ABBA is not considered an 80s band, not their typical sound. They were huge worldwide in the 70s and still are to this day. So many hits I won't suggest any, other than to try their earlier stuff.

@@Gekokujo76 Yeah, this was really the inception of what became disco. It and OJ were literally a generation apart. They'd probably love that CNN series that goes decade by decade. But of course, some trends started two years into a decade, and were done 4 years after it. So there's no solid way to divide it up musical evolution 'accurately,' by decade. It's a flow, not pie slices. We only recognize the 'slices' in hindsight.

@@s.mcpherson6354 Very true and well said. Grunge is defined by Smells Like Teen Spirit....who would have know that would be the song to define a genre or to draw a line in the sand for many bands that came before it. It's almost like before social media, musicians were actually focused on making the music memorable instead of just throwing phrases together, do a pre-made beat and call that music.

remember that ABBA is a swedish pop group, the name is an acrónim with initials of their names, and initialy was two couples:
    A Agnetha blonde singer
    B Björn guitarist songwriter
    B Benny keyboard songwriter
    A Anni Frida brunette singer
"Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight)" is a song influenced by American disco, after the success of the Bee Gees and the movie 'Saturday night fever "
In this song you can see part of the volume and range of voice that the blonde Agnetha has
ABBA was preparing his 1979 Tour of America and Europe, in the previous one , They recorded this song and filmed the Official video
There is an only video in which all ABBA is seen in the recording studio,
including staff musicians (bass guitarist and drummer) and sound engineer Michel Tretow at the controls, creator of the well-known 'ABBA sound' with his innovative 'wall of sound' multiplication technique (an adaptation of the works of Phill Spector)
The introduction and the instrumental ending, that characteristic sound of keyboards, is what Madonna used for her hit
"Hung Up" (with the permission of the composers Björn and Benny, granting them share the credits)
Surely for the latter, this is the second official ABBA video with the most views on TH-cam (behind only "Dancing Queen", which has already surpassed 500 million views)
"Gimme gimme gimme" was released as a single and in the álbum "Greatest Hits 2"
it was #3 in UK, don't succes in US

ABBAs songs are full of catchy and happy melodies; you get in such a good mood when you listen to ABBA. Their music pick you up when you are down or in a depression. Make you want to dance and celebrate being alive. The music is effortless, and yet so complex in all their different layers. In my opinion, Benny Andersson is one of the very best composers of our time.
When you really and fully understand the text of ABBA songs, you will be amazed of the depth in the lyrics and the phenomenal insights in the challenges of being human. This ability allows us to easily identify with the lyrics. I do not know of any other group that can captivate me and enchant me like ABBA. Their music and lyrics are magical.
Neither do I know of any other group that can evoke as many different and genuine emotions and feelings in me as ABBA do. This is a rare talent that ABBA have in abundance.
I go as far as to say that this talent makes their music and lyrics a real healing on a very deep, unconscious level. So, in these very turbulent, chaotic and uncertain times, ABBA has a HUGE mission.
    Love from Lena

When it comes to deep lyrics and putting you through lots of different emotions - have you tried Nightwish yet, basically one of Finland's main export "articles"? Rather different style obviously, but I haven't heard of or met all that many people who _didn't_ like at least some of their music (and nobody who didn't appreciate the artistry, composition, performance, ...). The composer isn't known as the "Metal Mozart" for no reason, and their now third and final front woman may be the single most versatile singer in the world currently 🥰

You need to listen to The Winner Takes It All by ABBA. This was one of the best songs written after the divorce of Bjorn and Agnetha. It is one of my favorites. Bjorn was the writer of this song. You can feel the pain that is in Agnetha''s voice. I would also suggest People need Love this song was the first before they became popular it has more of a folk music vibe. Synthesizers were the addition to music in the early 8o's. After Stevie Wonder won a gazillion awards for his album SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, every producer tried to incorporate them in the studio. ABBA was a world class band that filled dance floors with the uplifting happy grooves and Pop songs.

Abba are similar to Fleetwood Mac, in that band members were married to one another, they get divorced, cue songs about those break ups.
The intro to this is the first time ever that Abba allowed any of their music to be sampled by another artist, namely Madonna's Hung Up.
Abba are HUGE, and remain so to this day.
    👍

In a Nutshell, while Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles bossed America in the 70s, ABBA ruled the rest of the world.

This was the 1970s, but you're right that this would have been played in the dance clubs in the 1980s too. ABBA are up there as one of the highest-selling bands of all time.
