There is a good argument for ABBA being the best pop group of all time. Almost every single was a smash hit, and albums were full of great songs. Also their sound changed alot over the 11 years of their history between 1972-1983. Alot of their early sound was closer to glam rock, them pop and disco in the period 1975-1979 then they evolved again between 1980-1983.

If u listen to Abba records chronologically, u can hear the progression of their sound and the technology they used from 1972 until 1982.
Start with early Abba songs like - 'Ring ring' ... 'Waterloo' ... "I do, I do, I do, I do, I do".
Then, then first major hits - 'S.O..S.' ... 'Fernando' ... 'When I kissed the teacher' ... 'The name of the game'.
Late 70's disco & new wave pop era songs - 'Voulez vous' ... 'Chiquitita' ... 'Lay all your love on me' ... 'Sumer night city'.
And finally, their last singles - 'One of us' ... 'Head over heels' ... 'I am the city' ... 'The day before you came'.
There was such variety in their catalog... one of the best pop groups ever!🔥🔥🔥🔥

" Dancing Queen" is about the only ABBA song you might hear on an oldies station. It was a huge hit for ABBA and very well know all over the world. It is "the" quintessential dance song.

They became really popular in the 70s with lots of hits and then their songs became popular again after being in the soundtrack for Paul Hogan's film Muriel's Wedding in 1994...a very funny, quirky movie for sure.

ABBA never stopped being popular in Europe, not sure about the rest of the world. I would say that Muriel's Wedding got the limited success it did because of the ABBA soundtrack. Apart from in Australia, Muriel's Wedding wasn't a box office success (doesn't even feature in the top 100 global box office films of that year). Having lived through the whole ABBA era to date I can't remember when ABBA weren't popular, and have never seen Muriel's Wedding.

The Musical Play/Movie "Mama Mia" was created and written around the songs of ABBA. It stars Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, to name a few. The movie is fantastic, I know "metal Heads" that love it. It is a must watch.

In the mid 70's when i was 12'ish my older brother brought ELO and my older sister brought The Beatles into our home, my Parents brought ABBA. Still love the harmonies of Agnetha and Anni-Frid and the catchy tunes of Benny and Bjorn. Lyrics that fit the times, the 70's!!

  • @davidcruz8667

You gotta go further back, "Dancing Queen" came out in 1976.
ABBA took the world by storm, with irresistible, beautiful melodies. I myself had a crush on Agnetha.
Tons of songs you might have heard, Waterloo, Mama Mia, Fernando, Winner Takes It All, I Do I Do I Do, So Long, SOS, Gimme Gimme Gimme, and many more. They never disappoint, they had a genius for creating music that people remembered and made them feel. Keep listening to more of ABBA (Their name is made up of their name's initials, Agnetha Fälskog, Bjørn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Agnetha and Bjørn got married and so did Benny and Anni, though they later divorced but remain friendly).
They are making a reunion tour with new songs and CGI avatars that look like they did when they were young.

Jive was a variety of related dances from the 1930's that included the Jitterbug, the Lindy Hop, and the Rock and Roll. It was popularized in the US by Cab Calloway and exported to Europe during WWII where it became the catch all phrase for dances performed to swing music.

Well said! Yet another appallingly bad lyric video! No punctuation either, 'musics' instead of 'music's'. And what is 'Oh jeey'? when it should be 'oh yeah!' I wish Brad would venture out a little and not be constrained by lyric videos which are normally crappy attempts. This song has a great official video, and needs no lyric video, the lyrics are simple and clearly sung and heard.

Popular music covered a whole lot of genres in the 70's. From funk to soul, disco to rock, reggae to folk/country and a whole lot in-between. It did progress, as you'd expect, throughout the decade, with some going out of vogue and others becoming more popular as time went on. Pop music was kind of an amalgam of various genres. Some leaning more to one style than another, with different bands/groups sticking to one, whereas others would go out of their way to do songs in different styles, presumably to try to appeal to more people. ABBA had their own distinctive, 'pop', sound and were considered the epitome of what pop music was, but they were never afraid to mix it up a little and introduce different styles into their songs. In fact, it's what made them universally renowned. 'Dancing Queen', is about as pop as it's possible to get. Disco was just starting to get popular at the time this was released in mid '76, and so it became a standard of what disco-related pop would become. It only lasted for about 4 years as a whole, but it resulted in some very memorable songs that have stood the test of time. Some of which transcend fads and fashions to become evergreen hits. 'Dancing Queen', is one such example.

I played this record over and over at 13 while whirling around our house! ABBA are from Sweden! But George Mccrae's "Rock Your Baby" from then has that same dance vibe without being disco! Its a really good dance song from then! Please, please do that one and "Chiquitita" by ABBA! Chiquitita, I'm pretty sure means "Little One" in Spanish, but its the most beautiful gorgeous song you ever heard! The video is beautiful too, they're outside in the snow...ABBA's vocals and harmonies are legendary!
