Why American Diabetics Go to Mexico and Craiglist for Insulin | NYT Opinion

  • In the video Op-Ed above, those affected by Type 1 diabetes argue that insulin is unaffordable, leaving diabetics to take risks like rationing insulin or buying from strangers online. Drug prices in the U.S. have risen dramatically in recent years, but with no alternatives to insulin, diabetics are caught in the crosshairs: Missing a single dose could land them in the hospital, and lead to death in as little as a few days.
Patent laws allow pharmaceutical companies to block competition and prevent affordable generics, and so-called safe harbor regulations legalize kickbacks between the makers of insulin and the middlemen who distribute it, ultimately raising prices for the consumer.
Colorado has recently capped insulin copays, and Congress is actively investigating why the price of insulin is so high. Ely Lilly, one of the top three insulin producers, has also announced a half-priced alternative to its top-selling product. But this is not enough: Insulin must be affordable and accessible in order to prevent more deaths from a perfectly manageable disease.

As a type one Diabetic my biggest fear is not having insurance, it's happened to my family before and nothing eats your money quite like having to pay for a month of diabetes supplies, let me break it down...
    Around $300 per bottle-Insulin (2-4 bottles a month)
    $1 a test strip-Test Strips (5-10 a day, making roughly 150-300 a month)
$15 a box-Syringes (that the cheapest way to deliver insulin, but if ur like me you'd have to pay for VERY expensive pump and CGM supplies or switch to lower quality care)
This would mean a month as a diabetic with no insurance could be upwards of $1,500 a month, for many people that's their rent or double it. People are being forced to make terrible sacrifices so big companies like Eli Lilly can make money off our dependency. I feel deep sorrow for Alec and his family, I am so sorry for their UNNECESSARY loss. This is why capitalism has no place in healthcare.

Anyways the pharmacist was really cool he was like you should just try buying this at the Walmart pharmacy it will probably be a lot cheaper. So the next month when it was time for me to purchase my insulin I went to Walmart and guess how much my same exact insulin was? $25!! Im forever greatful to that pharmacist for being so honest. This is in India .
Edit- I went to the pharmacy to check the prices. Insulin retails for about 140 rupees for a 40ml vial. That's 2 USD for 40 ml. These are prices for private pharmacies. Government pharmacies sell for lesser prices.

My daughter has T1D and I’m terrified what will happen when she no longer will be on my insurance and moves out of state. I can’t even fathom what her pump supplies are going to cost her. Not kidding when I say I’m stockpiling every supply reorder whether she needs it or not. I’d rather she have months to figure out the system than weeks. Insulin is something that can’t be stockpiled so well. Has to be refrigerated, and has a shelf life. Canada will be her best bet.

This reminds me of my experience in San Diego. I visited the border between San Diego and Mexico and saw so many people crossing the border from the U.S. to Mexico through a port of entry. Confused, I talked to a border-crosser and asked him why he is leaving for Mexico, he said with his wage (in San Diego) he can only afford a small apartment in San Diego, but he can afford a farm in Mexico.
Free flow of goods and people are the ultimate checks and balances against shady merchants and governments: if you don't find the situation favorable to your liking, just leave. Also, this is why living in the tri-state area is so good: you can live in a state where property tax is low, and go buy stuff where sales taxes are low.
