Yeah this was a great one. Hilarious that this was a Sid Meier game and I didn’t realize it until like 15 years after I played it despite loving Sid Meier.

There was a really good 1995 anime filme named Silent Service, about a US/Japanese nuclear submarine given the name Seabat but then renamed the Yamamoto after the crew becomes a soverign nation. It has a lot of parallels to The Hunt For Red October. The English dub is on TH-cam and well worth the watch.

This kind of thing isn't my jam,but I gotta respect a game with this kind of ambition on the ol' NES.
Also, I find it funny that a game called *Silent* Service has no music during gameplay

You couldn't control multiple submarines, and I don't think they had a machine gun. It was a full-size gun.

I'm surprised how popular this game was considering how niche and relatively complex it was. It must have sold incredibly well since when I started collecting games it felt like you couldn't throw a rock in a random direction without knocking over a gigant pile of Silent Service cartridges.

I traded my copy of Metroid for this game when I was a kid, no manual. What followed was months of trying to figure out how this game works, I don't think I ever understood but hell I tried, and somehow had some good times with it somehow? Damn, I even have fond memories!

  • @TheWarmotor

A couple thoughts - first off apologies for being a gun pedant but the deck gun is an auto cannon not a machine gun. I know most people won’t care about the distinction but even a ma deuce wouldn’t sink a ship.
Second, I played this when I was in middle school and got really good at it. Only got maybe 5 or 6 games a year back then so you didn’t just NOT play a game because it had detailed mechanics. I don’t remember using two controllers, I think I just kept the scope at 12 o’clock and used the rudder to look around, which made targeting torpedos more effective… but I could be mis-remembering.
Another great review otherwise, thanks again for the great content!

I saw a complete in box copy of this game at my local retro shop for $15 and bought it simply because it was the one game every kid I knew had in their collection because it was always in the bargain bin and made a great gift for a kid an adult knows loves that Nintendo.

By far one of the most common to find NES games not counting SMB/DH. In fact i've come across more cib copies than loose carts. Meaning most people who bought this game were probably adults who took care of their things.

Where would a guy go to sell his classic game collection? I have a dozen working systems ranging from NES to N64 to DC and PS2, and probably a couple hundred games. Nowadays I just play everything on my Retropie systems where I have access to entire libraries and they look great over hdmi, just got a closet full of the old stuff… it’d be nice to get rid of it all and pocket a grand or so.

    • @NESFriend

I could very well be interested in some of what you have. Otherwise you're looking at eBay or taking a loss by trading them into a retro store.

@@NESFriend That's kind of the problem I've been running into, I don't really want to spend the time to split everything up, haggle on the rarer stuff and be left with a remaining pile of hard to sell stuff. I'd like to slap a shipping address on these boxes and deposit a check and invest about 90 seconds into the whole ordeal. I suppose I'll just hold onto everything and hope the number of collectors continue to go up and the number of working carts and systems continue to go down... I only ever wanted to play the games and I don't need any of this old stuff to do that anymore :)

  • @Trusteft
    @Trusteft 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Some info is off. I assume the game is the same as in the one in the computers.
Convoy actions you do indeed control a single sub, but that is the case for every other option in the game. Convoy actions is what you would find in flight sims under single missions.
War Patrol you get to again control a single sub, not a group of subs. This time you patrol the pacific ocean, free to go where you want, and sink as many ships as you can, then return to one of the naval bases. It's basically the career option, the campaign option in flight sims. Nothing to do with controlling more than one sub.
You do not have unlimited ammo for your gun. As you can see in 03:32 on the top right, there is a number next to the gun showing the current ammo available. At least during normal play, I don't remember the training scenario if it has unlimited ammo. BTW, they are not machinegun bullets. It's not a machinegun. It's a deck gun used to destroy unarmed ships. Not bullets. :)
The rest of the info in that screen is very important in battle. The time of day affects the visibility, which affects how far you can spot the enemy and the other way, including torpedoes, periscope, etc. You can also see the water temperature to get an idea of the thermal layer which affects detection. The charge of the battery which affects if you have enough power while submerged, Also the depth below keel which is important for obvious reasons.
All that info is very important in battles.
I didn't know there was a NES version till few years ago. I was surprised. Some people on youtube mentioned it and they were all negative about this game, but they at the same time all sound like they don't know how to play at all, thus the game "sucks".
As I said I never played the NES version, only the Atari ST, PC, versions and the game is one of my favorite.
    Thanks for the video!

I just picked up this game from Half Price Books on a whim, so I think your comment here will be helpful, considering it was just the loose cart. I need to try and get the instruction manual, too. I think this game would be very worthwhile, if given the proper time and attention. I've never really been into simulations, being mainly a console gamer. I'm looking forward to putting some time into it!
