This demo took me back many years, to an eighth grade art class. We made lilac paintings, using a bit of sponge for the blossoms. I thought it was the most beautiful watercolor I had ever done. Believe it or not I remember the experience vividly but until today was rather embarrassed to repeat that sponging joy. Thank you very much for this demo and freeing me to paint beautiful lilacs again. I need to be reminded that I may use simple items and techniques openly in my art practice. ❤
This “no paintbrush” tutorial is a huge WOW. I would love to reproduce it. My vision is poor, and with this beautiful lilac painting, I can splash around and not need to stay in any lines. I will try this one hitting the pause button just about every other second! Thank you, Karen Rice.
Karen this is a stunning piece of art considering you didnt use a brush, so effective with all the other elements you did use…lovely, please do more of this🤗💜
This is a wonderful tutorial, Karen - thank you so much for all these techniques! Your painting style is really inspirational and I’m loving having a go at all the alternatives to brushes!
You have just made me so happy. I like new and unusual ways to paint without using the traditional brush technique. This tutorial has given me ideas to do so. Watercolor is such a tricky and hard medium to master and you have given me new ideas. Thanks so very much for this. - Sheryl from Texas - USA - I’m smiling …
I so admire you and your gifted talent ..Every painting you flow with grace ..Your teaching is remarkable i watch you over & over .. love every painting you make ..Thank you ❤
Wonderful wonderful wonderful, natural sponge, twigs, scouring pad and color! I’m in love with lilacs and now I will try your teaching about use of masking fluid and try to be as creative as you are! Thanks you for this video! Karen Dirmish who hopes to create the lilacs in my back yard!
Simply exquisite! Such a lovely soft and dreamy result with a quite clever combination of household items. I am so looking forward to having a go at this, it looks like so much fun! Thank you for inspiring our imaginations.
@@KarenRiceArt I've painted 3 of these, and it was a bit challenging keeping the moisuture level right whether it be the paper, how wet the sponge got, the shape of the sponge, and so on! I absolutely love the style though, and yours is amazing!
I love the brush-free approach and the means by which you've achieved your goal. The finished project is stunning. Also love the simple discarded tools that were so effectively used in your endeaver, which was wise and thrifty - saving on cost. Overall, I think the brush-free approach allows more freedom and controll. Thanks. ❤❤❤😊
Came across your chanel by accident (was looking for a photography channel as I am into landscape photography) and found it very interesting . I think there is some sort of similarity and things in common with photography and painting like light and composition for example. I use to try to watercolour painting a while ago, but not very good at it, but enjoyed the almost theraputic process. Was actually a nice change from photography, your finshed painting was brilliant and interesting to see different techniques to get the fiinished painting. Have now subscribed as it's a nice break away from my photography, may even get my paints back out sometime.
I’ve never seen how natural sponges are used in painting, that’s really lovely, I’m very inspired to give this a try (thanks for showing the reference photo!) Very clever using the side of a card to get a nice line for the vase edges! Would the Holbein water bottle give a nice spritz?
Thank you so much! So pleased you liked some of these techniques. I am not sure about the Holbein water bottle... sorry. Maybe another viewer has used one?
Do you finish your paintings when you’re done like a spray something to seal the paint and chalk? I am thinking this would stand the test of time just putting it behind glass and frame. Beautiful painting! I love your way of painting loose.
You seem to have skipped some of the painting at the 10.40 stage of the video when you let the painting dry. It then picks up again at 10.42 with green leaves having magically appeared. Did you paint the leaves after it had dried and, if so, did you then let them dry before continuing?
If a graphite pencil is used to sketch design will the watercolor paint cover the sketch lines? I watch your wonderful tutorials everyday. Just began watercolor painting.🎨🖌
It can be tricky to get rid of pencil marks, and I have a few tips: 1: Try to rub them off when your painting is dry. 2: Draw very lightly, make as few marks as you can. 3: Don't use a hard or soft pencil (HB is best I think). 4: Don't use pencil, paint without drawing! That is the hardest! I hope this was helpful 😊
Gosh I’ve enjoyed this so much, you are such a beautiful artist, could you please tell me the name of this paint set, love the colors and very much the mixing area that comes with it, thank you, Rita

Thank you! You can use fixative for pastels, but I prefer to frame them behind glass to protect them 🎨
This is so beautiful! Thank you for such an awesome lesson!

Really loved this tutorial. The outcome is stunning. Can you tell me if there is an additive you can use with the brusho to make it creamy?
Thank you so much Kim. I have not added anything to Brusho except water 😊
Beautiful.
Thanks Karen
I LOVE IT!!!!!!! Flowers 🌸
Gorgeous
Thank you :-)
This tutorial could go in any direction and I would love to see all the other people's go at this painting. Wouldn't that be wonderful?
Great suggestion!
What kind of paper ate u using. It looks awesome. My first time watching this form.. Reall cool.
I am using 300 g 100% cotton paper coldpressed surface on a block. Hope this is helpful.
Hi, when you say you’re making the paint creamier… are you just adding more pigment?
Yes
Awesome!!!
I still can't get a normal vase. It is driving me banana's the the bloody thing goes crooked on me each time. Whatsup with that?
Maybe draw one side, trace it and then use that to draw the other side.
Love to see you do hydrangeas…..Please.
