Btw, can FeCl3 and AlCl3 be used interchangeably?

Yes but AlCl3 is a stronger lewis acid than FeCl3. Normally Friedel-Crafts reaction does not work very well with FeCl3 and has lower yield. Friedel-Crafts needs stronger lewis acid. The chlorination reaction works very well with AlCl3 but FeCl3 provides the same result with under milder condition.
