My experience with masking fluid has been bumpy. The two products l tried (including one of yours) eventually became lumpy. Some lower-quality paper may pull off in spots when the masking is removed, and it's *extremely* important to remember to remove it as soon as you've finished painting. I made a nice little piece that was ruined when l left the masking on too long in one small area, and it simply would not peel off in spite of all advice.
It's just WAY too expensive to use quite so lavishly, though your end result is beautiful.
I’m so sorry you’ve had frustrating experience. Unfortunately masking fluid does go lumpy if it’s old or not sealed tightly.
I’ve learned that the best results come from good quality masking fluid and high quality 100% cotton paper. I did this on Arches cold press paper. The sketchbook I painted in first does not handle masking fluid well. The paper rips when removing the masking fluid. Different paper brands have different sizing which I think affects the masking fluid. So it’s important to test it on your paper. With high quality paper I’ve never had issues with leaving the masking fluid on for days and it still removes cleanly.
The problem I’ve had with masking fluid-although I love❤ it and swear by it-is one must use a brush they don’t care about + the fluid dries so quickly on the brush during application. At least that’s the issues I’ve had. TYSM for this video!
I know. I use a cheap set of watercolor brushes, but I’ve been able to keep them in good condition for a couple of years. I share some helpful tips in the Masking Magic guide. In short, I dip my brush in soapy water (just a little dish soap) and then blot it mostly dry BEFORE dipping it in the masking fluid. I rinse the brush in soapy water often…every 2-3 times I reload the brush with masking fluid. That why no masking fluid has the chance to dry in the brush. Hope that helps.

I was so thrilled to see you set out two jars of water for a w/c session. So many people teaching w/c on YT only use one, which is both maddening and mind boggling. (I’ve been doing watercolor for nearly 40 years and have had the privilege of studying it with some of the best watercolorists in the country…)
But, what exactly is the point of your having two water jars if they’re both dirty?
One is supposed to stay clean for clean water to wet the paper, clean water for color mixing, clean water to start new colors…
The other ONE is for cleaning the brush
Otherwise, why bother at all with two? Makes no sense.
In this case, both jars are dirty because my turquoise blue paint is semi-opaque, so I used one jar for rinsing out that color. That’s why the blue water is so cloudy. I used the other jar to mix all the greens. I premixed all my colors and only needed clean water to wet the paper for the second painting. I guess my water jars are flexible.

It is fun to experiment with crayons and watercolor as well since the water resists the wax, there are endless possibilities. The best though, is the see the joy you refound in the artistic process through different methods.

I think that would be a great idea for a watercolor book! Maybe even as a kit; watercolor paper with the sketch already on it, masking fluid and a brush! Using easy, flowy designs!

If you want better control/precision out of your brush strokes, try some Raphael 803 Quill mop for washes and some Raphael 8408 Kolinsky for the rest! 803 No4 is on the big side, better suited for A4 size paper and up, however it still works fine on A5,because of the control it provides. The balance on those brushes and what they provide when painting, is second to none! (that's one reason, miniaturists, have Raphael as the BEST brushes, the Rolls Royce of the brush world!) I didn't expect all these before I tried them, because I only had good luck with German brands, like Da Vinci series 35 and Royal Talens Rembrandt Series 100. Raphael is a different animal. they instanyly became my go to, something that no other brush, has ever come close to!!

Just an FYI for other artists, generally professional artists advise against using masking fluid too much. Especially as a beginner. It doesn't do much to help you learn how to paint when you're taking shortcuts like that. A professional or higher level artist using it is different because they have finessed their craft so taking the shortcuts here and there aren't really a big deal but I've heard SO many other artists say NOT to rely too much on masking fluid. It should be used sparingly when needed. And yes, the Winsor and Newton masking fluid is much better than the Pebeo which is the blue one. The Pebeo can leave a blue stain and will sometimes damage the paper and you can't pull it off like the Winsor and Newton brand. I've also seen some artists add some paint to the Winsor and Newton one so that it does have color to it so you can see where you put it but it's pretty easy to see regardless.
it's pretty risky sometimes too as even if you do everything perfectly with it it will still tear some papers (without using heat to dry, not leaving it too long or too short of a time etc.).
Yes there are some papers that will tear no matter what! Legion Stonehenge is one of those brands! It’s a phenomenal paper for an affordable price but you can’t use any kind of tape or masking fluid without tearing or pulling a layer of paper up with it!

Wonderful video. ❤ could you tell me what size of dagger you are using. I have been looking for a small dagger and all I get are big ones ( not being able to ascertain the size off the shop listing ) 🙏🏽
I totally understand. The first one I bought was much bigger than I expected too. In this video I am using the 1/4” dagger from Princeton Neptune. There’s also an ID number on the side that says 4750DG-025. I hope that helps.

just don't do this on bee paper (even though it's cotton). It just does not like masking fluid and even if you let it fully dry (no hair dryer that would rip up most papers) and are super gentle it just pulls up way too many fibers.
You’re right. I painted the first version in my Bee Paper sketchbook. I switched to Arches when I decided to use masking fluid. I think it must be the sizing that makes a difference.
Does watercolor paper, e.g., Arches®️, allow for light to show through for tracing?
Yes. What you see here is Arches 140lb. Coldpress paper on the light pad. The light on the light pad is dimmable. When you turn it on, hold the button down until it’s the brightest light.

This is a beautiful and refreshing project in my favourite colour palette! I am curious though, would it not work to just paint the entire leaf shapes in water first, then drop your colours in while the paper is still wet? Do you still need the MF?
I'm less experienced than you though, and it may be that the wet-in-wet technique without MF is something you don't care for, but I thought it may diminish that horrid anxiety of finishing the entire piece before it all dries. 🥴
You could definitely paint with clear water first and drop in the color. That’s a great technique. But for the complexity of these shapes, I wasn’t confident they’d stay wet long enough. I think the clear water method is better for a loose, freehand composition, but it’s all a personal preference.

When I used the plastic square pickup the corners became very dark. How do I clean or cut off the edges?
That’s normal. You can pick off the masking fluid from the corners periodically while you work. I also pull off as much as I can at the end. The discoloration won’t affect the eraser. You can also use scissors to cut the eraser into smaller pieces or cut off stained corners.

How would it be cheating? She did the work. She designed it, filled in the negatives, everything. Nothing is a copy... It's a different method using a "tool" that allows her to paint "as usual" so what's the problem?
My only issue with it is extra (chemical) waste...but that's a tough thing to avoid in general when creating 🫤
I understand your concerns about waste. The amount of masking fluid I use for this type of application is far less than the “plastics” I would use for collage or acrylics. Less waster overall is one of the things I love about watercolor.
