Ohmygosh! I just discovered your channel this morning and am binge watching, and learning! It's been a while since I hung drywall and taped/floated-you know. Anyway, it's got me not dreading doing my bathroom-it needs it because the flippers I bought this house from did a terrible job. Just a tip for your channel ditch the music except maybe in your intro/outro and leave in the sounds of you working. YES! There are millions of us who love the sounds of people working, using tools, opening packages and boxes - even when you speed up the video-we love it. Love the way you edit! Just hate the canned music and want to hear the sounds. All this is constructive criticism because I feel like your channel should have a million subscribers-you are knowledgeable in what you're doing - not a halfazzer- as my late grandfather would say. That California patched closet shot was excellent and knowledge a LOT of people need-especially renters who could get the deposit back if they knew how to do something like that. Love your channel, I hit the Like button and subscribed. Loving this series for your daughter--Happy Father's Day to a great Dad and all of the other great Dad's out there. Much respect from a Louisiana mom/fan!
Welcome, and thank you for the kind words, and constructive criticism. I’ve been thinking the same thing about the music. It’s been a learning process, but I’m really enjoying making and sharing videos. Thanks for watching and commenting! 👍
I don’t know how I happened on to your channel, but glad I did. You are so funny ( knock off the goobers ). 😂 Are you leaving the brick, it will give it so much character. Wish the videos were longer, can’t wait for the next one.
Mick, I love your high tech method of texturing the ceiling. If it works, don’t knock it! When my Dad was alive, he figured it out as he went, and without fail, appliance repairs resulted with a lot of extra parts left over.😂❤
My dad has been in construction most of my life. 30 years plus. He was also a superintendent for a drywall company. He says that if you hire the right guys it barely saves you any money to do drywall or taping and texture yourself. Not only that he says they can knock it out so fast that that if time is at all important to you it saves you a ton of time. Especially if they just go in and hot mud it. I have seen people spend weeks doing drywall and renting equipment to help, then seen a 2 or 3 person team knockout a bigger project in a single day and only needing to return a second day to sand. This is even more the case if you are going to so say something like a Sun Valley texture on an existing wall. Pros will do it so much better and faster. A lot of paint jobs look bad because people or companies in some instances didn't tape and texture or sand correctly. Seen this a lot when a painter is like that isn't my fault. It was a crap diy drywall job.
I agree with you on most of this, and I sub out most of my bigger drywall jobs. I can make it look nice and it will paint up beautifully, I’m not the fastest at it, but in this instance I’m trying to save money wherever possible. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I’m hoping when this project is complete we will be able to see the continuation of the craftsman house remodel. While I’m enjoying this new project I keep thinking about the previous one.
Here in the Uk we mostly stay away from textured walls/ceiling. Then again, we do have a totally different process for what you guys call “ drywalling “ Like to see the different techniques. 😊
Yeah, I like to watch other building/remodeling videos from different parts of the world and see how it’s done differently. Thanks for watching and sharing! 👍
Loving the progress. Looks brand new! For my projects I always bring in a pro for drywall floating, skim coat or texture. The speed and quality just can’t be matched and they can make my mistakes disappear in half the time I could.
The only way I would accept rent from my daughter would be to save it for when she needs it. Hopefully to buy her own home. Still an excellent dad though.
HALLELOOYUR!!! The women (wife, kid, cat) are in charge and the word is SHIPLAP! YAYYYYY! 👏🏻😸😁 Hey that's not a half bad idea for the ceiling pattern, much larger than the round brush head my dad used to use. This gives me an idea which creates a question. You know those paint rollers with the patterns carved into them? I wonder if one of those would work. (Or a modified one.)😯🤔✌️🇱🇷
Ship lap it is! Between the wife, kids, and Joanna Gaines I don’t have much say. 😂 I actually bought and used one of those brush texture tools years ago to match some existing ceiling texture on a remodel. I’ve never used the roller with the pattern, might have to try something like that on a future project. 👍🇺🇸🔨✌️
No, no shiplap. It's already on its way out trend-wise and it'll be dated soon. Even if it's not, shiplap only really works for farmhouse or cottage aesthetic. Obviously, it's your house and do whatever you want, but I think having paint or wallpaper would suit the house so much better. Love all the windows. It's really coming along.
Are textured ceilings commonly still done in new construction where you live? We’ve had flat ceilings since the 90s here in new construction in North Carolina. It is so interesting to see what is common and other parts of the country.
Yeah, the textured ceilings are and have been popular for a long time. The walls have changed over the years from smooth to a light orange peel, to a hand texture called holy smooth. It is interesting to see how it’s done differently all over. I have a friend that moved to Wilmington a couple of years ago, he’s in the process of building a new house, I am wanting to make a trip there to see it. Thanks for watching and commenting! 👍
@@Madebymick I am familiar with wall texture only because I visited California some years ago. In NC, we still do smooth walls in new construction, even in the high end homes. Maybe it is a cost saving measure? I’d love to see the different types of wall texture. I’m going to look them up.
@@nataliefrobertson I do think it’s a time/cost saver, it takes quite a bit more time to smooth coat. If it’s not done right it shows every little flaw.
nice dad! thinking back about my father and always wished he had helped me get situated somehow in a little place of my own when i was young instead of paying rent all my life. current rent $1850/mo for an old apartment, small one bedroom with no amenities. the prices are scary. looking at what most are going for now in my area about $2100!
I noticed that you said in your intro, that the apartment is for your family. Has your daughter changed her mind about using the apartment for herself?
@@Madebymick Oh good!! I subscribed because I have a 22 year old old daughter who is trying to buy her first home, but is finding it to be very difficult to find something affordable. So I identify with your reasons for making this cute little apartment for her! Awesome work you’re doing and I commend you for your abilities that make it so you can help your daughter!
My niece bought her house at 23, after looking for a while. It’s worth double what she paid for it. It’s beautiful now. She never wasted her money on rent just improved it & built equity, tax savings etc. Lot’s of work, but can set you up for life. Keep encouraging offering any help you can.😊
So do you sand between each layer of mud or do you wait and sand after all 3 layers? It’s looking good & you’re making good progress. Although I have to say, I think these videos have a delayed release as there still snow on the ground out those windows and it’s the end of May now, lol.
Be sure to charge your daughter some sort of rent. Anything given free is never fully appreciated. When someone works for what they have, it builds ethics and gratefulness.
Came here for the reno, stayed for the Dad jokes.
That’s awesome, thanks! 😂😂

Sometimes 😁
Who knew that watching someone prepare walls and ceilings could be so absorbing? 😂 I'll be back for the next instalment.
Thank you 🙏
Fireplace, TV, and popcorn. Not a bad way to spend an evening. God bless.

Totally agree with you... TLC now and no nagging distractions later. Tend to be the same way with my quilts. Build is coming along beautifully! 🌻🐛🌿👍

I appreciate that!
The ceiling texture you showed us looks beautiful! How you apply it is really quite amazing. I think the finished ceiling is going to look rich!

Beautiful job! - watching from Lake Wales, Florida
Thanks, and welcome 👋
I saw the thumbnail and thought what a lot of work it's gonna be to get rid of that texture on the ceiling😅. To each their own.
It's a regional thing. Also, a lot of people like it. It does subtly help with reducing reverb in the room as well.
Just a little on the ceiling 😉
I picked up some tips on the butt end joints. Thanks. Sanding does suck.
That’s great to hear!
Congrats on finishing what most would consider to be the most tedious part of a remodel! Can't wait for the next update vid.

The mudding is really artwork, and I never realized it before. Those walls will be beautiful when painted!
There’s definitely a learning curve to it, and I agree the walls should paint up nicely. 👍

My #1 rule of drywall, hire someone else to do it.
That’s also a good rule 😁
Wives and that Magnolia TV....I tell ya. :)😝
😁
Where is this being filmed that there is snow on the ground?
It’s central Utah, and although it snowed into May this year, it was filmed in March and April.
Such a great space for her. Will her bedroom stay connected to the rest of the house?
In the last video it shows that the door in her room to the house has already been covered over.
Thanks, and yes it will.
Hi Mick.. what’s happening with the log cabin build?
I’m still working on it when I can, I’m hoping to have a progress video in the next couple of weeks. 👍
Where at
Re you that you have snow?
Central Utah, and I actually filmed the video in the early spring, it’s getting hot now.
😊

Why don’t you plaster (mud) all of the wall ?

Don't texture, it's ugly and hard to clean.
