Scotty Kilmer hello Scotty, hey I'm having some issues with my 05 mercury mariner it turns off when I put it in gear & check emissions & check engine light comes on. Itll work 4 a bit afyer i reset it but does it again after awhile... I already changed all spark plugs, computer, 3 oxygen sensors, had muffler work on it replaces flex pipe & some round piece of muffler part can't remember name it was clogged, it worked good 4 a day or 2 then again "check emissions " then it turns on fine, idles real smooth, then turn off as soon as I put it in gear?
Thoughts?

Great video as always Scotty! Just to share my little experience back in August. Same exact problem on my Corolla, car shuts down randomly and no trouble codes.After weeks of checking, I managed to isolate the problem to the fuel pump system. Later we found out the cause was a bad 12v wire to the fuel pump as it was stripped and corroded somewhere in the middle.

Yes, the more fuel in the tank, the more pressure feeds the pump. Odds are it's going out. My Ford explorer died yesterday on me.... I just had the fuel pump replaced a week ago and the coolant system. The check engine light was on afterwards but I assumed it was due to the code not being cleared since the work was just done and the light wasn't on prior to that. Love your content Scotty! I don't look stupid when I come to my mechanic.
Maf sensor has no effect on the fuel pump pressure. It can change fuel injector pulse width, but not fuel pressure

check the wiring going to that bulb, especially the ground wiring. If wires are bad or loose, bulb will get super hot and burn out. Also check for water intrusion on the bulb, if any water touches em, boom, they blow.
The bottom line is, you're better off with a simpler 1980s car that can still be fixed at home. Those dependant on garage services shall drain your bank account.

not necessarily, depending upon where the leak is. If an injector leaks into the engine, extra gas gets into the engine, making it run faster at idle.

I remember when the fuel pump in my 2000 maxima went bad. I was gonna pay my guy $600 to fix it, until I did a lil research and found out how easy it was to change out myself. Needless to say, I saved over $570 (the fuel pump without the filter was less than $30) and I learned a very valuable lesson from that entire experience

Six years later and Scotty is still the man
Scotty, my car is a 1996 Oldsmobile Ciera and it has just recently started to randomly die on me. Once it does though it fires right back up with no trouble and continues to drive on. The only factor that is the same is that the gas tank is between 1/4 and 1/2 a tank every time. Could it be a problem with the fuel pump not registering the fuel?
more often just a weak fuel pump itself, I'd change it out myself

could be tons of things, pressure test the pump, and pray it's that easy of a fix. PRAY it's not the transmission going out, those things eat em up
Scotty Kilmer I have a two door 2003 Chevy Blazer. Up until this year, it starting to have issues. The first time, it cut off while driving and I was able to crank it back up easily. I took it to a mechanic and was told it needed a tuneup. Did it and it drove fine.
Six months later my car failed to start in the morning. Had a side mechanic take a look at it and was told it needs a fuel pump. Bought one from AutoZone and he put one on. He failed to reconnect a hose so I took it at Pepboys and it fixed the problem.
Now my car cuts off while driving but only when I am not on the expressway. On the expressway it drives fine unless I slow down. I took it to a Chevy dealership. They could not find any reason my car shut off. The only codes that came up was a mass airflow censor and two O2 censors. Got both fixed at the dealership but two days later the car still cuts off while driving. The car still can easily restart the with no issues. The Chevy dealership checked the battery terminals and they were ok. They also told me the fuel pressure is good too. It continued to cut off only when I drove 40mph or less.
I then took it to a GMC dealership and they indicated that it shut off one time but could not recreate the car cutting off. They did not open/drop the gas tank nor did any eletrical checks but they "slightly moved the fuse box" and that may fixed the issue and to go back to them if it shuts off while driving again.
Any suggestions to what the issue may be???? I know the car is old.

@@teekay8134 the fuel pump. More of the wiring of the fuel pump. I learned if the wiring of the fuel pump is improperly done, the the fuel pump will stall out no matter how good the fuel pump is.
Take from me, if you have a need to have fuel pump installed along with wiring of the fuel pump, please take it to a licensed professional.
Check and clean the connection of the wire that goes to the bottom of the fuse box and you might be surprised

One, buy better quality rotors and pads, and if they still warp, your callipers must be sticking on (or, as I've seen in some drivers before, you may have a heavy brake foot, I've even seen guys drive with one foot on the gas and one on the brake when I analyze their problem with them driving.)

i have a 2000 monte carlo that shuts off while driving after 20mins..thw steering wheel tightens up and the battery light comes on..but it start up after it dies but for 5 mins then dies again..i just relpaces the 02 sensor but still have same code and problem...any suggestions??

My little mk2 escort did that and I found the rotor in the distributer was bad bit after I turned it the car started it happend 3 times as I was taking it to my place of work witch the job was car compliance so there was every tool at my disposal I managed to get it running nice with a new dizzy and after that it was onto body work 😁 Scotty you are a top notch mechanic I Am defiantly not saying you are wrong Im just explaining another way older cars have these problems and what it also could be keep the vids coming Scotty they are very helpful

Scotty is the man! I recently changed my 02 sensor and when driving to get my car inspected, the car would stall every time I was coming to a stop. It would stall and the steering wheel would lock up. This did not happen prior to me changing the 02 sensor. Is this a normal problem?

the idling is all electronic, probably a minor glitch. Live with it unless it occurs more frequently.
My car stops all of a sudden when driving last year they had put a new fuel pump it turns off when the air conditioner turns on what can I check for doesn’t show any codes

Hi. My car died . No way to start. I sprayed starter fluid in air intake no start, had a very week spark fire. Can be ignition coil?I was driving and just lost power and stop and I couldn't get it back to start. spart plug 3 of them very dark carbon built . But one of them is wet of gasoline and dark too.what can be?
Doesn't this sound more like a bad starter?
Yes, but then it would be totally consistent and not random. An electrical fuel pump can come and go, as it's electronics. A clogged fuel filter would always be bad.

My 07 Tahoe died on me on an intersection, I had to change the throttle body and the pedal sensor which is the whole pedal. Thank god for a 65$ dollar OBD from auto zone. love your videos Scotty

This has happened to me a few times over the years and it was usually a bad alternator or dead cell in the battery. Caused by a heavy electrical load (amps, subs, ect)
This is happening to me also when slowing down. And the Battery light is turning off and on. Its not the battery since it's brand new.
I started my truck and disconnected my battery and if it turns off it's the alternator. So I need a new one.
Same thing happening to me with my Toyota rava 4. Car will drive great but slowing down or turning it will kill out and fire right back up. Only started this after getting gas from a different station used fuel injector cleaner did fine over the weekend. Today it killed out 3 times
Paul 45 if you removed the battery, leave it idle for 20-30 mins with everything off specially the radio then another 10 mins with the a/c on

most times when these newer fuel injected cars die out when driving is due to a faulty or dirty idle air control valve, bad grounds and or loose/bad battery terminals. most pumps nowadays go for a longtime and honestly only ever had a fuel pump go bad was from not using it

hello Scotty, I drive an Isuzu/Holden Rodeo.. the rpms drop whenever I brake, to the extent that the engine will switch off. could you please guide me to diagnose this.

Scotty Kilmer my 06 ford taurus se would die at high speeds or while accelerating and i took it to the dealer and i found out it was a bad fuel pump and it would aslo randomley die at idle also
@vape waves :it sounds like your torque converter in your transmission is locking up. Does it idle fine when in park?

Thanks man, Today 7-1-2023. I had the same problem with a Hyndai Elantra 2012 model and thanks to this video I told the guy with the scanner to check the fuel pump and that was really the problem.
my car would shut off when i would try to make a complete stop. My 96 mazda would shake then cut off. Whats weird is if it give it a little gas before i do a complete stop before the rpm drop low my car wont shake or stall. sometimes if i put the car in neutral it who stall. Now all of a sudden my car wont accelerate but reveres fine. its like the car kicks in and goes then the rpms goo really high near the red zone area , when it does that i losen up the throttle to lower the rpm and it does not move, the car goes like 5mph, this happened before and i looked in the engine area and slammed the hood when i was down and the car was back to normal. there is no check engine light on now and no codes. but before all this happened every-time i would go past 45 the engine like would come on and the car seemed like it was lagging to get up to speed then the light comes off when im not driving highspeeds. P.S. My car didnt pass smog test so i had to do a few things they gave me a full tune up replaces all spark plugs and one h2 sensor. i couldn't do both. too expensive. and it passed after that. now all theses problems 3 months later and fluids are not low please help.... its a 96 mazda 626 es automatic.

Scotty, I have a 09 dodge charger police package it's a 5.7 hemi I've had it for a few months now and I never had this problem before 3 days ago I was making my way home from a frustrating day I'm driving down a main road everything was fine until my dashboard goes crazy lights turn off and on my gages go off then to the speed I'm going on but then it shuts off I'm afraid it culd be a short, the ecu culd be damaged or what could cause this problem, also a few months ago I had this problem were my gear indicator P,R,N,D would normally indicate whether I'm in park drive etc but it indicated that all gears were indicated like it would indicate that it's in park neutral reverse and drive were selected and didn't let me change my gears but car would start just fine I don't know if that is part of the problem or if its a different problem but it hasn't happened anymore if posible please get back at me thank you!😭
check the battery and alternator first, paces like auto zone load test both free. pray it's that easy

well I took the battery and the alternator to AutoZone everything checks out ok now my worries are if it an electrical problem since I discovered the battery n I've putt it back on with the alternator now it has no check engine light no more plus it hasn't died yet but I don't like the fact that what ever it was maybe a lose wire or anything like that that culd be it ?😭😭😭

I had this problem with my caravan. I know it's not a charger however it actually ended up being my body control module. Basically the computer for the inside of the car.

I have a 2007 dodge charger and my car cuts off on me when I'm trying to start it and sometimes when I stop... my fuel pressure is good and my fuel pump could it be the fuel pump relay O2 sensor and when I'm driving my car jerks when I'm pressing on the gas..... PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!
Its the gas tank call Chrysler give them your VIN and if your car has the Gas tank warranty on it then its free, if not then $1.3k to fix.
Don't listen to Nick J the Honda fanboy. My 99 Accord would randomly shut off many times at red lights.

Yeah, but a lot of the time that tool may cost the same or less than bringing it into the shop. Then if it happens again in the future you already have the tools.

I have a question, I have a Dodge magnum 06 V6 2.7L - Would you know what would cause my a/c to shut off and turn back on. Sometimes right away and other times it just stays off until I switch it off and back on again? All my gauges go crazy and all my lights on the instrument panel light up and then everything goes back to normal. No engine light no codes would the fuel pump play into this? I took it into the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong. Please help with anything you could possible answer, thanks!
