Third Eye Blind - "Crystal Baller" - Acoustic + Lead & Rhythm Guitar Covers

- Hey guys! Welcome back to another video. I am continuing my Third Eye Blind guitar cover project series with "Crystal Baller" from their third studio album "Out of the Vein" released in 2003.
This is my first OOTV cover and with the album turning 20 in May, I figured it was time to relearn some of the incredible riffs this album offers.
Out of the Vein marked a change within Third Eye Blind's lineup as guitarist Tony Fredianelli debuted with the band on the record. He had joined the band in 2000 following the departure of the original lead guitarist Kevin Cadogan. Before the band had settled on a final lineup, Fredianelli was briefly a member of 3EB dating back to the very beginning of the band.
"Crystal Baller", despite being one of the VERY few songs on OOTV to be in standard tuning, has a very complex fingerpicking riff played by frontman Stephan Jenkins which is played in the intro and the bridge. Fredianelli provides great lead guitar hooks that take this song to another level and end with a beautiful solo played on the neck pickup.

Another great cover! Excited for some OotV things; a lot of the stuff on this record (lyrics, riffs, etc) are very underrated. I think some of SJ’s best lyrical work shows up on this album, and Fredianelli’s Blinded/Another Life guitar parts are right up there with some of KC’s best.

Appreciate it man! Yeah I think it’s a slept on album for sure. Fredianelli really showed a lot of his Cadogan influence on the record and some of the tunings he used are insane.

Wow that’s pretty interesting! Can’t think of too many folks who cite a dopamine song as their favorite. I always liked that album even when it came out.
@@BDKelso2000 I saw them in a tiny club called Bottom of the Hill in SF before that album came out. They played the whole album and that one stuck out to me.
Nice! It’s always great when a band plays an album from front to back live. All of the former members of Third Eye Blind (Kevin, Arion, & Tony), performed the entire self/titled album back in 2017 for the 20th anniversary. From what I heard SJ shut them down which was kind of a bummer.

Thank you! I’m working on covering the first 3 Third Eye Blind records in their entirety mainly because I feel as if there are little to no guitar covers of their material on YT. With that said, the ones I have on my list for the next couple of videos are Wounded, Darkness, Motorcycle Drive-by, The Background, Burning Man, Forget Myself, & Another Life. I’m also planning to do a re-make of An Ode to Maybe which was my first video because the quality was not as good as what I have now with my editing and mixing, Eventually, I would like to branch out and do some of other bands who have little to no covers as well.

I need to know how your getting that amazing tone
Haha thanks man. All I am using is a Boss SD-1 Overdrive mixed with an EQ booster and slight compression. Tony Fredianelli’s distortion tone in my opinion was kind of a midrange sound so I figured this would be the best way to achieve it. I plan on doing it that way for the rest of the OOTV and Ursa Major covers that I do.
Edit: I am also using a Boss Super Phaser-PH-2 for the solo at the end.
