    I stumbled onto this channel a few days ago and watched all the videos, pretty happy this exists, I feel like NES games that aren't your typical first party Nintendo games and critical darlings get enough unbiased coverage.

    This is quite impressive to see running on the NES! I feel like the console really got some showpieces in the 90s, and I always kinda liked seeing a game hit both the SNES and NES.
    Also, hopefully PoP can make a proper come back one day... maybe when the rights are owned by someone besides Ubisoft

    Man, if I had known about your tip at the end I wouldn't have spent that much time platforming with Mario! We could have just waited it out and raised the inevitable love child of Bowser and Peach together.

    The NES one was surprisingly good,i remember around 2000 i bought it and the sega cd version too and genesis. The snes i got the first week it came out cause i was a fan of the pc version when my buddy showed it to me on his pc. The sega cd version had that cool ending with the blood but the snes was the best one cause of the exclusive levels that made it a longer game. O yea i forgot i had the turbo duo cd version as well and had the best music. Hopefully that new one coming out jan 18 is good and the remaster of sand of time also.

    I love Prince of Persia. I originally played it as a kid on the old school pcs, then played the SNES version. i picked up the Genesis version recently, but have never played that version or the NES one. Pretty cool that they were able to get it on the NES back in the day. Awesome review once again!

    I've seen the SNES version around here and there and I've heard of the Genesis version as well as the NES one but had no idea there was a Gameboy version. Not surprised, but never knew. Thanks for the great video, NES Friend!

    It’s an impressive look for an NES game back in 89. Platforms that give a 3D look to them. And cinematic platforming at the time, on a console was just so rare. They didn’t really get much notice til next gen.

    I used to have this on NES. It was so frustrating to play as a kid! But there was always a joy to playing a game that was punishing with it's difficulty

    Great coverage! Although all it's pitfalls, this games strikes me as a marvel of what the NES can really do. Fun Fact: I have recently authored the latest Tool-Assisted Speedrun, and would you know it? This game can be solved in 15 minutes and there are a bunch of glitches that can be exploited for that.

    I actually think Moon Crystal might count as another cinematic platformer for the NES... well, the Famicom. It was Japan only but it's been English fan-patched for decades now, and frequently shows up on emulator consoles and whatnot. It's more fluid than most cinematic platformers in the POP/Another World vein, but still "overly animated" if that makes sense, and has more deliberately paced gameplay than other sidescrollers on the system - you should give it a shot sometime, see what you think. It's actually a pretty cool game!
    Another great review though! I remember being super excited to try Prince of Persia on the NES back when I was a kid - it was super cheap on the Funcoland price guide/newspaper sheet thing, and I looked it up and thought this version specifically looked so cool. I don't know why; it just has the kind of minimalist style that a modern lo-fi flat-shaded poly indie game would have nowadays. When we went to Funcoland that day though, they didn't have it, so I moved on. I never have played the original POP to this day... unless that XBLA remake counts with the Sands of Time assets (I don't count it; I think it feels too different. It has to, right?). Nice seeing it again and being reminded of it.

    The Famicom had at least one other cinematic platformer. It’s called Moon Crystal and it’s pretty cool. Too bad it never came to NES.

    Always glad to see more people talk about the pre-Sands Prince of Persia games. The original has a very, very special place in my heart as the DOS version is the first video game I ever saw. It was one of the few video games my dad played. There are a few things I wanted to mention though...
    First, the NES version is hands down one of the worst ports of PoP, if not the worst. Controls and physics and controls are way more jank. The swordfighting is horrible; you can't switch sides with enemies, push them off ledges, or even put away your sword and run like you can in any other version. They removed all the boss fights and the shadow Prince never re-appears at the final level. Your complaint about the potions also only applies to this version, as the vast majority of the others have the poison and health potions produce different colored bubbles, making them easily distinguishable.
    There are a metric ton of other complaints about this port. While it's a technical marvel they got this to run on the NES, and it probably introduced many people to the series, it is unfortunately horrible compared to the majority of ports and likely tainted many people's view on the old PoP games. I'd highly recommend anyone curious to look up "Stumbling through Prince of Persia" here on TH-cam, by DavidXNewton. He covers all the ports of this game and how they compare.
    One final thing; your comment that the SNES and NES versions being very similar is actually very inaccurate. The SNES version is actually the most radically different port of the game, to the point it's closer to a remake. It nearly doubles the number of levels (and the time limit), adds somewhere around 8 or so tile sets, nearly triples the number of bosses, has full, changing background music, introduces several new traps and potion types, and probably many other things. It's an absolutely fantastic game, and I'd recommend anyone that maybe feels burned by the NES version to give it a try.
    Sorry for the wall of text, it's just that the original PoP is such a special game to me and I want people to know that if they're not a fan of this version, that many of the others are much better. Again, I always love people talking about the Prince games before Sands of Time, as they've sadly gone mostly forgotten despite how influential they were.

    • @NESFriend
      @NESFriend  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. And I mean similar in concept in the most basic way possible. Not that they are the same game by any means. I should've been more clear. Thanks for the comment. Have a good day!

    The SNES version, the one I grew up with, isn't really the same as the others, since it has some exclusive levels, bringing the total to 20 (and the timer to 2 hours). I think it's an excellent version. As much as I like SNES Prince of Persia, I dislike Flashback, it's too slow and has overly complicated controls.

  • @Jason-fp7vi
    @Jason-fp7vi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd like to see another prince of Persia that focused solely on the platforming with minimal combat. I tried sands of time on my windows XP computer and kept getting frustrated by the half-baked combat being forced on you so often.
    A reimagining of the original concept in 3D on current hardware would be pretty darn cool. Although I imagine there isn't a market for it. "Mirrors Edge" for 360 and PS3 was a similar parkour game with minimal combat, but I believe it sold quite poorly despite the good reception. I enjoyed it a lot though!
    Thanks for the review king

    I feel like I would have loved PoP if I'd had it when I was younger and had more time and patience to learn it. But now I fear that ship has sailed. I'm just not as willing to devote so much time and energy into a game when I have so many other choices too. But it's still sort of on my gaming bucket list, so who knows? Maybe one day.

      @@TopSpot123 I second that, SDLpop is basically the original (still one of the best versions) that runs smooth on modern PC's, with many optional bells, whistles and customizations to make it accessible.
      Either that or the SNES version (which is a different, bigger and better game, but uses the same engine) is what you want to get into PoP 1, don't bother with the other versions.

    While still neat to look at, the NES version doesn't do anything special to separate itself from the many MANY ports of this game.
