Here is why many people turn down the interview: smart people who are wealthy realize that they can be an easy target for someone looking to open a lawsuit on them, or target them another way. While being kind, they politely turn down an interview based on a possible threat or publicizing their likeness. Edit: most wealthy people do not want to be famous
Something I learned as a NYer is the use of muted colours and accessories that look fun and artsy. I havent lived there is almost 20 years but I still use gray and beige as a base in year long styles and it somehow looks more expensive than it actually is
Great video! I loved that everyone was wearing quite relaxed comfortable styles. No super trendy recognizable brands- maybe thats what money really buys, - security - not needing to make a statement about what you can afford.
I feel like once you have a certain amount of money, you just don't need to show it off, because you stop needing to prove yourself to anyone, especially old money, where in their circles, the family name probably speaks for itself. That being said, some of those comfortable clothes were deceptively expensive. that mackage coat was over $1,000 for instance haha
@@CynicalDuchess Anything thats cashmere is expensive and if its all wool.. and a lot of them were wearing wool and cashmere, which is excellent in the winter because it breaths far better then the plastic clothing which is warm but doesn't breath well. Also in general, most affluent people I know don't put it on parade and will for example not wear their most expensive things unless they are on vacation or in specific locations, wouldn't wear that stuff on the street. It's more new money who buys the showy stuff (aside from purses, for whatever reason purses are a big thing for everyone). It's more in their jewelry if you can spot real jewelry that I find is one of the bigger indicators but I don't mean the classics all the vloggers/instamodels get.
@@CynicalDuchess I have known of someone who got kicked out of an establishment because he looked like a hobo. That is not classy and definitely not of well repute

Jocelyn wearing her mother’s coat and scarf really just touched my heart. Sentimental items are always worth the most, no matter how much or how little they cost. LOVED this video! Bravo!
Advice from clothing researcher John T. Molloy years ago: if you want to learn how to recognize quality clothing, you have to actually go into high-end stores and examine the clothes. The feel, the colors, the construction, etc. There's no substitute for that experience.
I’m personally still stuck in the 2010s fashion because I became a mom and stopped caring about trends. With that being said, all these people’s clothes remind me of the late 90s and early 2000s super casual style. I should get on that trend lol
Yes late 90s - early 2000s styles have made a comeback. I too feel like a lot of my stuff is still very 2010s but when you think about it it’s not that long ago so who cares lol. I miss the early 2010s fashion even tho I hear a lot of ppl hate it lol.

I can say my experience living there a lot of people wear MAX MARA now a lot of people don’t know the brand max Mara compared to Gucci, Prada, etc but a lot of the clothes from max Mara is more expensive especially their coats plus it doesnt show their logo in the clothing which is nice and the reason why there is so many people wearing max Mara is because the quality of the fabrics compared to a brand like Gucci, Alexander wang etc. Fun facts LV, Gucci, prada, Celine is not what most people think is expensive but brands like Giambattista Valli,Jada Dubai,Azzedine Alaia, and brands like Ermenegildo Zegna Bespoke and other most people havent heard before because there is no logo and sometimes you need to have an wait list for one of the suits made
@@gwena9043 emm i dont know a book or blog about this but I do know that brands like coach, prada etc have clothes made in the same factory with the exact same material and look exactly the same like a simple white t-shirt but at the very end, they were given different tags and different logos. Sometimes they would add some details on it to differentiate the clothing but that doesnt change the fact the materials are exactly the same yet the same white Tshirt From prada would cost differently at coach ( A big price difference) . Another example is Kylie Jenner’s makeup line is in the same company as colourpop and for some products the color and formula is the exact the same yet there is such a different price differences and not because the product is different because it has the exact same formula but just because the product is labeled with a different brand.
I've noticed that with wealthy people on a casual day, you will usually catch the most expensive items to be their shoes, bags and lastly their coats, not necessarily the rest of their clothes. I know someone who's very wealthy and buys expensive shoes so that she can keep on wearing them for years.
I go to school a block away from the place u were filming on the UES (or carnegie hill as ur calling it), sad that I missed u! honestly I think the most realistic/representative fits u showed are the high schoolers at 0:53. suuuuper common for girls to wear sweatpants/leggings under their uniform skirts.
I love that they also wear Zara and Uniqlo. they have great basics and very comfy (Uniqlo) and these are the brands that I can afford right now. also I wanted to wear coats and cashmere for style but not possible as I live in a tropical country 😂
the stuff I've gotten from uniqlo have lasted me forever, and they're so comfy I don't want to donate them just yet. I think if they ever get to that point, they wouldn't even be fit to be donated bc of how worn they would be.
All I know is that I’ll never be that rich unless something dramatic in my life happens. Wear what you want to wear. Be who you are. I have my own bias on first appearance but I still give people chances to get to know them.
I work with very rich families in Manhattan & one thing I noticed they don't use Gucci, Dior & some other brands that "shouts". They prefer very eclusive & expensive brands l only known to their circles. For casual use they wear Gap, J Crrew, Urban Decay, Zara to name a few. True rich people in Manhattan are not conscious of designer brands but more of quality. These people have a trained eyes & feel for quality. It's only people who are "trying hard to belong" are the most conscious of designers.
I go to a university with kids from the 1% and they wear patagonia, lululemon, and vineyard vines. Stuff you can get used online for $30, so I have no problem fitting in.
As somebody who isn't rich but grew up in Carnegie Hill I would say it comes from the upbringing not just how we look or the money some have I think it comes from the cultured environment that is so tight knit like on the large apartment complexes in Carnegie Hill with pools and gyms and parks and playgrounds within the building sometimes even small stores it condenses and breeds the feeling of old money and also many people in this area use to their advantage the power of knowing people and having contacts with people in the new money districts
I grew up with my father working in LA and Hollywood a lot for his job in entertainment and literally the SECOND the in shape 60 year old awesome dude started talking I was like "He's in entertainment." There's just such a funny, identifiable way so many New York based, Hollywood commuting types talk and act and I love it. Made me feel fuzzy and nostalgic. Actually a lot of this did, like the girls outside their school. I almost went to Dwight before we changed paths and didn't move into NYC full-time and I could have seen what those girls looked like with my eyes closed lol. 15 years on, high school girls are the same. My experience with fashion in the upper upper class parts of Manhattan tends to be more geared toward pieces handed down in families, vintage shoppers, and expensive luxury brands that aren't like THIS SHIRT IS FROM GUCCI obvious. There's a certain rich where everyone is tailored in nice outfits and look put together but wouldn't be caught dead in anything with logos all over it. A lot of extremely expensive accessories, but still, not always the ones with the huge logos or monogrammed prints. Kind of like, "I know I'm rich, everyone I know knows I'm rich, I honestly really don't care if you think I am or not. My apartment has two floors." Also, went to rehab (yes, life went sideways for me for a while) with an ULTRA rich city kid (I lived in CT and a lot of city dwellers would come in for rehab)...I mean probably one of the richest people I've ever interacted with (he was BIG angry at his parents for only allowing him access to his checking account and taking his savings and credit cards away because of his heroin habit...and that account had "only, like, 300k in it". He dressed like a homeless person while wearing thousand dollar plus outfits...and it wasn't the heroin, that was the style at his school and in his friend group. Literally left rehab one evening, had his driver pick him up with his girlfriend in the back with syringe ready, went to a fashion show, got into a fight with Lindsay Lohan, came back the next day with a bruise and his tail between his legs. Lived a life so few will ever experience, and he was still miserable. The woman in the headscarf and full silk was beyond chic and I hope you and the Tiffany's guy are dating now. Thanks for reading my first novel.

Jesus is the true love she is looking for. The LORD sets prisoners free,8the LORD gives sight to the blind, the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down, the LORD loves the righteous.9The LORD watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. Was raised, and still live, in an area of Brooklyn more historic and posh than even Carnegie Hill, and noticed old money doesn't scream status like most assume. They live for J. Crew, LL Bean, and Land's End though. Craftsmanship, quality fabrics, and real design, no gawdy labels on athletic wear for sportswear in the daytime. Looking expensively normal and put together is their beacon to each other, not consumerism. Also, notice their haircuts were good and skin well maintained.

What am I wearing in Indiana where it's 18 degrees right now-- sweater by Peter Manning, True Classic t-shirt, flannel-lined, gray camo, Wrangler cargo pants, Penguin socks, and Troentorp clogs. Like this format. I miss New York!
Wondering if the Ralph Lauren Cashmere sweater from the Movie Guy was Black label or Purple? To me? All of these people seemed down to earth and easy to talk to. I could fake my way through the Upper East side with Zara, Ralph Lauren, and some Burberry from the resale shops.
they are wearing non branded no logorific clothes in many cities around the world due to security concerns. if you go to certain countries like UAE Monaco Singapore and many mega cities in China they are all wearing their DIOR and millions on their wrists and richard milles because its safe to do so. but let me burst your bubble, go inside the homes of wealthy people and open their closets , youd see full of branded stuff.
That is not true. Only the new rich wear popular luxury clothes. The real rich wear elegant clothes from brands much more expensive than regular gucci ,versace. Even the seemingly normal shirts cost 10000s of dollars.Money speaks and true wealth whispers. The reason why so many people in East go all out flashy is because of their new found money
Style wise, usually people want something other people can’t have/find. I think it’s peoples taste whether they want the brand on it or not. Rich brand = good quality so ofc they’re gonna buy them. You don’t see Bella Hadid wearing Forever 21. Sorta why thrifting has been so popular, you never know if you run into a dead stock item or not. Scarcity runs fashion and money.

The richest people I knew in my life were never too flashy with their large purchases. They never spent alot on their food, cars, or really as far as I could tell clothing. They had vintage high quality jewelry that seemed tasteful and not too out there. Now this is not to say they did not spend money. Really, they just spent it elsewhere. Travel (been around the world I swear ) and on good values. So patagonia, vintage leather bags, vintage furs, burberry, silk scarves. I left a comment on your shorts saying that I was looking for this video, I'm happy TH-cam found it for me and recommended it, I wanted to share some insight on to why you're having trouble talking to people at Carnegie Hill and you'd have the same issue on the upper east side as well, as a former resident of 422 Park area I can tell you that the vast majority of people tend to be incredibly private and not interested in sharing because it's personal. Clothing choices are made on quality and comfort usually not to showy. I've also found throughout my life that if you're wearing anything covered in logos especially big Louis Vuitton or other purses you're typically judged to be poor or just middle class trying to pretend to be rich by signaling to others. There's so much nuance here that the comment would be hell along but I appreciate the video and it was an interesting share it's nice to see
their wealth is not invested in their clothing - but in things you cannot see. property, stocks, private schools, exorbitant vacations, top tier health insurance and other services. ppl all over NYC pretty much wear similar shit. basic outfits with the occasional expensive piece thrown in. you can find mid-priced nike suits paired with 800-1500 dollar sneakers in even the most poverty stricken areas. having money and having wealth are two different things.
@Rainbow Rose Princess Mishti Absolutely, my comment was by no means a criticism of the girls. I whole heartily think you should wear what you like. I was just genuinely surprised that their school allowed such short skirts, especially as part of a school uniform.

You will find him shopping in Walmart and will never know he is loaded. Never judge a book by its cover.
@@Threedogsandacat I love this comment, it’s so true! I waited tables and bartended for 20 years and have talked to thousands and thousands of people. It was such a valuable experience bc it taught me how to talk to all kinds of different people, with different interests and backgrounds, and it also taught me that we’re really all the same at the end of the day, regardless of class or stereotype. It’s a truly humbling realization 🖤

VERY honorable mention to the sir at 07:00 from West Village with the very good humour and that aged like fine wine clearly. "you do not hire robert redford, you partner with robert redford"
this is the first video i watch from you btw and i loved it 💕
Here is why many people turn down the interview: smart people who are wealthy realize that they can be an easy target for someone looking to open a lawsuit on them, or target them another way.
I mean 'eat the rich' is real

No one wears showy labeled clothing, it’s very understated. Most ppl are private & don’t want to be filmed + when we’re outside (especially in winter) we have somewhere to be & don’t have time to stop.
Yeah. It’s difficult to find anybody dressed gaudily

The way she says “peace” was just not casual. Wasnt generic tone. It was deep.

Fun facts LV, Gucci, prada, Celine is not what most people think is expensive but brands like Giambattista Valli,Jada Dubai,Azzedine Alaia, and brands like Ermenegildo Zegna Bespoke and other most people havent heard before because there is no logo and sometimes you need to have an wait list for one of the suits made
I love Max Mara! so chic and understated
@@CynicalDuchess yep especially the fabric and quality :D
could you recommend other similar brands? or a resource where I could find such brands? a book or blog perhaps? :))
Max Mara has some good stuff and Loro paina too
I've noticed that with wealthy people on a casual day, you will usually catch the most expensive items to be their shoes, bags and lastly their coats, not necessarily the rest of their clothes.
Daniel, the young Asian man, put it most aptly…”if you’re not wearing something fancy…”. Great insight to his world.
'i dress up my dog for a living' is such a flex
for me one thing I would want that money can't buy would have to be Estella's hair! the volume and the way it falls omfg
their pants may be from Zara, but when I see a van cleef & arpels necklace, I know who I'm dealing with.
"I dress up my dog for a living." That's the American dream right there.
that true love answer was relatable...i liked the health and peace ones as well
I go to a university with kids from the 1% and they wear patagonia, lululemon, and vineyard vines. Stuff you can get used online for $30, so I have no problem fitting in.
Estella at 1:25…. STUNNNNNNNING. her facial structure is insane.
Such a great video!! I loved the questions you asked… and the responses, especially the gentleman in the grey sweater who worked with Mr. Redford.
As somebody who isn't rich but grew up in Carnegie Hill I would say it comes from the upbringing not just how we look or the money some have I think it comes from the cultured environment that is so tight knit like on the large apartment complexes in Carnegie Hill with pools and gyms and parks and playgrounds within the building sometimes even small stores it condenses and breeds the feeling of old money and also many people in this area use to their advantage the power of knowing people and having contacts with people in the new money districts
to the woman that said money can’t buy her a true love, i hope she is doing well
I grew up with my father working in LA and Hollywood a lot for his job in entertainment and literally the SECOND the in shape 60 year old awesome dude started talking I was like "He's in entertainment." There's just such a funny, identifiable way so many New York based, Hollywood commuting types talk and act and I love it.
My apartment has two floors."
Also, went to rehab (yes, life went sideways for me for a while) with an ULTRA rich city kid (I lived in CT and a lot of city dwellers would come in for rehab)...I mean probably one of the richest people I've ever interacted with (he was BIG angry at his parents for only allowing him access to his checking account and taking his savings and credit cards away because of his heroin habit...and that account had "only, like, 300k in it".

Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save.4When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.5Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God,6the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them-- the LORD, who remains faithful forever.7He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry.

Purple label is the most expensive. Black is not as pricey
@@aoutsky I know purple, I think black label was discontinued a while back according to what I looked up
they are wearing non branded no logorific clothes in many cities around the world due to security concerns. if you go to certain countries like UAE Monaco Singapore and many mega cities in China they are all wearing their DIOR and millions on their wrists and richard milles because its safe to do so. but let me burst your bubble, go inside the homes of wealthy people and open their closets , youd see full of branded stuff.
lol
Ever heard of protestantism? Yeah, look it up. That's just one of the reasons why this is false.
I recommend watching this video by Mina Lee a fashion historian. She breaks down the old money aesthetic versus the new money aesthetic.

They traveled a lot so I believe they didn't want to draw too much attention to themselves.
Interesting

Am I the only one who can’t believe the length of those girls’ school skirts? Seriously, my school would absolutely flip out if mine was that short!!
@Rainbow Rose Princess Mishti Absolutely, my comment was by no means a criticism of the girls. I whole heartily think you should wear what you like. I was just genuinely surprised that their school allowed such short skirts, especially as part of a school uniform.
I'm trying to remember from 20 yrs ago, but I think my school's rule was no shorter than 5 inches above the knee!
they're rolled up usually so you wouldn't see them under the jacket since a skirt sweatpants combo could look a bit odd to the random eye
Maybe they shrunk in the wash.
Most uniforms I’ve seen in NYC are short indeed!
