    And don't forget to breathe.
One of the things that I used to notice myself doing when I was a beginner was focusing so much on my hands that I would hold my breath. If you hold your breath the lack of oxygen will cause fatigue in your arms and your brain. When you breathe your body relaxes and you gain endurance in your muscles which helps develop muscle memory.

5:40 'Make Effort, Always make effort' (as we are being taught to RELAX our fingers). I love this. So many students tense up when trying harder. I always say, you need to try harder, which actually means relaxing parts of your playing mechanisms. Thank you for these great lessons. Very beautiful.

    • @DRDINOMEOW
      @DRDINOMEOW 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@Matt Spencer depending on the song or tones your looking for.. finger noise is bad for recording and just live performances. I have heard many people I try to teach say they can’t stand an acoustic because the screeching sounds. So it’s also a plus for the listener.
A good example of finger noise and proper use would be “ain’t no sunshine” by black label society. Listen to the way he uses the finger noise by sliding up and down the frets!

There you go, something no other teacher stresses enough! Look at how precise and 'on the fret' his fingers are. That's one of the 'no finger noise' secrets. You gotta stay as close to the fret as possible. The more you are 'between frets' the more finger noise you'll get. Tomo's precision on that is amazing! Domo-Domo, Sensei!

You're very kind! So nice to hear that! It's very hard to be good at both sides evenly. Once people argued about this "You cannot teach well if you are a great player!" I been doing this 2 weeks now, every morning .
    Already I have super results.
I have never done exercises, I figured that playing a bunch is all I needed to do.
    Well, I had a weak 3rd finger .
This exercise has made that finger way way stronger.
My accuracy reading and confidence in my fingers has dramatically increased.
I was reading "Ceora" this morning , definitely a tune where you need 4 good fingers on the left fretting hand.

Thanks for posting this. I played professionally my whole life and 2 years ago I caught the tip of my index finger in a table saw cutting the nerve but the finger tip was spared, more so the finger tip pad that presses down got cut and grazed the bone
So after 2 years I can finally press down now though if I hit the cut over the bone it can really create a sharp pain and burning feeling . So I am learning to avoid that area best I can.
Anyway after 40 years of playing you really dont lose all you knew. But these scale runs help me build the weakness back the two years of not playing has caused.. I look forward to practicing to you viideos, these a nice structured videos. Thanks

Your story is similar to mine in many ways. 40 years playing .. I ran a skilsaw through my left hand years ago . My first thought " My fretting hand!!!" Oh no .. fortunately the surgeon was able to reattach my index . The saw mowed off my thumbprint completely and dug in a middle finger a little .. 12 years before that I fell headfirst toward the floor and snapped my left hand . Stretched the tendons and spent 8 months in hand therapy learning to pick up pegs individually . Then in 2019 my right thumbnail was suspiciously degrading black and devouring my thumb . . For close to a year my warmup was first bandaging my thumb . Sometimes bandaging it lightly so I could try to fight through the pain and play .. That ended up muting the strings with blood running down the guitar and smothering the strings .. I was heart broke .. eventually went back to my friend hand surgeon . He looked at my thumb and looked at me " How long has this been going on ?" I told him a year . . Told me he has never seen anything like it that bad .. Told me it looks like melanoma .. Sure enough .. malignant melanoma . Told me my thumb has got to go and a coordinated surgery to my lymph nodes to see if the cancer spread .. It spread .. To my brain and is stage 4 .. My heart dropped even further . I tried to use a pick but it kept spinning out of my fingers until my middle finger got used to holding the pick and the geometry of pick attack . For 3 month I gave up playing . Until I fought through the fumbling . My fingers on my left hand felt like they were in molasses and concentrating on coordination . Made me forget scales . Always knew that limbering up and running chromatic sequences generally break the ice and now I wasn't concentrating on the fumbling and it came back " Somewhat " . When I get down and no matter the pain and tears .. I run the patterns to loosen up .. and surprisingly .. In pain , heartbreak and tears . The heart surges and out comes some of the most amazing music .. My father told me in 1979 when I begged for a guitar " You'll give it up in a week " 40 years later .. I haven't and never will

This octave-jump exercise is definitely insane.
Exactly what I needed in order to memorize the notes on the fretboard, where I tend to go for intervals more than shapes (you know, music more than muscular memory)... But that was harder without looking for the note name 2 seconds and then be lost.
Thank you sir, now I can learn my notes and intervals in a funny way, nearly 10 years after beginning guitar!
PS: I've been practicing these kind of chromatic lines for a year, sometimes hours a day, and it more than doubled my speed AND musicality (even if it's not important in black metal...). Please consider having this kind of daily routine and you'll really make progress soon. Posture, thumb positioning, playing the nearest from the fretboard, warm-ups, non-musical exercises then arpeggios, chords and keys. Be patient, persist and "don't compare to others"

Simple exercises like this, simple practice, even a little every day will help very much
...it's like putting money in the bank, if you put in even a little bit consistently, over time it adds up a great deal
I'm 65 and wish I had done some of these things earlier in life and have played guitar since I was 15
chords and some finger picking I have done well for many years, but with a pick only strumming well, not leads
in the last year I took the advice of Steve Stine for one very important exercise
      - a daily 3 minute flat picking exercise that strengthens holding and confidence with a pick
...where as before I could play alternate baselines I would always pluck with the thumb because I had no confidence picking out notes with a pick, now even at my age I am surprised how quickly I have improved with a pick
What Tomo teaches is very important - it teaches both hands and it teaches the ears as well
      Thank you so much Tomo
