I tried living on a tiny remote Scottish island for 7 days. Scotland has many islands, especially on its western coastline. Trying Scottish island living has been something which has been on my bucket list for years so I decided to finally make it happen!
Join me as I head to the tiny Isle of Muck, one of The Small Isles and spend 7 days of simple living in a cute cottage and experience Scottish island life....

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!
P.S. Some of the links in this description are affiliate links that I get a kickback from.
The 70-minute uncut version of this video, is available to watch over on my Patreon page: www.patreon.com/RuthAisling
Over on Patreon I will be sharing bonus videos, live streams and Q&A sessions.
You’ll also gain access to my regularly updated Scotland Google Map which includes 200+ pins of places I’ve personally visited and recommend in Scotland.
Plus, you’ll get sneak peeks into future projects (I usually film videos around 4-6 weeks before they are published on TH-cam) and behind-the-scenes photos and video clips!
I hope you enjoy this video today and let me know if you could survive a week living on a tiny Scottish island!
Hi Ruth. Can you give me the details of that Laptop stand please? I need one and the ones ive seen so far seem weak. Yours looks sturdy. Thank you. Rob.
If you're putting out a directors cut you should probably call it 'Never Mind The Bullocks'. Or something suitably cow-tastic. 😄
@@alzyerpal-TV😂😂
@@RDPprojecthi Rob I bought it on Amazon but a long time ago and don’t have the link anymore. If you have a browse on there you might find it or something similar.
@@ruthaisling Thank you so much for replying. A lot of youtubers never get back to questions in the comments section. Anyway....Let the hunt begin😄Ive already started looking. But im more of an eBayer than amazoner.... So i'll hop over to Az and have a scout. Once again...Thx mate.
A trick that I was taught when I worked on a farm as a teenager - always carry a stick when near cows. They think twice about charging you if you just wave the stick at them. It is useful to use a walking stick anyway beacause it can stop you falling over on slippy surfaces.
100% 👍
Good tip thanks!
@@ruthaisling If you forget to bring a stick, you could take your red jacket off and wave it in front of you, matador style and shout Ole as you sidestep the stupid thing.
( you don’t have to say Ole’)
Hi I just want to say your videos are like a window to the world for me who can't go out and explore the landscape by myself. I feel so comforted and grateful to be able to witness your experiences and feel like I'm right there with you. Your attention to detail really shine through in every video, making it an absolute pleasure to watch. Thank you for bringing the joy of exploration and adventure into my life. Keep doing what you're doing, you're beautiful and amazing
I really appreciate your lovely comments, thank you 🙏
Things we learn about Ruth:
The woolly hat is not actually permanently attached.
She's never come across a gas oven.
Hahaha 😂😂
I was actually thinking 'Ruth still has her hat on?' 😆
…was thinking the same thing!
I’ve never seen a gas oven in the US.
@@numanuma20 They are out there: my wife and I both grew up with gas ovens in different regions of the U.S.
That cottage is adorable! I would not be intimidated at all to stay there. So very peaceful. I hope you had a special, wonderful time!
I did! I’m so pleased I went there ❤️
Love your videos. As a Scotsman who's lived abroad since 1979 it's great to see my homeland through your eyes. The only downside is you increase my homesickness terribly. Keep up the good work. 😀
Oh no, glad you get to see Scotland through my videos though! 🏴
Have you ever returned for a visit since you left in '79?
I could live there permanently! This is exactly the lifestyle I love most!❤
Curry looks delicious. I have lived alone since 1976 and I love it. I would love the cottage except for having to carry all the food for the week!
As an introvert, you could give me that cottage any day and I would be in heaven! What a beautiful island, I can't wait to visit Scotland! Also, I love your sunglasses, they're super cute.
Thank you!!
Hope you enjoy your visit.
Totally agree!
Snap! ('em except I'm already in Scotland..)
11:07 Ruth, the reason why we have separate taps in the U.K. is mostly now tradition and we we are now shifting towards mixer taps finally. When I was a boy in the 70s we had a header tank usually either in the loft our above the hot water cylinder to give added pressure to the water as the hot tank was often upstairs in the property, without it, the hot water would trickle out very slowly because the cold water refill pipe would feed the tank very slowly.
With header tanks, they were usually open and would have maybe a sheet of wood on top to keep out any birds or other undesirables that got into the loft.
We were always told not to drink the water out of the hot tap as you might even end with the odd spider that had dropped in… yeuch… and so this is the main reason why we had 2 separate taps, one for drinking, the other for washing. With modern boilers, we use pumps to boost the water pressure and as they are sealed, the tanks give clean safe drinkable water (if you like drinking hot water from a tap 😵💫🥴)…
Sorry about the long explanation… my ADHD affords me the ability to not be concise and to the point … lol 😂
By the way, I love this video and look forward to following your journeys … safe journeys xxx
Thank you for the info!
Ruth your channel is so adorable when you post a episode. Thanks so much for sharing your story with us that watch your channel. Quite frankly it's impressive.

Loved the video! But, I would bash my head in that bed!
The cow was just protecting its baby
I love all your videos!
I know, but it freaked me out!!
@@ruthaisling I worried about that, Same thing as a giant dog coming.
I think it tried to give you a warning...just to scare you. 😬 As soon as you screamed "No", it quickly backed off.
If a cow is with young, stay away from the dung.. True 👍
@@andrewmaccallum2367 if a cow is with young cover yourself in dung (they think you are family;)
Yes.
I love living alone.
I WISH they would build some wooden structure to give the cattle ana wild life there some cover from the rain. If I was living there or visiting I would arrange to build a few strong sturdy wooden covers, large enough that 30 cows could rest under there from the rain.
WOW Ruth! You are a great food shopper; all that food for ONLY 80.00!! Amazing!
Your video is Soo interesting and fun!
I will look into visiting beautiful Scotland!! God bless
Thank you so much 🤗

I think I'm still staggered at the game-changing quality of the aerial video which is now possible, thanks to the automated drone Ruth mentioned in another video. Not just its compact size, but its controller-free programming, enables the filming of documentary-like sequences. I'm particularly impressed by the distance shots. To think that 20 years ago that would have taken a prohibitively expensive helicopter, and even 10 years ago a large cumbersome drone which you had to stay in controller range of. I wish I had had such a device when I explored the other-worldly landscapes of north-west Scotland around Durness, Tongue, and Kinlochbervie in 2013. Keep it up!
I wonder what is the currie your eating for breakfast. Doesn't look like fried eggs, bacon, grits, country ham, biscuits, redeye gravy & blueberry jam!
Yep I'm a subscriber- your vids are sleek, informative, no loud blaring music and just darn right fun to watch. Scot is on my bucket list. Hello from St. Louis, MO USA. Stay safe and keep on traveling. Cheers......
Thanks for subscribing in St. Louis!! Glad you’re enjoying the videos.
You brought a huge amount of food with you to Isle of Muck, which is good idea in case prolonged bad weather shuts down the boat service.😊❤
I would be too lonely, need my buds with me, and dogs
Love your giggles! Lol
Good point actually! Lots of it was long life so I could bring it back with me!
It’s nice to see you for a few seconds without the wooly hat on 👍🏼
I see Eigg and Rum every day, it is so weird to see them from another angle. Especially Eigg, it's like looking at Eigg through a mirror 😊
Such a wonderful view 😍
Hey Ruth, a week of near isolation, and wind. Very nice video. Back in '06 I took a 30 day solo trip to Alaska, and though I did speak to folks at gas stops at the least, it was the most time I'd spent alone in my lifetime. It wasn't so bad, I get along well with myself.
I empathise with that feeling too. As a child I always thought I would be a lighthouse keeper or a Clark Kent type newspaper reporter 🙂 Pandemic isolation was fine by me.
Glad you liked the video! That sounds like a nice trip you had too!
Scotland and Japan are similar as mysterious rocky island countries, although they are directly opposite each other. On the other hand, although the food culture is different with the staple food being wheat and rice, I can relate to the beauty of nature.
Amazing vlog again Ruth. I’m a complete Southerner. I personally never knew these islands existed. You certainly have to be organised having to take your own food. What a lovely cottage a beautiful escape with modern amenities. The mixer shower hose that attaches to the taps takes me back to my childhood never could get the temperature right. The island looked beautiful in the good weather. I think I could stay but I can relate to the loneliness you felt at one point. Loved the tea room , the food looked absolutely lush. Your filming is wonderful , you capture everything so well and your drone footage is amazing . I can only admire your work and how you edit and put together your vlogs, so professional. Well Done Ruth Thoroughly enjoyable vlog. Thank You
Thank you for such lovely comments, I really appreciate them.
I read that the split spigots was due to only cold water being potable, so you needed to keep them separate.
Yes, I have seen videos on the the split hot and cold water supply. In the past, the hot water might not be potable since the hot water tank was more of a "bucket" and stuff/animals/insects/etc could fall into the water.
WOW, Ruth! What a beautiful video - thanks ever so much for inviting us along! I've never made it to the Small Isles as yet, and while there is still time, I've a nasty feeling that poor mobility would now be an issue... I used to travel alone quite a lot and had Colonsay Backpackers to myself the first time I went there, around 15 years ago. I returned with a large party of friends some years later, as it always gives immense pleasure to share these things with others. They can be pretty windy places - but its all part of the fun, isn't it? Very well done!
Thank you for watching!!
I've seen muck, no muck to speak of here. Tis a beautiful island and you adorn it with delightful sight and sound expressions, even got hungry with that curry & naan. The cottage is absolutely inviting and I haven't made it halfway through the video without responding to this uplifting visual.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much 😊
I have just finished enjoying this vid. I am an old man now, and travel is a thing of the past. 40 years ago my wife and i, with our toddler son, went to stay with a friend and his dad in Bagh Mor Grimsay in the Outer Hebrides. Which was interesting and memorable!
I’m glad you enjoyed it and it brought back some memories for you!
You get a different perspective on life when you are cut off from the mainland. I at least had my car on the Isle of Lewis & Harris so I was able to explore a bit but it is a much bigger piece of land. It can be difficult when you have no one to speak to on an island. when I first moved there I could go all weekend without talking to anyone but I soon made friends and island life improved as in the main most people are very friendly. My boss in Glasgow was always surprised why I always spoke about the weather when he phoned me but you are very dependent on the weather for travelling whether by sea or air and whether newspapers and or fresh food and groceries were going to make it across the sea. Cows can become a little unpredictable when they have calves at foot so it is always advisable to give them a wide berth but at least they don't bite. I have not been to those islands but they have a certain appeal and I could hunker down with some good books quite happily. If you like to read the author Peter May has a trilogy set on the Isle of Lewis that I highly recommend.
I live alone all the time so I would be quite happy staying in a cottage like that.
One technique I use to re ground myself is sit on a beach with surf rolling in. Make a note of when you sit down, then turn off all tech. Just concentrate on the breaking waves. Get in tune with them. At some point you will come back to reality. Be amazed how long you have spent. Could easy be a couple of hours. Looks a fabulous place to visit. Being by yourself has its advantages but sometimes it is nice to share the days adventures with someone.
Thanks for sharing!
It is amazing to see how clean the cottage was . We stay in Bachs in New Zealand and they always seem to be run down rotten wood dirty cupboards with dirty pots and cutlery and ants, and they are still $200 a night ! Glad you enjoyed your stay .
I could easily spend a week in this cottage. I usually travel alone. Last year I spent six weeks alone in Ireland with my tent on top of my car, it was a fantastic trip. Thank you Ruth, for the beautiful and interesting video.
Where in Ireland did you visit may I ask.
That sounds great!
@@martymartin2894 The south of Ireland, from Waterford to Dingle and back.
Wow Ruth, really interesting video. I left Scotland 28 years ago for the warmer weather of San Diego, California and it is really nice of you to take me back to the auld homeland. I thought I knew Scotland, but it seems that I might have stayed in Scotland but I never really seen Scotland, your video's take me to the places I would never dream of going too, though on my next visit home Cambeltown will be high on the list. Thanks Ruth.
Sounds a great plan! 🏴
Thank you so much for sharing. I knew nothing of Muck and it was fabulous to watch you explore this beautiful island.
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s beautiful 😍
I love your positivity in this video. You are a hidden gem in the TH-cam world and people need to know about you.
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Thanks for the insight, into places most people will never be able to travel to. Great job. Thanks Miss Ruth.
I’m so glad to be able to show these beautiful places!
Always look forward to a new video. Great presentation and fantastic production values. Just wanted to be the 1st to comment😀
Really appreciate it, thank you! ❤️
@@ruthaisling can I ask if this is your full-time job? It must take a long time to make each video.
Yes it does take a lot of time to make each video. TH-cam is my main focus at the moment.
@@ruthaisling many thanks, take care,
I've just got back from a week on a small inner Hebrides island which was pure paradise! Think I might try out Muck next time! Very cool video by the way!
I'm off to Scotland from Australia in a week. I'm very excited to see the islands.
Wonderful video! I live on an island on the Maine coast (US) and take a trip for the day each summer to an island called, Monhegan, which is about 12 miles out to sea. They have about 60-70 residents and I would love to spend Sept-April out there to see how life is on an island so far away. I would love to visit Muck, spending hours just exploring and taking photos. Loved the cow, she probably felt you were going to get too close to the babies, silly cow. They also have a shop there called "Winterworks" that has craft items from the residents on the island. I hope you didn't have too many groceries to take back with you. Thank you for taking us along on this trip.
That sounds lovely and would be nice to experience winter out there in the off-season! I had about 3/4 of a bag of food left over!
you are Scottish tourism number one............... thanks for such a professional video................ love them.
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate the comments.
Yes I could definitely stay by myself in that cottage for a week. I would welcome the solitude not to mention the surrounding beauty of the island. You do an amazing job with your descriptions. Wonderful videos. I’m addicted. Thank for sharing these.
Miss Ruth, you have such a bubbly personality, like bubbling Coca Cola or Champaign! You are so young at heart!
Haha well I am still young I hope...!
What a cute cottage and a beautiful wee island, thank you for the laughs 😃
Glad you enjoyed it!! It was beautiful 😍
That cottage was way nicer than I thought it would be. Having your Starlink would make it so you would not feel cut off from the world. To answer the question. I could stay there easily. Once again, it's a great video. Thank you, Ruth.
It was nice having the internet!
Dear Ruth, I love to watch your video. They make me calm and I enjoy so much the nature from Scotland and her isles. Pure rough nature is very nice to enjoy. You are a very naturally woman and does not have a single arrogancy; the way I enjoy the best. A down to earth woman; please continue your yourneyś!
Many thanks!
Eigg with its cloud on reminded me of Cape Town and its Table Mountain with its tablecloth. Lovely!
Love that! Thanks 🙏
Great video again Ruth what a beautiful island.
It really is!
We use to have separate taps all over the USA; but they changed the regulations to only using mixing taps on all new insulations years ago.
If you find yourself feeling seasick quick keep your eyes on the horizon. It will work unless it’s too late.
#5 the simple things you video like tying your boot on, opening the door, putting all your food on the table, for me all add to the making of a good video story.
But, i'm old and like the simple life now.
From your videos Scotland looks beautiful. I love remote maritime places. Add to that the history, and the remnants of buildings and structures from bygone times. Nice video.
Glad you like the videos, thanks so much for watching!
You visited Muck?! It's on my to-do list! I could possibly be moving to Rum. I'll let you know. Another enjoyable video and adventure. Thanks again Ruth! 😊
I need to visit Rum soon! Thank you 🙏
Separate taps is more a legacy thing, due to existing installations. The supplies are still separate as you would expect but mixer taps are just as normal in the UK as anywhere else now.
Don't worry about the cow Ruth, it was just protecting it's calf. You have to stand firm with them and a stick like object (mentioned below) is pretty handy with a few loud shouts. Muck looks great, I used to work with a guy from there, he was partial to a light shandy, 🥃🥃🥃🥃 but only on social occasions you understand? 🙄😂
Glad to see there is a man going to assist you with the meals ( Russell Hobbs) 😄
I'll be able to stay there forever, just need a small boat
Very helpful 😂
😆
Good Lord Ruth, 1kg of Porridge, 6 Tins of Beans, Dozen Eggs and the all Important Whisky, Sorted.
😄
In my part of Canada (southwest Ontario) hot and cold taps were separated(like the U.K.), and houses did not have showers, but in the last 70 years homes have had combined hot and cold water in one tap, and showering has now become the norm. 😊
Thanks for the info!
Your presentations are fantastic Ruth. Keep filming and going where you want, we all love it.
Thank you, I will!
You’re such a kind and grateful soul ! I traded up when you said goodbye to the wee cottage and when you thanked the isle of Muck for having you for the week .
GOD bless you
Muck was good to me!!
I'd say u meant teared up, that stupid autocorrect does that to me alot also. I read everything now before I post.
I am of Scottish ancestry, Douglas clan,I live in the USA, thank you for showing me scotland!
Thanks for watching from the USA!
It always takes a little while to get used to one own company when travelling alone…. But once accustomed to it I’ve always found it harder to go back to lots of people around me…. i’ve been travelling up to Scotland for 30 years now and spending large chunks of time there in various parts up and down side to side of the country but I’ve never been to the Outer Hebrides or the inner Hebrides all the islands of the north east so I must make that happen….
I could stay in this cottage indefenately. I would be very happy.
さすが!良い動画です。編集も素晴らしいですね😃👍
This was a very interesting sojourn there on the island.
I really enjoyed seeing this exotic place through your eyes.
I find that stark, windswept landscape to be quite beautiful.
As a “people person” I would be a bit sad there with no one else around.
Thanks for taking us along!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it 😀
According to Google. The UK has separate hot and cold water taps to prevent contamination through cross connection. Cold water comes from the mains and is safe to drink, while hot water is served by a local storage tank in the loft. The law on clean drinking water requires that the two streams be separated.
Thank you 👍
Cows more protective in the presence of calves. Best not to hang around long near them. Lovely video, as always. Nice to see the woolly hat off. No bald patches lurking underneath. 😄
What an adventure! Love the cozy cottage!

Thank you for your videos, im binge watching as we speak. They are informative, clear, easy to listen to and a joy to watch so thank you.
All the best in your future adventures Ruth 🙂💕
Thank you so much. I can try mentioning it in future. I think Muck would be a good place to bring a dog but you would need to check if the holiday accommodation or ferry accept dogs.
Thank you so much Ruth, for the beautiful video they are so educational. Very nice accommodation which was well heated, just what you wanted. Regards, Andrew.
Thanks Andrew, glad you liked the video!
It was a very nice trip to the island of Muck you had.

But it was not aggressive and obeyed when you told it not to come.
It was nice to see.
They were happy people you met at the tea house.
That was wonderful☺️✨️

After that dog and now the cow Ruth, promise me you won't visit anywhere where they have Bears. 🐻🐻❄🐼🐨
Wow, what a beautiful place. You asked if anyone could live there for a week, well forget that, I want to live there forever I would move in straight away if I could. That shower brought back some great memories of my childhood because that's how we used to shower.
Loved the line only bought small bottles of Whisky because I don't think I would have been able to drink a full bottle (ARE YOU SURE)
You seemed surprised when you stepped in all that mud,. Ruth what's the name of the island again lol Also I spotted the the edit during your last meal when you grabbed the whisky, you were just about to down it from the bottle then suddenly jump cut and there's a glass on the table Hehehe
Day one you weren't certain if you could last a week but you did it 👍👍 Another fantastic video, Ruth. Well done getting to the top of that bloody windy hill too.
Silly question, however, is camping aloud ?
Haha thank you for watching! I’m surprised you notified that about the whisky at the end 😂😂
I think it is possible to camp but it’s probably best to check with the island first!
Hopefully I won’t be meeting any bears any time soon!
