This movie remains the greatest unintentional comedy masterpiece ever made. The scene in which cavemen learn and master piloting harrier jump jets in an hour using a simulator which couldn't possibly have any power after a thousand years of laying stagnant causes me to evacuate my bowels with joy every time see it.

The reason this movie is *so* bad is because while it's adapting an L. Ron Hubbard book, it was not produced by the Church of Scientology. This was Travolta's pet project. Every line, every Dutch angle is because John's not a writer or a filmmaker. His plan was to play the protagonist (whose name is Jonny Goodboy because L. Ron Hubbard was a hack writer) but by the time he managed to put this thing together, he was too old for the part. And it was designed as a two-part film series so that's why it takes its time introducing motives and protagonists...But the production company was sued for fraud. Also nobody wanted to see a part two.

Roger Christian, the director, was production designer on the first Star Wars and Alien (winning an Academy Award for the former and getting a nomination for the latter). He was also second-unit director on Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace. Production Designer Patrik Tatopoulos worked on a bunch of high-profile movies, including Independence Day. Composer Elia Cmiral scored John Frankenheimer's Ronin two years earlier. There are several very talented Actors in this. And I read the book, it *was* possible to make a decent adaptation...
So yeah, I really enjoy watching this flick but only with the right "What the fuck were they smoking?"-mindset.

I've just saw it yesterday (with Czech dubbing) and I would say yes, it is nonsense, nothing really makes sense in this movie, but it's not as bad as people are saying, I saw much worse movies. You can't take it seriously, if you watch it like commedy, then it works somehow. :-D But as someone said, you can't make good movie from bad book. The worst thing about whole movie story is that nonsense with cavemen in fighters and operating nuclear bombs, that's really nonsense. This movie could be legendary (well, it is somehow) if they did some things better. Camera is not the biggest problem even when it's really annoying, the biggest problem for me is story, it just doesn't make any sense.

The movie was a travesty, the book was better. I read it before I knew Scientology existed. In the book the aliens invaded by poisoning the atmosphere, killing most people instantly. That's why military equipment and other stuff was stuff is basically untouched.
Poor scripting and direction killed the movie. Unfortunately Scientology then this movie killed any chance for Hubbard to be taken seriously as a writer. I would have loved to see his Mission Earth decology put to film. Then after this movie. I thought no, never make it a movie series, please.

It's an expansion upon his Scientology belief and he just went with it... The story is OK, but the presentation just doesn't grab you and take you into this world, there's no world building to bridge to it... That's why this failed, not many just dived into it and went with the story, the beginning was just too jarring...
This is what happens when a vanity film is made and even the ones making it don't understand or share the vision of what it's going to be... He no doubt tried to explain what he wanted, and he got what he wanted but nobody bothered to join it all together or give it a bit of life and purpose, it's just a series of disjointed scenes that probably make sense to Travolta, but everyone else just did what they were told not understanding what it was all about...
