      Hygiene is very important to some. I very much appreciate the idea that he has a shower in there! Small “necessarium” of some kind and a means to get to the driver’s seat in a hurry and it’s perfect!

      Yes under-bed storage. I'd lower the bed though, so it's a seat as well as a bed, then some overhead storage might be okay. For safety I'd like to be able to get to the front, from the inside, a sliding door and loosing the middle seat would work.

    I have lived on the road for over 25 years and now over 5 on the water, I have to say this is one of the best short wheel base conversions I have seen, the shower for a start, the extending seating, bloody good job you done there, we always had to live and convert at same time and with two kids was always a challenge, went from an old BT sherpa Box van, to a 7.5 ton dodge 50 van then onto a converted ex leeds welfare bus and now a 30ft 7 berth motorhome.

    • @lawrencepatricio5776
      @lawrencepatricio5776 ปีที่แล้ว

      But how can you use the pullout table for work or eating when the pullout bench is directly below the table? And those overhead storage above the bed is gonna cause you pain. I've seen a better layout for a short-wheel base.

  • @MamaKim.
    @MamaKim. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    Well done Ben. Very different design and you got lots in a small space. Perfect for one. No need for a big bed when a solo traveller. Sure cupboards make it a little cramped but you need somewhere to store clothes and you’ll be laid down anyway. Much safer to keep the bulkhead, yes you have to go outside to get in the cab but if you were unfortunate enough to have an accident you’ll be protected, that’s more important. Better temperature control too. Presume you’ll have a portable loo in that long shower. You could have had it a little shorter and then had tall storage in the rear accessed from the back (like Nate’s Land Yacht video) but it gives you room for a loo without having to move it to have a shower. You could store a dirty laundry bag in there too. The pull out table is perfect for extra workspace, or a standing desk, just can’t work out how you sit and eat at it or work. Maybe a fold up stool, stored in the shower? Then you could sit at your table and have a view. The pull out bench gives you somewhere for the fridge and to sit, yet freeing up floor space when not needed so that’s great; storage too. You just need a good big back rest cushion. Overall I think you’ve done a superb job and I’ve watched thousands of these conversion videos.. I’m obsessed! The one thing that really makes this stand out too is the colour. That blue is stunning. Just beautiful, I love it! You can’t beat Farrow and Ball. Put this video on your own channel too then we can follow you. I’d be interested to know how you go on with your electrics. I don’t want gas either! Safe travels.

    It's interesting how the European habit of closing off the cab area from the cargo gives more options to the layout. However, in North America, having the cab area connected to the rest of the van is more common and even preferred for simply jumping into the driver's seat and driving off without exiting the van whenever you feel threatened.

    • @johnwang9914
      @johnwang9914 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DS-tj2jc Never mind the fact that the Ram Promaster is really a rebadged Fiat, The Ford Metro is what they've had in Europe for over 40 years and of course the Mercedes Sprinter is the Mercedes Sprinter (older Promasters were also Sprinters). There actually hasn't been an American cargo van for several decades ever since the Sprinter changed the trends, with the exception of GM vans, you simply can't find the traditional American van anymore, they're almost all based on European vans. Having said that, the tall narrow European van style are much easier to convert into livable vans.

    Great original first van build mate! Nice one.. add a toilet, powered fan, and sort the top cupboards and you're away!.. perhaps up the power like you said maybe a second battery to double your power reserve.
    (Just a thought you could make the rear of the shower a door and use it as a dual indoor outdoor shower and perhaps accessible from outside and any wet storage you have also to help it air?/maybe add a second ceiling vent also to get airflow through the shower area and rest of the van just to increase the airflow/jeep it cool and help it dry? Just couple of ideas)

      Or split the space and use 1/2 for storage and bump a smaller bench out a little bit back to the wall and give up the small cubbies, (it's under the table now and kills the purpose)..very cute for a smaller van 👏👏👏

      I can see the point of the overhead storage - you could get dressed on the bed, and you don't need any side table or nook, just put everything away for the night. But I know if it was me I'd conk my head on it.
      Without it he'd have great headroom.

    Can tell he's an engineering student and not a design student. The layout with the small single bed and overhead cupboards over the bed, is really bad design, which would only sleep 1 person. Also you can't sit and use the slide-out table unless you straddle yourself on the pull-out seat, which would be uncomfortable. The slide-out seat also takes up most of the "garage" storage too. That shower is freaking awesome, but maybe too big. I see lots of wasted space in there. Run some trim around that skylight too. The kitchen is so awesome. Nice touch with the angle back to the shower wall. Love that blue. The colour palet of the whole van is perfect. Walling off the cab area is a good move too, given he has a 2 seater there for the passenger seat and they're not easy to swivel. That wall really creates a good separation of space. The build quality and finish looks very nice. Just needed a better design to start with. His solar panels will struggle in Ireland too, especially in the winter. The demands of an induction cooktop and electric hot water heater will far outstrip the 200ah of AGM battery, which is only really 100ah of usable storage. Needs a 40A DC to DC charger there, and another 200ah of storage at least. I know my comment comes across as negative, but it's a really nice van, just with some iffy design elements.

  • @lizsteeds6697

    Have you an extractor fan in the shower? You will get mould and so much condensation if not ... also you will def need maxx fan or similar for inside van interior to circulate air in summer and extract cooking steam etc. as rainy days or warm summer days will make your van uncomfortable to live in.
    Great aesthetic ... but some liveability issues that can be fixed I am sure.

      Lol we live in NI. We don’t need to use fans or air con. We are lucky if we get a couple of weeks of nice weather a year that get into the 60s. Open a window an someone is bound to say to shut it as it’s blinking freezing lol. On the coast it’s of course colder. So Ben I have a ford mk2 1983 ex ambulance and I tried to explain to my mate last week that I want to divide the back for my shower an loo an have a 3.6”wide bed as it’s only me and my dog. I also said I wanted an L shaped kitchen and to close off the living area and have a door through to the cab as I don’t have side doors so I’ve extra wall space. I don’t like bench seats but I’d rather lounge so have a mega size floor cushion and back rest for us to snuggle on. All my electrics storage etc is in the boot under the bed. Only difference is that at the end of my bed I have steps going up to my bed for my dog that double as my clothing drawers. I think the shower is an absolute necessity if ur on the waves every day - the alternative is gritty sand in places u definitely don’t want it and I’m afraid a sponge bath doesn’t cut it. Anyway now il just forward this to him instead. Will subscribe when you have ur channel sorted as love watching for ideas from NI and you have done a brilliant job. Will look out for you on our travels. All the best 🤞🏻🤗🤞🏻

    Like some of the other comments. I would remove the over bed storage and perhaps tuck a toilet down the end of the shower room. You could also potentially have a cupboard above the toilet that is accessed from the back end of the bed giving you some storage given you sit down on the loo and don’t need the head clearance.
    But like all things, it’s easy to critique others 😉 so most importantly, van is great!

      In the Netherlands you need a two person sleep to be able to get it rated as camper and pay less tax. Otherwise I would have a one sleep too.

    I live the colors! I'm leaning towards having this type of floor plan in a longer van. I would like to have the shower open in the back also so you can enter wet or dirty and leave the mess in the shower! Very nice build. What a Beautiful coast! Happy Travels!

    A pull up desk beside the electric stove. The cabinet for clothes beside the bed remove that then make the pull up chair devide to two, one can be pulled inside the van(where the fridge is) then at the back of the van the other side is for clothes.

    Great van especially for a first time build but I see you have a double induction hob cooker but only a 2000w inverter? Whats the wattage of the hob? Doesn't seem like the inverter would be big enough for the job. I suspect you'll need more battery power in time as well if you want to cook with induction as it uses lots of power quickly.

      Hi there! Yeah it’s a compromise I made. I am only able to use one at a time when off grid! And am upgrading the battery when I have the money!🤣
