This film was released after my 13th birthday. RIP Wes Craven. Scream 1996 is indeed an excellent movie. It is considered one of the best horror films of all time, credited with revitalizing the slasher genre in the 1990s. The film is praised for its clever writing, suspenseful plot, and iconic characters. Scream 1996 is a must-see for any fan of horror films. It is a classic that is sure to stand the test of time.
Same here born in 83 so my 13th birthday hit a little bit before Scream came out. Unfortunately missed it in theaters, but saw it when it hit Blockbuster and it became one of my favorites. Seen everyone since in theaters though.
what I like about scream is it’s designed to be the most classic of classic horror movies. All the tropes, all the cheesy lines, all the dumb characters, it leans into the stereotypes so hard that it swings around to being a good palate cleanser for horror movie burnout.
Neve Campbell in this movie was sooo pretty/gorgeous. A fun fact of the movie it´s that Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers) and David Arquette (agent Dewey), had a romance in the real life, like in the film (you can see the chemistry), and were married and had a daughter (Coco Riley Arquette).
When Stu gets hit with the phone, that was actually an accident. Skeet meant to throw it behind Matthew's head so the phone landed behind Stu in the frame but that didn't happen. So Matthew saying his line about hitting him with the phone was ad-libbed and kept cause Wes loved it and found it funny. If you watch it more than once and watch Stu and Billy's facial expressions, you can tell that they are the killers especially when Billy pops up at the party in the front door, gives Stu a cue that everything is ready and that he took care of Tatum. Stu and Billy were also in constant communication cause Billy says to Stu "I thought you said she was dead" talking about Gale running her van into the tree.
Drew Barrymore was more famous than Neve Cambell and was featured in all the advertising for Scream and she is the girl on the poster, so everybody went to the movie theater assuming she was the main character. Killing her off at the beginning of the movie was a big shocker at the time.
The line "Go down the street to the Mackenzie's" that Casey's dad says to her mom at the beginning is a play on Halloween. Lori tells Tommy and Lindsey to go down the street to the Mackenzie's to get help.
I liked that they picked up on how this one and Cabin in the Woods both poke fun at the genre. I think this one did it better, but like that you saw that similarity.
2:25 Wes actually didn't write that bit. It was already in the script before he was brought onboard as director. As someone who's looking to go into writing, it sucks that people don't give Kevin Williamson enough credit, since Scream was originally his baby. He wrote the original screenplay.
Six minutes in I paused to see a great image that summed up the whole reaction - Simone horrified and George laughing and clapping. I knew this one was going to be fun. Great reaction, guys!
*"Tell George he got my phone taken away cuz I busted out laughing picturing a chase scene in a studio apartment."* 😂😂😂 - Exact text my daughter (14) sent with link. She'd already handed in her test and was killing time. She just got it back lol.
When I started doing stand-up comedy in Orlando (my hometown) back in the early 1980's, my first monologue was How To Survive A Horror Movie. It had a lot of the same points this movie has as punch lines. I've often wondered if Wes Craven saw that routine.
Awesome reactions from Simone and George, to this fantastic horror movie! I love Henry " The Fonz " Winkler's cameo appearance as the school Principal and Director Wes Craven's cameo as Janitor Fred. Fun Scream Facts: The original title for Scream was going to be Scary Movie. The phone hitting Stu Macher on the head, was actually a blooper that they kept in the film. :)
The great thing about Scream was it was so self aware, in that it even though it is a serious subject it constantly refers to old Horror films and makes reference to the plot of them etc. It also spawned superb sequels, each on of them is great too with a plethora of well known actors and well worth a watch. You gotta do the sequels, the writing is just so clever.
This film was released in 1996. At that time, the slasher subgenre in horror was... well, almost extinct. The big franchises were either finished or almost finished. And along comes this film, conceived as a satire/homage and swan song/farewell to that specific genre. And it goes and resurrects it. The following years were filled with new slashers born in the shadow of Scream. By the time that momentum started to lose steam we were already in the 2000s and the old franchises came back thanks to remakes and nostalgia, and the genre is still going strong today, playing with the formula, trying new gimmicks, etc. And Scream endures. Part 7 is already being planned.
This movie is full of red herrings, like the boots you picked up on. It's actually kind of clever because if you rewatch it, they really don't have to hide who the killers are at all. They just taint the pool of characters to the point where everyone seems to be the obvious guess.
I hope someone already pointed this out, there are many horror in-jokes in the film. One being that it is the director Wes Craven as the school janitor wearing the 'Freddy' sweater, which you got. One you missed was one of the reporters was Linda Blair from The Exorcist.
He touched her chin as a comforting gesture. My fifth grade teacher in 1987 hugged me after I dislocated my finger during recess. No one thought it was weird back then.
After my second grade teacher attacked me with a wooden mallet (just for needing to use the restroom) the principal hugged me and kissed me on the cheek. It was really exactly what I needed at the time. This was in late-1983
The biggest shock in the movie Is within first 15 min they killed off an A list celebrity. This scream was inspired by a real life murder The Gainsville riper who killed college girls that looked like his mother. Drew Barrymore was supposed to play Sidney. Drew accidentally kept really calling 911 during filming the open scene. The mask was inspired by Edvard Munch's painting The Scream, he found the mask in a box while cleaning out the filming location, they looked at dozens of other Masks and they didn't like any. They than bought the rights for the mask.
@@carladavis1473well A-list is strong. They usually kill a somewhat known celeb. Maybe b/c. Drew Barrymore is maybe the most famous but I would call her B list. I only know her from ET and this, don't know if she's been in A list big films really. But its the majority of the films that have a somewhat known face killed. Like you may go 'I recognise her (or them)'
One of my fav part of these commentaries are when they guess what the movies are about and are soo wrong while creating an interesting idea for a different movie.
I was a young teen when I saw this in theatres. I was so amped up when I came out! I have gone as Ghostface every year for Halloween since and no matter how many years pass people will always be just a little hesitant around you when you don the costume. I adored the music and the score, especially for Casey's scene. I wish it had just told a more serious story though like Halloween and not gone for the meta jokey style as the movie(s) progressed. The action scenes were so well done as George indicated when he applauded at the opening. 😆 Simone's wail when Ghostface spins around at Casey was amazing! Thank you for posting this. Great memories.
Yesterday you guys asked how many people watch your reactions when they haven't seen the movie, this is probably the movie that I've watched the most reactions from. It's my third favorite film out of every film ever made. I have an entire half sleeve on my lower right arm of scream tattoos. I wish I could post a picture of one of them cuz it's my favorite tattoo but this film is a masterpiece. I'm also surprised George saw her bf tied up. I didn't notice that until this year and I watched this movie 1000 times since 98
Pretty incredible movie. The tone is masterful, shifting easily between suspense and humor. Matthew Lillard is an absolute riot. I hope you two see more of this series...please don't wait until next October!!! I was hoping that Drew Barrymore would get an Oscar nomination for this. She wouldn't have won, but a nomination for "Supporting Actress" would have been nice. This movie did win the top prize at the MTV Movie Awards, though...well deserved. (Other movies that won around that time were Terminator 2, Seven, There's Something About Mary, The Matrix and Pulp Fiction.)
So many little references throughout this that all tie together in the story, it's really brilliantly written. One you may not have got is the movie guy on the coach yelling at Jamie Lee Curtis to watch out, the killers behind you, as the killer is behind him... his name is also Jamie. Not many movies do two genres and nail both of this, this is a perfect slasher and perfect whodunnit mystery.
Fun Fact: Rose Mcgowan was easily able to get through the cat door on multiple takes so they had to fasten her so she couldn't make it through... [So in RL she would've gotten out of the garage and away lol]
You know, I just realized that rule number 3 absolutely applied to Stu. Even if he said it jokingly, he still said, “I’ll be right back” and he does die by the end.
Welcome to the satire of the scream franchise. Glad you enjoyed it. One of you mentioned the need for more movies with poor people in them may I suggest. Winter's Bone it is oscar nominated.
I love this movie for its self-awareness and cleverness. I love they play don't fear the reaper as foreshadowing when Billy sneaks into Sydney's room at the beginning I love Jamie Kennedy is yelling Jamie behind you when Ghostface was behind him and as for reactors I love how many people are concerned about the popcorn burning lol
The 1st one ,the 2nd and the 4th are the best ones .In the 2nd one Sarah Michell Gellar co -stars .She was doing Buffy at the time and had a Black Belt in Karate .Reportedly someone unexpectedly grabbed her on stand she decked them .
Mathew Lillard is awesome. There's almost no reactions to it out there, but I recommend checking out SLC Punk. His performance in that movie is soooo good.
17:32 As I understand it, this is actually footage from the _second_ take, because in the _first,_ Rose McGowan discovered she could actually fit through that door quite _easily._
This movie has the greatest opening in the history of horror movies, and one of the best ones period in any genre. Also Scream is elevated horror in the sense that it does something else well, like comedy. Scream is legitimately funny throughout the franchise. The best horror movies do something other than produce scares. They either make you laugh between the trauma or make real commentary about things like Get Out. Love that you did the best horror movies I've ever seen back to back. And don't listen to the doubters every Scream movie is fun. Scream 3 gets hate, but it is the one in the series that will make you laugh out loud with the comedic talent in that cast. Hope you watch them all.🙏
Friend had a Halloween party in his basement when these movies were a phenomenon. Had a guy dressed as Ghostface to scare people as they came in and had to go down a long hallway to the basement door (red light, halloween sound effects playing). Hearing people scream was like the doorbell. 😂
You should definitely continue with the series. The first is pretty unanimously considered the best, and the quality wavers a bit. But most Scream fans agree there isn't a bad movie in the bunch. Even the worst Scream is enjoyable, which can't be said for many other horror franchises
It should be pointed out that Wes Craven didn't write Scream. So, lines saying things like the first A Nightmare on Elm Street movie was good but the sequels sucked existed before Craven was even hired, and Craven himself stated he didn't write it.
The voice of Ghostface is Roger L. Jackson and he has done the voice Mojo Jojo in the Powerpuff Girls. I never would have guessed that the same actor plays both of those characters.
Ikr? He sounds so completely different in both roles. And he's also a part of The Walking Dead universe, he plays Chuck the homeless character in The Walking Dead Game: Season 1.
Scream is such a good series. The 3rd was the only one I felt went a little sideways, but it was still fun to watch. I've loved the three newer ones as well. They do a great job of making Ghost face more brutal and intimidating.
I wanted an honest reaction, so I didn't tell my daughter (11 then) how I felt about part 3. Her reaction halfway through: "Dad, this one kinda sucks, huh?" - We've skipped it ever since on Halloween marathons.
Simone has to be my favorite reactor on YT. The fact that she recognized the actors who play Data and Miles O'Brien ranks her pretty high. This was an awesome movie to watch when it first came out. It was at a time when horror movies were dead and this revitalized then (and opened the way to a lot of copycats). I hope you guy do at least Scream 2!!
If you're looking for a scifi horror set in a working class neighborhood, I'd highly recommend Attack the Block, featuring John Boyega's big acting break.
Dont know if was mentioned before, but when you asked during the south park reaction who that was over sadaam and satans bed it was skeet ulrich from this.😅
The mask predates the movie originally being made by Loren Gitthens for Alterian as a halloween costume but a knock off was made of the mask by Funworlds who then licensed the rights for their knock off to be used in the movie so they’re not credited for their contribution.
Speaking of Scream, George and Simone should DEFINITELY react to the Scary Movie series (even though the only one I really care about is Scary Movie 3). They'd really like it.
Also, Christopher Lee made a critique about getting stabbed when he played Sarumon. Jackson wanted something dramatic, then Lee said it's not like that. It's more like your breathe leaving you. Then then also mention how he was stabbed while he was enlisted. Lee said, "Have you any idea what kind of noise happens when somebody’s stabbed in the back? Because I do.”
Once you know how they operate, you can figure out which killer is on the phone. One likes to play games and the other is more wild and direct with his actions. Plus, both of the killers are wearing black shoes in like the fountain shots while no one else is. Also, the dad is wearing exactly the same thing at the end of the movie as he had on earlier because he has been kidnapped for a bit. The move kid is saying Jamie, look behind you talking to the TV, but his actual name is Jamie Kennedy, so it has a hidden joke.
"It can't be him. Unless, there's two people."
Great use of deduction, George.

You should have worked on this movies press junket. :)
Same here born in 83 so my 13th birthday hit a little bit before Scream came out. Unfortunately missed it in theaters, but saw it when it hit Blockbuster and it became one of my favorites. Seen everyone since in theaters though.
The shocked woman on the movie poster is Drew Berrymore. It's just hard to tell with how hyper zoomed in it is lol.
Scream is my “favorite scary movie” and I hope you guys watch the entire franchise! I think you’d love most of them!
The satire of it is called "Scary Movie."
Scream IS satire, Scary Movie is parody
The scene with ghost face behind Randy where he is saying "look out behind you Jaime" is even funnier given the actors name is Jamie Kennedy
what I like about scream is it’s designed to be the most classic of classic horror movies.
"she looks dead" lol 🤣🤣
Drew Barrymore was more famous than Neve Cambell and was featured in all the advertising for Scream and she is the girl on the poster, so everybody went to the movie theater assuming she was the main character. Killing her off at the beginning of the movie was a big shocker at the time.
Iconic
Inspired by the movie Psycho.
*"Tell George he got my phone taken away cuz I busted out laughing picturing a chase scene in a studio apartment."* 😂😂😂
- Exact text my daughter (14) sent with link.
Fun Scream Facts:
The original title for Scream was going to be Scary Movie.
The phone hitting Stu Macher on the head, was actually a blooper that they kept in the film. :)
The principal isn’t the killer, he is the Fonz tho.
The guy playing the principal did a great job, he should give acting classes
The Fonz has always been a good actor. 😊
The writer, Kevin Williamson (who also wrote Dawson Creek) also wrote The Faculty, which is a peak 90s film and highly recommended.
Ghost Face really sells some of the damage he takes. A little kick and he goes flying.
This movie is so genius. It’s like a Penn & Teller show where they tell you “this is how the trick works”. Then they do it and you’re still surprised.
This movie is full of red herrings, like the boots you picked up on. It's actually kind of clever because if you rewatch it, they really don't have to hide who the killers are at all. They just taint the pool of characters to the point where everyone seems to be the obvious guess.
Now I need Scream 2 asap!!! I love watching new people be introduced to this franchise
I hope someone already pointed this out, there are many horror in-jokes in the film. One being that it is the director Wes Craven as the school janitor wearing the 'Freddy' sweater, which you got. One you missed was one of the reporters was Linda Blair from The Exorcist.
This movie is a perfect 90's version of oldschool horror.
"Look behind you, Jamie!"
What makes that scene even more meta is that the actor who plays Randy (Movie Kid) is named JAMIE Kennedy.
Don't they kill of an A-list celebrity in every movie? I think they do, right?
Thanks IMDB trivia section bot
@@carladavis1473well A-list is strong. They usually kill a somewhat known celeb. Maybe b/c. Drew Barrymore is maybe the most famous but I would call her B list. I only know her from ET and this, don't know if she's been in A list big films really. But its the majority of the films that have a somewhat known face killed. Like you may go 'I recognise her (or them)'
@@nether2227 thx
I mean, it's gotta be a Psycho homage, right? They did a similar thing in Dressed to Kill
One of my fav part of these commentaries are when they guess what the movies are about and are soo wrong while creating an interesting idea for a different movie.
Fred the janitor is played by Wes Craven.
Simone looked so mad at herself after that final jumpscare. 😀
The look on Simone's face a split second after the scare jump at the very end, just before the credits, hilarious lmao.
I like that the most horrific aspect for George and Simone is the size of these American McMansions
Fun fact, the cleaner in the school hallway dressed as freddy was wes craven funny enough
But also nobody catches Randy saying "ill c u in the kitchen with a knife" like omg we totally do lol 💜🙂
Welcome to the satire of the scream franchise. Glad you enjoyed it. One of you mentioned the need for more movies with poor people in them may I suggest. Winter's Bone it is oscar nominated.
Watching "Scary Movie" right after this is a 10/10 experience, btw. Y'all should add it to a poll, or just send it!
7:43 I have never heard a more true statement describing modern housing. 😂😂😂
He make’s good D&D products now along with acting.
Slc punk is soooo good
17:32 As I understand it, this is actually footage from the _second_ take, because in the _first,_ Rose McGowan discovered she could actually fit through that door quite _easily._
Hope you watch them all.🙏
I would put Screams opening sequence second behind the opening sequence of 28 Weeks Later
FACTS!!! I luv em all!!!
Agreed, they're alot of fun! I really enjoyed the sequels though, the last two were great too, really surprised me how good they were.
It should be pointed out that Wes Craven didn't write Scream. So, lines saying things like the first A Nightmare on Elm Street movie was good but the sequels sucked existed before Craven was even hired, and Craven himself stated he didn't write it.
This is definitely my favorite scary movie, it redefined the genre as a whole and I just love the overall satirical tone
Absolutely. Apart from S3, the rest are really consistently good to great.
I wanted an honest reaction, so I didn't tell my daughter (11 then) how I felt about part 3. Her reaction halfway through:
"Dad, this one kinda sucks, huh?"
- We've skipped it ever since on Halloween marathons.
4 might be better than this one. Close call
@@OneArmedRetroGamerI go back and forth. I love that one, too.
Oh, good shout. Brilliant film.
Seconded.
Thirded.
"You hit me with the f'n phone, you d**k!" was entirely ad-lib 😂 Ulrich was meant to slam the phone on the counter, but missed and hit Lillard. 😂😂😂
I had forgotten how fun that movie was
When I was 13 and this came out, all of the references and meta humor flew right over my head 😂
Speaking of Scream, George and Simone should DEFINITELY react to the Scary Movie series (even though the only one I really care about is Scary Movie 3). They'd really like it.
You have to admire how self-aware this movie is. A parody so subtle no one got it
The opening to this movie… THAT is how you launch a franchise!
Simone’s face after the last jump scare. Chef’s kiss.
They are all worth watching and I’m so glad y’all enjoyed this ^_^
Hope to see you continue the journey 🙏🥳
Skeet Ulrich is the guy in the picture behind Satan and Saddam in the South Park movie. You guys were like who the hell is that?
i cant watch this movie without think immediately in scary movie i just cant.
I'm hoping they watch scary movie next.
Watch I Know What You Did Last Summer and the Blair Witch Project before you watch Scary Movie.
