Our national anthem was firstly composed in Spanish because we were under Spanish rule for 333 years and second was in English during the Commonwealth era and 3rd is in Tagalog after the colonization of foreign nationalities. The best of course is the Tagalog/Filipino version because we're Filipinos and this is the act of being nationalistic. 🇵🇭

The original is Spanish not because we were under Spain. We were fighting a revolution against Spain. So why would freedom fighters sing the national anthem in Spanish? Because IT WAS THE COMMON DENOMINATOR. Do you think Tagalog was known to the other provinces? At that time, tagalog was just a dialect known only to tagalog-speaking regions. Would Ilocano revolutionaries understand it? Or Bisayans? Nope. But everyone understands Spanish. That's the reason. Everyone can relate. Remember, it was only during the 1930s when tagalog became the national language and was taught in schools that people started to learn and understand tagalog.
As for the 2nd version, the americans tried so hard to eradicate Spanish from the filipinos even to the extend of translating the hymono nacional into national anthem. And they succeded. Very few spanish speakers like me left.
3rd, when ultra nationalist felt ridiculous singing the national anthem in english during the 1950s, it was finally translated to tagalog. My late dad sang it in english till the day he died in 1998. To him, Lupang hinirang was just a fake song that catered to tagalogs only, and dad was a chavacano.

Eel Chiong Yes, you're right and what I've said is one of the reasons since during that time, we were under Spanish rule that's why the mostly spoken language is Spanish because we've been influenced. Tagalog is a Filipino dialect or like our national dialect like in China, Mandarin is their national dialect. Spanish is the common language spoken during that time.

i am a Filipino and love the Tagalog version more. I remember singing the Spanish version at my early years at school. Philippines got its name when Ferdinand Magellan, a Spanish Conquestadores discovered the Philippines in the 15th century and named the islands after King Philip of Spain at that time. Filipinas was the Spanish name given to the country and was ceded to Americans in 1898, hence the American version of the national hymn.

Thanks foŕ reacting. Yup, in all 3 official languages of the Philippines. The Tagalog version is more close to interpretation to the original Spanish and the English version is quite different. Actually, this was written originally as the battle march of the Magdalo faction (Marcha Magdalo) of the revolutionary army and the real first National Anthem was the earlier Marangal na Dalit ng Katipunan, commisained by Andres Bonifacio, the Father of the Revolution.

Our National Anthem the Lupang Hinirang has similarity from the La Marseilles of France (the Ending part of Lupang Hinirang:Aming Ligaya na pag May mang aapi Ang Mamatay ng dahil sayo) and Marcha Real of Spain from the start of the music (Bayang Magiliw Perlas ng Silanganan) hear the similarity on both the Anthems of Philippines and of the two Nations.
The Lupang Hinirang lyrics is first written in spanish Tierra Adorada later in 1960 changed to present lyrics and in 1990's approved as a Law.
The Music is first heard at the Philippine Declaration of Independence against Spain in Kawit Cavite, the hometown of our First President General Emilio Aguinaldo.

Being a Filipino and being able to comprehend all 3 languages, From an unbiased opinion, the Original Spanish Version and the Tagalog Version has to be the most patriotic. The Tagalog version is basically a translation of the Original, although it's not a completely faithful translation, some words must have been lost in translation.
