    The key indicator to this problem is that everything lights up when you turn the key on except the gas gauge doesn't come up. Everything else does! So when it stalls, it's just like you turned the key off. You set there and turn the key on & off until when the dash lights up the gas gauge comes up, and then it starts. This was driving me crazy on my Ram 2500, and I was looking for a new truck when I found this video! It saved me the cost of a new truck for now. Bless you Cody for posting this.

    Possible Camshaft position sensor. Heat causes the element to expand causing a break in the circuit. Shrinks back when it cools down.

    My sister's Buick would start fine when it was about 35 degrees F outside. When it would get down to 25 F, she would have bright headlights, dashlights, dome etc., but no starter motor, or clicking, nada. So I wiggled all the relays in the box and it started fine. Had to do that a few times and now no issues. Feel like the cold contracted the metal just enough to no have a good contact plus a fine layer of dust/time. Just wiggle it, just a little bit.

    OMG. I wish I would have Googled this months ago. You just saved me so much grief. I'm sure this is what my problem is. Damn thing dies at the worst possible times, randomly, but always when hot and always when going slow (like waiting in line at the dump scales). I thought for sure it was that other relay screwed to the sheetmetal right in front of the breaker box you opened up. Thanks soooo much for this video. I owe you a six pack of your favorite beverage!

      I had the same problem with a 99 Dodge Ram Van 1500 with the small 6. I would drive and it would just stop. It was worse on hot days. I replaced all the relays to no avail. I purchased a used but low miles ECM and no more problems. Over heated computer is the problem. You described my exact problem. It would randomly shut down. Waiting in line or at a light. It was hell.

      I'm having the no-bus indicator on trip odometer, and diagnostic scanner says 'no link'........and gauges are dead...checked out all the relays inside and out...fuses too....Van had MCU changed a few years ago....hope I don't need another one.... Same vehicle 99 1500 with 3.9 engine...

    • @BaconNBeer
      @BaconNBeer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take the numbers off the ECM and get a low miles one like I did it is most likely it is burned out. Or try to find one at pick n pull.

      ...Thanks.....the Van has 220K miles....had a brand new MCU installed by Dodge Dealer in 2008, at 190K miles....Van is Driven very little and cared for well.....intermittent problem started 2 weeks ago....ran perfect before that.... Always the same problem, "no-bus"....I'm pretty good with electrical stuff....but with this new vehicle/computer stuff....need a high $$ Computer to troubleshoot it....all fuses and relays look good....even took the 'cases' off the relays and internals look and function like new....Junkyard MCU....no junkyards around here....and no transportation without the actual Van running....

      Anyone with a Chrysler/Dodge/Ram/Jeep etc from 1996 1997 1998 1999 etc with the jtec style computer (the same ones in the '98 Dodge Dakota), there is a simple solution to the random rough idle and stalling issues. Remove the left torx screw on the PCM computer, add two washers and then replace the screw. Can do the same with the other side, but do them one at a time. The screw seems to be just long enough to eventually ground out a component inside the computer and cause the engine to stall out. Didn't believe it myself, but when I pressed on the screw there in the front the engine died and backing the screw out fixed the issue. On warm days or once the engine was warmed up, the thermal expansion must have been just enough to momentarily ground the component.

    The auto shutdown relay I've replaced I replaced the computer and I'm still having the same problem once it cools down it'll crank and run and never shut off until you kill it and then it takes an hour or so to crank back up it's a 95 Dodge 3500 van trying to figure out the problem

    My 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3l el keeps shutting down when it warms up but starts up after cooling down we replaced the battery, (which is when the van started to do this) but also have replaced the EGR valve and the relays as well as the full pump and had the alternator inspected which is good 👍 but it keeps doing it could it be a camshaft or crankshaft sensor problem or what would cause it to do this

    My son has a Dodge B2500 that was doing the same thing. He changed a fuse & the fuel flow relay & it was starting fine. Went & changed the auto shut off relay but forgot to disconnect the battery. Now it is not turning over. Could this have caused an issue? He put the old relay in bit it is still not starting.

    Thanks so much for posting. My '99 Dodge Caravan does the same exact thing, starts right up when cold but as soon as it gets to operating temperature, it dies. One day on the highway, after several hot shut off and cool re-starts, it wouldn't even start anymore, after which my mechanic diagnosed a bad ECM, which I replaced, so now it at least starts, but the same "hot shut off, cool off restart" issue persists. I replaced the Auto Shut Off Relay, but it the issue persists. There is also an EATX Shut Off relay, could that be the culprit? Would appreciate your insight. Thanks again.

      +Timothy Bruneau - Did you ever figure it out? I found out a similar symptoms like yours and it was the " Ignition Control Module "... NOT the Coil, but the Module. When the Module gets HOT, it stop working because it's bad and it stop powering the Coil :((((. Try that first :D

      And actually since my original post, my mechanic says it's the trans torque converter shut-off solenoid (didn't know there was such a thing). He says the only way to fix it is a new trans. Go figure. I'll let you know after trying your Ignition Control Module fix.

    When mine cuts off I I found out if I put ice on the back of the computer it will start back immediately it took me forever to find out what was going on with this van I trace wires I jiggled connections. In the beginning of all of this I didn't know that it was the computer getting hot so while I was dealing wires and pulling fuses and looking at everything else it would have time to cool down I thought that I felt the problem by jiggling some wires under the seat but come to find out that wasn't what it was every time I thought I found a explanation for it the next time it would do it it wasn't that so finally one day I was checking the connections going to the computer and felt that the computer was very hot so for s**** and giggles I decided to put some ice on the computer well and behold it started as soon as I put the ice on the computer I still have the problem I haven't changed the computer out yet so I make sure I have a cup of ice in my van with me at all times yeah it's a little redneck but at least it'll get me off the side of the road
