  • Six-Five Special was a British tv music show created by Jack Good, starting at 6.05pm on Saturday nights. It ran from 1957 to 1958 when a falling out between the BBC and Jack prompted him to move to rival broadcaster and start 'Oh Boy!' a similar format concentrating just on music with no news or sport which the BBC had insisted upon and had caused the split.
A spin off film was released in 1958 which featured this song and the flip side performed by The King Brothers, who had started out on the tv show. Other music stars featured in the film were Lonnie Donegan, Dickie Valentine, Jim Dale, Petula Clark, Russ Hamilton and Joan Regan.

Bet that was a fun show..I LOVE many of the British TV shows, one of my favorites was "Keeping Up Appearances" and the one where they worked in a department store..(Kant remember name..)
Wish they would show more, over on this side! OH..and "All Creatures Great and Small" ...that was perhaps my favorite, all-time.. Keep Playing the Music, Al ! ! !

Those back in the 50s that thought rock and roll was bad and harm had not heard this.

I remember the Six-Five Special, I would never miss it. Can't remember the follow-up program.

Oh Boy! was up against it in the same time slot but on ITV, it was impossible to watch both in those days without having 2 tv's ha ha

Oh Boy! was purely music whereas Six-Five Special had sports and news mixed in, a cross between Newsround and Top Of The Pops, the beeb wouldn't change the format that's why Jack Good left and started the rival show.

Maybe someone in Britain saw "American Bandstand" and thought that it was good fodder for a UK counterpart (somewhere in-between Bob Horn, the originator, and Dick Clark, the extender) - Don't know if British artists had to "lip-sync" to their recordings like Bandstand did later on.

    • @OldiesAl

There was no lip sync on the UK shows as far as I know, sadly not many clips exist.

Not a bad one from the Bros - made ten times better by the great boogie piano bit in the middle played by A.Nonymous. (Aaarrgh.!). Did I mention in the past me and the KBs were neighbours...

The A. N. Other pianist you refer to is Denis King Joe, there is a clip of them singing this from the film. I think you did mention you lived close by on my upload of the other side. This is much more like what you would expect from a group of lads in their early 20's than the hits for your granny that they churned out.

@@OldiesAl ...ah yes Denis King - that makes sense, thanks Al.
