I just recently found your stream via a look up concerning the Quest 2. I am burning through all of your videos; they are extremely informative and a joy to watch, thank you !
Thank you so much; that was amazingly helpful. I have the beginnings of a cataract and 2 focal points. My distance prescription sunglasses, which are not bulky or too dark, work really well. I didn't think to try them until I saw your video, because my indoor glasses are bifocal or specifically for PC. Cheers.
Oh no, I'm sorry I missed it! This was really informative and it's definitely going to answer a lot of questions about who needs to wear their glasses in VR.
Thank you so much for the advice! I've now tried wearing my glasses under my Oculus Quest 2 and it definitely helps with the blur. I will try contact lenses as soon as possible!
@@DrEyeGuy I just got my contacts. Using the headset is definitely more comfortable and the image in games is quite clear. This is also my first time using contacts so walking around without glasses and seeing clearly is quite a strange experience. As soon as I can find a company that ships prescription Quest 2 lenses to Romania, that's what I'll be buying.
Thanks so much for this video and the very comprehensive explanation of what the heck is happening with VR inserts and prescriptions. Very interesting, and not what I expected. Keep up the great work Dr. eye guy! And thanks again.

Perfect! I have someone who is going to 3D print inserts for me after my eye exam tomorrow and I was worried about my bifocals, but now I can make an informed decision! Quick question: Are the blue lens filters you link in your description compatible with prescription inserts? And do they have to be a certain brand to be compatible?
The blue light inserts are just clear lenses with the blue light protection lenses. If you use those, you won't be able to use prescription lens inserts.
SUPER appreciative of these videos! Just got a Meta Quest 2 in December and have been struggling wearing my progressives in the headset. This will help me talk with my optometrist for the right script for lens inserts.
Maybe somewhat of an edge case, but I wear mono-vision contacts. Meaning my right eye is corrected for seeing distance but my left eye is corrected for reading. This means I can read up close and use my phone without reading glasses and I can also see distance. When I look at something at 1.3 meters / 4 feet, I see the object in perfect focus and sharp with my right eye and a bit blurry with my left. What are your thoughts on this contact lens setup and VR?
Thanks for the great video. Answered a lot of questions but I still have one. It sounds like in the video you're saying the VR lens insert companies take your standard prescription and modify it based on the information within that prescription for the correct focal length at the 1.3 meters. Is this correct? The reason I ask is, what happens if I have my eye doctor give me my exact prescription at the 1.3 meters? Will the VR lens companies still modify that prescription as well (making it incorrect) based on the formula they have, or will they make it specific to that prescription without any kind of math or modification to that prescription. It seems like it would be better to give them my exact prescription at that focal length versus some kind of extrapolation based on my overall prescription. I know you're saying there's some leeway due to the eyes being able to focus within a certain range but I think having it has close to exact as possible would be best. I know this is a long question, so my apologies. I just want to make sure they're not going to do some automated math if I give them my exact prescription at that focal length. Thank you and keep up the great videos.
Excellent question. Some VR companies will only modify the distance prescription if you have a "significant" ADD power. If you put in your distance prescription (or whatever prescription you put in there), they will make it to that prescription... at least with the companies that I have worked with. You can have your eye doctor give you a slightly adjusted distance prescription for the 1.3 meteres, and give that to the VR lens companies, and they will make it to that prescription. If you have an ADD power, and you put in your prescription, and the add power, then they may adjust it slightly for you.
@@DrEyeGuy Perfect. Great info and it sounds like if I have a prescription set at the 1.3 meters from my Eye doctor I wouldnt need to use any ADD power on the Lens manufactures site. Good info.
something that I'm having a really hard time with is that the quest 2 and quest 3 has a fixed focal distance, I have no problems looking at something far and focusing to something close but I cant do the inverse, even with glasses, when something is close in vr, my eyes will focus like if it was close and it makes it super super blurry and I have no way of forcing my eyes to focus far while converging to close, and I wanted to ask if u would suggest that I get a stronger short sightness prescription so I can have a much closer forcal distance so I can look at close objects without acidentally focusing closer than the screen focus distance is I been playing vr for a long time and the quest 3 is my first headset where the focal distance is far instead of super close and I want to know what I should do about it since ven if I have been playing on the quest 3 for weeks, I still cant ajust to the Way too far focal distance of the screen...
A few years ago we had a Hollo Lens come into the office, being in the IT department I went to set it up. Being cross-eyed I couldn't use it, couldn't see the image clearly and couldn't see the three dimension depth 🙂. It was kind of disorienting. Had to hand it over to one of my coworkers with binocular vision.
Just purchased a meta quest 2 and trying to figure out the process of ordering specialized lenses for the headset. Hence, your videos are a great find. I wear progressives. I am assuming when ordering the lenses, I just the VR Lense company my full glass prescription. Correct?
Would you ever make a video about masks with automatic massages? I saw you made a video about compress masks, but I was wondering if you would ever considering reviewing masks with automatic massages, because it's annoying to have to manually express glands every time!
I could look into it. I have only tried 1 mask like that, but it only massaged around my temple and orbit of the eye. It didn't really massage my eye. I would also be a little hesitant to have something else massage my eyelids. Do you have a mask in mind that you are curious about?
Hi Dr. Guymon, Great video - I had to watch 3 times. I have a quick question - I had LASIK years back and my distance vision is still pretty good, but I do wear glasses for computer work (+1.0R/+1.25L) and close up reading (+2.25) (books/iphone). I have astigmatism (-0.75/90) in my left eye, so should I be getting VR Lens inserts the mirror my computer work/astigmatism prescription, or lenses that just account for the astigmatism? Keep up the fantastic work and thanks.
When discussing nears sightedness, I think it would’ve been more helpful to say far point of vision instead of saying that eyes are perfectly focused at… (in your example, 1.67 feet). That’s the far point of a myopic’s vision. They can also focus well at lesser distances. (I recognize that far point and focal point are the same value in myopia focal length calculations as the infinite object distance in the denominator causes that term to = 0.) Thanks for making me review some lens physics and learning about VR optics.
That is a good way of looking at it as well. Focusing at lesser distances would involve accommodation, and some people can accommodate better than others.
Very informative video, sorry I missed the live. I have 1.5 prism on each eye, SP OD-0.50/OS+0.25, CYL OD+0.75/OS+0.25 and ADD 1.25 for each eye and 45 yrs. Do you recommend I use my nearsighted glasses or use without glasses?
Good question! With your prescription, you should be fine without glasses. But, with the prism you might still want to consider it to help with eye strain or double vision if you get it while playing.
@@DrEyeGuy I'm going to get insert lenses as wearing glasses seems to help with clarity and less blur. I've tried both my glasses - the one I use for computer/close up reading etc, and my far away glasses that I use for driving. Seems like my computer glasses give me best comfort. Can you please tell me what prescription numbers I should give the companies as my prescription has both and it's confusing me?
@@avarouxakis Do you have a specific prescription written out for computer glasses? If you don't you could probably have you eye doctor write you one made from your current prescription (if it's up-to-date).
@@DrEyeGuy The prescription above is up to date and the only one I have. When I ordered standard glasses I just had to say if the order was for near or far sight and they used that prescription to make me computer and driving glasses . But that option is not there for inserts. From my above prescription are you able to tell me what numbers I should submit?
You will want your normal distance prescription. If you know the focal distance of your specific HMD, you could tell your doctor that, and he could make a specific RX for that.
I have tri-focal glasses. I work in in IT so I use a single vision lens that is my middle distance prescription as "computer glasses". Should I use my computer glasses instead of my distance prescription when using my Oculus Quest 2? I want to get prescription lenses for my OQ2, should them be my middle distance prescription?
HI, Dr. Great video highlighting those points, you truly enlightened me on this subject, so appreciate it:). Is that maths correct for farsighted because I have +2.5 lenses for farsighted prescription lenses, and I have to reduce that to around (+2.5 - 0.75= 1.75 D) for VR use. I tried it with an old pair of (1.5 D) glasses, and it was a lot clearer than my newer (2.5 D) ones which seem blurrier in the distance on the F1 22 game. I thought coz it's 0.75 D away in vr already, you need to subtract it unless of course, it's just me being confused, or it's my eye condition?
I have tried my glasses and they don’t work. What are my chances that inserts will work. OD +0.75/-1.00/087/+2.50. OS +2.00/-1.50/078/+2.50. Is that Presbyopia or Farsighted. Your videos are great…keep it up. Thank you.
Great video, just what I was looking for! Unfortunately, the 2 VR headsets I'm considering haven't published their focal points (HP Reverb G2 v2 and Pico Neo 3 Link). Does anyone have a clue? People on Reddit claim all headsets are set to 2m, which contradicts what Dr Guymon says here about the Quest 2. Also, a question for the good doctor. I am nearsighted and have two prescriptions. One for very far away (driving a car) and one for 75cm away for PC work. There's quite a difference, for instance my right eye goes from -1 on the monitor glasses to -2 on the glasses for driving my car. 1.3m seems a bit too close to wear those and would cause fatigue, but the monitor glasses are not giving a really sharp image. Should I get another prescription specific for that distance or can I calculate this myself based on the two prescriptions I have?
You could calculate it, but if you able to get a specific prescription, it would be even better. That could also give you a warranty with reloptix if you are to upload the prescription. I initially heard 2m for the focal distance for the oculus quest 2 as well, but itnwas confirmed a little while ago it being 1.4m.
I'm 74yo and have had cataract surgery on both eyes. I opted for long vision with both my new plastic implanted lenses. I need 1.5 mag for reading and can watch TV without any glasses, but 4 feet away is a little blurry. Does that mean I would need glasses for VR?
Thank you, you answered most of my questions I was thinking about, I'm 58y my vision is 6/6 but I use reading glasses, and I just got Quest 2 and I'm anxious to use it, I can't read from a close distance, so I use 1.75 reading glasses when using a computer or any device when reading, So is it ok to use the VR with my reading glasses??? ..... Thank you in advance for all your advice.
My son has lazy eye left side +3.75) and has depth perception issues. Would it be okay to use this device and if you know any games that may help him with depth perception while playing on this device, please? Ty
Yes, it would be ok. He might not experience virtual reality like others do because of the depth perception issues, but he would still be able to play and have fun.
Hello from Sarasota, FL! I love your video - I have been dying to try VR (I am a digital artist who loves to create AR but have yet to try an Oculus). I have wanted to try VR but am not sure I would be a candidate at all. I have MS and TBI and neuro eye issues, I have prisms in my script .... basics of one eye OD Sphere: +4.25, Cyl -4.00, axis 045, H Prism 3.00 BL - OS other eye is similar. Is there any hope for my 57 yr old eyes? Would love to try but not sure I could ever get it to work??? Ideas???
I would honestly reach out to Reloptix, they are awesome to work with. With your prescription, and the need for prism... they will have the best change and being able to make your lenses, and all for a reasonable cost as well. I think there is hope.
i can read a book if its close up i could use my phone close up too comes into focus close up only need glasses to see distance vr going to be close up like my phone maybe id get away with not wearing glasses?
I have a very mild prescription for seeing far and I also have to have reading glasses I struggled with progressive lenses very much, so I got my far vision glasses and I'm going to get a separate pair of reading glasses at my eye doctor as well, I sure do hate the fact that I'm going to have to carry two possibly three glasses with me including my sunglasses but I just cannot wear progressives or bifocals, unfortunately I have arthritis in my neck I just can't turn my head or get used to the progressives
Beautiful video. I've never had any problems with my eyes since 4 days ago when I tried my first headset (PSVR2) for 40 minutes. Now I can't see well. The ophthalmologist told me that I'm starting to be farsighted and that the VR pointed it out to me ... could you clarify the concept for me? (I only have problems with artificial light sources such as the PC, I see the letters with difficulty if they are at 60 cm, if I get close to 40 cm instead I see them well) A thousand thanks. Matteo ( Milano, ITA )
Just bought the Meta quest 2 and plan to do a lot of fitness videos . I read it can be uncomfortable wearing glasses even when using the provided glass spacer. I will likely get VR lenses. I wear progressives. From what I understand, I just need my distance (-.300 and -2.75) correct? My script also shows numbers for CYLINDER of -.025 and -.50. These numbers don’t matter when using the meta quest? I just need to order my distance VR lenses? Thanks
If I have for the distance glasses +1,75 for the left eye and +2 for the right eye, it means that for VR Oculus Quest 2 I need +1 for the left eye and +1.25 for the right eye ???? Please an answer! Thanks
Hi, i have a question I ordered Vroptician lenses 2 years ago with a old prescription and haven't use the headset for a while and i want to play it again. But I just got my new prescription and the value from my last one jumped from R : -2.50 (+2.25) 90° L : -4.25 (+3.50) 85° (2019) to R : -0.50 (-2.50) 180° L : -0.25 (-3.50) 180° (2023) Is that a massive jump ? Would the difference be super obvious ? I'm asking this because I know absolutely nothing about the whole value thing and i wanna be sure I'm not wasting money on ordering new lens for barely any change.
The 4 ft focal point felt like the sky opened up and I saw God's hand come out and touch me. haha. I have been searching for that for so long. Thank you. I do want to ask you...so the present magnetic insert lenses take up no more room then the push on as far as obstructing the nose bridge as you experienced in your "Best VR prescription lenses" video from one year back?
Glad you found this video! I saw a comment you made on one of my other videos and I was planning on sending you a link to this video to help you out.... but you beat me too it. And, yes, both the VR wave and Reloptix actually made their design more shallow, so I didn't have the "nose" problem like I did before, especially if you use the glasses extender for the quest 2.
@@DrEyeGuy Thank you Doctor. My last visit with an optometrist I asked him for a script for approximately 3 ft since that is the distance I sit back from my vid mon when mixing audio. He had already tested my eyes for distance using the eye chart. He then juggled those numbers to get the 3 ft script, but seemed a bit bewildered doing that and a little baffled that I was asking. I don't have those specs anymore and that was yrs ago, so I'll need to get tested again. Can I expect that most clinicians will be comfortable when I ask for a script for 4 ft ?
Haha! No, I found out my DSLR camera only has a lower resolution when using it as a Webcam. Woops... I'll switch cameras for the next time. Sorry about that.
sorry, I'm late, i thankfully just ordered the VR wave lens inserts, and i just got my quest 2, for the time being, can I 3d print a blank lens insert (without any lenses) so even if my glasses touch the VR lenses they wouldn't scratch them? are there any cons to this?
Very informative. I just purchased the PSVR2 and am disappointed that is blurry. My progressives make it worse. I can't find the focal length of the PSVR2. Do you have any idea?
I know this is a very late question, hoping you peek in here and see it. I have progressive lenses and have had contacts, but it's monovision. Would that be an issue if I went back to contacts? I have looked for this info but everywhere I have seen it asked I see only answers from ppl who clearly have no idea what monovision means. Seems the thinking on Reddit is that it means you only have one eye. Well, I guess that would simplify the IPD question. LoL
Great question! I would be tricky to appreciate depth perception with monovision. But you still could do it... there are people that are monocular (one eye) and a lot of them can still play VR. Monovision you would just have one that is more blurry than the other one, and so it would be difficult for your eyes to perceive the depth.
I just had a realization… my eyesight progressively get worse over time, so I will have to resort to getting multiple Oculus prescription lenses… that’s not what I want to do… any solutions?
@@SuussyBakka That timing should work for you... as that's the timing a new VR device usually comes out, and likely it will have a different design, and will possibly need to get new lenses for it anyway. That's if you decide to get a new device then.

My OD is (+1.25 -0.05x100 Add: +2.25) and my OS is (+1.00 -0.05x76 Add: +2.25). So If I were to get glasses just for the Quest 2 would I need OD +1.25 and OS +1.00 or do I need to add the .75 diopter of the VR and get (OD +2.00) and (OS +1.75)?

When discussing nears sightedness, I think it would’ve been more helpful to say far point of vision instead of saying that eyes are perfectly focused at… (in your example, 1.67 feet). That’s the far point of a myopic’s vision. They can also focus well at lesser distances. (I recognize that far point and focal point are the same value in myopia focal length calculations as the infinite object distance in the denominator causes that term to = 0.) Thanks for making me review some lens physics and learning about VR optics.
That is a good way of looking at it as well. Focusing at lesser distances would involve accommodation, and some people can accommodate better than others.
thank you very much for explaining this so clearly!
You're welcome! Thank you for watching.
@@DrEyeGuy Thank you!
Are there any special questions I should ask my optometrist at my upcoming appointment? Like an Rx for the for the focus distance of my VR HMD?
You will want your normal distance prescription. If you know the focal distance of your specific HMD, you could tell your doctor that, and he could make a specific RX for that.
I have tri-focal glasses. I work in in IT so I use a single vision lens that is my middle distance prescription as "computer glasses". Should I use my computer glasses instead of my distance prescription when using my Oculus Quest 2? I want to get prescription lenses for my OQ2, should them be my middle distance prescription?
Hi Dr. Neal, Thank you very much!
You're very welcome. Thanks again for watching my videos.
That sounds right. If the +2.5 is what you use for near work, then yes, you would subtract the 0.75.
@@DrEyeGuy Thanks Doc, without your info, I would have ordered the wrong prescription for vr :) All the best
@@DrEyeGuy Thank you for the swift reply! I'll see if I can get a specific prescription!
Quick question: what if one of my lenses has a prism for up/down alignment? Would the VR lenses still work for me?
There are a few companies that can put prism in the VR lens inserts... Reloptix can do it.
Great stuff!
very informative thank you
I have a very mild prescription for seeing far and I also have to have reading glasses I struggled with progressive lenses very much, so I got my far vision glasses and I'm going to get a separate pair of reading glasses at my eye doctor as well, I sure do hate the fact that I'm going to have to carry two possibly three glasses with me including my sunglasses but I just cannot wear progressives or bifocals, unfortunately I have arthritis in my neck I just can't turn my head or get used to the progressives
Doctor my question why is the LASIK not recommended for above 40yrs.
(I only have problems with artificial light sources such as the PC, I see the letters with difficulty if they are at 60 cm, if I get close to 40 cm instead I see them well)
A thousand thanks.
Thanks
Hi, i have a question
I ordered Vroptician lenses 2 years ago with a old prescription and haven't use the headset for a while and i want to play it again.
But I just got my new prescription and the value from my last one jumped from
R : -2.50 (+2.25) 90°
L : -4.25 (+3.50) 85°
(2019)
to
R : -0.50 (-2.50) 180°
L : -0.25 (-3.50) 180°
(2023)
Is that a massive jump ? Would the difference be super obvious ?
I'm asking this because I know absolutely nothing about the whole value thing and i wanna be sure I'm not wasting money on ordering new lens for barely any change.
howcome virtual reality headsets don't have a prescription setting you can adjust
The lenses in the headset would have to be able to thicken or thin and change shape in order to be customizable to a patients prescription.
@@DrEyeGuy Sorry you didn't comment on my above last question. I'm sure lots of other people would find your comment valuable.
Why is this only 480p? Ah, you're making it blurry to make us think we need gla$$e$! Brilliant!
Hi! Sorry for the late comment. That's a great idea, and they actually sell these type of inserts on Amazon. Good way to save your lenses.
Very informative. I just purchased the PSVR2 and am disappointed that is blurry. My progressives make it worse. I can't find the focal length of the PSVR2. Do you have any idea?
You need glasses.
@Damien Spencer not informative in any way, thanks for playing
I’m trying to find lenses from Amazon and haven’t heard you spell the names in your descriptions.
went to the aquarium today and decided to try the VR experience in the lobby. waste of $12. shame, I'd always wanted to try it
I know this is a very late question, hoping you peek in here and see it.
I’m near sighted I usually read without my glasses
Love your video
Thank you! First time going live! It was fun.
I just had a realization… my eyesight progressively get worse over time, so I will have to resort to getting multiple Oculus prescription lenses… that’s not what I want to do… any solutions?
That's a tricky one. People's prescriptions usually level out at a certain point. How fast does your prescription change?
@@DrEyeGuy every 2-3 years
@@SuussyBakka That timing should work for you... as that's the timing a new VR device usually comes out, and likely it will have a different design, and will possibly need to get new lenses for it anyway. That's if you decide to get a new device then.
@@DrEyeGuy not that fond of just switching to new-gen tech frequently. If it’s for the cost of QoL, then it may be worth it. However, as I grow older, I will eventually have to get my eyes checked yearly~
I may consider getting a new VR device(s) & Accessories is worth it
Which lens diopter used in VR ?
My OD is (+1.25 -0.05x100 Add: +2.25) and my OS is (+1.00 -0.05x76 Add: +2.25). So If I were to get glasses just for the Quest 2 would I need OD +1.25 and OS +1.00 or do I need to add the .75 diopter of the VR and get (OD +2.00) and (OS +1.75)?
How old are you if you don't mind me asking? Do you have an "ADD" power with your glasses prescription?
@Dr. EyeGuy Do you know the lens specifications like magnification, focal distance of the Fresnel lens of the Quest 2?
How do you find the focus distance of your VR HMD?
You would have to look it up online.
@@DrEyeGuy I tried before I asked, I was hoping someone would chime in with a source.
my glasses are -7,5 and the right is +10,5. can i still use the quest 2 ?
Yes you can. That is a large difference however. Do you have one eye that doesn't see as well as the other one?
@@DrEyeGuy yep, most of the time i use my left eye cut thats the more dominant one. with my left eye i can see far,but with the right i can only see close. and my glasses are pretty strong, i can focus with both of my eye in like 3-15cm distance, but any more than that is a nightmare with my right eye
