I started playing this game a couple of months ago and decided that the Gunlance was definitely my cup of tea. You definitely helped me suck less starting out; I appreciate that. Thank you for the time and dedication you put into these videos. Looking forward to many more to come. Happy Hunting!
Honestly first vid I’ve seen while looking for gunlance. And first monster hunter game I’ve played. Not cause lack of interest but due to never getting around to buying said game. I’m instantly hooked after a solid month of playing and the gunlance is definitely my favorite weapon by far. And to add to this, I knew there were other moves while playing but didn’t know how much more I’ve been missing. Thank you for this tutorial.
I’m surprised how much I’m loving the gunlance. My favorite combo has been with the Long GL. Charge shot -> poke -> shell That gives a decent burst of damage and it’s so easy. You can easily extend it into the wyrmstake too. Charge shot -> Poke -> shell x2 -> wyrmstake
This is good tutorial for new Gunlance users and even experienced Gunlance players like me. I'm always learning something since between Monster Hunter World and Rise. I need to give the Focus skill set for my load out a try one of these days. It's not easy trying to obtain all of the skills that I want for my Gunlance. I already got a favorite armor set for this. I wish there was more armor sets for the Gunlance like wearing a cowboy outfit like the Wroggi armor set. 🙂🐵👍
It's really crazy how strong GL is in MHNow. I didn't even have any sort of optimized set, nor did I have a full grasp on how to control it (aside from tap to fire, swipe to stab) but I was able to take out monsters well out of my power range with the basic bone GL you get for free. It's a shame actually upgrading weapons takes so many materials otherwise I'd probably switch over to GL permanently. But I've already got G8 weapons in 3/5 elements, with the fourth only a few scales away in my SnS collection so it'll just have to be a fun side thing to use when I wanna switch it up for now.
Yeah, i´m in the exact same position. SnS Main with 3 8 star weapons and 1 at peak 7 star. I want to try gunlance, but it took me several month to build my SnS sets. Literal Pain q.q
Same here with all the SnS's. I have upgraded the bone gunlance a lot and it can easily take on 8 star monsters though lol. Finding it very fun and worth investing.
@@liamkadenbach9774 That´s true. I´m using the bone gunlance right now and it´s somehow nearly as strong as my other weapons, which are like 2 tiers higher. And that´s without knowing how to play gunlance :D Maybe, i´ll just do one general set and have fun with it!
Gunlance is so good, I feel like the wall I was facing against 5 star enemies even with my grade 5 weapons got easier. I can beat a 5 star monster with my grade 4 bone gunlance. So this video helped me refine my moves and know what to do better with it.
Normal full burst takes too long. An alternative faster combo perfect dodge -> overhead counter (this needs to be fast) and fullburst when using normal gunlance. Perfect dodge -> overhead -> wide sweep -> stake is also important dps for normal/wide. The stake is very strong dps for all builds. Even though it is crit, latent power is also really strong for stake / slap combos. Normal can get at 48s remaining with fb loop, wide can get around 45s (in theory wide can get in 15s but hard to combo shell x2 + stake and dodge without team) Very good skill to have for kushala / elder dragons if your build can fit it.
Just to add, you can also do a quick reload while shells aren't empty by holding tap and swiping down after any melee or shell attack. This isn't mentioned in the Hunter's Guide.
Fun fact: Shells deal fixed damage. They do not deal element damage. Their damage scales with the weapon grade itself. Thrust attacks and Wyrmstake Shot deal element damage.
Haven't tested it yet but in theory, it depends on the type of gunlance. Wide gl still benefit from element when doing wyrmstake and pokes. But long gl don't benefit at all since they spam charge shells. Normal can still benefit when slapping the boomstick but most of the damage will come from shells. So i think artillery should be the priority
Do you have an armor guide for gunlances? I know you talked about a few skills to grab for each type in this video. Or must have pieces for certain builds. I know final builds come down to what monster you are hunting when at higher tiers.
This is such a fun iteration for GL without needing to manage sharpness or overheating. Also worth mention: artillery 3+ gives another shell. Once long or wide have that, full burst is back on the menu for them, even if not as powerful as full shell normal.
Even I can say that Long with Artillery+3 turns into the omnishelling from Iceborne Community Edition, you can actually use every style that every shelling offers.

I mostly use the bone gl which is long amo while I'm trying to figure out how to use it. Why is my wyrmstake not releasing on shot 3? Do I have to do something specific to thrust forward?
@@PauwerPlaysI think what I've been doing wrong is not standing close enough to the beast. Now when I do it releases. Oddly though I have to stand closer with the long bullets compared to the normal GL bullets
At least now I know what I need to do. Now I just need to figure out how to input the controls so they actually register instead of just firing single shells or thrusting. :/
@PauwerPlays I managed to get 2 for my crit bill but because I managed to get burst on my helm with crit boost 2, don't think I'll bother as I'm working on basarios chest and legs armor
idk gl seems fun but those long animations feel even more punishable than cb, especially after you fire the spike you just stand there for a week and even tho you have shield in front you still eat the dmg...
The wyrmstake has a super long animation and the same for the overhead smash but the rising slash and full burst, you can dodge out of it pretty safely. If you don't like the normal playstyle, you can try out wide or long! Personally i like wide. It's like lance but now you have additional shelling damage :)
It's good that they have not treated the gunlance, like what they did with the bow and lbg. wish bows have coatings and lbg with attachments. The only thing that putting me off is the controls.. they should switch thrust and shelling.
Same! I don't like how swipe up is thrust and tap and hold then swipe up is rising slash. I get it wrong all the time. I guess it'll take some getting used to the timing
I am finding it hard to close gaps when I’m like just a little bit out of range and I try to swipe forward and my dude just stands there whiffing at nothing
does burst and lock on do any good on gunlance? I have rathian vambrace 3 in my build, but seems like the damage from shell stays the same even when burst (level 2) is activated
Burst does not buff shelling damage. Burst only buffs the slashing, thrusting and the wyrmstake of the gunlance. Burst can be good when you use these attacks with the gunlance
Does partbreaker still work on shelling in MHN? I'm considering Artillery 5, Focus 2, Part Breaker 5, Divine Blessing 3 as my current end game goal for long shelling to quickly disable monsters with breaks so I can keep firing, and divine blessing because the lumu coil has two driftsmelt slots and health seems to be the main thing stopping you from hunting indefinitely.
Partbreaker definitely works on shelling. I have bone gl at 10.1, with part beaker 2 (black diablos head) a single charge breaks 6* nightshade polomu wing; without it takes more than one
Havent tested it but in theory shelling damage should be the same. Damage will depend on weapon grade. G7 to g8 will increase damage but g7/4 to g7/5 will have the same danage
depends on the type of gunlance. I'd say the wide type gunlance would be the one benefiting greatly from element because it pokes and the wyrmstake deals elemental damage
@@PauwerPlaysplease stop implying to people that wide is the only good shelling type for wyrmstake and element. they all benefit from its massive damage.
@@petercottantail7850 sorry im not saying that it's the only good one for element. All im saying is its the best one that can utilize element. Other types can still benefit but not as often
@@PauwerPlays Thank you. I happened to craft a long gun lance first without really realizing there were different types. Very interesting weapon, still a lot to learn with GL and CB
@@PauwerPlays ahhh thank you for the advice, gonna try it out later and thank you for always making quality videos that are informative and easy to understand, appreciate it 🫡
this is in noway trying to be disrespectful but i would recommend not listening to the TH-camr. that advice is only applicable to the main mh games, not mhnow. Element damage is added to the damage total just as much as raw does in mhnow (as long as monster is vulnerable to that element) So you will do way more with element up and appropriate element gunlance when using the slap parts of the gunlance. wyrmstake is the main move you want to land, and its ticks use all the same damage sources as regular attacks, including element and status. even normal gunlance should prioritize wyrmstake over fullburst if the opening presents itself. you don't need element, but you will see better results with element and makes risking wyrmstake that more rewarding
@@petercottantail7850 ahh I see, high risk high reward kind of play style is indeed satisfying, I’ll take into consideration and since the shells dmg are only increase by the grades of the weapon, the increase elemental dmg on the wyrmstake can help boost the dmg output as well making it more versatile. Correct me if I’m wrong but thats what I got from your advice haha Thanks alot for the insight, Cheers 🙂🍻
With more time spent on gunlance, normal can benefit from element as well. You dont get the opportunity to go for full burst all of the time, so the thrust and slashing attacks you would usually do get buffed by element attack. My priority would be add artillery first then elemental attack 2nd. Hope this helps!
So the story here is, don't use the basics. Choose a Lance style and stick with it. That is either shell or full attack. For beginners and then get particular when you get good at the particular gun Lance style that you prefer. A.k.a. there are 3 styles of play in 2 levels with each style.
I can't believe they actually made each shelling type have a purpose that wasn't super gimmicky. I mean, in rise (base game), wide shelling existed solely as a gimmicky stun weapon (rise wide wyrmstake hits only twice, but stuns) that I liked but knew was bad, or to balance high raw GLs with bad shelling. Long has been dethroned as the jack-of-all trades shelling (for now) and is actually specialised.
So far every new weapon in mhnow has been fantastic! Really keeps the spirit of the weapon from mainline games. Cant wait to see what they add next haha!
@@PauwerPlays Please by all means keep it charged when recoding in 60 FPS. I am really happy that your audience is steadily growing, please keep it up so all of them will stay!

Does elemental damage work well with gun lances??
depends on the type of gunlance.
Very interesting weapon, still a lot to learn with GL and CB
its so annoying sometimes when you have to chase monsters when they get too far. you end up doing a swipe up attack lol
IKR you have to take a second b4 swiping up
Thanks
begs the question if I still build GL with higher elemental dmg or just go for the higher raw dmg like pink rathian GL?
depends on the type of gunlance. Wide gl can still benefit from element but for normal you should go for raw
Element damage is added to the damage total just as much as raw does in mhnow (as long as monster is vulnerable to that element)
So you will do way more with element up and appropriate element gunlance when using the slap parts of the gunlance.
wyrmstake is the main move you want to land, and its ticks use all the same damage sources as regular attacks, including element and status.
even normal gunlance should prioritize wyrmstake over fullburst if the opening presents itself.
you don't need element, but you will see better results with element and makes risking wyrmstake that more rewarding
Correct me if I’m wrong but thats what I got from your advice haha
Thanks alot for the insight, Cheers 🙂🍻
With more time spent on gunlance, normal can benefit from element as well. You dont get the opportunity to go for full burst all of the time, so the thrust and slashing attacks you would usually do get buffed by element attack.
My priority would be add artillery first then elemental attack 2nd. Hope this helps!
6:42 the best weapon type to use while drivin- I mean being a passenger
Shhhh they know 😂
🤔 Guys any idea if the skill part breaker will work on shelling (megaman move)? Thx in advance?
Partbreaker should apply to everything in the gunlance kit.
Thx @@Nautilus_pilot
Charge blade is no longer my best friend, gun lance best friends forever now
Same! Gunlance feels better 😂
great video
Thanks man!
Wide shell is the worst while it have nothing offense skill combine...
I like wide. The wyrmstake is so good haha!
Another basic control GL:
Long swipe down: Full reload
Long swipe up: Rising slash
🌚Long swipe up + swipe up + tap + long swipe up + tap🌚
Anyone else think the wide weapon being used looks like a spark plug from an engine?
Now that you mention it haha!
So the story here is, don't use the basics. Choose a Lance style and stick with it. That is either shell or full attack. For beginners and then get particular when you get good at the particular gun Lance style that you prefer. A.k.a. there are 3 styles of play in 2 levels with each style.
Is it just me or it is broken? I just pew pew dodge pew reload until it dies
That's basically long or wide gl playstyle haha
Gunlance ie very fun :)
Been having so much fun with the weapon more fun than the charge blade tbh. Can't wait to explore more builds!
@@PauwerPlays yeah same
im confused this video is literally in the game on how to use the weapon so how is this video helpful?
Did you get to the part where I talk about the different gunlance types haha
Lol I didn't know u could reload the wyrmsting
you make way better videos much more easy for me me to understand
Thanks man! That means a lot i try to be as clear and concise as possible :)

No blast dash, no use.
The FPS is hard to watch, respect your career and invest in a better phone.
Oh sorry about that. Im using samsung s23 plus. I'll try to turn on 60fps mode but im just worried my battery will drain too fast haha
@@PauwerPlays Please by all means keep it charged when recoding in 60 FPS. I am really happy that your audience is steadily growing, please keep it up so all of them will stay!
Weird no whetstone logic on this game
Its good that its not a monetized feature 😂
I honestly don't get why people are playing mh now when you can emulate a psp/3ds on android pretty decently and play an actual mh game in your phone if you want to
It has a fun community aspect to it haha. Managed to meet some amazing hunters thru the game haha
To get me out of the house and be active 😅
So i can still gaming when outside.
Like you still gaming in sleep when playing pokemon sleep
@@Erealze alot of mh games are in handheld devices
@@BrandonAndTashio after downloading it, I could attest to that. It's fun to bike around the city and open mh now from time to time.
Nice guide. I've already going with great girros GL with Lv5 par-attack and Lv4 Status Sneak-up.
Those monsters just standing there menacingly.
Ooohhh that must feel good to spam those full bursts!
@@PauwerPlays Especially when going HAT, the team just went crazy with the damage output. Slaying 8star Kushala with ease.
Good idea
