  • We're psyched to finally have a female pro skater on the show, and who better than Elissa Steamer, the first female pro skater ever. In part 1, we hang out at Elissa's house and then hear about her Toy Machine years from Jamie Thomas, Mike Maldonado, Brian Anderson, and the Muska himself. Featuring footage from Welcome to Hell, here's the beginning of a truly historic Epicly episode.

    She doesn’t get enough props when people talk about girls who walked so others could run. She’s one of those amazing women who broke down so many barriers for women. Truly someone who should be in history books. 👊🏼💜

    Wow, Muska pushed for Steamer. He moved skateboarding forward by decades by giving Steamer a chance. She was always better than a lot of the guy skaters. She deserves all the success she got but is still so underrated.

    Damn, her saying she had no idea what she was even capable of until during the filming of her first part just really hit me for some reason. I feel like that attitude is what subconsciously keeps a lot of girl skaters from pushing to be better than they are. Thankfully people like Elissa exist, as well as new generation skaters like Lizzie Armanto.

    • @laughingwolf330
      @laughingwolf330 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Krishtie Mofazzal hey, thank you! I'm actually a noob female skater, so this whole episode was just super inspiring and incredibly relatable. It made me think a lot about how sometimes we can be surrounded by awesome and supportive people, and yet still be 'held back' by our own attitude, and by negative feelings that are so deeply ingrained that we don't even understand them or where they come from. Something I need to work on with my own skating & in general!

    • @k-m___
      @k-m___ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      A Clark
      that's so awesome, I'm the same!! I feel like female skaters are sometimes lumped together too often or are always called a "female" skater rather than just a skater, also they're always compared to male skaters and people always say "she's just as good as the boys", but never that she's better. Idk I have so many things to say, even though there's more diversity now the attitudes towards female skaters needs to change, they need to be normalised

    • @laughingwolf330
      @laughingwolf330 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Krishtie Mofazzal Right on! *highfive* lol yeah I definitely do agree, rather than "damn she's a good skater" it's always "damn she's as good as the guys." Truthfully I do think sometimes it comes from within us as female skaters, at least I know I'm guilty of it. Hell, the first thing I do when I go to a park is scan quickly to see if there are any girls there, just to see if I'm not the only one, and it shouldn't be like that, I shouldn't ever care who's around when I'm skating, yet subconsciously I do. Skating is so beautiful because it's about overcoming your ego and accepting failure again and again until you get it, not caring what others think...I think maybe that's not something that girls are taught how to do, or that it's okay to do that even. IDK, I'm rambling but that's the sort of feeling I got from hearing Elyssa talk - like, despite having awesome and supportive parents, she was still doing something that was SO completely unheard of for a girl that it was like, "Can you do it? Well sure, I don't see why not!" rather than "Fuck yeah you can do it, go blow them away!" I feel like that attitude of "I think I can" still hasn't shifted fully to "I KNOW I can" for female skating, and I'm hoping that will be the pivotal moment when the sport is pushed to another level. Lizzie Armanto (who competes with dudes instead of in female comps) is another huge inspiration to me for that reason. If we want to be more than 'just as good as', then we have to change our whole perceptions of what we're capable of, too...Everyone elses' perceptions will follow.

    When I was a kid she was my biggest role model.We have the same first name and I wanted to be and still want to be an epic girl skater because of her :3. I have a classic Toy Machine board like hers in THPS. She really broke the mould. Had she not, someone else would have but the fact remains that she really brought about a change. Even so, a lot of skating videos are aimed at guys - "go out and impress that girl". I'm not going to do it to impress anyone. Just be myself. Dress/skate how I want.

    Elissa has always been a rad chick and skater. Proud to say I came up skating around the same area as her in Florida.
