    I've got to call you on the "Wizard and the Princess" comment, because that's incorrect in a couple of ways. This comes from Roberta Williams eventually using elements from the old game.
    Wizard and the Princess isn't "the first in the series" of King's Quest, except in some canon sense. It was part of the "Hi-Res Adventures" games and it plays like those games, which are like illustrated Zork-style text parser games. There's none of the point-and-click adventure style
    The one thing you have most significantly wrong is that the King's Quest games do not "all take place in Serenia". King's Quest I-IV take place in or around Daventry. It wasn't until this game, King's Quest V, that Princess and the Wizard was Retconned into being in the same universe as King's Quest when the character travels to Serenia, and this is the only game set in Serenia.
    If a new Metal Gear Solid game sent the character to fight Simon Belmont from Castlevania, and this was canon, would Castlevania be the first Metal Gear game? More directly, if Roberta Williams released a new Phantasmagoria set in Serenia, would King's Quest be a Phantasmagoria game?

      @@Hungrybillpizzabandit I don't think NES Friend was trying to have bad info, but it was wrong. I'm not trying to be rude to him. I think he's trying to do good work. The problems starts because Wikipedia lists "Wizard and the Princess" this way, and that's the extremely tiresome "Well, Actually" in the first place. It minimizes the importance of King's Quest for a game that actually didn't matter.
      TH-cam has a way of spreading incorrect info from video to video. You here a bad piece of info somewhere and it gets around like the plague despite being provably false (like "Megaman was a sales flop").
      This wasn't supposed to be a Comic Book Guy type point even though that's what I ended up getting across. It's not actually about the story inside the game. I honestly don't care much where it was set. It's just that the info in the video was wrong and that seemed like a quick way to prove the point.
      It doesn't matter what the canon is; it matters that King's Quest was made as a completely unique game in 1984. It matters because it wasn't created because Sierra had a good idea; it was created because IBM had a need for a PC Jr. game and an idea and paid for it to be made.
      King's Quest is the most important PC game made up to that point. It matters because it (eventually) changed what PC gaming was expected to be. It matters because it creates a completely new genre of adventure game that still exists to this day in one form or another.
      There's so much more to this story; "Wizard and the Princess" is the "Well, actually" to this story that shows up on Wikipedia or wherever else. "Wizard" is a random text parser game in a series of text parser games with images that Sierra was making. It shared themes with King's Quest. Really it's a footnote in history that no one would have cared about except if Williams hadn't reincorporated the story.
      At some point, I get tired of seeing history changed by the "Well, actually" guys who didn't know or weren't there and don't get the context. Then everybody else sees the same info and trying to make their own video end up spreading what they think is true.

    This one doesn't have an NES port, but if you liked the humor and world-building of King's Quest V, I absolutely recommend KQVI. It's one of the best and well worth a playthrough. Gorgeous world with lots of cool puzzles and really good voice acting. Tony Jay is in it!

    I grew up playing this game and it was my only King's Quest V experience until a few Christmases ago when I finally got around to the PC version. I have so much nostalgia for it, and I appreciated your showcase of a lot of the soundtrack here in your video.
    I'm glad you enjoyed your time with it overall. So many folks look down on this port because of the graphics, but it's more or less a 1:1 in terms of the content. Thank you for giving it a shot!

    I grew up playing Sierra adventure games on an IBM PC. I still find them charming if undeniably obsolete. The Black Cauldron is more familiar to me than the King’s Quest series, but I can appreciate Sierra’s commitment ;)

    The controls do take some getting used to and the game can feel clunky at times but you get used to it. They tried but you got to wonder why they chose the NES instead of the SNES for this one. Konami also published Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego for the NES so it's clear they wanted to bring the PC experience to consoles.

      Way more accessible than I thought as well. Have the manual handy and I don't think there's a ton of shame in consulting a guide here and there when you're stuck. The game was made in a day where they assumed you only had 2 other games to play and you'd spend enough time with this one to figure it out eventually. Ef that in 2023, have fun!

    Great review! Are there technical limitations or requirements to the save capabilities of the NES? Is there a reason passwords are so long? Could a password be just 4 characters and function just as well?

    • @NESFriend
      @NESFriend  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say because it saves you in an exact location with your specific inventory and has to know the order you've performed actions in, the password needs to be a little longer to account for all of those variables.

    • @goatbone
      @goatbone ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean?

    • @starlightwitch12
      @starlightwitch12 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to the creator of the Persistent Battery Saves patch, that this port of KQV has an SRAM in the cartridge, but the developers forgot that the cart has a SRAM battery slot which makes it work that the saves dont stay even in hard resets, so they made a procedure that clears out the SRAM after the reset which prevents save data corruption, that's why passwords are used for loading games in this port.

  • @goatbone
    @goatbone ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To me, growing up playing the PC version, the NES version looks like garbage. At least you don't have to discover how truly annoying Cedric's voice is.
