This time, I'm spending 48 hours at the edge of the world. Foula, nestled in the Atlantic waters and part of the Shetland Islands, is one of the UK's most remote permanently inhabited islands. Home to thousands of seabirds, hundreds of hardy sheep, and the second highest sea cliffs in Britain, this wild and isolated place is where around 30 people call home.
In this video, I share how to get to Foula and my stay at the Ristie Guesthouse on the island's north side for two nights. While on Foula, I attempt to hike the big sea cliff called Da Kame, encounter Shetland ponies and puffins, enjoy a guided walk with the Foula Ranger, and nearly get blown away by high winds and heavy rain.

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!
P.S. Some of the links in this description are affiliate links that I get a kickback from.
Could you stay on a remote island like Foula for 48 hours?

@@kickbackrelax2819wow. I’m not sure I could do a month!
If the accommodation was warm and toasty, had plenty of decent food and clean drinking water, if it also had a computer and internet set up like mine at home; then six months would be a breeze 🤣If it was as like when you were there, then two or three days would probably be enough.
I've often been completely on my own, not leaving the house (except for pets) and I'd no problems such as cabin fever setting in...good home entertainment is key plus interests and hobbies; I'm quite social yet I like some down time too 🙃
Good show Ruth.
I would Ruth if I had an UP-5 Bear tent.
Those dive-bomb birds are Insane, but Yay Puffins! 🥰 I used to see them in Alaska as well.
I could spend the rest of my days there.
104K, Man this channel is getting bigger and bigger, well deserved Ruth,👍
Thanks David! Glad to hear you're enjoying all the videos!
OOOO, YES, EVERYONE GETS BETTER AND BETTER,
SOOOOO,
THANK YOU,
@@ruthaislingyou've inspired me to get my wee tent out again
My two favourite (well, only) regular Scottish travel TH-camrs - yourself and Steve Marsh - go to Foula in the space of two weeks! That was great, and really nice to see the Island via your two travel styles and personalities as well.
Snap! We're big fans of both Ruth and Steve. Our trips to Scotland are often inspired by their videos!
dont ever apologize for any part of the production - you make a very high quality product, there is nothing wrong with a more "gritty" part, its actually cool
Agreed!
Appreciate that, thank you! ❤️
Ruth yells, “ He’s after me” !!!
Straight from your dreams girl! 🤣
👍👍
😂😂
A bit about the Oceanic, it ended up on a reef called the Shaalds, a couple of clam divers decided to take a busman's holiday to Foula, and met up with a local fisherman who regularly caught "Rusty" lobsters, that's when they found out about the "Oceanic" wrecked on the reef called the "Shaalds". They managed to blag a ride in the fisherman's boat to check it out. Eventually, they spent seven years scrapping the liner, having many adventures and writing of their exploits in a book called "The Other Titanic"
Ripping yarns, especially for a diver or not!😁
So interesting, thanks for sharing more information!
Love love those puffins. Adorable. So are the sheep and horses. You can get a real sense of the island by the woman tour guide. Her life was so hard just to get water. What a Renaissance Woman!! Wind, rain, fog or birds life goes on. No time to rest. Loved the video.
Thank you! It was such an amazing place to visit! ❤
Getting so close to the wildlife and Whitey the pony was incredible. 😊
It was so lovely to be so close to the Shetland ponies!
Just 15 minutes into watching so far and spotted some of my animals, the ponies. 😂
Northharrier Kirch is the grey one trying to give you kisses, he's a sweetheart. Kirch was born on Foula and has never left the isle. I've owned him for the great majority of his 19 years. My 2 red and white ponies with him are also Foula born, mother and daughter pair Northharrier Reflection and Charliemay Rain-goose. Most of my others are from Unst arriving here on the ferry.
Wow, how amazing! I loved meeting your ponies. I think Kirch was my favourite animal I've ever encountered! ❤
Thank you for braving the swooping birds, wind and rain for making and sharing this wonderful episode! The puffins, sheep and Shetland ponies are awesome to see. The ranger walk with Sheila was great! Ruth, you are the perfect tour guide. I love the history, local facts and travel information you share about these wonderful locations in Scotland. 👍😃
So glad you enjoyed this video, thanks for watching! ❤️
@@ruthaisling You’re very welcome😃
What a trip! Thank you for sharing 🙏 An inspiration for women wanting to travel alone but not used to it like me 💗
Thanks for watching Rachel! I always think there is no point in me waiting around for someone else to do things with or go places with.
@ruthaisling I would go with you but my old bones wouldn't be able to do all the waking 😂
Walking lol
@@ruthaislingany fella would be LUCKY to be able to travel with you Ruth!
Feel like I’m at home by a fire with a mug of tea it’s raining outside and my dogs are nodding off every time I listen to these videos.
Love your work Ruth
Thank you so much 😊
I used to have a (mainland) croft with coloured Shetland sheep and the Shetland Sheep from Foula are quite sought after because they have some of the most interesting colours and coat patterns!
Oh interesting! I loved watching the sheep while on the island, they are so cute! ❤️
I and I expect a lot of other people would love 48 hours on the Island , certainly get away from it all up there. One of the officers on the R.M.S Oceanic when it was wrecked was Charles Lightoller who later became famous in his role as the first officer on the Titanic..
That’s really interesting to know, thanks for sharing about that!
I lived in Foula when i was young, most of its inhabitants are my family the Gears , glad you liked it so much.
I felt bad for you being so cold and wet, but also really enjoyed seeing Foula. So beautiful, and….. puffins! ❤ Love your videos!
Thank you! 😊
The Icelandic word for bird is fugl but the word has various grammatical forms, including fugla, so I can see the connection.
Great report from Shetland, great nature. And the birds that attack you are only defending their nests.
5 seconds into this video and I know it involves Whisky. Wait. Did my eyes deceive me. Did that Thai Green Curry say £60 in the book?
It was £60 for two portions / £30 for one portion
@@ruthaisling Ourageous. No whisky. Going to have to drink for you.
@@windemup5316yes please do 😂
My initial thought was, holy crap that's expensive!"
Then I, firstly, realised that's for two, so £30 each....
dominoes pizza will cost you pretty much that in the mainland UK! £30 each for a delivery meal in the most remote part of the UK is actually not that bad at all!
@@ChuckFickens1972- oh my goodness!! That price for Dominoes is outrageous!! 😢
Thats my kind of place, beautiful and wild.
Very remote and wild!
Hi Ruth, I lived in Shetland of over 7 years and it has a place in my heart for sure. I've heard born and bred Shetlanders use both Ler-wick and Leh-rick in conversation. I think it just depends on what part of Shetland the individual is from.
I've had quite a few encounters with Bonxies on Hermaness, on Unst. They're quite intimidating, aren't they. Another scary bird is the Artic Tern, known as the Tirrick in Shetland. They're very much smaller than the Bonxie, but with a fearsome, sword-like bill. They nest at the top of beaches, on the ground, and attack in squadrons of many and from all directions if you're unlucky enough to wander too close to their nests. They can easily draw blood with their bills, but they also target you with nasty smelling poo too!!
I never managed to get over to Foula, sadly, but hope to one day. I have been lucky enough to visit the island of Mousa and its broch, which is the most complete and best-preserved broch in Scotland.
Oh wow what a lovely place to live for 7 years! I encounter some Arctic Terns in the next video! 😂
Right. When visiting Foula, bring a tennis racket to defend yourself against the attack birds.
That might have been helpful 😂 those skuas were crazy!!
Ruth, you are Scotish brave. I was taken by the beautiful scenes. The quality of the video is outstanding. We all feel that we are there with you. The movement of the air over head by the birds wings. Love those ponies. Thank you for staying out of the dangerous rock formation. We need you to continue your Scotish journeys. Much adored.
Thank you so much! ❤️
Liebchen... 💌 such nice videos, I admire your independent spirit and excellent production quality, not to mention that I enjoy watching and listening to you. You improve my day! Thank you!
Love your videos Ruth. They bring me so much peace but are also very entertaining
That’s so nice to hear! Thanks for watching!
You finally got to see the puffins. You were able to capture some wonderful shots of those beautiful birds. The Shetland ponies seemed to really enjoy your company…very heart warming.
Loved both the puffins and the ponies!
Title reminds me of the great Irish film the field when the bull McCabe is heading to the cliffs with the cattle and taoghe says where you going Da and he answers to the edge of the world.
Magical Ruth, I toured Shetland 2 years ago but sadly never made the small islands like Foula / Fair Isle, I'd love to go back and do them, so thank you so much for the tour of Foula, those cliffs are amazing and the views outstanding ❤️ 🏴
The cliffs really were something else! 😍
Enjoyable video Ruth. Have you seen the 1937 movie by Powell and Pressburger called The Edge of the World ? It’s about the final evacuation of the island of StKilda. They were not allowed to film on that island so they chose Foula as their location. The cast and crew had to stay there for months, building their own accommodation, and suffering from similar conditions that you did. I think you would enjoy the film very much as it shows the raw natural beauty of Foula.
No but I must get round to watching it!
Thanks I found it on Amazon prime
G'day wee lassie. Beautiful face, gorgeous accent. Excellent video. The Puffins look so cute, their coloured beaks quite spectacular. My Scottish ancestors make me proud. Scotland is so wonderful to see. Douglas from Down Under.
ps You need to buy a good quality sailing top & pants, used by sailors in bad weather.
Thanks so much 😊
Yey 🎉!! Sunday Funday with Ruthie ❤😊. This was an amazing trip . Loved the ponies 🐴and puffens 🐧
Thank you! The puffins and ponies were so cute! 😍
Ruth, you asked for recommendations for rainwear that would withstand the Scottish climate. Last year I went to Alaska and it rains there a lot and fiercely. So I researched Goretex rainwear and bought a hooded raincoat. There are different companies who sell Goretex. I always wondered if it was worth the price. There are several types to choose from depending on your preferences. I decided after being drenched with regular rain gear I would give it a try. What a revelation! It rained everyday I was in Alaska and I was a comfortable as can be. Not only that but I found some trail shoes that are also Goretex, so no more wet socks and chilly feet. It is well worth every cent!
Sunday funday with ruth. This was an amazing trip. Awesome friend. 👍
Thanks Adrian!
Those birds are nasty Gezz. I love the puffins too they are cute . again interesting love the sheep and Shetlands so very cute & the adorable puffins The views were out of this world , The ranger would have been so interest to chat with, For rain gear id go with Arc'teryx Beta LT. The food looked so tasty Mmm. Glad you enjoyed your time on the island it was beautiful . London, Ontario, Canada .
Etymology of the island makes sense. Norse fowls.
Shetland and Orkney are both on our bucket list. We visit Scotland every year and Mull has just become our favourite island, closely followed by Lunga with all it's wonderful puffins!
Another great video , great scenery thank you Ruth .
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been soaked through like you were, but then I discovered Aussie oilskin coats. I've had mine for over 30 years. Heavy, but I fear no rain. Loved this video because of all your new friends, winged and four legged.
Dri za bone .or something like that
Thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks Ruth!!
Thanks for watching!
I loved watching this video, I visited foula on a school trip 34 years ago and this brings back many happy memories, especially those bonxies! 👍
What an amazing place to go on a school trip! Mine were never anywhere very exciting 😆
Those aggressive birds were wild! Very scary!
They were! 😂
Fantastic video, and to have the chance to listen to the ranger/local, you just can't beat it. My wife watched you for the first time on your video of ardamuchan and loved it.... i hope you can keep them coming 👍🏴
YES!!!!!!!
SO LOOKING FORWARD 2 THIS UPLOAD L👀KS A CRACKER AS ALWAYS 👍😉
EXCELLENT THUMBNAIL AS ALWAYS,
RUTH IS SOOOOOO, DOWN 2 EARTH,
Thanks David!
I could stay for many weeks, it looks amazing there. Seeing the ponies and all of the Puffin. I found the rangers book on Thriftbooks , looking forward to reading it. I look forward to seeing your videos each week, always a fun adventure! It's nice to know there are places left that are not over crowded, very peaceful.
Hope you enjoy the book. I’m looking forward to reading it too!
I visited Foula during the summer of 1980 & again the following year, 1981 to do intertidal studies of the flora & fauna. Each time I went with Brathay Exploration Group & stayed in Ristie which at that time was much more basic than clearly it is now. The island made a lasting impression on me in terms of it's sheer beauty, the cliffs, the variety of its rocky & its boulder beaches. Does the Gaarda Stack still haves its arch? I am glad to see Sheila Gear looking so hale & hearty.
As far as great rain-gear, I had good luck with a brand called Frog Togs --- they not only shed rain really well, but they're breathable. Let water vapor out while keeping the rain away. Are very light-weight and easy to stow!
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll check that brand out!
Awesome terrain and views. Once again, thank you for sharing your adventure with us all.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice ponies, very sociable.
Sheila is a perfect guide who tells a lot about the history of the island.
It was a hard walk you had in the rain when you visited the gorge, but it's nice afterwards when you get food and rest.
Thanks for the trip Ruth.
You are so nice.
It was great to hear from Sheila about her life, so interesting!
You're videos are made in the most beautiful locations in the world Ruth!
This place is very beautiful!
@@ruthaisling Indeed! Would love to visit it myself one day.
That was an excellent video Ruth, lot more informative than Steve Marsh video on the same island.
Good to see you over 100 thousand
Steve did 24hr with a wild camp overnight, with a view to coming back for a longer period.
I absolutely loved watching this video. I’m a single female wanting to explore more of the UK, I have anxiety at the thought of travelling on my own. Your videos are helping me pluck up the courage to get out there and enjoy life. Thank you Ruth.
I hope you manage to do some trips!
Ruth wear your glasses to protect yourself from those birds! Wow what a magnificent island! Ruth, you make the best videos of your fun adventures and travels! Enjoy!! I must visit Scotland after I'm settled in Italy. God bless My Scottish Sis!!!
Thank you so much! ❤️
Great video. Will you visit the Faroe Isles one day, I wonder?
Waterproof clothing? This is old fashioned but I used to like wearing my Driza Bone, full-length riding coat; it covers you all the way down to below the knee, has loops to keep the lower half of the coat close to your legs, and a split up the back so you can ride a horse. It is made of waxed canvas and I never had any leaks, even in horizontal Welsh rain. I suppose you could to add a waterproof hood for extremely strong winds with stinging rain (but I never bother; I just wear a wide-brimmed hat and turn the collar up.
If the weather is very cold, you can add a down-filled puffy jacket underneath to keep you warm because the coat is just one layer of waxed canvas, but I prefer that -- it's so easy to add underlayers for warmth or remove them to cool off when on a wet hike. Also, because most of you is covered by the coat, good boots and a pair of gaiters is enough to keep your bottom half dry and not over-heated.
Interesting video, sorry but was in stitches with the bird attack 😂 great stuff 👌
Haha I’m so glad they didn’t decide to poo on me too 😂
Puffins, winds, rain, cliffs, ponies and more. Sounds like a great place to visit. Maybe not in winter though. :)
It was amazing 🤩
Yet another absolutely fantastic video Ruth, as always! 🏴 💙
Keep up your excellent work x
Thank you so much Andrew! ❤️
@ruthaisling You're truly very welcome indeed Ruth 💙
My biking rain gear came from Shower Pass. I’m bringing them in Oct when I come to the UK. I can’t wait to experience Scotland and England.
Great Video Ruth.
Thanks for sharing about your gear, I’ll check that brand out!
What an amazing place and an excellent video Ruth! The puffins are the cutest birds!!!
Your meal looked absolutely delicious!
Thanks for sharing this with us! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks so much! 😊
Ruth! What beautiful Shetland Ponies; such a paradise; I appreciate your fabulous videos!! You're so creative and a gifted videographer!! Blessings
Thank you so much! 🙏
Another great trip Ruth, I loved the local dive bombers, they did get very close at times.😮 You do make these islands very appealing that’s for sure.
Look forward to the next video, safe travels Ruth.🏴
Thanks so much! It was interesting to experience those birds for the first time!
@@ruthaisling Ruth I have had the same thing happened to me but with Seagulls. There were 6 pairs nesting on the roof of this building and I needed to go into the building. They saw me as a threat to their chicks and they all started swooping down on me, I couldn’t get in the building quickly enough, and when I came back out I legged it very rapidly.😀
Thank Ruth for the exceptional experience. Your ‘Birds’ encounter was way more real than the Hitchcock flick. Loved the Shetland ponies segment. The story here is my Great-grandfather brought the first Shetland ponies to North Carolina and gave my Mom one when she was a girl. I remember she told me ‘They bite!’ Glad you avoided that! Thanks again.
Oh wow that’s an amazing story! Do you still have any ponies?
@@ruthaisling Unfortunately no. My Great-grandfather owned a really large track of land in our city/county where his main business was a nursery. All was lost in the depression of the 1930’s. I believe the story of the ponies was documented in a book about our city which was probably first published in the 1950’s. Interestingly, wild horses still freely roam the outer banks of North Carolina - descendants of those brought here by explorers (Spanish?) from the 1500’s. Thanks again for your amazing videos.
Big thumbs up Ruth love your Scottish adventures. Just ordered Sheila's book 👍👍
Brilliant, hope you enjoy it! I'm currently finishing another book but plan to read Sheila's book next.
Hiii from Glencoe I know its been so rubbish hasn't it - loving all your vids I'm just about to put the bothy one on for my mum in the living room 🤣
Another brave adventure, Ruth! I love the ponies and the puffins. Take care always
They are so cute! I love them too! 😍
Puffins are like babies or us Spurs fans. They're just ridiculously cute. As always thanks for sharing the journey.
Thanks for watching!
I visited Scotland in April of '23. I truly loved the place. My wife has no desire to leave the country, so my daughters, son in law and granddaughter were my companions. My youngest daughter and I would love to do a trip of the Scottish isles. My Nordic and Scottish blood are begging to visit places such as this. Thanks for a preview!
I’m so pleased you made a trip. Now you need to plan another!!
@@ruthaisling My youngest daughter and I are doing just that. Watching your videos of the various islands for ideas. :D
My love of my Ancestral UK side on my Maternal side has brought me to Scotland and my roots in Lanark and Orkney a few times. I plan to go back Gods Willing.
I hope you can visit again! ❤️
What a cracking video Ruth, Foula looks like the most remote place on the planet! I thought the wind and rain on Skye was bad, it looks even worse over there! Cheers👍
Haha yeah it was pretty awful weather on that second day!
you do take some awesome trips and close by there is so much to see in your area thank you for opening our eyes to the area and the beauty
Thanks David, there is still so much to see!
Happy passing 100k!
Will you go back for the upcoming rocket launch?
It’s very cute puffins. Thank you for your introducing a Scottish remote island visit.
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Thanks for the tour of Foula, absolutely superb, as usual. Looking forward to your next one.😁
Thank you! ❤️
Ahhh ive got to take my mom to that island! She had a Shetland pony as a young girl and still loves them lol.
Those birds were Hitchcockian!! But those shades? 👌🏼 Thank you for another great video 🙋🏻♀️
Thanks so much for watching!
Love your videos ! So happy to see your subscribers are going up, well done to you 😊
Thank you so much!! 😊
Love your videos! Scotland looks so beautiful!❤
Thank you for watching the videos!
Bonjour Ruth . Magnifique vidéo comme d'habitude ! Vous êtes unique sur TH-cam et c'est pour cette raison que je vous apprécie.A bientôt pour la prochaine.
Merci! ❤️
love the accommodation
Another great video, Ruth. You can't make vicarious seem any more real. The maps and drone views are very helpful. It's amazing that with just 35 residents they can maintain their own water and power infrastructure. The discussion with Sheila was fascinating. It brought vividly to mind what living in that harsh climate without electricity and running water was like. Your attempt at a shortcut back to your lodgings from Da Sneck O' D Smaallie was harrowing. You are a consummate videographer and storyteller. Thanks so much for bringing us all along on your adventures.
Thanks for the kind comments! They are a very resilient community on Foula, I have the utmost respect for them.
Thanks Ruth. You not only take us to less complicated places but less complicated times. My ancestors are from Aberdeenshire and I try to get back every few years.
Appreciate you watching the videos, thank you! ❤️
Puffins are closely related to penguins
Penguins (All 17 varieties) are found in the Southern Hemisphere
With that large variety of birds on the island their food supply must be plentiful
Are those birds nesting as that swooping is a warning to stray clear of the nests
Another interesting video and how interesting to hear they use a different calendar
I wish I’d remembered to ask Sheila more about the calendar, it is very interesting!
I’m new to the channel and find your videos so calming. Excellent content 🤩👏🏻
Thank you so much, so glad you’re enjoying the videos!
The most remote inhabited island in the UK is St Kilda - there is a permanent presence there of about 15 - 20 people all year round.
Hi Ruth, glad you enjoyed Foula. I stayed there twice in 2006 and 2008 at Ristie, both times I had fantastic weather and great interaction with the locals, sadly some of whom are no longer with us. I few around the isle, sailed around the isle and walked all the hills and coastline, had a fantastic time time there.
13:38 In NE Scots (Buchan tounge) Fulmars are called 'Mallies' or 'Mallays'.
Love that name for them!!
Wow this place is beautiful! Ponies and puffins ❤!
It really is!
Wow Ruth, you do Scotland proud, showcasing it's people, the history and beauty of it's remote wilderness and shores.
You present all the beautiful and little known parts that the ' tourists' could never find 😂
Your Tai meal looked amazing and so did you , but not a mention or a wee dram for dessert 😁Safe travels , look forward to your next adventure 👍x
Wow, thank you!
Such an amazing video! Thank you for your hard work and lovely smile Ruth❤
Thank you so much!
Outstanding Ruth, what a cracking place and video. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much! ❤️
What an incredible journey.
70 meters is 229 ft. Good you didn't venture further being so wet.
Appreciate you sharing and would gladly stay there. I had no idea accommodations were even an option.
Nesting caused those attacks, just doing their job protecting.
Park ranger and ponies just classic. Very kind to provide so much details.
Enjoy your week 🌻🦋
Looking forward to the next video.
Thanks for watching! I think it might be the only accommodation on the island. It was really nice to learn more from the ranger!
Hi Ruth, I really enjoy your videos. Last year our cruise to the British Isles was to stop at the Shetlands but the weather didn't cooperate so we ended up in Invergordon, which was fine with me because I got to hit several distilleries.
Ah no what a shame, but at least there was a silver lining for you! 🥃
I would absolutely love a few days on Foula. With pen and paper I would write away for hours. Frogg Togg rain wear works well for me. Thank you
I must check that out. Thank you 🙏
great name for a book from there .. "west of the sun". I'll have to seek that one.
I’m looking forward to starting it!
Beautiful and remote. Great video as usual. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks Robert!
Lol poor ruth watch out for them birds gosh was funny though lol ❤
I have magpies here worse they peck eyes out they angry birds .
I stayed outside of Lerwick for 4 days in January for the Up Hellya festival. It's beautiful countryside and Lerwick is a charming historic town. Loved it. I flew from Edinburg to Lerwick and rented a car at the airport. Thanks for sharing.
That sounds like a great trip!!
Another great video showcasing a place I knew nothing about.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your videos Ruth, I find them very relaxing. I am planning my next trip to Scotland :)
Thank you. Enjoy the planning!
22:30 Shout out to (what used to be) Neil Nicholson Plant Hire of Scalloway, who did extensive work to create that wee peir there.... (I worked for them in 1994)
It’s a fab wee pier!!
Wow Ruth! Another wild adventure. From attacking birds to kissy ponies to the wild wind and rain,,, that looked like a chore. Got my look at puffins at the Isle of May in 2018... so cute. All credit to you for pusing the limits of a wandering adventure. Can't wait for next week.
Kissing ponies 😂 that walk in the wind and rain was something else 😂
