Hellraiser and Hellraiser 2 are brilliant. The cenobites aren't the antagonists; they're barely even bad guys. This is something the rest of the franchise couldn't even fathom.
I agree. In fact when I was a child, I was a big horror movie fan, but we had never seen Hellraiser. I only knew of it from commercials on rented VHS tapes and I always assumed it was just about pinhead. It wasn’t until I was an adult and I actually watched the movie and realized it’s really not even about him. He’s a side character at best. Great film though.
They got desperate with the 3rd one. With how Freddy and Jason had fallen off, they didn't want it to happen with Pinhead, but every decision they made did exactly that.
Hellraiser and Hellbound Hellraiser 2 are two of my favorite movies. I loved the reboot and want to see a sequel. 3 and 4 are a lot of fun. And, despite a lot of trash films, the Hellraiser franchise is still my favorite 🤘
Problem with Hellraiser as a franchise is that it techniclly tells the same story in every movie with a few little additions. If they made it more of an anthology series and took ideas from the comics then they could look at multiple creative ideas based in the Hellraiser lore. Interesting to see the movies have the Harrowers in it, these are a group of people that go into hell to rescue innocent souls from the cenobites. I like the first two and Infernos.....the rest are fun for what they are.
I will always love Bloodlines, I know it isn't the best Hellraiser film but it holds a special place in my heart. You can find what is supposed to be the original cut on TH-cam and it is so much better than what we got.
I had always found part 4 to be better than part 3. I got the 3-box set from Arrow when it released and at that time considered it perfect, even without part 4. But now I have gotten the newer 4K 4-box set. I didn't know it had an alternate cut of part 4. That makes me excited to want to watch it.
Fully agree... And Terri Farrell was frigg'n *AWESOME* , I am honestly shocked that with her natural beauty and genuine acting style that she didn't do more (and yes, on DS9 she was great too! 😁) IIRC, it's been a while, but wasn't part V something about a detective investigating something? I seem to remember that I rather liked that one...
I used to own the Clive Barker's Undying game and it was awesome it had some weird ideas but the concept was good, I remember how the real painting look inside the mansion after looking at it with the stone.
“It is simply a series of ugly and bloody episodes strung together one after another like a demo tape by a perverted special effects man” Ebert would have loved Terrifier
@@tkmmkt6569 neither was anything after Hellbound...but out of all of the sequels from part 3 on, the reboot was was the best out of all of em. At least in my opinion. This isn't bashing the other sequels either, theres stuff to enjoy in all of em
Hellraiser is my second favorite horror series with a horror icon after Freddy. Noteworthy is that Freddy, Pinhead (Cenobites) and Pennywise are scarier than people give them credit for. Yes, Freddy makes jokes but he´ll get you no matter what in your dreams and you´ll have to figure how to beat him. Pennywise is a god like entity so good luck there. And Pinhead (Cenobites) is a demon that also is hard to get away with....even his "basic" attack is the chains. Good luck trying to run and he summoning hooked chains from anywhere to get you. I agree that the first 4 are important because, overall, they have the best quality since they got to theaters. Bloodline is my favorite followed by 2, then 1 and 3. It´s a shame Part 3 is as cheesy as it got because it had potential: what could have they done if Pinhead and the Cenobites had just taken the city. As for the rest, as long as Doug Bradley is there I acknowledge them. Even though in Seeker Pinhead is barely there and Hellworld is as of nothing had happened. Also, I´ve learned to place them to watch in a chronological order: - 1 trough 3. - Skip Bloodline. - Inferno till Hellworld. - Bloodline Bloodline ends everything in the future. So, after 3 continue watching the rest as they, obviously take place in the present/past and then end in Bloodline. Not only is set in the future but Pinhead is defeated there.
The Cenobites are iconic but I've always disliked them being given human origins in the second movie. In the first movie they have a wonderfully creepy otherworldliness, and I loved them being strange and disturbing entities from another dimension, but making them human took away almost all of this for me. (I also disliked that they lost that fight so easily!) Keeping them mysterious adds to the horror in my opinion, though Hellraiser is far from the only franchise that has weakened things by providing origins.
Hellraiser was a throwback into the 70s where horror was raw and unfiltered. Horror by the end of the 80s was completely mainstream with just a few movies trying to stand out. Hellraiser 2 was this weird ambitious middle thing that tried to find the right balance between mainstream and the roots of the first. They created something unique with it that still stands out today. Hellraiser 3 made Pinhead a slasher villain with one liners and an attitude. The lore pieces were good, but the movie put Hellraiser finally completely into the mainstream landscape. Hellraiser 4 was a complete mess and disaster. The entire thing was cursed from creation to finish line. It’s a weird movie that was ruined behind the curtains. The next installments were hit and miss with Pinhead just added to hold a grip over the franchise. They reached from mediocre to atrocious, but at least you could have fun with them. Revelations was an absolute shit show. With a budget less than 300.000 dollars and actors who couldn’t act it was made to fail. Hellraiser Judgment had a foreseeable plot, some shock horror and introduced angels to lore. A forgettable movie with a nice new concept that in better hands could have worked. The 2022 one is a weird mix of the second era of the franchise and the second film. It works and gives us finally after over two decades a solid Hellraiser film. I like the franchise, but it is hit and miss. It was ruined by greed, the lack of vision and studio interferences.
Hellraiser is really more of a one hour episode than a full length movie. It wenr south fast after the first one. Its a cool idea but not much after that.
How can you not mention that Andrew Robinson played the Scorpio Killer in Dirty Harry!!!! Not horror I know but based on the Zodiac it still deserved a shout out!!!! Oh and this series absolutely sucks with the exception of the original and the recent remake (still under whelming but decent) absolutely suck.
Your history is distorted. Only became a thing from VHS rentals. Reboot failed because it was lame. I actually know the twins from 3. Cousins of cousin actually.
To break it down to basic terms as WTF happened to the series : as it went continued, it strayed further & further away from its original premise! Sadly, this happens to many continuing series/remakes! Stay with the basic elements that made it successful to begin with & build/branch on from that, instead of trying to make/recreate it into something that it never was, to lazily ride meritless upon the "name" alone!

Being a Hellraiser fan I'm still upset we didn't get that Pinhead cameo at the end of Freddy vs Jason because of rights issues
Me too. And I didn´t want a versus movie between all of them. But just to had him there would have been incredible.
Now there's a piece of trivia I've grown up with. I believe he was going to arrive and say: "Gentlemen, what seems to be the matter?" Gold.
Hellraiser is my JAM. T'hanks for sharing. This was AMAZING!
Rock on!

I named my oldest Daughter Kirsty. She grew up to be real Hellraiser .
"Come to me damn you!! " Who was doing Frank's voice? Hilarious 😂😂😂😂

I remember seeing tv ad in 95 and thinking "pinhead in space? Wtf?" Then I saw it. I agree. Far better than 3 in many ways.
Pinhead's reaction to the franchise becoming direct-to-video: "NO. DON'T-DO-THAT!"
Remake, sequel, or whatever, I just want one more Hellraiser movie with the great Doug Bradley.
The 3rd is my favorite out of the first 2 🤷♂️. My other favorite is inferno, love watching that in the middle of the night.
Bloodlines is my second favorite in the franchise
Clive Barker’s Jericho is one of my favorite games. I don’t care how flawed it is.
and rise again. the last one was pretty awesome

The tortured Souls figure line was also made by Todd McFarlane
There's nothing i miss more than hearing "fkin Weinsteins..." anytime that cursed name has to be mentioned
the unused score by Coil is pretty fantastic
Hellraiser III is still a good movie
Andrew Robinson was also the nastiest killer of the 70s: Scorpio in Dirty Harry.
Him whining about his rights cracked me up.
The greatest movie villain/psycho of all time.
Surprised Pinhead didn't go through time like Freddy Kruger did in Freddy's Dead.
The thief of always was a book of his art and poetry I recommend
“It is simply a series of ugly and bloody episodes strung together one after another like a demo tape by a perverted special effects man”
Ebert would have loved Terrifier
I Have Both Hellraiser And Hellraiser 2 On DVD And Watched All Six Hellraiser Movies Revelations And Judgment I Skipped Those Two.
There's 11 Hellraiser movies.
Part five was last great one doesn't get enough love Craig schaffer was amazing like Oscar worthy performance for real
Hellbound is my favorite. Its so dark. I really liked Inferno too.
I might be in the non popular opinion of this, but I prefer Bloodline to part 3.
But that's just me.
Me too. We''re not alone either.
The first two are clearly good, but after that one that really stands out is hellraiser inferno
I FKN LOVE this channel. How are you guys not WAY bigger?!
Thank you!
The third movie is the best one in the franchise as far as I'm concerned
Hellraiser reboot is criminally under appreciated
Is that objective or subjective?
It’s not as good as the original so what’s the point of it exactly?
@@tkmmkt6569 neither was anything after Hellbound...but out of all of the sequels from part 3 on, the reboot was was the best out of all of em. At least in my opinion. This isn't bashing the other sequels either, theres stuff to enjoy in all of em
Unlikable characters, significant changes to the Cenobites MO, and their make-up was over designed.
It did nail the tone, though.
I actually like bloodlines the best.
As do I. I don't really agree with a lot of his assessments or interpretations.
Absolutely Loved Loved The 1ST 2, 4TH Was Fair, Rest YUK.

12:40 I always say Jack Klugman Should have Directed Part 3 After Randall.
The cenobites are the modern day god hand from berserk

Larger than life characters, like the cenobites or The Joker, need origins otherwise they're just caricatures.

Pinhead didn't disrespect the church worse than Vincent McMahon did years ago. 😅
I think a "WTF happened to Peeping Tom" would be a really interesting episode
First two where great, everything else was crap. That’s it .
53:40 that’s some kinda dumb music for the subject🤔
The NPAA ruins everything
The first and second remain memorable and groundbreaking. The rest, meh.
& he is a painter 2
Considering Barker is gay and into S & M...
How do you not mention Andrew Robinson's epic run as Garak on star trek ds9?

I saw the latest version.. and there was like only ONE good scene.. I turned it off.
The fall was having a female Pinhead.
Never understood these movies or movies like them...guess they're an aquired taste
Your history is distorted. Only became a thing from VHS rentals. Reboot failed because it was lame. I actually know the twins from 3. Cousins of cousin actually.
Tell us more about how you know nothing.... twins in 3? Yeah you're lying.
Cool story bro
@nialllappin4159 what a liar huh?
Always laugh at bible bashers who are happy doing almost anything except go against religion
