  • Marty Rathbun explains how Scientology leader David Miscavige micro-managed the film adaptation of L. Ron Hubbard's sci-fi book and then threw John Travolta under the bus when it was deemed one of the biggest disasters in Hollywood history.

Bizarre update: I recently acquired (and read) a copy of Hubbard's Battlefield Earth, the book. It's a 1000 page behemoth. I was really surprised; it's actually a fantastic post-apocalyptic sci-fi masterwork. It's a great story. The movie was awful but surprisingly the book is wonderful.

After I went w/ OSA to a "Top secret Party". We were outside to make sure "All was Ok". John Travolta walked up, gave me a big hug and said: "I'll never forget you and Vicki" So after that, I decided to slip in. Got drinks and brought them to OSA congratulating them on their "Top Security". LOL!

I was around when the book was first published Hubbard sent out a tape recorded Ron's Journal #38 to all Scientology Organizations about the book and other things. In the recording he state the book would come out in a TV mini series. It surprises me that Marty doesn't mention that part. Putting it out as a movie was just being plain Hollywood-Daffy. The format used with Battlestar Galactica mini series would've been perfect.

Marty Rathbun was the focus of an excellent documentary on Scientology that aired on Channel 4 last night here in the UK. It focused on his history in the church, the circumstances surrounding his departure and the harassment he endured when the Squirrel Busters parked outside of his old home. It also included an interview with Tony Ortega and a brief guest appearance by Tory in some stock footage.
It's on the 4oD website. Not sure if non-UK folk can watch it though.

It was a fair to average Sci Fi. It was just the target de jour for the haters and critiques who don't like anyone to get to big for their britches. There were some nice special effects. Not being a Sci Fi fan myself, I'm not the best judge but it held my interest enough. However, the book was fantastic! A page turner for the story telling, and remember I don't care for Sci Fi. Don't miss the book. And it's safe for kids. No F bombs, no, um, intimate stuff.

About 2:20... I watched Battlefield Earth again recently and thought the special effects were quite good actually. Could even hold up today. It was good blend of computer and practical effects with the exception of some brief bad blue screen moments.. There was also a lot of attention to detail and care when it came to the prosthetic and make up. Unfortunately the tilted camera work, writing, directing and overacting tainted that.

"Battlefield Earth" is entertaining. Doesn't make me want to become a Hubbard acolyte. It's a pretty good Sci Fi story, and a decent film adaptation. In fiction, especially Sci Fi & Fantasy, improbable things happen. That's why people read the books and watch the films.
If one can get past the hysteria, there's a positive moral & social theme that's not the property of Hubbard or Scientology - the idea that Humans have innate abilities to: reason, define right & wrong, and cooperate.

Just for the record.....I kinda like Battlefield Earth.....Man-Animal..."Do you want LUNCH?" It's also super ironic that the Psclos are basically the modern COS...gotta get that leverage.

Robert Moor The Psychlos live up to their name. They represent the psychopathic side of humanity quite nicely, and that applies to both the film and the novel.

It's so incredible, when one hears these stories, one wonders how Cruise and Travolta could just be played like that - how could they not know or understand what is happening?
How can they just go along with all this?
Seems like one could rephrase a quote from Star Wars: "The con is very strong with these ones". :/

I agree that the book could have been made into a good movie. Boring, bloated, preachy books are made into great movies all the time. Hell, I've never met a single person who read the series of books that became The Godfather, and the few critical reviews I've read of it call it one of the most ridiculously padded series of novels in existence, boring, boring, boring. But the movies were groundbreaking.. why? Simple, they had a great screenplay writer, and little executive meddling.

I do wonder if it could have been better had the film makers were left to get on with it. But then we are talking about a Hubbard book here.

  • @r107roadster
    @r107roadster 11 ปีที่แล้ว

The fact that the whole Hubbard story from Battlefield Earth was a dodgy rip off from the earlier John Christopher novel The Tripod Trilogy has also forgotten.

Yup, Davey...when someone does something you don't like, he or she MUST be an SP, right? This movie was utter shit, and the fact that Davey thought it was good (and the best thing that ever happened to Scientology in two decades) speaks volumes. By the way, I highly recommend checking out the Nostalgia Critic's review of this film...you can find it at thatguywiththeglasses, or here on this site, easily enough.
