Who Sold Joseph Into Slavery?

  • A common argument is that Genesis has two stories of Joseph being sold into slavery. A later redactor stitched them together to form the current story, but is this really what happened?

Thanks Mike. Joseph is my favourite character beside our Saviour & Lord.
I'm grateful that I'm not a biblical scholar, theologian or textual expert. All God asks me is to believe in Him. I leave the rest to those with the special giftings in these areas.
    Happy Advent 🎄🕯️🕯️🎄
May Christ be born anew within each of us. 🙏

"Now Israel (the sun after the summer solstice), loved Joseph (the crops as ingathered in November), more than all his children (the four months of summer), because he was the child of his old age (the close of summer), and he made him a coat of many colors " (the leaves and fruits of autumn) Gen. 37. 3. Therefore his brethren hated him. Besides Joseph dreamed two dreams; In the first he was binding sheaves in the field with his brethren, "when, lo, his sheaf stood upright, while his brothers' sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to his sheaf.' In the second the sun, moon and stars, (zodiacal constellations), make obeisance to him (the twelfth) Gen. 37.9 9. Both were to the same import, viz., that all must subsist upon the stores laid by for winter. "And his brethren (the eleven zodiacal constellations, exclusive of Sagittarius) envied him, but his father observed the saying" (Gen. 37.11). After this Joseph's father sent him out of the vale of Hebron (autumn, when grain was sowed), to Shechem (Taurus of spring, when the grain ripens), to look after his brethren. On his way the poor boy got lost (the grain was not up yet), but a certain man (Aquarius) found him, (i.e., the grain began to grow) and sent him on his way to Dothan (the latter rain of spring, when wheat harvest is approaching). At Dothan Joseph found his brethren, who were looking for him. Afar off they espied him, when they said to one another: "Behold this dreamer cometh," and, conspiring together, took him (the gathered crop) and threw him into a pit (granary).' Scarcely had they done this when some Midianites (men of strife) merchantmen, coming along, they drew him up out of the pit (such are used to-day in that country for granaries) and sold him to the Ishmaelites (the people in winter). To exculpate themselves, they having dipped it in the blood of a kid (the goat of December) slain for that purpose, exhibited poor Joseph's bloody coat to their father; i.e. they showed the reddish hue of the frost-killed vegetation. The Ishmaelites, themselves Egyptians, took Joseph (the grain) down into Egypt (winter), where they sold him to Pharaoh (winter sun), king of Egypt. Here, the Lord being with him, Joseph prospered exceedingly, and, being withal extremely beautiful, he drew upon him the lustful eyes of his mistress, who boldly accosted him, saying, "lie with me." But Joseph's virtue, like Abimelech's, was not to be overcome. The woman, however, persevered, and seizing his garment, again importuned him, saying, “Lie with me." This time Joseph fled, leaving his garment in her hands.
Here the Sun being in Virgo, the earth (Joseph) was on the opposite side, over against Virgo. Passing into the winter hemisphere, the earth or Joseph leaves its green cloak in the hands of Virgo, Potiphar's wife. It has often been said: ' ' Hell has no fury like a woman scorned. ' '

This has nothing and everything to do with the video but please listen if you want to otherwise leave it alone and ignore it. Hello my name is Justin and I'm a fellow Christian and Apologist but I'm also a college student. I'm not a closed minded Theist as I have nothing against Atheists or unbelievers as I speak to them often to understand their reasons for unbelief but we as Christians are convinced of God's Existence due to many real factors). I'm not trying to convert anyone or convince anyone to become Christians as that's The Holy Spirit's job to help people believe but only explain why I believe in Jesus Christ. There's actually evidence of God's Existence in Christianity. First of all there's proof that Jesus of Nazareth existed in history since the writings of Tacitus, Josephus Flavius, Pliny the younger and other historical documents prove that He was living two thousand years ago that even scholars both religious and Atheists agree with historically speaking but not that He's The Divine Son of God because obviously they don't.
I'm going to give you historical and archeological evidence for God's Existence as The Scriptures have prophecies that predate the events recorded in them by several millennia including Matthew, Hosea and Zechariah which prophesy accurately of the people of Israel becoming a nation again after over 1900 years of being scattered around the nations since the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. spoken of by Christ in Matthew 23:29-24:3 and returning to their homeland after The Holocaust with Jerusalem as their capital in 1948 exactly as Jesus The Christ said. The prophets including Daniel spoke of the time where several world empires would arise and fall including the Babylonian kingdom, Medes and Persians, Roman Empire, and Saladin and the Muslims which went in consecutive order for the past few millennia. The people of Israel becoming a nation after The Holocaust in 1948 (ironically the melting point of gold as God compares Israel to gold that's tested in fire in Zechariah 13:8 and Jeremiah 16:15) exactly how Jesus The Christ said would happen since God us everything to come in The Scriptures and not just because people were working towards as Atheists claim which are impossible for any regular man to predict.
Just before anyone says Christianity is a white man's religion made to oppress blacks during slavery you obviously aren't aware that the first Christians were Jews in The Middle East and that Christianity just like any religion can be used by evil and corrupt people to oppress others but you forget that the first Abolitionists/Civil Rights activists were Christians who sought to abolish slavery, racism, segregation, injustice and prejudice throughout American history. Jesus The Christ loves you enough not to give you what we all deserve which is God's Wrath by His Own Blood. Charles Darwin didn't originally come up with The Theory of Evolution over 200 years ago as it is mentioned in the writings of Ancient Greeks who believed in Demons that gave knowledge to philosophers.
Evolution makes no sense when nothing has evolved after thousands of years of human history and supposedly the first creature came from primordial sludge several millions of years
ago funny how they won't believe that God an Eternal Almighty Spirit Being created us from the Earth) which came from a supermassive expansion of matter at high temperature that inexplicably created everything in the known universe that supposedly came from nothing billions of years ago. How did the organs evolve before there were bones, skin, substance and how did any creatures see before eyes evolved? I've studied evolution and abiogenesis in the past and read Darwin's " Origin of The Species" I've studied evolution and abiogenesis in the past and read Darwin's " Origin of The Species" and I'm not convinced of but not macro or micro Evolution because there's no evidence of it nor clear observable examples of it where living creatures evolve into other kinds of species plus the fact that fossils don't show evidence of evolution and genetic entropy rules out evolution. The question begs how did two genders evolve from a common ancestor with a perfectly hospitable and sustainable environment with breathable oxygen and resources to survive on inexplicably? Atheists have the burden of proof to explain how everything came to be and why our existence is possible without the Existence of God from an godless perspective just as Christians have to provide evidence of God's Existence and the validity of His Word.
Evolution requires life to already exist in order to take any effect in living organisms so it doesn't account for the existence of Life and reality. Also evolution is impossible because it goes against The Law of entropy and the second Law of thermodynamics because evolution makes things better whereas nothing continues to get better but decays and turns to absolute destruction in the end. Mark Ridley an Evolutionist said "No evolutionist whether gradualist or punctuationist uses the fossil record as evidence in favor of The Theory of Darwinian Evolution as opposed to special Creation". God's Existence is made perfectly known and observable in the universe as demonstrated in His Handiwork in the intelligently designed manner that Creation was made, human consciences and consciousness historical and archaeological evidence of God's Word being valid history, fulfillment of Bible Prophecies God in His Holiness and Righteousness could give us what we deserve in Hell for our since but He's merciful to give us free will to choose to accept or reject His gift of salvation by grace through faith in His Son Jesus. I don't mean this is any condescending manner but if you'd like to discuss The Scriptures with me or have me listen to your view on anything my instagram account is Savage Christian Kombatant.

Conflating British with English is pretty controversial in the UK nowadays. Every English person is British, but not every British person is English, and those who aren't don't tend to like being called English. Also it would be equally true to refer to the colonists as both Americans and British prior to independence, and to talk about the fighting being between British rebels and loyalists.

    • @christopherflux6254

@@patrickholt2270 As a British person I know this. But we wouldn’t say that an 18th century document calling the same army both British and English is contradicting itself.
And sometimes when we refer to groups of people (like armies) by nationality, we don’t mean every single individual in the group is of that nationality. We often mean either the group is led by or predominantly made up of people of that nationality. So the media might talk about English fans at the World Cup, but that doesn’t mean everyone at the tournament supporting England is actually English.

70 Sevens! (I spent about 4-12 hours every day for a month researching and fact checking claims and reading historical documents on these passages. Now they're my favourite.)
The translators goofed when they put Week in there. The 'week' is actually a word that means 'A Unit of 7', like how we use Dozen for 12. It's a heptad.
      Buckle Up!
God sent the understanding to Daniel in this way to correspond to Israel's 70 years in captivity to Babylon because they skipped the 7 Year Sabbath for the Fields (aka the Fallow Sabbaths by me) for 490 Years. (Jeremiah 25:11-12, and 2 Chronicles 36:21-22)
In this way, the next 490 Years including the 400 years of silence (no overt prophets) would be linked intrinsically to Israel's sins and rebellion against God.
What follows in Daniel 9 and 11 is the most accurate and packed set of prophecies ever seen. Secular scholars claim Daniel was written around 100BC, because it is too accurate, despite all analysis of the language and archeology pointing to the 530sBC date.
From the Decree to Rebuild Jerusalem with moat and streets, there will be 69 Sevens. (Dan 9:25)
A couple decrees are given to rebuild the Temple, but the decree to rebuild the Walls is given in 444BC.
      The Clock has begun.
The 7 Sevens are not explicitly explained, but evidence points towards it being the Timeline for the rebuilding of the Temple, which we know by Josephus(I think?) took 45-49 years to rebuild, and the process is seen in Ezra and Nehemiah. Built during times of trouble. 7x7=49
Daniel's vision describes the rise and falls of multiple kingdoms, the coming of Alexander the Great and his death, the rise of his Four Generals (the Goat with Four Horns that go to the Four Winds) with a sharp focus on the Seleucid and Ptolemaic Empires and their back and forth battles, detailing the victors and losers again and again, which has been backed up by archeology (up to the Fifth Syrian War).
The vision revealed that the Eleventh King of the North (Seleucid) would then go on to oppress the Jews and set himself against God in a way no one else had done before him.
Antiochus IV got into power by using his roman allies and political acumen to trade himself as a political prisoner for a relative, gain passage from Rome to his family's empire, then ousted one relative, became regent for his almost infant relative, and then killed him and crowned himself king (eleventh horn pushing out the other three). He did many things, but of note to the Jews, he removed the high priest and installed his own toady for cash, having the guy funnel money from the Temple to him. He also tried putting pressure on the Jews to turn away from Judaism, but this was only the beginning.
Skipping ahead to the relevant bit.
He fought repeated wars against the Ptolemys, continuing the several hundred year feud. He was ordered to stop by a Roman named Gaius Popillius Laenas. Antiochus IV said he wanted to go back to his advisors and confer, Gaius drew a circle in the sand and said Antiochus IV should give an answer before he leaves it. This is where we get the phrase "A line in the sand."
Antiochus IV relied on his connections to Rome, and having lived there as a political hostage for many years, knew what their military was capable of.
Maccabees (useful for history, but I haven't done any research into any theological claims within it) details what happens next.
Antiochus IV left in a rage, returning towards the North, where his kingdom was. On the way, he stopped in Israel, which was starting to rebel because they heard rumors Antiochus IV had died, and wanted to bring back a proper Temple institution. Already unhappy, embarrassed, and a little bit crazy, Antiochus IV slaughtered 80k Jews, took 40k prisoner, and sold another 40k into slavery (if I remember correctly, i'm low on sleep).
Further, he had a pig sacrificed in the Temple, its blood sprinkled over everything, he stole the relics and the gold/silver etc precious metals, forced the Jews to eat the sacrificed pig... and erected an Idol of Zeus inside the Temple (SUPER IMPORTANT: THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION). Further, Antiochus IV had coins minted with his face one one side, and Zeus (and Nike) on the other with the phrase "Epiphanes" meaning God Manifest. He forbade the Jews their Religious Feasts, tried to stop circumcision, sacrifices, and tried to force worship of other gods, including Zeus (who he claimed to be incarnate).
Antiochus IV died out on the campaign trail, sick to his gut with rot or illness, in his tent.
The 2300 Mornings and Evenings is a reference to the daily sacrifices as the Second Temple. The Zeus statue etc was put up in 167BC.
The Maccabean Revolt begins, and the Second Temple is cleansed and rededicated in 164BC.
2300/ 2(Morning and Evening) = 1,150 Days, or 3.5 Years, the length of the Second Temple being profaned.
The Second Temple Rededication resulted in a yearly celebration all have heard the name of: Hanukkah.
BUT the best is yet to come!
Daniel was perfectly right about all the facts up to this point, what comes next?
Daniel says the Messiah, the Prince, will arrive at the end of the 7 and 62 Weeks.
      Decree Issued: Artaxeres I, March 5th 444BC.
      7x7 = 49
      7x62 = 434
      49 + 434 = 483.
      484 / 360 (Jewish Calendar, they used Leap Months) = 173, 880 Days.
What happened on March 30, 33AD?
      Luke 19 happened!
Jesus rode into Jersualem on a donkey, as a KING would during peacetimes, praised as royalty by the Jews with palm fronds etc. fulfilling the vision of Zechariah.
4 days later? He is executed on the cross, fulfilling Daniel's 'cut off' which is a specific phrase usually used for execution. And Jesus 'had nothing', which was another phrase often used for 'has progeny or heirs'.
      BOOM!
      69 Sevens complete.
Now, what about the 70th Seven?
Well, Daniel's prophecy points to 7+62 Sevens until the Anointed One (Jesus Messiah) arrived.
The few straggling bits in Daniel appear to be end times details, which Jesus mentions in Matthew, 'When you see the Abomination of Desolation standing there as described by Daniel, (let the reader understand)'.
Seems like the big bad at the End Times is going to do a repeat of Antiochus IV's profaning the Temple.
But, the Second Temple was destroyed in 70AD. And so many wait for a Third Temple to be built, or a building re/dedicated towards this purpose.
      (You are Here)
      Whew....
Thanks for coming along this wild ride of prophecy with me if you actually read all the way through. This was the Abridged Prophecies of Daniel 8, 9, 11, 12.
This was the minimal amount of details necessary. There are enough details, names, dates, etc that anyone interested can start doing their own research. I have my notes on it all, but I haven't figured out how I want to make them available.
I found a few people that do a quick summary similar to the one above in video format (Skip Heitzig, Mike Winger) here on youtube.
If you think this is interesting, and want to research more prophecies in the Bible, check out Ezekiel and Tyre, and what alexander the great did there. And then look at modern pictures of Tyre to see where the best fishing spot is.
God Bless the Berean Thinker, the one who studies, investigates, and tests Scripture.
God Bless the Innocent Heart, the one who believes and seeks a close relationship with God.
And God Bless you, who are struggling.
I believed in God for many years, because of a spiritual experience. But, I never really shared my faith. I wasn't afraid to pray in public, nor did I feel awkward, but I never stepped forward to share it with other people in person.
When God prompted me to start with studying Wisdom, I went down an endless path of learning new things in the Bible. Like a nesting Doll, if you're persistent, you'll find wondrous things to learn.
The Archeology is impossible without God, the prophecies are entirely too accurate. (Ezekiel - Tyre Hosea - Sticks Jereimiah - Babylon Joshua - Jericho, Hazor's Ash Layer = Within 40 years of Moses!)
Learning the prophecies, and how they align with History, and the textual criticisms and defenses in detail gives me the confidence to look someone in the eye, and not only say "I believe," but, "So should you, and here's why."
I want to end on a note of Love: When all these things demonstrate the reality of the Bible, we are left confronting a very hard Truth. God is real. And, it's the God of the Bible and no other. No other system of religion, or collection of prophecies is so seamless and accurate. And that means the Creator of the Universe Loves you.
He wants a beautiful relationship of Father and Son, and King and Subject all in one. He Loves you not because of anything you've done, or will do, but because you are His. You can turn away, you can put up barriers, you can say "I won't come home until I'm clean enough."
But, He's the richest being in the Universe (which He created), a little hot water for a shower is no less than what any parent would give their child when they show up at the door muddy and hurt. He doesn't make you pay a toll or pray seven times before He begrudgingly allows you to use the shower. He brings you in and ushers you into safety, cleaning, and holiness.
As Jesus, said, if even an evil person would do as much for their child, what more would God do for you?
Why wouldn't you want to learn everything you could about a Friend-King you loves you?

This peaked my interest as my current research is in the Gen 37-50.
It is true that scholarship has largely moved away from dividing the text into J and E. However, that doesn't mean that the Joseph Story is then viewed as a unity.
It's nearly universally agreed on that chapters 38 and 49 are later additions to the story. And there's majority agreement that large sections of 39, 46-48 and even sections of 50 (if not all) are expansions to the core Joseph Story (the diaspora novella).
The Ishmaelites/Midiantes being the same is plausible, but it's certainly not clear. The use of Ishmaelites in the Judges passage could be adjectival. One also has to contend with the fact that one of the oldest interpretations, a 2nd-3rd century Targum reads them as distinct peoples, as does Rashi in the Medieval period. Others saw them as the same, such as Rashbam and Ibn Ezra. But the diversity of opinion is evidence that it was not clear from the Hebrew linguistics of the passage alone.
That said, I do think it's plausible they were the same... but it's out of a lack of a better explanation - not an abundance of evidence. Another possibility advocated by scholars is that the Midianites were part of a redactional expansion (not a source) with the aim of obscuring the fact that the brothers sold Joseph into slavery in order to better establish that it was God who brought Joseph to Egypt. Though that has its own issues as well.

@Jordan Steele I am genuinely having trouble parsing what you're trying to say lol, help me through
"The language of the Rig Veda was not updated."
"Sanskrit from the Rigveda matches what an Aryan language from the middle to late Bronze 1500-1200 BCE"
"The culture destribed in the Rigveda matches the Shintashta culture which dates to 2050-1900 BCE"
"Sanskrit does not evolve into existence until about 1500 BCE"
So it's describing things from 2050 BC using language that came about in 1500 BC? How is this the language not being updated?
The rest is about there being Vedic influences in the ANE. Alright. Cool. Haven't looked into that, but cool if true. What's your point here?
The Hebrew Bible also preserves ancient forms of words from the specific time period of the Exodus, like toponyms for example. Also many ancient Egyptian loanwords. And the descriptions also closely match Ancient Egyptian culture at that time. So there is a genuine ancient historical core to it. Now, as for your question, "Why would the Hebrew Bible need to be updated" - Dr Michael Heiser argues that the text was ultimately finalized during the Babylonian exile, with the purpose of specifically interacting with and arguing against the surrounding cultures and religions. So it makes sense. That's just one example answer off the top of my head. You could also challenge the notion that it was updated, but let's just grant that it was - no problem.

    • @zayobayo2175
      @zayobayo2175 ปีที่แล้ว

@Jordan Steele Okay, but once again - as Michael Heiser says, the Pentetauch was finished up during the Babylonian exile. So it's possible that there's features from a later time period. I'm not too knowledgeable on grammar, though, lol
But that still doesn't explain the big relative amount of Egyptian loanwords in the Pentetauch. Later books in the Bible have much less Egyptian vocabulary. So this imples that the Pentetauch has earlier historical roots. Once again, including very time-specific toponyms that WERE NOT used after 1000 BCE (to illustrate, you wouldn't call New York "New Amsterdam" today). How would the Pentetauch have these features if it was entirely made up after 1000 BCE?
Also if you want customs and traditions, as I said, the text seems very familiar with Egyptian culture, customs, and agricultural practices from the time of the Exodus. There's also the altar at Mount Ebal (the Joshua altar), which was used for kosher animal sacrifices (deduced from the bone remains found at it), and matches chronologically with a late-date Exodus. IP has a documentary about this, but if you want to hear it from an Egyptologist, check out Dr. David Falk, "Ancient Egypt and the Bible" on youtube. He's got a playlist on the Exodus.
Say, here's what - Dr Falk is going to have a Q&A livestream tomorrow, and I'm going to ask him about the date of the language in the Pentetauch, alright?
Edit: In the mean time, do watch IP's documentary "Exodus Rediscovered", he actually goes into the grammar and linguistic analysis heavily there and cites a lot of scholarship

However, after much digging and sifting thru archeological data, i think i found evidence this indeed happened. After I looked at all the data from tombs from 30AD to 33AD time period by analizing the ossuary catalogues I notice a pattern. All ossuaries that had no bones in them had the symbol of the fish with a person comming out of its mouth or a circle with a person in it. The circle with a person in it symbol baffled me since it didnt really indicate anything in particular. However when you analyze it carefully it seems to indicate a cave, or tomb entrance and one walking out of it. This then led me to search all the catalogues of ossuaries found with these symbols. After much digging thru thousands of records I notice that those ossuaries with said symbols didnt have bones nor corpses in them. Could this be proof that these first century people marked the ossuaries of ressurected individuals? What do you think?

The documentary hypothesis takes the teeth out of these meticulously crafted narratives. i generally agree with secular scholarship, but it doesn’t look good when there’s very little agreement on what exactly constitutes a supposed source divergence.
P.S.: i did a bit of cursory research and it is possible elements of the joseph story existed during the persian period (Thomas Romer), but that still doesn’t justify the documentary hypothesis. Joseph dreamed two dreams; In the first he was binding sheaves in the field with his brethren, "when, lo, his sheaf stood upright, while his brothers' sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to his sheaf.' In the second the sun, moon and stars, (zodiacal constellations), make obeisance to him (the twelfth) Gen. To exculpate themselves, they having dipped it in the blood of a kid (the goat of December) slain for that purpose, exhibited poor Joseph's bloody coat to their father; i.e. they showed the reddish hue of the frost-killed vegetation

There are always at least three common names or ways of referring to different nationalities today. There's reference to the capital city, there's reference to the official name for the country or people, and there's reference to the leader. US pundits use "Putin", "Russia" and "Moscow" interchangeably, lthough that does reveal considerable ignorance and prejudice on their part. Then there's the ruling ideology, the dominant religion and so on. Names of nationalities can be derived from the geographical term for the land area they have as their country, or it can be derived from their "race" or a name of a founding ancestor. People often seem to stumble over Azerbaijan, because they haven't heard that the nationality is Azeri rather than Azerbaijanian, because so many other nationalities are named by adding an "ian" onto the name of the country. Evidently a "baijan" is much like a "-stan", the country of the people specified in the prefix. So this kind of multiple naming is absolutely ubiquitous. Turkey is the land of the Turks, or Turkmenis, rather than being called Anatolia and the people Anatolians, although the people living there are both Turks and Anatolians, and still include large numbers of Kurds despite the best efforts of Turkish nationalists to do to them what was previously done to the Anatolian Armenians and Greeks.

Joseph prospered exceedingly, and, being withal extremely beautiful, he drew upon him the lustful eyes of his mistress, who boldly accosted him, saying, "lie with me." But Joseph's virtue, like Abimelech's, was not to be overcome.
Hence, Mrs. Potiphar, appearances being in her favor, accused Joseph before her husband. Joseph, of course, was condemned and sent to prison - " in Potiphar's own house " (Smith's Old Test. Hist., p. 109), which looks rather ominous, since Potiphar dying soon after, Joseph took this same woman to wife (Gould's Leg. of Patriarchs and Prophets., p. 237), and soon learned of a truth that " her house is the way to Hell, going down into the chambers of death (winter). For she hath cast down many wounded; yea, many strong men have been slain by her" (Prov. 7, 26, 27).

Joseph got a cushy job in prison, because Potiphar was in charge of the prison. just the facts ma'am
The Historical and Literary Complexity of the Joseph
    Story
The story of Joseph as a young man (Genesis 37-40) is full of contradictions and doublets, and is interrupted by the story of Tamar and Judah (Genesis 38). Beyond that, hovering in the background is the question: how can the spoiled youth, his father’s favorite, become the prudent leader and savior of his family?
    Prof. Athalya Brenner-Idan
Starting from the End: The Final form of the Joseph Account
whoever composed or edited Genesis seems to have appreciated stories about Joseph not only for their literary or entertainment value but also for what they told about national formation, namely the transition from a Jacob Family (in Genesis) to a group of “tribes,” Sons of Jacob, then the nation Israel (in Exodus and beyond).
The Joseph tribes ceased to exist as a political body after the Assyrian conquest of the Northern
Kingdom in 722 BCE. It is thus likely that these stories were first told and collected before then, while the Joseph group still existed in the Northern part of the country. Yet, as we shall see, parts of the story feature Judah as a protagonist, and view him positively.
This is not surprising since most of the Hebrew Bible has come to us via Judean, or Jerusalemite lenses. It is likely that an earlier story, with Reuben as the other important brother, was taken over by scribes and editors of the Southern Kingdom shortly after its Northern (Joseph) kingdom’s demise, when the need for remembering, or manufacturing historical memory for the present and future, was keenly felt.
Some Source-Critical Insights: Who Wants to Save Joseph? Who Sells
    Him?
Two brothers save Joseph’s life. Reuben stops his brothers from murdering him by suggesting they throw Joseph into a pit and avoid spilling blood (37:21-22). Later, Judah suggests selling Joseph (37:26-27). The brothers agree to both ideas, yet when Reuben returns to the pit he is shocked to find Joseph gone (37:29-30). Why didn’t Reuben know they were selling him?
To add to this problem, the sale of Joseph is particularly confusing. He is picked up by Midianite merchants (37:28) but sold to the Ishmaelites (37:27, 28). He is then sold to Egypt by the Medanites (37:36), but also by the Ishmaelites (39:1).
These contradictions are noted and explained by most of the medieval parshanim. Rashi (1040-1105), for example, suggests that Joseph was sold twice: the brothers sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites who then resold him to the Midianites.^Rashi’s grandson, Rashbam (1085-1158), suggests that the brothers never actually sold Joseph, but that while they were deliberating, a group of Midianites came, pulled Joseph out of the pit and sold him to the Ishmaelites^2]
More likely, the final form of Genesis has combined two versions of a similar story: a Judah and Ishmaelites version, and a Reuben and Midianites version.^ In the Judah story, the brothers are about to kill Joseph when Judah suggests selling him to the Ishmaelites, which they do. In the Reuben version, the brothers are about to kill Joseph when Reuben suggests throwing him in a pit. Later, Reuben sneaks back to the pit to save Joseph, but by then a group of Midianites have already found him and taken him away.
Reuben is Jacob’s firstborn (Genesis 29:32) who lost his primogeniture because he had sex with Bilhah, his father’s secondary wife (35:22, 49:3-4). This reflects the tribe of Reuben’s loss of prominence and eventual disappearance during the time when the Northern Kingdom was still in existence. Judah, Leah’s fourth son, comes into dominance later on and plays a decisive role in the family reunification in Egypt. The two versions here reflect the struggle between these two groups, with the redacted text reflecting Judah as winner. Nevertheless, the memory of the Reuben group’s dominance, long lost, persists.
    Literary Doublets: Joseph’s Punishment
Joseph is punished in twos. For example, he is first thrown into a pit, then into prison. He is stripped naked twice: once his brothers take his ketonet (meaning of Hebrew uncertain), then he leaves his clothing to Madam Potiphar.
    Literary Explanation 1: Multiplying Difficulties
These repetitions highlight the grave dangers that befall Joseph. The more difficulties the future hero faces, from his birth or even earlier,M the more impressive his eventual achievements; the more obstacles he clears, the more competent he will be to lead;^] the more he withstands sexual temptation by married women, such as Madam Potiphar (chap. 39), the more trustworthy and ethical, the less impeachable, he would seem. From Sargon to Oedipus and beyond, the hero’s trajectory to power and authority is not complete without overcoming complications that would have reduced a lesser man. But this answer still feels insufficient. It makes sense that the text would multiply ordeals, but why two ordeals of the same nature?
Literary Explanation 2: Joseph Needs Two Rounds of Ordeals
As Bereshit Rabba (84:7-22; 86-88) and other later midrashim point outJ6^ Joseph starts out as an arrogant, foolish youngster, and throughout his stay at Potiphar’s house, it is not at all clear that he is completely blameless and free of conceit. He is still in need of education; in the language of the sages, he needs to undergo another test. He needs to show that he is either naturally righteous, never feeling temptation, or that he can control his desire with the Egyptian woman, along the lines of “Who is a hero? He who controls his desire” (Avoth 4:l)J7]Thus, another round is necessary for the schooling process of this young man. He will be on trial until he learns humility, which he finally shows with the interpretation of the Egyptian courtiers’ dreams, which are also doubled.^
The Meaning of Dreams in the Ancient Near East
Joseph tells two dreams that are one: both are symbolic visions of his future rule over his family members. His dreams do not require interpretation,as evidenced by the brothers’ resentment. The courtiers’ dreams are also paired: although they require interpretation-a different one for each-they prove correct in due course.
Since Freud, Jung and their successors, it is customary to interpret dreams as expressions of inner states of consciousness, processing past and present experience, wishes, fears and desires. Dreams in the ancient world are conceptualized otherwise: they are understood as predictions of the future, coming from God or gods as a divine portent.
    The Doubling of the Dreams
But why are all the dreams (Joseph’s, the courtiers’, later Pharaoh’s) arranged in pairs, when the first pair always has wheat in itj10! and the second bolsters the meaning of the first?
The ‘wheat’ element functions as an early hint for Joseph’s later career, where he provides wheat for the Egyptians (Gen 41:47-57) and later for his brothers (Gen 42:19, 45:5-7). These repetitions do not derive from different sources, but are for emphasis, in order to foreground the single emphatic meaning of the double dream (Joseph’s, Pharaoh’s). That the middle pair - the courtiers’ dreams - is a variation, two dreams with contrasting meanings, strengthens the argument that the other repetitions serve a literary function.
Judah: A Story that is more than just about an Individual
Although Joseph is the main protagonist of the end of Genesis, the story in ch. 38 focuses on Judah, which seems intrusive here. Rashi writes (for 38:1) that the placement of the story here reflects the brothers’ displeasure at their father’s mourning, and consequendy less respect for Judah because he advised selling Joseph instead of bringing him back to his father^11]
Rashi’s fundamental insight that the chapter’s place here reflects conflicts between the brothers seems sound. The Joseph story is about Joseph, but not only about him. It is also about Judah, and to a lesser extent about Reuben. It is not only a story about individuals and their jealousy, but also about related kin groups that josde for power, prestige, political clout and land (food! wheat!). These conflicts are projected back on to their eponymous ancestors. We are, therefore, reminded at this point, and later in the next parashot, that Judah is still a contender for Jacob’s promise, although Joseph seems like his father’s preferred choice. But feelings about Judah-the ancestor of King David-are mixed: hence the ignoble tale about his illicit dealings with Tamar.
    Some Methodological Reflections
Modem biblical scholarship has a wide variety of methods-it does not believe that one solution solves all problems. The Joseph story is unusually complex, both in terms of its contents and its long compositional history. It is rife with contradictions and doublets. Yet, one method cannot solve all of these problems; in some cases, diachronic solutions, suggesting that the text has developed over time, resolve the problems; while in others, synchronic solutions, suggesting that doublets reflect emphasis, are more satisfactory. Different readers, however, may prefer different solutions, or different combinations of solutions, to these same problems.

10:45 - IP is saying Judges 8:22-24 proves Ishmaelite and Midianite were the same… it says exactly the opposite! In Judges 8, Gideon goes to fight the Midianites. On the way he asks the people of Sukkoth and Peniel for food and water, which they do not provide. Gideon returns to the people of Sukkoth and Peniel AFTER DESTROYING THE MIDIANITES and conquers Sukkoth and Peniel.
Immediately after conquering Sukkoth and Peniel, the Israelites ask Gideon to be their king because he saved them from the Midianites. He refuses, and says “give me the earrings you got as spoil…” Who did he just finish conquering? The rulers of Sukkoth and Peniel - who are DECIDEDLY NOT MIDIANITES. So, the most logical conclusion is that the people of SUKKOTH AND PENIEL were Ishmaelites, and therefore, NOT Midianites.

AMEN brothers and sisters in Christ our Lord and God bless ya brother Inspiring Philosophy's Apologetics ministry showing how consistent The Bible's historicity is. Jesus Christ of Nazareth changed the world by everything that He said and did in His public appearances in the ancient world being recorded in a series of books written by a handful of Jewish fishermen, scribes, physicians and outcasts who carried on His Will for generations up until two millennia later in our time. This has nothing and everything to do with the video but please listen if you want to otherwise leave it alone and ignore it. Hello my name is Justin and I'm a Christian and Apologist but I'm also a college student.
I've studied evolution and abiogenesis in the past and read Darwin's " Origin of The Species" and I'm not convinced of macro Evolutionary biology but I accept micro Evolutionary biology like speciation and adaptation because there's no evidence of macro Evolutionary biology nor clear observable examples of it where living creatures evolve into other kinds of species plus the fact that fossils don't show evidence of evolution and genetic entropy rules out evolution.
On the flight of Joseph.
Jupiter had a sister-wife (Sorer et conjux) Juno. The Grecian Zeus took Hera, his sister, to wife. (Keightley's Myth., p. 85.) The Scandinavian Thor and the Indian Indra were counterparts of the Zeus and Jupiter of the Greeks and Romans. The latter, Indra, being once covered all over with the symbols of his concupiscence, was named "the profligate lord of the gods." (Moor's Hindu Pantheon, p. 264.) As these lords all personify spring, the love season, these facts may be readily accounted for. Here, too, it was that Noah got drunk, as we have seen, and lost his virility; and again, it was the very spot where Joseph, as we shall hereafter find, being impotent, forfeited his cloak to the beautiful wife of his master and fled, rather than expose his weakness. (Gen.39:12.)
Noah is also Osiris of the Egyptian mythos.

Crazy how many different interpretations there are. I feel like the easiest explanation is to just read it as is. Brothers put him in a pit, thought about selling him into slavery but when they returned, the midianites had already pulled him from the pit and sold him to the ishmaelites. I don't think anything needs changed or anything has been changed. And I don't think we need to pretend ishmaelites and midianites are the same people either. It clearly says midianites sold him to the Ishmaelites

In ancient times the months were designated as trees, each bearing its appropriate fruit. Joseph was the son (fruit) of the tree (month) by the well (winter). This is the month November. The word Joseph signifies addition; or Joseph is something to which something is added. But Joseph's "branches run over the wall," i.e., over the previous eight months, during which the crops were grown, gathered, put in market by November, and afterward sold to the Midianites or middle-men.

To exculpate themselves, they having dipped it in the blood of a kid (the goat of December) slain for that purpose, exhibited poor Joseph's bloody coat to their father; i.e. they showed the reddish hue of the frost-killed vegetation

Bread and wine are symbols of spring and summer. Flesh and the hunter would be winter.
At one time, the year was divided into winter (Shem/Nahor) Nov - Feb, spring (Japheth/Abram) Mar - Jun, and summer (Ham/Haran) Jul - Oct.
You can see this in Isaiah 9.14-15, where the biblical Israel (summer) is composed of Leo (royalty/nobility), Virgo (palm branch), Libra (water plant), and Scorpio (liar).
You can see how Scorpio is used as tail of Israel and as the "head" of winter when the year is divided into seven months of summer and five months of winter. The writers did a lot of double counting of the signs. Genesis one divides the year into six nights (months) of darkness/winter (Libra thru Pisces) and six days (months) of light/summer (Aries thru Virgo). This is modified by taking Libra and adding it to the six "days." Libra is often associated with sheba (7). Libra became Saturn day of the Jews. You will find the balance/scales in this sign. Libra is the first southern constellation and is called "firstborn" of the Egyptians (winter).

The people in the Bible were not white lol I know this because Moses was raised by Egyptians and he looked like one of them, also Jesus Christ hid in Egypt and once again he looked like one of them that's how he blended in, otherwise herod and his men would of caught him.

    • @wannabe_scholar82
      @wannabe_scholar82 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Problems, one they weren't white so you're right about that, they were however middle eastern.
Second Moses (if he existed) and the Egyptians did probably share a similar skintone the only thing is the Egyptians depicted themselves as a bit of a tanned brown color and separated themselves from how the nubians looked.
Third Egypt was a multi ethnic culture therefore there was an array of skintones there and this included very light skinned (although still not white) people and then also very dark skinned people (such as nubians or some native Egyptians)
Fourth herod and his men didn't go look for Jesus in Egypt and fifth Jesus would've blended in with egypts multiethnic culture because all the people in Egypt were from around that area so he most likely had tanned brownish color skin.
I agree with your initial statement that the people in the bible aren't white but I hope that doesn't mean you're implying the other extreme that ppl in the bible were black.
For more on Egyptians skin color I'd recommend this video th-cam.com/video/jnGfzEj12mk/w-d-xo.html

Slavery (bible) is the winter (non-productive) season of hardship. Winter relies upon Summer to feed it (charity). One division of the year has seven months of "summer" and five months of "winter." See Rev. 9.5, where winter, the season that can harm man, is described as five months. The leader is the scorpion, who is despised throughout the bible.
