  • This unscheduled stop of the Canadian Pacific steam locomotive CP 2816 caught a few people by surprise in Harpers Ferry, Iowa. Hearing it take off from a dead stop was pretty cool!

    Beautiful in Harpers Ferry Jason. What a shot of the steam train coming through the trees, & over the crossing just awesome. Not too far from being back in Canada now after its epic trip. Bet you & JT had a great time chasing trains in Iowa. 😊👍

    There is another Harper's Ferry, its the original, and its on the east coast, it recently suffered a devastating bridge fire, that shut down both freight and passenger traffic until repairs can be made.

    After watching all your videos of this chase (and Jaw Tooth's, too), I just noticed the KCS cars mixed in with the CP. Same basic paint and style. Good seeing you guys in each other's videos.

    Common practice to include diesels in the consist for breakdowns on a RR main line and to provide dynamic braking to save the old locos brake shoes. Sometimes even electrical power for pax cars heating/cooling/lights.

      And also to push what that giant boat anchor can no longer pull anymore . you foamers would believe anything because m you saw smoke and heard a whistle . How do I know ? Lets just say I've pushed one of those damn things around enough to make me vomit . They are a PIA if you are assigned to pushing the damn thing .

    Question of the day. Does the heat from a steam locomotive set off the defect detectors? Inquiring minds want to know.

    SD70MAC is for PTC

    • @rc391995
      @rc391995 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The SD 70 is for pulling that mess . that steam engine is for only show there is enough steam generated to blow the whistle there is not enough power generated by that machine to pull that train anymore . And don't try to say its only for PTC they been putting a functioning locomotive in those steam excursions for years before PTC was ever thought about. You need to know what your talking about before you make statements your absolutely clueless about .

    I'm sorry, I have little interest in watching a great steam locomotive be shoved up a grade by a couple of diesels. I have chased steam all over the US and Canada for the past 35+ years and this does nothing for me. 2816 is being shoved along most of this trip and the Classic F-units were being dragged along for show. I know I sound like a steam snob, but this is sad. One of my fondest memories was being on the 3 day, 385 mile long Cariboo special from BCRails shops in West Vancouver to Kelly Lake and back.....all behund steam in some of the most beautiful remote areas of Western BC....no diesels, just 100% CP Steam...behind CP 3716.

      It was working - you can hear it, they don't bark like that without some work being done - but 2816 is, like most Hudson types, absolutely useless on a grade as they don't have enough weight on the drivers.

      ! 4500 hp engine (no ptc) and how many engines 2 1500 hp diesels and one regular (With ptc) and how many passenger cars!!!, it usually pulled 6 when it was on the west island commuter run out of Montreal QC in the late 50's as a old timer and member of the Canadian Railway Historical Association. There's a good explanation on latest UP 4014 (now has ptc )recent explanation on PTC POSITIVE TRAIN CONTROL and why a diesel with steam is a benefit, OOOK
