  • EPISODE 80: On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron Snyder and I hang out with Cameron Hanes and Joe Rogan. Joe Rogan is a podcaster, UFC commentator, stand-up comedian and HUNTER. Joe’s podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience, is a powerhouse. Joe has been an avid hunter Since his first hunting trip with Steven Rinella on the MeatEater show, titled First Timers, Montona Mule Deer, which aired in April 2013. On his podcast, Rogan has interviewed such people as Jim Shockey, Steven Rinellla, Tim Burnett, Remi Warren, and more. Joe has a massive non-hunting audience that loves his show. And he’s been able to use his platform to educate the non-hunting community about how hunting is conservation… about how hunting saves wildlife and wild places. He’s a gifted interviewer, entertainer, and with the help of his good friend Cameron Hanes, I’ve no doubt he’s become a skilled hunter as well… as long as he doesn’t talk to much… so i’ve heard from Cameron.
I don’t think Cameron needs an introduction to the Gritty Community… but here goes anyway for you new hunters or for those of you who live under a rock. Cameron Hanes is a bowhunting fool. And he trains year-round, always pushing his body to failure and beyond. He grew up “getting it done” on public land with elk and deer and bear… today, he continues to inspire both hunters and would-be hunters everyday.
In the middle of this podcast somehwere, we lost a camera angle for a couple minutes--like 10 minutes. Cameron is cut-off the screen… sorry Cam.
This is a fun podcast--you’ve got Joe Rogan, Cameron Hanes, and Aron Snyder, all on the show. It was good time.

Im 28 and have lived most my life as seeing hunting as being wrong simply due to me not liking Trophy Hunting.. Ive grown as a person though and know that actual hunting for the gathering of meat is the most ethical thing a human being surviving in this world can do to show respect for mother nature in general. I have since done a complete 180 on the idea of hunting and can't imagine going through life WITHOUT going hunting at least once.. Its a thing I feel like if your physically capable you should try it to get some worldly perspective.

That's an incredible turn around cFlan, especially for someone of your age. There's a lot that goes into a successful, ethical hunt. Choose your availability(both specie and weapon), practice that weapon, and equally as important...learn to butcher and cook your game. To kill an animal deliberately, makes a small change in a person...then gutting and butchering said animal can do the same.....but consuming that harvest closes the loop. It's no longer a waste of a life when you eat it. Even if it makes it to the freezer, and you don't eat it...you've wasted a life. It's a noble undertaking, get out and do it!!!!!

Amen. I was never against hunting, but I never got into it until the last year or so. Partly because I didn't really have any family or friends around who did hunt. But I got into it last year and man I'm an Addict now. I've only taken a doe with a rifle, but gutting it, eating it is just a powerful thing. In the last year I even bought a bow and I'm getting ready for the season coming up.
I have read book after book. Spent a small fortune on gear.lol half of which I really don't need. It's just become a huge passion. Only thing I wish I would have started earlier. I'm 42, so still going to be a learning curve. But, I don't care.
The best experience I've had, was calling in a big Mulie buck to within 30 yards. From right across a fairly big valley. Didn't have a Mulie tag, so nothing happened. But being out there, and just being in nature, and the challenge is what it's all about.
      Good luck this season!

i grew up in a non hunting family but always had a knack for walking up on whitetail deer in the woods of Ohio. i was always curious about hunting and knew our upbringing as humans and as men. which i think has gotten lost in todays world. the first time i hunted many years later starting at about 30 years old, i knew i found what i was supposed to be doing. there are a whole lot of reasons on why hunting is necessary that i wont get into here, but yes, if you haven't hunted, and have that desire to? you need to scratch that itch!

Love the podcast, first time heard about you boys. I live in the northern pacific and hunt blacktail. One of the biggest problems with fixed is the distance they can run in the thick with even the best shot. I shot one last season ran 75 yards and was HARD to find. The rain always seems to want to come in too. Im trying Mechanicals next season. Just gotta find one best for me, thanks for putting this out there.

My ex-wife took my 3 y/o daughter to see Bambi on the eve of my first deer hunting trip.. Just before I left, she asked me if I was going to kill Bambi? I Never did figure out who was more traumatized about it.. her or me back then.. Today, my daughter is an avid hunter.. makes her own venison salami and jerky, and fixes her own vehicle when it breaks. I must have done something right! EXCELLENT VIDEO guys!! Thank you for putting this together.. We can learn alot from people who understand how to make their own meat and how important it is to do so!!

good work boys, classic stuff on the perspective of non hunters. A friend of mine who's hell keen on his fishing was giving me grief about bow hunting so I asked him if I went into the bush with a massive baited hook on a chain and waited for the deer to swallow it and then dragged it to me and hacked the back of its neck with a knife, would he feel better about it. To his credit he accepted his view was flawed. Another good one i use for vegans is asking them if they eat with a knife and fork and accept the responsibility for the loss of habitat that the mining of the materials required for their knife an fork has resulted in. The most intelligent, generous, considerate, aware and nature loving people I know are bow hunters. the act of bow hunting requires you to be a better person in so many ways

I'm a big fan of everyone in this podcast! All the conversations in this were awesome. I'm a big follower of Aron Snyder just mainly because i think he's super badass but also because he just is a good example to people who don't hunt what it is all about. I do have to say though, I am a conventional farmer and sometimes the topics on organic meat get a little disappointing to me. Our society cannot sustain themselves and the amount of affordable and safe conventional food produced here could never be out-produced by wild game meat. And I love wild game meat but it can't be the primary meat source, it's impossible. And in no way would it be affordable. I think there are bad eggs in every bunch, and TH-cam can show some terrible examples of conventional farming but those are extreme cases and in no way normal. Just like how it is in hunting. But anyways, big fan, loved the show!

You 4 really need to come to twin falls Idaho, stop by Advantage Archery , best pro shop In Idaho. And try your luck in unit 54 archery mule deer , unlimited draw hunt . On the elk side of things unit 54 only gives out 10 archery tags , but if you rifle hunt . I think this year it was like 25 bull tags and 100 cow tags . That's the kinda shit that pisses me off . I mean seriously, why not give out some of those cow tags to archery hunters . Like you said , it's not a trophy hunt for some of us it's about the meet.
Any ways . I really want to come to Oregon for an Elk hunt in 2019 , that's the plan , so where is this Bow Rack ,your talking about. I know I would like to at least stop in and see if I pick a day to meet Cam !

A day will eventually come where everyone will be tested, and it won't be until then that these "anti hunters" will realize, that magic plastic card won't feed you. I try and educate people on the purity of eating what you kill almost everyday. I just think a lot of them won't change until they are in that "oh shit" moment and realize i should probably know how to do this... but i love the vids, joe and cam are some of my favorites to watch and keep doing what you guys do.

Great podcast and I agree with 99% of it but humans are categorically NOT apex predators. On the trophic level (natural food chain), humans are about in the middle. Somewhere like pigs. There's nothing wrong with eating meat, and I wouldn't watch this if I didn't like hunting, but as much as some people get butt hurt about it, we're not great white sharks or grizzly bears. That's just as an important part of being connected to nature as hunting.

1 time i was in this another country and i was dutys there. Thats not the point of this story. There were bampi that been hit by car. That little deer was broutch to our camp. One guy was hunter and want to shoot it and he say that it can't survive. I sayd that i want to save it. Bampi couldent stand and it didn't drink or ate. Later after few hours it did stand up shaking but it did stay on its feet. I garry it out from camp and leave it to wild. I think that i should be it its nature. Next day it was lyeing on ground in ditz and another people was put pool of water near it. Bambi was in bad shape. In that time i know i was wrong. It should be put out yesterday. Nature is wild and grule. Sometimes you should think strate. Now and then i'm in to bows and hunting.

We're all grown up here, please speak as you wish and trust that we can hear curse words. I am infinitely more bothered by the audio breaks than the words. Both here and the audio version, just let it be.

I get it. But we're aren't all grown ups. Lots of kids listen to this show. And so do a lot of people who find those words coarse and ill-mannered. Not everyone wishes to use harsh language in conversation. Some people do, some don't. I'm not judging people. I'm simply removing it so that the GB podcast is all-inclusive. I want to bridge the gap between all groups. #kumbaya #CantWeAllJustGetAlong Ha! Next time, a little appreciation before the criticism would be nice... unless you don't like the show. Then never-mind. 😜

+Gritty Bowmen So far I like what I've heard. Feel better now, LOL? I get your point about the kids, I just disagree. I still think it's silly. Cameron likes to pretend he doesn't cuss but he let a few go this conversation. It's natural and I respect you more if you own it. You all advocate people listen to Joe Rogan and that is as uncensored as it gets. It's just silly to bleep or silence a few words when were talking about the mature subject of hunting.

+DHcrazed If the show included swearing this listener we be lost. Swearing shows a great lack of vocabulary. There are so many interesting words for expression, elocution, utterance, communication, and observation that increase our understanding far better than swear words do.

+Joe Lane well that means nothing to me because if you feel so strongly you should stop listening anyway because they all cursed. Grow up, words shouldn't offend you so much unless they are meant to tear you down. Get over yourself

+DHcrazed You've made my point, swear words tear everything and everyone down. There is nothing positive about it.
