ABBA is not considered an 80s band, not their typical sound. They were huge worldwide in the 70s and still are to this day. So many hits I won't suggest any, other than to try their earlier stuff.
@@Gekokujo76 Yeah, this was really the inception of what became disco. It and OJ were literally a generation apart. They'd probably love that CNN series that goes decade by decade. But of course, some trends started two years into a decade, and were done 4 years after it. So there's no solid way to divide it up musical evolution 'accurately,' by decade. It's a flow, not pie slices. We only recognize the 'slices' in hindsight.

Grunge is defined by Smells Like Teen Spirit....who would have know that would be the song to define a genre or to draw a line in the sand for many bands that came before it. I doubt it was the biggest grunge song...and hell, it's barely on Nirvana's 10 Best Songs list.
ABBA was way ahead of the curve. They videod every song. This was the 70's many years before MTV. They fell right into the Disco era. Their vocals are impeccable. The blend that the girls have is magical. Get a good recording, their sound is huge.
It's almost like before social media, musicians were actually focused on making the music memorable instead of just throwing phrases together, do a pre-made beat and call that music. Music used to be made with passion and heart. Now? Not so much.
This is 1979... the disco era. ABBA were very cutting edge...they set the stage for the 80's, even after their last record was released in 1981 and they split up by 1983. However, ABBA have finally returned in 2021 w/ a new album 'Voyage'.

I recently played this song for my boyfriend. He does know ABBA but has not heard all of their songs. He thought it was Madonna at first. He knew Madonna song Hung Up...... was shocked to find out she sampled this ABBA song! I love ABBA!!!! And this is one of my favorite song of theirs! Make you want to dance and celebrate being alive. The music is effortless, and yet so complex in all their different layers. In my opinion, Benny Andersson is one of the very best composers of our time. When you really and fully understand the text of ABBA songs, you will be amazed of the depth in the lyrics and the phenomenal insights in the challenges of being human. This ability allows us to easily identify with the lyrics. I do not know of any other group that can captivate me and enchant me like ABBA. Their music and lyrics are magical. Neither do I know of any other group that can evoke as many different and genuine emotions and feelings in me as ABBA do. This is a rare talent that ABBA have in abundance. I go as far as to say that this talent makes their music and lyrics a real healing on a very deep, unconscious level. When it comes to deep lyrics and putting you through lots of different emotions - have you tried Nightwish yet, basically one of Finland's main export "articles"? Rather different style obviously, but I haven't heard of or met all that many people who _didn't_ like at least some of their music (and nobody who didn't appreciate the artistry, composition, performance, ...). The composer isn't known as the "Metal Mozart" for no reason, and their now third and final front woman may be the single most versatile singer in the world currently 🥰

If you want to talk about technology in 80's music, Abba other than synth was all non electric instruments and no autotune. Today it is all synthetic and autotune and all over produced.
You need to listen to The Winner Takes It All by ABBA. This was one of the best songs written after the divorce of Bjorn and Agnetha. It is one of my favorites. Bjorn was the writer of this song. You can feel the pain that is in Agnetha''s voice. I would also suggest People need Love this song was the first before they became popular it has more of a folk music vibe. Synthesizers were the addition to music in the early 8o's. After Stevie Wonder won a gazillion awards for his album SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, every producer tried to incorporate them in the studio. ABBA was a world class band that filled dance floors with the uplifting happy grooves and Pop songs.
Abba are similar to Fleetwood Mac, in that band members were married to one another, they get divorced, cue songs about those break ups. The intro to this is the first time ever that Abba allowed any of their music to be sampled by another artist, namely Madonna's Hung Up. Abba are HUGE, and remain so to this day. 👍
This was the 1970s, but you're right that this would have been played in the dance clubs in the 1980s too. ABBA are up there as one of the highest-selling bands of all time.

I drove myself crazy one day trying to find an ABBA song called "Hung Up" but could never find it! Then I realized it was really a Madonna song.
