough to feel exceptional if you know there's all this in you. But then that's insulting to the people around you - many of them friends. Insulting to many fans, too? So there's this sense of simply being aware of being something special, as a fact (a cold fact, not a mean vanity, something that brings others down as you go up), and of also being a part of humanity, of not being so special that you somehow deserve preferential treatment (the way so many people with some kind of currently in-demand talent feel). So that feeling of being "part of the family", but also being different, and then dealing with the conflict that puts you in if you don't just go puffing yourself up, all-superior, and "be better than the common herd". It's a fairly unusual way of looking at the world, I think? Most people who feel special feel like they deserve to be "above" others. It's what monkeys do, after all. But some stay human, don't want to to "climbing". If you get more into this music, you'll see it's very friendly. It might get a bit crazy, but it doesn't push anyone out, the way some complex music does.

(Maybe Sarah had a part in this, too. She's just had a painting approved by the Royal Academy, I heard; and they don't just give that away to anyone; it's quite serious recognition of her as an artist.)
