      I made friends in college by attending study groups, we would meet up either on campus or outside of campus like at a library or a coffee shop. That worked for me because I'm an introvert, but there was sonething to bond over and strike a convo like how example in lecture that day it was so confusing trying to understand the Krebs cycle or anything regarding the class you have.

    I need more of these videos xD I’m trying to make friends. I’m pretty shy and sometimes I get very impatient with all of this. I usually think that people don’t like me. I have many acquaintances mostly older people, they consider me as a friend but I still feel kinda sad about not having friend my age. I tend to feel more comfortable with guys but I sometimes end up having feelings for them and ruining the potential friendship. So every time I get more connected, I push the person away. People usually forget about my existence so when I actually see them again and go to say hi to them they don’t remember me . Help?!!🥺🥺🥺

    • @initialcreation
      @initialcreation 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I get this feeling. There's something about our self-esteem that keeps us from developing healthy and durable relationships. You need to first understand what to love YOURSELF for, think about why YOU would be a great person to be friends with. Spend time getting to know yourself first, understand which qualities about you should be nurtured and which gotten rid of. Grow into a person you want to be and you will feel confident enough to share yourself with other people. Just remember to give yourself time.

  • @jessylawless4690
    @jessylawless4690 5 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    I feel like past experiences play a major role in this. Like, if you have been bullied or not gotten the response you wanted it’s extremely off putting as your brain is trying to protect yourself from being hurt again emotionally. I think I could potentially be a very chatty person as I am with people I feel comfortable around but otherwise I’m like a closed book. I think it scares me that I don’t truly know what someone is thinking or how they will react. In the video she gives examples of what they would probably say back but you can’t guarantee they will be that nice or give the response you want and could give you a d**khead answer and make you even more introverted. Also your delivery has to be good as well, sometimes I say what I gunna say in my head first then it comes out as a big mess because of the adrenaline of social anxiety and putting sooo much emphasis on getting through a conversation and getting the response you want as you’ve convinced yourself it’s so important and if you mess up you’ll feel like an idiot who can’t get to know people. Sorry for the rant.

      Jessy Lawless lol late but also remember you don't have to get everyone's like or approval, if someone gives you a rude response or is closed off to conversing just leave the conversation. And just relax (easier said than done) but don't put too much pressure on exchanging pleasantries

    Most people tell me I’m great with conversation, it’s part of what I do for a living. However, I find myself mildly uncomfortable meeting new people and tend to overly make it all about them. I ask a lot of questions and latch on to the things I find that they’re interested in. It may seem like it’s going well, but I feel this is what prevents me from making solid connections with people. I don’t open up, but I manage to get others to do so. I’ve done this with “friendships” too, so much that I resent the other person for not knowing who I really am or “getting” me, when I was never really honest about myself from the start.

      M H Wow I feel exactly the same! I’m always so kind and try to make people feel comfortable by talking about themselves, but I find I never get the same attention. Since a couple of months I decided not to listen to anyone anymore, like why?

    You eluded to this in the video but didn't say it explicitly, which is asking open ended questions. I work in customer service and it really has taught me the importance of asking questions that start with how, why, tell me about, etc. That really opens people up and it gives you more to work with than a yes or no answer. Although sometimes starting with a closed-ended question is a good start for someone who may seem shy. Because once they respond with yes or no they may feel more comfortable to answer longer open ended questions. Awesome video! Sending hugs as always!

    my best tip: find the loneliest looking person in the room (or if that's you, find someone else who looks lonely) and go over and talk to them. they are likely new and want someone to talk to. Then, bring them around and introduce them to other people who may be just acquaintances to you. Also, I used to be a tour guide in college. You learn quickly how to read people, and tailor your talk or responses to questions based on their wants/needs.

    I just wanted to say thank you for this. I spent the years that I was trying to develop these traits I was in a highly abusive relationship for 5 years. Since then I went from outgoing to being shy and intervort never wanting to talk to others. I've wanted to develop this habit, my husband tries to help but talking is different then strangers.

    You are a class act and so wise. I would add don’t forget to make efforts in conversation within your own family/extended family. I have observed that people sometimes get lazy or self-absorbed and forget to make conversation with family members they don’t see often maybe thinking they know all about them. You family time is so much more enjoyable if you make the effort to converse and your family will feel closer.

    Your tips are always on time! I’m trying to learn the art of better conversation. I can be very introverted and get a little nervous when it’s time to talk to others or when I have to initiate conversation. Also I’m very blunt so I’m learning how to speak well, too.

    1. You have sth in common with EVERY human. (Food, work, life, clothes etc.) but also sth related to the context like asking another wedding guest: „and how do you know the bride?“
    2. The key is essentially trying to learn about the other person and REMEMBER the info!! Also try establishing a couple of commonalities
    3. Do sth while talking (reduces eye contact & takes off the pressure)
    4. Try facing the person from a slight angle instead of dead-on eye contact
    5. Show that you are a welcoming and attentive person. Some people like talking about themselves, but some are afraid to trust/bore you, so make sure you are welcoming and aren‘t grilling them with an ulterior motive in mind.
    TIP FROM ME: also it helps to greet them, and then start your question like this: tell them sth about yourself and then ask them what they think of xyz that you talked/asked about.
    Ok, on with Caitlin‘s tips:
    6. Practice practice practice. With various people and in various situation.
    7. Don‘t be nitpicky with your convo partner, everyone has sth valid to say!
    8. invite people around you to join the conversation.
    TIP FROM ME: open body language!!! Open the circle to let someone in!!
    Bonus tip: I heard this advice once, that when you feel really awkward or shy at a new setting/party etc., imagine you‘re the host. Friendly, genuinely happy everybody came, and now you‘re making meaningful connections with your guests, making sure they‘re feeling good, too. This tip has seriously never failed me, even when it‘s not a party, if it‘s at work gatherings/breaks- people there often just WAIT for someone to take out the pressure to be serious, stuffy and uptight. You can be respectful while making jokes and meaningful connections. It‘s desired even in those very challenging environments- often people around you are just waiting for someone who‘s brave enough to get a conversation going. And you can be that person.❤️❤️❤️❤️ all the love to you guys and girls!!

    @mrsmidwest I observe your outfit and make up applications A LOT. It looks so good, All of the time. How do you determine your make up look and the application. I never learned good tips about make up growing up from my mom, what compliments my face, my outfit, my tone, ect. I love looking at yours...it's never overdone. It's always subtle and complimentary, and it always brings out your natural beauty more. I'd love to learn your thoughts/knowledge on make up if your able/comfortable to share it💜
