And a tip of the hat to the Boardman. Well deserved.

Love the use of the Wolf 359 ships. A real shame they were never used on DS9. My modest suggestion for a future production would be to alter them slightly. Maybe something as simple as removing the lower pod on the New Orleans, or replacing one of the Challenger's nacelles with a mission module of some kind, like a smaller version of the one on the Nebula class.

Great casting with ENS Keeley! I enjoyed every moment she's in.
Samuel's CGI/VFX and composites are outstanding as usual.
We're also experimenting with digital doubles, and they work best in very short segments with appropriate voiceovers.
    Excellent job, everyone!

A creative way to connect this tale to an existing episode.
Also, well done from a technical aspect.
In my long career I have met/worked with several eager beaver types that are still wet behind the ears and haven't yet realized that volunteering for additional work is always a bad idea.
At best, you get exhausted as tasks are piled on since they've found a sucker who will do the work. At worst, others in the unit will label you a brown-noser, which will hurt in the respect department.

This was a really nice episode, the only thing I would have changed is having a second cast member, it felt like the ensign was pointlessly telling herself everything she was doing/seeing.
That said, still really great work, as always, phenomenal work with the CGI/animation

    • @SGUDistantHope
      @SGUDistantHope  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks! So, at this point in Keeleys career there is no one in the cast also at DS9 with her so, unless we went out and cast someone brand new, brought in someone randomly and got a brand new uniform fitted for what would have been a few lines...it was not worth the extra budget given that this was meant to be a small and simple character focused piece.
Also, if you watch Keeleys films, there is a specific journey there. She starts off as a young officer who is so nervious she just...talks a lot... but as things happen at DS9 she changes and in the later films she has the confidence she needs and...does not talk to herself ha. It was an international choice to maintain this style based on her earliest film released " one small step"

An excellent addition to a story, I'm now going to watch that DS9 episode. :-) Particular standouts; the Enterprise D and other ships never looked better, deep space nine was extremely well done, the actress has a very natural flow and pleasing manner and voice, and she was well incorporated into the CG backgrounds (that many would assume were actual sets).
The music also was extraordinary and well integrated.
The full CGI effects of the people are in progress and very well done.
But I'm not a fan of the exaggerated theatrical aspect ratio since these were TV shows after all, and will not be shown on a on a film screen, so normal widescreen TV aspect would be great.
I would even suggest cropping it and showing both versions to people and getting their opinions.
I find the black bands just make the image smaller and are unnecessary for modern TVs.
Also the "camera float" can feel a little bit queasy, never was done on any of the Trek shows or movies, and if anything it attracts attention to the CGI/ artificiality aspect rather than letting those things blend in more seamlessly.
There could be a trope of having that only while in a small shuttle or something to indicate some movement but any shot on a station or a ship or in a room doesn't need to feel like a handheld camera, that feels like a step backwards from hiw Trek was always shot.
Overall an absolutely excellent addition to your catalogue, and I know you will continue to make impressive films and effects for us all to enjoy, greatly appreciated!

@@SGUDistantHope One of the best aspects of your short films are how they all expand the Star Trek universe in small ways. This is a great example of depicting the events of a particular episode but from a different perspective. It doesn't do too much, like ST: ENT's "These Are The Voyages..." did. I also like how you chose to depict the docked Defiant the way the show did... completely out-of-scale and thus preserving that show.

He was not. This short was from Keeleys perspective so there is a certain narrative flow that she was in her own head and so we didn't need to hears the other famous cast.
Using AI voices would be problematic for various reasons. You are also advice against using any material/clips or actor audio from existing Trek so i cannot go that route either.

You're looking at it through jaded eyes. Imagine if this actually opened up above your city only occasionally , filling half of the sky, you're telling me people wouldn't go outside to experience it?
People even now go out in the country to watch meteor showers, momentary streaks of light sometimes only every few minutes.
As a child we went out to look at the Hale-Bopp comet, stationary, but filled up half of the country sky and we were in awe.
There's something in humans that want and need to look at things that they can't explain, or that are unusual in nature and they want to experience it firsthand.
I'm sorry that beauty of this type has escaped your life..... So far.
