went to a similar show to this in 2004 (Webster Hall, NYC); before Continuum, when John was first embracing that people would watch him jam the blues on the guitar for hours. it was incredible, and he brought out a couple blues players to jam with, along with playing some old Jimi Hendrix and SRV lesser known tracks. it was a wonderful evening, and also made me realize i should just quit guitar lol. as someone who had followed John's every move since early 2001, i was eagerly awaiting for him to just let loose on the guitar and i was supremely satisfied with this show. we all bore witness to the beginning of John Mayer "the guitar legend" and it was a special evening, much like this small Atlanta show. it marked the beginning of an era that we are still in today.
one thing i admire about Johnny is that he spends time in the studio most everyday. It's who he is. he got through the initial fame and girls and maybe drugs and is solid in his identity and loves making music. seeing him next to Bob Weir is so damn cool. i look forward to his new tunes!!!!!

I’m not sure where the other tape ended up. We were shooting a band that night and then heard that Mayer was coming so we just stayed set up. I’ve used my out of work pandemic time to transfer a lot of the old tapes. If I come across more, I’ll edit them together and post for sure.
He had just played a sold out show at Lakewood Amphitheater, so he was already pretty huge. This was a free late night show at Smith’s just for fun. The beauty of the boundless energy of youth.

@MikeODandy I actually think this is his JM signature. The string tree higher and it doesn't have the SRV gold hardware. Also there's no sticker on the back of the headstock he slapped onto his SRV strat. I think you can see his signature on the back.
@MikeODandy I'm not sure how much he used it especially once he got his 64, but if you're familiar with Where the Light Is - he uses it for Heart of Life on that DVD.
He talked about this guitar in a studio session for Paradise Valley. He saved money from his job at the gas station to buy that guitar and it went with him to Berklee.
