Epicly Later'd: Elissa Steamer (Part 2/4)

  • In Part 2 of our Elissa Steamer episode, we hear more about what it was like for the best girl skater in the world to hang out in an all-dudes world. These were the days of making Welcome to Hell after everyone had left it all behind to try to make it in California. Days when everyone on Toy Machine would wake up, get stoned on Jamie's porch, and then go work on something that they knew was going to be special. That's how skateboarding history is made. Enjoy.

    I remember seeing her deck at 0:22 in Tony Hawks pro skater and even as a kid who was just getting into skating at the time I thought it was one of the sickest deck designs I'd ever seen. After seeing it again years later, I still do. So much respect for her

    I think it's pretty badass of Elissa to assimilate into male culture and succeed in skating in that way. As a female pioneer, I can see how that aspect was necessary for her in order to survive and be accepted in a time where there were no other female skaters. They literally say she never challenged their behavior, and I think it's because there was no room for it. Being a girl was radical enough. The culture at the time would not have accepted or embraced someone who challenged their ideologies and biases. I think female skaters are doing a lot right now to make space for themselves without having to compromise their own values with regard to sexual harassment. Being able to define your boundaries of respect without risking acceptance or a career is a major sign of progress. It also it brings up the question of how expressing femininity in a male-dominated space is seen as a respectable vs. sexual.

    • @chasethehorizonx
      @chasethehorizonx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, nah. It's more that women didn't feel the need to "take up space". Women aren't men, no matter how hard they try. Space dominance...being territorial, that's a guy thing. She was doing what women naturally do: prioritize other people and create social harmony. If society didn't constantly make women so self conscious about their performance compared to men... most women wouldn't care. And we shouldn't have to.
      She was in a unique position that not a lot of women end up because of physical, neurological, and yeah, sure, even social differences. And she navigated it sort of naturally because she was already part of that world. It doesn't need to be dissected so deeply. And men should be able to be themselves and have their own worlds and spaces without having to be self-conscious, either.
      Feminism made women too self-conscious and unhappy, and now we're pushing that on men.

    The Sundays are a great band. Don't hate. When she first started showing up in magazines me and the people I skated with wanted to find out more about her so we hunted down the videos she was on. I remember being blown away. People that say girl skaters aren't as good as guy skaters are missing the point. It's the same in MMA. Guys didn't respect the women fighters and always complain that women are better. It's not about better or worse, it's about different. Women skate differently and, in general have a completely different style and flow to their riding. I love watching the way they set up their lines, which lines they choose to ride and what tricks they do and how they string those tricks together in a run. They focus on nailing their tricks as best they can instead of throwing together a bunch of tricks that get half assed in the name of quantity over quality. It's just different and more relaxing to watch.

    This was great, I grew up skating in Fort Myers, looking up to the Toy Machine team and Welcome to Hell. I'd see her at the downtown skate park with Milligan. That was the coolest era. But yeah, I remember some of my friends saying that kinds stuff, like, oh I could do those tricks better than her, but kids are dumb haha. She's still awesome, hometown hero!

    My first board when the shapes were changing to a big nose like a double kick shape was an Ed Templeton by New Deal back in 92. My first pro board was a Schmidt Stick Lucero x2 back in the 80's. I remember watching Ellisa skate in those videos and always wondered why there was never at least an all girl skate team.?. I mean since then.

      Nate Brenneman There are; they just don't get much press for the same reasons Ed described. Check out Meow skateboards as an example and I'm sure there are others. There was also a girl skate team by Globe back in the mid-00's, but I don't know whatever happened to them.
      Edit: Apparently Hoopla and Silly Girl are also ones currently gaining ground in the skating world.

    She skated a different style then the others, he mentioned it earlier. She did more technical flat ground and that sort of stuff and didn't even do huge gaps and stuff before she was on the team. While the guys were already used to big rails and huge gaps. So they were probably filming at a 12 stair or something and she was still getting use to the 8 stair or whatever.

    I love Elissa Steamer so much. Always pumped when her part came on Welcome To Hell. I can speak on being a young skater in this era and answering to what Ed said about the negative comments they were getting because I probably made a similar comment at one point saying that I should be on Toy Machine because I can do more tricks or do it better. Well that was a young immature person of myself and now grown up I understand how negative I may have been. But that doesn’t mean that we weren’t Steamer fans. We were day one fans. We just didn’t understand the impact yet with our young minds. We had to grow to understand.

    I remember hearing dumbasses around here as well saying crap like that about Elissa and even Templeton as well. “Oh I can skate better then them. Why aren’t I pro?” So stupid to think that way. They didn’t understand that being pro isn’t about just the tricks you can do. That’s why even to this day you still have thousands and thousands of people online doing all kinds of awesome stuff but most of them will ever get even flowed a paid or shoes or a board if they are lucky. Maybe most of them can get some like bearings or wheels. But you know why? Because like I said it’s more then the tricks, it’s about being and acting like a professional as well. About having business sense, being able decide on ads, footage, help design and distribute prouducts, getting your stuff done on time and giving it 110 percent every single day, and also somehow finding time to take care of yourself and not getting too injured so that you don’t derail any of the multiple projects that pros have going on all at once, and somehow even harder and during doing all of that. Finding a way to keep yourself both relevant in the scene and pushing yourself to evolve even further then that for the next video or ad etc and all while still trying to have fun, a life, and not getting burned out on why you skated in the first place. It’s so much more then just oh I can kick flip front board shuv it out on a 12 stair handrail. Give me my pro board now, Elisa could never do that! Blah blah. Yeah ok little 13 year old tommy. Your mom still makes your sandwiches for for school every day and you believe somehow that you are a prime candidate to represent any kind of skate company out there in the huge talent pool of actual pro material people out there in the industry. That are actively involved and people that run companies actually know who they are personally and know their qualifications versus someone like you who they know absolutely zero about and wouldn’t recognize you on the street and the only thing they can see about you is your 10 second Instagram clips that does nothing to show to them anything about your character. Just yay you can do a trick that someone else on my team could do as well. So what? Sorry for the rant but this kind of mentality always bugged the hell out of me, even when I was younger.

    Imagine being some random skater in the late 90’s/early 00’s and thinking you were better than her.

    If I was walking down the street and saw a bunch of skate shoes and decks in the trash, I would cream my pants and proceed to play trash santa handing out shoes and decks to my friends that travel and are just homebums that are too poor to afford skate shit.

    Watching this I wonder: why is there even a seperate category for women in skateboarding contests? I mean, there are super young skaters (basically children, like sabre norris a few years ago) competing against adults so why can't women compete against men?
