4:10 yes the foam filter breaking up can cause damage. The foam blows its way down into the check valves that let the air flow into the exhaust system and can either block them closed (check engine light and trac light + error code P2441) or get them stuck closed (I believe P2440ish?) Regardless, blocked closed isn't too big of a problem, but if they get blocked open then your engine can blow hot exhaust back up through the secondary air system and burn it all up.
K&N part# 62-1370 was the part I bought for my 2012 Toyota Tacoma DCLB. I experienced the same issue when I clicked the link in the description. My air pump and valves were replaced twice. The first time I did myself because Toyota at the time said it wasn’t a high enough reported incident. Forward three years later I get a letter from Toyota stating a recall on the air pump and valves. Air pump and looks exactly the same as the first one. I recommend keeping the OEM parts to put back on for smog checks.

I have done this mod on my 2nd gen Tacoma, but Toyota replaced the secondary airinjection under warranty, I just thought I'd share that i use and cap off a spray can,I found that the cap of the armor all tire foam cleaner spray fits best over the filter, and helps protect the filter from mud splashing on to the filter 👍
Another location for it is next to the windshield washer reservoir. Every vehicle has had to have it since the 70s. Just for the sole reason of keeping emissions down on startup. No other reason for it
I'm thinking since not all the 2nd gen has the secondary injection pumps, it may be worth seeing if there's a tune to delete the system all together. I'm going to do the filter mod, but it only runs for a few seconds after starting and it is crazy loud.

Enjoyed the video. Well instructed. How often should it be replaced for a truck that is almost never in dusty driving conditions? It's a 2011 with 66000 miles. Thanks again.
Thank you. I have had mine on for I think 5 years and I just check it once a year to make sure it's not damaged or dirty. I have not had to change it or even clean it the whole time. It only turns on during startup for maybe 2 min. So in the past five years the fan might have ran for 12 hours.
As long as the filter is kept clean and oiled it will keep out any particles that could effect your truck. Also the whole point of this mod is to keep the filter for deteriorating and getting sucked up through your pump into your engine. The secondary air pump only comes on for mear minutes during start up and that is all. It is just used to improve emissions.

No boost in performance or mpg correct. The sponge filter is the only reason. Toyota fixed this issue in the 3rd gen tacoma but unfortunately some of the second gens just have this issue.
Some people got lucky, and they don't have one. I'm not sure what ones have it or don't. But you got luck on that one if you don't have it down by the washer fluid reservoir
No, it doesn't. It only saves you if when the filter falls apart, it doesn't mess up your intake or injectors. The secondary air pump is only good for emissions on startups. And to remove it, you will need a 200$ part to keep you check engine light off
@@vikingveteran I have checked by the washer fluid tank, there isn't anything there. So apparently it is only on the oldest of the Gen 2 V6. So I am very familiar out this area of my truck. I also have been doing my own maintenance and repairs since I have owned my truck. I am always under the hood.
@@vikingveteran there might be the situation that it is a 3.4 liter V6 (not sure) in the video. I have not checked that out yet. IF it is a 3.4 liter that could answer the confusion (besides it being a gutless motor, I have driven one).
@@careywalton1 yeah I wish I got to work on more tacoma to see the difference between them. But for one reason or another I haven't had to do much maintenance on them just upgrades.

Sorry guess I should have explained better. If you are covered by there warranty then all it will save is up to a week of being without your truck. If you are past that then. The sponge filter inside the pump over time breaks down and gets sucked into the head. It can cause alot of problems. IE removing the intake and heads for a clean.
I have a 20007 Taco with 4.0 V6 and it doesn't have your configuration, seems that it doesn't have this 2nd air filter. You did mention respond to the same question from another person and indicated by the base of the washer tank. Sorry bud, but nothing there as well. I have been over the compartment twice and even ask the local mechanic that watched the video. He said my Taco doesn't have a secondary filter as described and shown in your video. So, that is why I ask the question to you. And yes, he checked the washer tank location as well to ensure that I am not missing it. There is none.
@@vikingveteran I bought it used, but there is not even hoses or bolt/screw holes in the area that matches the location on my truck. So I am wondering if it is only on the earliest 4.0 V6 models and not the later.
I'm not sure what engines have this but there are only 2 locations this will be. The one that I am showing. Then down by the washer fluid reservoir. If it's not there then you lucked out. Hope that helps.
Hey, I’m trading my sports car for a 2006 trd sport double cab with 4.0 v6 (6speed) with 290,000 km, apparently new frame, rockers and brakes and clutch was replaced 20k ago, anything I should look for ? Or steer clear ? Looks clean. Thanks in advance !
The only thing I can say to check since it has the new frame is when you test drive it. Make sure you pop it in 4x4 and check that it is smooth. I know multiple people with tacomas with over 500k miles and the engine still runs like new. But matinance was always kept up with. So right after your drive just check the oil and make sure it doesn't look foamy. If you do get it change ALL the fluids unless he has receipts that he changed them.
No need to be sorry. The way it saves you money is. If the original filter in the secondary air pump falls apart. It is going to get sucked up through the pump destroying it. Then traveling into you engine. This will not save on anything. But is just a preventative measure you take to save on unnecessary damages due to a cheap filter. Yes your 06 tacoma could use this.
Yeah right. But he you got to give it to them to fix it when they realized it was dumb No not yet but I did just move further out in the sticks so I need to get a garage cat lol
Thanks. I'm just trying to spread the word to keep these great trucks running. Also are you from Louisiana? I'm good friends with a vet with that last name
Pretty much yeah. Plan for the worst hope for the best. I really think this would only be needed if that filter ever starts to break down. I just dont know when that is and I plan on keeping this truck till it rusts apart. Were also Toyota would pay to fix it as long as you were within the extended warranty. So you always have that.
Do not waste your time or money with that OLD thing that at the end will do nothing. Just eliminate that stupid pump system completely and install a bypass kit from Hewitt tech.
Go and check their's 100% positive reviews . Yes it is 100%. After I got the filter by mistake I squeezed one of those hoses and my truck went to Limp mode, it was scary. Now I do not have that stupid pump or those hoses. At least go there and check those reviews. If you see what that secondary pump does you will be wondering why they came with this stupid idea. That is why the third generation trucks do not have them.

Nice video man. I was wondering does every Tacoma have this because mine doesn't and it's a 2nd Gen 2009 4.0
Thanks I appreciate it. Yes they do. It is either where mine is. Or down by your washer fluid reservoir.
@@vikingveteran I have checked by the washer fluid tank, there isn't anything there. So apparently it is only on the oldest of the Gen 2 V6. I have replaced the pump on my washer fluid tank and so I have had it off completely as well as the air intake tubing from the where it exit the passenger fender. So I am very familiar out this area of my truck. I also have been doing my own maintenance and repairs since I have owned my truck. I am always under the hood.
@@careywalton1 thank you so much for the update im really glad to know that not all of them have it.
Which motor is this? 2.7 or the 4ltr?
It's the v6 4ltr, but not all engines have this, and I hate this, but I have no clue what ones do or don't. But if it is not where mine is or down by the bottom of the washer, fluid reservoir. Then you got lucky and don't have to worry about this useless part
I don’t even have that on mine. 2010 Tacoma
Some of them do not have this luckily
Planned on doing this.....but it appears my 06 doesn't have this? Or at least it's missing from my engine bay
It's in there somewhere. Since it's not where mine is check down by the washer fluid reservoir
Made it to the end. Boooom
You are a brave man. I tip my hat to you
What year Tacoma do you have?
It's a 2013
I dont see this part on my 07....
If it'd nor were mine is. Or down by the washer fluid reservoir. You my friend do not have to worry about this issue
@@vikingveteran What's that part for anyways?
@@AF-we1zc it's just something for emissions. It pumps in extra air on start up so it doesn't start and burn to rich.
Thank you!
No problem! Glad I could help
Can this be done on a 3rd gen?
Nope toyota got smart and changed up the whole design of there secondary air pump so no need to worry about the 3rd gens
So what does this mod really do? It says it'll save thousands but how?
Sorry guess I should have explained better. If you are covered by there warranty then all it will save is up to a week of being without your truck. If you are past that then. The sponge filter inside the pump over time breaks down and gets sucked into the head. It can cause alot of problems. IE removing the intake and heads for a clean.
What a about 3rd generation?
You don't have to worry about it. Toyota is on it and they solved this issue.
Thats strange. Every tacoma should have one. Did you buy yours new or used?
My 2005 trd off road does not have this. Bought new.
@@vikingveteran I bought it used, but there is not even hoses or bolt/screw holes in the area that matches the location on my truck. So I am wondering if it is only on the earliest 4.0 V6 models and not the later.
Yeah my 2006 4.0 sport doesn't have this either
Is this mod the same for the 2.7L tacos?
I'm not sure what engines have this but there are only 2 locations this will be. The one that I am showing. Then down by the washer fluid reservoir. If it's not there then you lucked out. Hope that helps.
Got mine like 3 years ago!!! 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤘
Hell yeah. Keep these great trucks kicking ass.
What filter size is that or number
I have the link in the description for the filter.
@@vikingveteran pardon me for my ignorance, but, where do I find the link in description?
Figured it out. Maybe you can fix stupid!
@@billcaver3358 lmao thats not what my wife tells me
whats the name of the filter?
I have the link in the description to 1 place you can buy it
Did you spray oil on the new filter?
No I used it as is. It comes pre oiled
Sorry new to fixing my own truck! But how exactly does this save money? Is it for fuel economy? Would my ‘06 Tacoma need it done?
No need to be sorry. The way it saves you money is. If the original filter in the secondary air pump falls apart. It is going to get sucked up through the pump destroying it. Then traveling into you engine. This will not save on anything. But is just a preventative measure you take to save on unnecessary damages due to a cheap filter. Yes your 06 tacoma could use this.
2005-2011 don’t have secondary air filter. This was an emissions addition at 2012 .
Are you using a K&N filter or off band? If you are using a K&N filter what’s the part number?
You can use an off brand. The pump only comes on for just a couple minutes on a cold start up. But I have a link in the description for a K&N filter.
Ok thanks….in comiefornia…..only hit the trails now and then….a lot of street driving….great video ….
@@jrod4491 no problem. Oh I'm sorry. At least nature is beautiful out there lol.
Great tip and video👍🇺🇸
Thank you so much.
Thank you for your service, Sir.!!
Thank you for the support! It is greatly appreciated.
What a brilliant design...
A sponge Bob filter to get sucked into the engine.....
Have mice eaten your SOY Bean Rat Candy wiring harnesses yet ?
Yeah right. But he you got to give it to them to fix it when they realized it was dumb
No not yet but I did just move further out in the sticks so I need to get a garage cat lol
Thank you 🤙🤙🤙
Great video and love it ,your a Patriot (flag) new subscriber, have a fantastic day
Thank you! I really appreciate it. Glad to see you're apart of the viking crew. You have a fantastic day as well.
Good tip
Thanks. I'm just trying to spread the word to keep these great trucks running. Also are you from Louisiana? I'm good friends with a vet with that last name
my TRD doesnt have that
Really? What year do you have?
Mine doesn't either, 2010 TRD off-road
@@farrellstrueber7120 let me look into that for you
@@farrellstrueber7120 it seems that the secondary air pump location on that is right next to the washer fluid
Does it fit a 2021 TRD Off road?
This mod is not necessary, it’s mostly a personal preference
Pretty much yeah. Plan for the worst hope for the best. I really think this would only be needed if that filter ever starts to break down. I just dont know when that is and I plan on keeping this truck till it rusts apart. Were also Toyota would pay to fix it as long as you were within the extended warranty. So you always have that.
Do not waste your time or money with that OLD thing that at the end will do nothing. Just eliminate that stupid pump system completely and install a bypass kit from Hewitt tech.
You should put a link in the comments. The pump is just for emissions garbage. I would love to get rid of mine.
Yeah that kit is $160 + and will not pass an emissions test (dumb test)
I have that kit more than a year and it passed inspection no problems. It is expensive but Worh it. I removed my pump and all those wires.
@@lanchile5244 well then that is hood to know. Thank you, I guess I know another project to add to the list lol
Don’t have this on my Tacoma
Then you are one of the lucky ones that didn't get this useless part installed
WTF did I just watch?
A great waist of time if you don't have that pump. Hope you enjoyed
Thats col
Cool
