I love Tomo! But in real life i'm a guitar teacher (Learned the old school style before internet) and some times there's a new generation of guys who needs over explanation and tabs for absolutely everything, it seems like a generational way of this era of super information, most of the things i learned was from the records and from fellow musicians who play with me over the years, maybe i tried several years to explain in a detailed way something i could play without thinking long time ago. When i became a teacher kind of wrap a lot of knowledge myself on what i was doing. Glad you can apreciate this way of teach and this is the most voted coment too!! I think that i was starting to stay alone in this idea.

So what I found to be the "5 Tips" from this vid were:
-Make a more patient decision on what to play. (Don't just play B minor pentatonic scale, play B minor pentatonic SOUND)
-Play your instrument with respect. No need to play it HARD and loud all of the time. Spice tastes better when mixed with other things!
-Shapes should be known. Try to locate multiple voicings and locations of triads, for example. Then your playing is easily more about notes than scales.
-What are you thinking?! Think about things that can distract you while you can still play. Food is a great thing to think about! (Side note: I think its always fun to associate flavors with sounds we can make, so try to cook up some riffs!)
-? Try to repeat licks over chord progressions. Applying similar shapes to the progression will add familiarity of the same movements, but variance because of the shape moving through the scale.

Yes and a good way to know where to go and what is possible on chord progressions, before going creative with solo is also to see the connections between the chords, this make the difference, and a way to practice it is to endlessly arpeggiate the chord progression and try to spot where it resolves with one or two steps between a triad note and the next chord triad

I've been "playing" for many years but only started learning how to really play about a year ago. Never learned any scales or theory until recently. I wish I had taken lessons as a young man. I'd be so much further along.

You are the first person I've heard suggest not visualizing pentatonic shape, but hearing pentatonic sound. It's so refreshing to hear it suggested sonically instead of visually. There's absolutely nothing wrong with visual referral when you're just beginning, but there comes a point where you have to start trusting your ears and allow them to lead you outside of your comfort zone. It's okay to make mistakes along the way. Mistakes bring growth.

    • @TomoFujitaMusic
      @TomoFujitaMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @woofcity6307

I wish there was a major school of guitar instruction that didn’t involve playing across all six strings in these visualizations at all but I think it’s our society where people want quick results and they want a system and when you do that people thinking gets very rigid and they’re stuck in the system. I’m actually glad I learned how to play guitar guitar before the Internet! All we had was cassette tapes and frustration! But you couldn’t just get tabs for everything

Triads are it. Just cant go wrong. Any underlying chord tone works, And the diminished arpeggios get you moving up and down the neck linking to another voicing position or idea as well as ad an element of harmonic sophistication to the tune (particularly against the minor which is already a "bit diminished" :)
Tomo this lesson is juicy breakthrough territory. Well done.

This is a real guitar teacher. Rather than launching into an amazing solo in order to show off and intimidate his audience, Tomo puts himself in the students shoes and shows it like it is in real life when you practice. I've learned more in 5 minutes here than in the previous 100 hours from other so called teachers. And not only is this a valuable lesson, Tomo actually goes through all the chords of the piece. I hate it when a lesson shows you what to do with one or two chords and then leaves you hanging. Thanks Tomo 😊👍

I always try to play a 'sound' . It can be 2 notes or 6 notes, because 1 note more or less gives you another sound quality. It actually comes down on playing what you feel and that could be in an academic way. I think that the notes that you play or composition you make are choices that are influenced by how you feel in a particular moment because when you improvise you 'are' mostly in the moment

    Tomo,
I have seen this video one year ago and again today and it makes more sense now. I used to stress out about playing the chord changes thinking I had to know every triad and map it out to play it. While this isn't untrue, it's also not the complete answer. Now when I am put on the spot I play the chord changes by 'changing directions' melodically with each chord change. Even if it's not the exact triad, if I play just *one* note from the triad/ chord and work around there with other notes it goes smoothly.
    Thank you for this!

Great lesson. Sometimes I get tired of my own playing style. Because I learned by myself and I've never made such an effort to understand what I was actually doing, as a result, creating this limitation wall that prevents me from expanding my musical abilities. Although I believe that listening is one of the most important aspect of learning/studying an instrument, and because knowledge is different than understanding, the theory is the key that might open doors to the other side, thus expanding musically. Thanks again for this great lesson.

This is something I know as a sax player, turned guitarist. I guess every instrument has its own hang ups.
To me it’s about slowing down. You don’t need to impress the audience. You need to entertain them. Entertainment is your industry and job, not impressing other musicians with your mad skills.
You totally nailed how a horn player thinks, and the fact that on guitar or piano or other rhythm instrument, it’s not necessary to constantly calculate in your head.
So you are not saying watching TH-cam, drinking whiskey, and playing guitar at the same time is a bad thing. Because I am totally doing that right now. I’m basically film scoring the news with the Blues.

Tomo-san, I love watching these videos and am both happy and sad to have found you so late. On the one hand I have A LOT of material I can start going through, on the other, I feel like I needed all of this 2 years ago! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Don't forget plenty of rest between the licks. Those notes need oxygen to breathe. Gary Moore, lightning fast but those pauses, oh the sweetness!

Fantastic. I know all my scales but my phrasing and soloing are terrible. Triads bring the music and simplicity to the table. Thank you. I was about to take up the keyboard

Great guitar playing at the intro. I have not seen the video yet, but just by the title alone, it is a thumbs up. I understand exactly what he saying without him having to say anything.
