Great and important video Leo! I'm an advocate and I tell people (mostly older people like my 70 yr old parents) about the concept of social engineering. I try to make it as clear as I can that the most successful con artists aren't going to try to hack into your bank account, they're going to manipulate you into giving it to them willfully. And when it's a willfull transfer of money, even if it was a scam, it's much much harder to get your life's savings back vs when they just take it from under your nose. The most frustrating thing for me to see is when people are being conned, many times they refuse to believe it. They've invested so much into it that the possibility that it's fraud is too much to handle, so they reject it.

True. But the scary thing is, how can they leave our elderly so vulnerable. The banks and other companies, that is. They know their customers are vulnerable so why give out sim swaps, etc. For example.

I have been getting *so* many of these texts lately, it's super annoying. Lots of random 'wrong number' texts like "Hey Jean! Sorry I had to cancel skiing last weekend!" 🙄

Same here. I do not respond, I just block them. That way they don’t know that they reached a valid phone number.

Just ask'em money yourself. If they break the relationship, they were no friend.

It's kind of hard to feel guilty about not lending money to someone that clearly is avoiding meeting you in person.

Valuable advice .. the only problem is that ordinary folks still learn from their own mistakes and not from others :)))

A friend, even one you know in real life, that holds it against you if you don't/can't lend or give them money; then they aren't a friend in the first place.

Wow, I got one of those texts a few weeks ago, out of the blue asking if I was the coach for the texter's son. I responded with a simple "No" and the texter replied seeming to want to start some sort of relationship via text. From that point, I just ignored it never got any more texts but it sounds like it was a scam in the making. Now I know.

You could have said, "Yes, I'm his coach, and you're two months overdue on his sports fee. You need to send me $200 today."

I've never heard this term before. This happened to me when I switched over to We after leaving Fascist..um, Facebook. I had a young lady try and draw me in. I'm an old codger, and never took an interest in her. It work, she eventually stopped trying to contact me.

Heck, I've broken relationships with known members of my extended family for not paying back debts, don't expect me to trust anyone I don't already know to begin with. 😁
I remember a saying my father told me: Don't think that you were scammed for 20 bucks. Think that 20 bucks it was that cost you to get rid of an asshole. (of course, this in case of people you already know)

I got several of these during my semester abroad while I was using WhatsApp. Never once answered them. I didn't know what exactly they would do but knew instantly they were bad news.

So they're taking advantage of an incredibly incompetent and lonely individual

Rather than calling them incompetent, I prefer less well informed. (Ignorant is also accurate, in it's definition, but is too often now taken as a slur.)

I want to warn everyone of another version of this. It can happen in person too.
I met this girl who at first seemed pretty much normal, but soon she started asking me for some money and to buy stuff for her ect...
Pretty soon she started staying at my house and started mooching more and more.
I was shocked when I discovered she owned a scam business and even started hosting employees to come and stay in the house. This woman has such low morals shes willing to work with people under the ages of 10!
After a few years of training they are now hosting scams of their own by guilting me into giving them small sums of money but it also seems to be gradually increasing amounts.
You were absolutely right about the guilt tripping.
Every time I refuse to give them money they "need" they will say things like "you're the worst dad ever" or they will make this weird face.
I had no idea I was the victim of a long con scam.
Didn't even realise it was called pig butchering until i saw your video.
Thank you for opening my eyes. I hope no one falls to these scams in the future.
    Stay safe brothers.

Yes but where were your barriers? You said that she started living at your house as if you had no choice in the matter. She has no shame and you just let her get away with it. Of course she will keep asking for more. If you feed a stray cat of course it will keep coming around.

I’ve had so many Facebook men try this on me . I immediately tell me “don’t butcher me, I am not the one”. I’m poor anyway. I will take their money before they ever take from me. Or I waste their time so they don’t scam anyone else . It started years ago . I kept one guy going for a year…lol
And I never sent him any money . But I keep them going promising money….lol I just hope I spared a woman her life.
