It really is a gift to see this for the first time so long after it was made. But nostalgia is also something to cherish. I snuck and watched Scream with my older brother when I was 6, and I’ve loved movies, especially horror, ever since!
Which was itself an homage to one of the prototypical 'slasher genre' films: Psycho. No one thought Janet Leigh would die either because she was marketed as the star of the film.
She was originally going to be Sidney, but scheduling conflicts (I think) lead her to be unable to fulfill that, so she proposed her character die super early!
Fun fact, Gale (the journalist) and Dewey (the dorky cop) got married in real life after they met on this set! If you watch Friends from like Season 3 and up, you can see the credits change from Courtney Cox to Courtney Arquette ❤. They divorced after 14 years of marriage in 2013 but remain really good friends to this day.
Another fun fact. Matthew Lillard and Neve Campbell were dating after they add lipped "I always had a thing for ya!" and "In Your dreams." In fact, in SCREAM 2 he got cameo, because he got to pick up Neve from set. 😏
After Courtney married David Arquette, there's an episode of Friends where in the opening credits every actor has -Arquette added to their last name. I always found that sweet
A few fun facts: First, it was Drew Barrymore's idea that she be the first to die. She said that if she died first, nobody would know what to expect next. 2. The actress who played Tatum was actually able to fit through the cat door and the producers had to staple her shirt to the frame to keep her from falling out. 3. Kenny, the cameraman, used the last of his strength to point Sidney toward the back door of the news van so she could escape. If you watch carefully, he points toward the back of the van and says "the door" seconds before he dies..... I hope to see you react to the sequels!
Drew Barrymore was actually a big name already when that movie came out and she was front and center in the posters and everything, making it seem like she was the main character. It was on purpose to fool the audience. And apparently it was Drew's idea. The producers wanted her to play Sidney, but Drew herself said it would be more interesting if she played Casey.
The reporter character who asks Sidney how it felt to almost be “brutally butchered” was played by none other than Linda Blair - little possessed Regan from The Exorcist
The element I noticed no one ever catches is when Stu and Randy are talking in the video store. Behind them is a promotional poster for the film 'Mother's Boys' starring Jamie Lee Curtis, who also starred in 'Halloween' which plays within the film and was an obvious influence. The plot of that film is of a woman who "abandons" her husband and three sons then attempts to get him back from his new girlfriend and convinces her eldest son that the girlfriend is the thing standing in the way of their family reuniting. It doesn't really make for a motive for Billy until you know his connection to Sid's mother but once you do it's a clever little in-joke to the audience on repeated views which goes perfect with the meta vibes of the whole thing.
Billy telling Sidney to get over her mom being murdered is what sealed the deal for me. I was convinced that if he wasn't the killer, he was in on it somehow. The ridiculous lack of compassion for something like that. "Get over your mom being slaughtered because it's been 364 days." Wowww.
Fun fact: Randy is played by Jamie Kennedy-it’s a fun little joke to have him tell Jamie Lee Curtis to look behind her when Ghostface is behind him @ 49:46
It’s funny, because I’ve always seen the principal being nice to Sidney as him just being a little extra caring and concerned for her because of the situation with her mom which had only happened a year before. We as the audience don’t know that yet, so we’re meant to find it a little sus, but after many watch-throughs it’s really just him trying to be sympathetic, because he already knows of her trauma.
I've noticed that every single reactor to this movie mentions how "creepy" it is that he touches her chin and they're all so weirded out by it that they immediately suspect him, but I (and I think other viewers of the time) never saw it as anything other than a caring gesture.
The janitor in the hallway is a callback to Freddy Krueger.. because this movie is by the same director as Nightmare on Elm Street.. Wes Craven. That is Wes himself, playing the janitor!
You definitely should watch the entire franchise. This is actually the one horror franchise that never goes off the rail. Every single installment is good. If you liked the whodunnit aspect of it, the second one will grip you even harder than this one!
No matter how many times I've seen a movie, it is always incredibly enjoyable to watch with y'all. I've been really sick with pneumonia, and this video made my week 🥺
Drew WAS the '90s. Also secretly a producer for Scary Movie/Scream (original title) who got Craven involved and suggested she should play the opening instead of the lead because then people would think anything can happen.
Scream came out at a time when teen slashers were considered a played-out cliche, they just weren't a thing anymore. This film found a way to make that audience cynicism work in its favor by making the film itself a bit of a tongue-in-cheek satire and ended up totally reinvigorating the genre, inspiring a whole new wave of slasher films and franchises, some still going strong today. Also at the time Drew Barrymore was the most famous of the "teen" actors and was featured heavily in the marketing so when she died right at the beginning it came as a total shock.
It's changed now, but way back when (in the UK) we never had school lockers...they weren't a thing. We had to carry everything around with us all day long. The only thing I ever saw in the corridors at my school were chairs (for the 'bad' kids to sit on when they got chucked out of class for their behaviour).
One fun detail I noticed on one of my recent Scream rewatches is that the three main survivors each broke one of the three rules. I’ve rewatched these movies so many times and I still notice new details every time.
"The Chamber of Secrets has been opened." 😂😂😂 You know, even if it wouldn't be a first time reaction, I'd totally be down for a Harry Potter series reaction from you guys.
@@JackDanReact Please take the real world harm JKR has brought into this world with her transphobia and holocaust denial into consideration and reconsider doing a Harry Potter reaction. I don't think this is something you guys would want to support.

Great reaction! In relation to the comment about people being inspired by this movie, two teenage boys were convicted of the murder of a classmate in Idaho in 2006. She was part of their friend group. They were trying to recreate the first murder (Drew Barrymore), but the victim’s boyfriend got picked up by his mother before the ambush would take place, probably saving him. Sadly, that left his girlfriend alone in the house. There are several true crime documentaries on TH-cam about the case. The victim’s name was Cassie Jo Stoddart. (Drew’s name in the movie was Casey.) She was supposed to be the first of a spree, but the killers got caught.
It’s my only day off for the week, raining alll day, currently just woke up and plan on spending the day in bed. Cheers lads for this one! Perfect timing, have a lovely week bois and girls
It's always fun to try and guess who the killer/s are. Wish I could watch this franchise for the first time all over again. Can't wait for y'all's reaction to scream 2.
I saw this opening weekend in 1996 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I'd just gotten my driver's license and was so excited as I was able to legally get into R rated movies for the first time . This was heavily promoted as a Drew Barrymore film. Her face was everywhere, She was even HUGE on the movie poster. ...... and then, 5 minutes in..... KablaammOO, slaughter.. I very quickly became a shocked, drooling, mess on the floor of the theatre. I luv you Wes Craven
Watching this back and it's a mad cast when you think about it! Paige from Charmed Shaggy from Scooby Doo Monica from Friends Little girl from E.T. Reagan from The Exorcist The Fonz from Happy Days Sabertooth from Wolverine
Jack, seeing you confidently call it out right at the gate only to second-guess yourself moments later was the most entertaining start to my day in ages!
Nah, we want the murder club! LOL!!! XD Scream is my favorite horror film series! They are the most consistent horror series of all time. Keep watching them all! Scream 7 is planned to come out next year!
Scream is one of my favorite horror franchises. I love the humor and subversion of trope. Also, I appreciate that the villains are just two teenage guys and react accordingly. Ghostface isn’t some unstoppable force, he can be affected by fighting back.
They used anamorphic lenses that look like animal/cat eyes that gets stretched out to widescreen in post. Zoomed all out it gives a pretty trippy fisheye effect. Invented to bring more people to cinemas in the '50s for 'Cinemascope!' They make the image look more cinematic, fantastic and captures sweet lens flares. Smart choice for a reality based slasher like Scream that is ironically also ABOUT movies, so we're watching it through the movieminded killer's view of reality. The other option is spherical lenses, which gives a more intimate, drama suited non-flashy image.
I love that you noticed how odd both Stu and Billy were in that scene with Randy in the video store. A lot of people don’t notice the vibe between Stu and Billy in that moment and not they were fucking with him
The great thing about Scream was it was so self aware, in that it even though it is a serious subject it constantly refers to old Horror films tropes, and makes reference to the plot of them etc. It also spawned superb sequels, each on of them is great too and well worth a watch. You gotta do the sequels, the writing is just so clever. Wes Craven killing off the most famous person in the film in the first few minutes. An incredible amount of such famous female actors in all the Scream films just too many to mention. It's a who's who of future Hollywood talent. Everyone gets the Freddy Kruger reference with the janitor outside the Principal's office ( or should I say The Fonz ), but not many seems to notice the cameo by Linda Blair, yes her of one of the most famous horror films ever in The Exorcist, as the obnoxious reporter in a brief cameo role early in this film. Great work by Wes Craven to drop her randomly in like that.
Drew berrymore has been a big name since she was in poltergeist as a child. This was actually Drew's idea to promote her as the main character and final girl with her face on all of the posters etc. And then kill her off in the first scene. She was actually supposed to be Sydney's character but opted not to when they came up with the plan
This was really fun. You guys made me laugh. You were the perfect audience, guessing someone might be the killer right before they get killed. The movie is very well done for that. We all have our favourites and you'll get different rankings from everyone, so i hope you do get a chance to continue and enjoy this wild ride. Wes Craven directs part 1-4, and then sadly died but the directors of part 5 and 6 do a great job of keeping the same tone. Enjoy!
Fun fact: Tatum in filming her scene in the garage, she actually improvised and in the original takes she did actually fit through the pet door but then they changex to her getting stuck and dying
A few fun facts: 1. Kevin Williamson, the scriptwriter, confirmed that Stu was the one who killed Casey in the opening. 2. When Stu brings him out to Sidney, Neil Prescott is wearing the same clothes he was wearing early in the film. This means that Billy only talked to Sidney to distract her from Stu kidnapping her father. He even plays music so Sidney won’t hear the struggle.
Love you re watching this now after all our comments on the last one :D have fun! Btw Rose McGowan actually fitted thru the Catflap but was told to get stuck
100% sure someone has already said it but I'm going to say it anyway: Rose McGowan fit through that pet door. They had a staple her ass in to make sure it looks like she couldn't. So, if that was real life, it wasn't a stupid decision and you [kind of] owe that character an apology. 😂
Y'all were laughing at Tatum from trying to escape through the cat flap, but the actress actually COULD fit through it and they had to staple her shirt to it or something to make it look like she was stuck lol
Drew was a big name since she was a child. Rose actually could slide straight through the cat door. They stapled her shirt to the door to make it look like she couldn't.
Of COURSE we didn't mind watching you speculate! That's the fun part, at least at first! I love this movie so much, and if I hadn't had the same process of wondering who and how, I probably never would have as been impressed as I was the first time. I love how you guys always just get the full experience of every movie, you never get too above-it all, you get that watching a movie is... for... watching haha. Keep up the good work, gentleman. 👍
People have probably commented about this already, but the fact that Drew Barrymore's character was killed off at the beginning was a shocking twist when this movie was released in 1996. Drew was already a well-known name back then, and she was displayed at the front of the character line-up on this film's promo movie posters, leading people to believe that she was going to be the main protagonist throughout the entire story (just as you two thought at the beginning). I think I remember reading somewhere that the writers of the film killed her off from the get-go as a way to tell viewers that this movie was going to be unpredictable and break the rules of the horror tropes that had been established up until that time. And that's what the SCREAM films aim to do (some more successfully than others)
I love this franchise, and Scary Movie spoof is absolutely perfect as well. Glad they're both back, let the hilarious shenanigans begin! Would be awesome to do a Scary Movie reaction too.
I feel very lucky that I wasn't spoiled either because there are a lot of quotes or tropes from famous horror movies that get circulated openly in popculture. I feel like it's the genre people feel most comfortable openly spoiling, no idea why. But going in blind is a lot of fun, especially in this movie.
The boys are correct at the time of the filming/ when the movie came out Drew Barrymore was a big name ( the biggest in the cast ) Courtney Cox was big but season 2 ish of friends and had not reached the level she would but, Drew originally got the role of Sydney, but then begged everybody to let her play Caycee instead figuring that the audiences would see her an rightly figure she was safe then after the first 15 minutes they’d be like “ ok so no one is safe “ 👏🏼👏🏼
not being spoiled on this is such a gift!! hope yall loved it

Her being a big name was the point, nobody thought she'd die
They also marketed her in the middle of the poster

100% sure someone has already said it but I'm going to say it anyway: Rose McGowan fit through that pet door. They had a staple her ass in to make sure it looks like she couldn't. So, if that was real life, it wasn't a stupid decision and you [kind of] owe that character an apology. 😂
Y'all were laughing at Tatum from trying to escape through the cat flap, but the actress actually COULD fit through it and they had to staple her shirt to it or something to make it look like she was stuck lol
would love to see your guys reaction to the rest of the franchise !!! super fun to watch you guys talk through all your theories haha
omg PLEASE do the whole franchise!
i really like how much you seem to enjoy doing these reactions. Please never stop
flying like a kite and loving this reaction so far. great cuts and u guys are fun to watch
One of my favorites. Glad you guys enjoyed it!
Drew was a big name since she was a child. Rose actually could slide straight through the cat door. They stapled her shirt to the door to make it look like she couldn't.
Much love to Jack for sticking up for the main girl. I love how he always calls out the shitty boyfriends in these flicks!
y'all are just delightful 😊 love this channel
I love this reaction you guys!
Love the scream franchise from start to finish hope you react to all of them, great reaction video thankyou it was fantastic.
I love this franchise, and Scary Movie spoof is absolutely perfect as well.
Glad they're both back, let the hilarious shenanigans begin!
Would be awesome to do a Scary Movie reaction too.
"The fucking popcorn! It's on fire Dan!"😂 you guys make any movie more enjoyable😅
Y'all are So much fun to watch!! Think I've said it before but goodness always look forward to your reactions!!
Drew was actually cast as sidney but she said she would only be in the movie if she was the first kill as the audience wouldn't expect it
Im always glad that this came out in the year I was born
