Right after I posted this video I saw this on one of my local groups:
"Warning - last week there was a post about duct cleaning. I pm’d the author then when the author finally told me the name of the company I checked it on BBB. Yikes! I nicely told her via pm that i would move need the services. Now she wont leave me alone - i had to block her every way i could and reported her to FB - Long story short - be very careful contacting any “company “ that doesn’t put company name and info in post. I knew better and still got myself in trouble"

it's been about as bad as myspace was in the 2000s for almost a decade now. But, most recently. It stopped functioning too. Remember when myspaces website wouldnt actually load for like 30 seconds. yeh, and theres buttons that dont press. I duno if its my gpu but youtube has been flickery too. ive been on a computer since the 90s so i can see the programming errors. but, i should probably do my part and upgrade soon.

I get the duct cleaning phone calls all the time. I let them complete the long involved speech and interject occasionally with some basic, generic questions. When they're done, I just reply that I don't have any ducks but I have 2 chickens and 3 geese and can they clean them for the same price. Usually I just get some south Asian accented swearing before the final click in my ear. Oh well...

I Run a Facebook swap, And I go round all the cesspool swaps and get keywords from all the scam postings and add them to my admin assist. If an when a post is created matching those keywords their the post gets deleted and they get banned from the group. One example of a keyword would be "tend to your kids (or pets),". Something matching those keywords would be from a work from home scam.

I was on it back when it was just starting to get widely popular, but way before they took over the social media world and had literally billions of users. Fake names were the norm back then, just like on most web sites that had accounts for chatting or forums or whatever, you didn't use your real name, you just made something up, like here on TH-cam even now.
I deleted my account and left when they first started requiring personal information to have an account. They only required a phone number or email or maybe both, I don't remember. But even that was a big "no thanks" for me, I didn't really use it that much anyway.

I'm a new sub. Thx much for this informative video.
I, too, have been coming across such crap posted on FB and FBM
Also, in the section where most elderly folks would go looking for handrails, safety grab bars etc there are a slew of ads for getting cars safeties or help filling out GOV forms etc... Of course all for a fee.
Let me tell ya'all...GOV have folks hired for just this very situation. NEVER get help filling out a GOV form...these scammers are looking to steel your identity!!! And probably worse.
Hey, Good folks out in our real-world, reach out to look after ur family and friends who may need some help.
But I also have to say...dam...sadly there are family and friends who will also do you harm.

What's really needed is proper legislation to force companies to actively combat scams. Whether or not people want to admit it, companies only do what they are legally obligated to do (& sometimes not even that), there is no moral or ethical consideration when profit is concerned.
I hate the fact that, despite not using social media, I could have fake accounts set up pretending to be me and I'd likely have little recourse because the scumbag company who is facilitating it can't be legally held to account. Handing the internet over to the likes of Zuckerberg was one of the worst most idiotic missteps we ever made. Left me on a Monday, jumped in bed with a guy from Plenty of Fish on Tuesday, married him in 6 months. . . Finds out he has AIDS, Herpes, addicted to OxyContin, 3rd mortgage on home and then she went back to eating .. she's gained OVER 150lbs....and, the reason I'm typing all this .... Every week she RE-HASHES her pics on Facebook when she was with me ... THIN and Healthy, both of which is is not now. . . and it kills me to see her get over 100 likes, and love hearts from people that haven't even seen her in 2 years, she got a stay at home job on the computer, lost her license with TWO DUI's, has her groceries delivered to her house, her neighbour brings her her supply of booze, 40oz bottles of vodka.
Why do I know she's so fat and falling apart? ...When her husband left the house, he did not remove or delete the passwords for the HOME SECURITY SYSTEM. Everyday, when her ex-husband gets bored, he flips his phone on and watches ALL of the cameras in the house...he told me that she thinks the cameras are set up to detect movement AT NIGHT in the house...I personally think that is just creepy but at least we know she is as big as a house but living in a fake reality on Facebook.

This is why I made my account "Friends Only", and vetted anyone that wanted to be my friend. Even still I require a actual real life meetings before adding (or know something about me the scammers would never know). I also stopped using my face in my ID pick. Facebook also allows Scammers to post sponsored ads that rip people off due to them needing money. I only do business, or visit other business accounts that have actual locations, and never do business on marketplace (or other groups) that require shipping, and/or don't accept cash.
To make matters worse I get threatened by Facebook for reporting all the scammers as being harassing (they too gave me the same response like in 3:19). Their staff is more focused on finding & removing people that don't think/believe like them rather than going after scammers. Oh sharing a video like this warning people on Facebook could get you put in Facebook Jail, or banned if their staff catch wind of it (like if it goes viral). I posted a about the Sponsored Scams on Facebook they removed it and threat me with a ban for misinformation. Most likely cause it hurts their bottom line.

This doesn’t just happen on FB it happens in real life too. In 2016 our house caught fire. Fortunately the fire department was able to save our home, but we had significant damages. I was standing across the street watching our house burn and the fire dept was putting out the fire, I was approached by a young woman wearing wearing jeans and a tshirt saying she owns a business that restores fire damaged homes. I asked her for a business card and she said she would be right back with one and left. She returned about 5 minutes later with a disheveled looking man who said he can vouch for her, and a name and phone number written on a piece of paper torn from a notebook. Not a business card. At that point I said no thank you. The next day we had at least four different people coming to our door representing “damage restoration companies”! Our insurance agent said these people have scanners so they can find out when fires happen and show up right away to scam people. Trying to take advantage of someone in a vulnerable moment is the lowest of the low!

I deactivated my fb account in 2020. I now only go onto fb twice per year to catch-up with some old friends. Although, like Lon says, they often fail to take-down scammer accounts, they have no problem quickly censoring alternative points of view that don't conform to their political or medical narratives. Among teens and people in their 20s, fb hasn't been cool or cutting edge for many years. They see it as a social network for their parent's generation. The future of fb isn't bright. If it disappeared, I wouldn't be shedding any tears!

I'm 34 and I deleted my account when I was 22 (Back in 2012). Even way back then I saw the direction the platform was heading in, and all the warning signs, IT DIDN'T LOOK GOOD! Oh and what a shock! I was right!
I've been praying for it's downfall, especially when psychologists linked to the tobacco/gambling industry came out and said they worked with Facebook to make the platform as addicting as possible! That's evil. The damage done to society should be studied and written in the history books. Horrible platform and shame on all those who created it.

We have a national 2-factor digital ID here in Denmark. The verification service is also centrally hosted and if Facebook was to employ this service, they would not be able to get any of the verification data I submit. It would cost Meta a tiny one time fee per verification, so there would be no need to charge a monthly fee considering how much it would improve reliability of their products.

Scammers figured out how to take over FB groups. They promised the admins money if they would let them put ads on their Fb group page. They then used that to convince them to add them to the group's admin account. Once in, they they kicked off the old admin, and set up shop - mostly selling T-shirt. I find it hilarious. Most FB admins are way too full of themselves, and love the little bit of athority they have - so seeing them get tricked makes me laugh endlessly.

I gave up on Facebook over 6 months ago.
Even got fed up with the people i know being fake or a false personality.
Lies and just after friend counts, with no responses to messages, till you unfriend them.
Then they ask what my problem is, etc.
Given up on school friends and a bunch of groups, then gained a life.
Found myself always having to make the first move.
Started unfriending people that always claimed that I've done nothing wrong, and kept telling me they've been busy.
If people keep claiming they're busy, yhen I'll unfriendl them , and stop wasting my time, interrupting their "busy life".
When all people have are exvuses, they're no longer friends.
One word or expression, i became so sick to death of seeing was "you're amazing", mainly from women who said that to others, then would back stab them in the same hour.
Rarely ever see men behave in this behaviour, yet it's incredibly common for women
Social media is a cancer on society.
So are many people claiming to want to be friends.

I still do read Facebook for the occasional legit thing still on it, like groups that have good admin policing, or people I've known for quite a while. It still annoys me though when a discussion is suddenly spammed with things like promotions for cryptocurrency brokerage and advice, or magic spell casting services. I wonder if some of these spams are put up, not because of any hope of drumming up business, but to stifle the activity on a discussion about certain things.

That is the exact reason why I'm very reluctant to search up new friends on FB. And FB is becoming so risky when so many of your friends has 1000+ friends there. Who in their right mind has 1000 friends? So your activity will be visible also to friends of friends in some cases. Also many let their friend list be public, which is also a security issue. It is by default public. But that is an inherent security problem. I actually have some I only can contact on FB messenger, and have not as a friend on FB.
