my dad got me into goth culture,, he made me love horror movies and goth music and i appreciate him for it. goth culture is absolutely beautiful
When you said 'Can you imagine going to a weekly Goth night at a club?', it made me all nostalgic for the days when you still could.
I started being a Goth back in the late 80s, but in 1990 I turned 17 and so it was the 90s where I started to go clubbing (they had the whole '18 to party, 21 to drink' thing at some of the local clubs here in Atlanta, so I could get in once I turned 18). Around then, a local club called The Chamber opened up and it was a Goth/Industrial (and also pretty k!nky) club that was open until 2005 and unlike some of the other places in town that had a 'Goth Night', this place was pretty much Goth all the time! IT WAS AMAZING!
Later there was another local, mostly Goth club called The Shelter that lasted til about 2015 or so, but Goth clubs -- and even Goth Nights at clubs -- seem to be fewer and far between nowadays. (In fact, I used to go to some local Goth Nights pre-pandemic, but many of those venues closed down permanently during the pandemic or just cancelled the Goth Nights all together and haven't brought them back ☹)
Yeah, as I said, I'm sometimes definitely nostalgic for the days in the 90s where I could go to a Goth club pretty much anytime I wanted. Now it seems like I'm always struggling to find events instead (especially things that are regular and not one-offs). ☹
It's definitely really sad to see the scene diminish so much the past few years and dedicated venues seem few and far between (never had one here at all in Ireland as far as I know, rock bars sure but no dedicated goth venues)
But hey at least you had that experience! Very jealous!
I thought that was hilarious. In the second half of the 90s and first half of the 00s in NYC, there was a choice of events every day of the week... up to 5 events on some days. (of course, NYC is "over" now, sadly)
We used to go to the chamber and the fantasia in cleveland ohio. The nostalgia is beautiful.
What a wonderful story. My parents actually met each other at the Limelight in New York city in the 90s. It was industrial/goth night and the club held it every tuesday. Depeche Mode was there and my dad dared my mom to go up to the band and talk to them. That’s how they bonded. Their love for the music and culture is the foundation for their relationship. They are so proud that I am turning out the same way. I’m seventeen (turning 18 in under two months) and I WISH gen z could have the same club experience as gen x. I wish I could meet more people IN PERSON who are like me. I wish I could have an excuse to go somewhere fulled decked out and not be judged but celebrated by likeminded individuals.
@@anightcreature Aww, the story of the your parents makes my heart happy. Hopefully some day gen z CAN have similar experiences to gen x with things like Goth clubs and hangouts. It feels almost as if so much social opportunity away from home has fallen by the wayside as the years have gone on and that's sad. (And that's coming from an introverted homebody!)
I like your opinions on Goth. I really think it’s what you make of it. My friends and I love the pageantry and the beautiful dazzle of being Goth but there are truly depressed Goths that can take you down a dark path. I think it’s like the art movement Romanticism. It’s the fantasy pretty meets grotesque. My fav type of art. ❤️🧛♀️💃

The Jenny. Jones show I was on as a vampire goth was called “Don’t judge me by my outrageous appearance” where a bunch of variation of club kids where on stage. I can’t find the darn tootin episode. Chicago “Nocturna” with DJ scary lady Sara ran every Tuesday in the 90s. She still has Nocturna on twitch and still has her night! Goth on forever 🧛♀️🧛♀️🧛♀️

Interview with a Vampire was a contributing factor and yes, goth music making references to living forever and blood was becoming more popular and circulated at the time, but I think there was also a part of the Vampire the Masquerade crowd that was a contributing factor to the goth/vampire correlation as well (also check out Kindred the Embraced which was basically a VTM TV show) People who would've been playing D&D in the 80's now the option to play an vampire and with everything that was goth already blossoming into that era, that sort of started bringing more "vampire goths" into the club scene.
Plus, the 90s was just a boon for indie vampire films in general. And books like Vampires Like Us, etc. And the 100 year anniversary of the book Dracula.

Hello from a 90’s Goth. Vampier and romantic goth kind of became a staple during this time. Also i remember vampier masquerade being a huge thing then. The mall goth insurgence seems to be when mundane people became fixated on the fashion aspect and not music. So I think many of these older news clips and shows will focus on the most obvious and sensational yet simple aspect they can for ratings.
I wish I had the clips your talking about. I watched them when they aired… they were sad. Over sensitive parents, over reactions from the audience and basically bullying little baby bats to conform.
Gods! I don’t know how many people would try to touch my fangs without asking back then!
BTW, it's spelled "vampire", not "vampier". But, yeah, I *hated* shows like that, basically humiliating kids that and giving parents permission to bully their children, who only wanted to be themselves, expressing themselves in the ways they felt comfortable, and if that meant wearing black and having fangs, all the power to them. I was one of those kids, too, back in the '80's.

Always loved the goth culture. I'd never go as far as using makeup but I like wearing leather. Always found the crowd to be welcoming and unique.
So, to clarify a few things, at the time, the LA Goth scene was pretty stagnant, there was basically 1 Goth club of note and 1 Industrial club, and it was pretty much the same music every night, you could set your watch by what song was playing, so when the Vampire clubs came along, it was like a breath of fresh air, "Ah, at last, something different!" Partly because the DJ's weren't locked down into just playing the old "tried and trues," they could branch out and play some other stuff that wasn't Goth, but could still fit into the vibe of the club, like Type O, and Concrete Blonde. We'd show up early and watch X-Files before the club would start, people would walk around and sing various songs together as duets. It added a lot of vitality and freshness to a scene that aspired to be a "good looking corpse," but instead had become more like a body dragged out of the harbor, bloated and stinking. So, that's what the Vampire clubs did for the LA scene.

Been a lifestyle vampire since the late 80s. A lot of folks got into it in the 90s, especially in NYC, LA, etc. I'm still semi active, along with many family members that have been active as long as I have, if not longer. I've seen families give themselves many names, but Clan or House are the two most common. And while many of us can and were considered goths, there are always those that don't. There are a wide variety of "types" in the lifestyle. And now that I'm no longer in NYC or LA, I do miss having multiple choices for which weekly goth/vamp/fetish club or night to go to. We were spoiled for choices.
That's so interesting! Would love to eventually do a deep dive into the evolution of the vamp lifestyle and how it integrated into the goth subculture! Appreciate the info! Also thank you for clarifying the terminology, was racking my brain and was still unsure!

we never **NEVER** talked to or allowed the press into the clubs in NYC... the vampire scene did, but not the goth scene. The vampires were entirely different then... essentially they were LARPers... later, they were educated about music culture and partially absorbed by the goth scene, but many things were and remain utterly different.
btw, the Fang Club happened at Long Black Veil in NYC for a short while (one of my many DJ residencies then). Long Black Veil lasted less than 4 years weekly on Thursdays, but it had 3 separate rooms each with a separate DJ and over time it improved the vampires enormously.

As an “Elder Goth” I just want to say that I love seeing the younger generations keeping all the beautiful parts of Gothic style alive- especially having the internet to make it so much better than it was when lonely isolated Goths had to communicate via (gasp!) the mail- clutching the special ordered European Goth magazines and dreaming of escape to NYC. And FWIW, cemeteries in America were designed as gardens for the living- people were encouraged to visit the park-like cemeteries with their families- to bring picnics, and to enjoy the stones and the landscaping. Jan and her news crew are indeed doing the usual shock value bullshit. And they had some nerve scoffing at Goth fashion staples as they wear the same fucking beige jackets like the anchormen, padding their shoulders up to their ears! The younger people now do *seem* to wear more makeup, but only because there is more visibility online to show off their looks. And now, just as then- no one is chasing around all the folks at the clubs with less dramatic looks to take their pictures or asked their opinions. Folks *only* wearing all black- without the big hair and dramatic makeup simply aren’t being questioned why they are there, or having weird beige people sticking their fingers in their mouths looking for fangs, or asked how many coffins they own! Anyway, I just found your channel- and subscribed!

It was tough being a goth in the 90s! You were either called vampire, devil worshipper, and/or Marilyn Manson. Being goth now is so much easier, almost trendy.
90s club scene was vibrant. We would look up most nights when traveling on the " International Goth Club Listing." Looks like there are still some lingering lists out there.
90s goth fashion, as you can even see in the LA club scene in the video, was much more simple. Most goths then would either dress more Trad or simple (simple is what most people call "90s goth" now).
Thankfully, at the time and even now, the club scene is still kicking here in Tampa Bay, we even have a local radio show, Communion After Dark on TH-cam. There is a dedicated club here, called The Castle, that has definitely helped educate the local community on goths. Even Goth Talk on Saturday Night Live used to say, "Live from Tampa, Florida."

And yes I've definitely seen more toned down goth looks referred to as 90s goth in recent years.

Loved the video, I was saddened to realize that Terri King, the designer, passed away just over a year ago from cancer. I remember seeing her designs in some NYC area gothic clothing stores over the years. By the way, we live near a town with only a tenth the population of Dublin, and we have a monthly Goth night at a local club!

A vampire coven is called a vampire court
I quite like the whole Vampire association, and I'm not even necessarily a "Vampire-Goth". I get its obviously not for every Goth, but my style Icons are Dave Vanian and Peter Murphy, so I can live with it. No-ones pretending they don't like Bats or Horror Movies.
I actually love vampire goth and the style as a whole! My issue is that whenever we watch these and it turns out to be about vampire goths etc the reporters tends to be more shallow and focuses less on the lifestyle and music and more on shock factor! Dave vanian was a style icon!
I'm so happy that you guys elaborated on the transcendental aspect of dealing with death-related things as things that are possibly aesthetic. I do think it's a way of accepting the inevitable doom that's upon all of us. It's very beautiful to me to look at death, especially my own, saying it's a part of the cycle of life and completely natural.

Actually, there were 2 vampire clubs in the LA scene, Fang Club started off after Vampiricus. Then there was at least 1 other Goth club and an Industrial club called Das Bunker, so we had lots of options at the time. At the very end of the 90's, Release the Bats kicked off, which focused on old Goth, old Deathrock (which I guess you called Batcave), but often would showcase local bands and up-and-coming bands in those scenes.
The goth night frequency in Ireland seems to be around the same frequency (if not more frequent) as in Sydney (Australia). It's so rough out here
I find your reaction interesting since the 90's was my Twentys. I was a goth for awhile back then and I still love Gothic things today. So, many things made it popular, especially vampires. Movies like the Crow and Bram Stroker's Dracula brought it more mainstream. I think that Ann Rice really helped though, as her vampire series took vampires into a more human, and thus a more relatable area. What can I say, my generation is into breaking stereotypes and traditions. I love to see how your generation is taking it even further.:)
I feel like the 90s was a peak time for gothic/vampire film and media. It started teetering off in the early 00s in my opinion. Fascinating to see how much it influenced the subculture and style! Thanks!

Been into Goth music, vampires and dead things since the late 80's and *SERIOUSLY* into it since the '90's. Fashion, music, fangs, etc. I make my own fangs out of dental acrylic, and make some of my own clothes from patterns I draft myself mostly 'cuz the Goth companies won't make stuff in short people sizes for slightly pudgy folks. They make stuff for what I term "tall, heroin-addicted rock stars": starvation-thin and half-dead, not for me.🤪

Even as a child , I loved bones and I was curious about why things were as they were. To me Goth is a celebration of life. A respect for it as well as a respect for death and how we die. How anything dies. It isn't just an aesthetic. The connection of death and life is surreal.

I love vampires, I have quite a bit of vampire movies and I'd love to have more vintage vampire movies to collect, especially the international ones are interesting to me! I would be elated to go to a vampire club or a goth club or festival one day as well, I'm more of a metalhead but I like some goth rock music like Diva Destruction, Sisters Of Mercy, Alien Sex Fiend and Christian Death

Yes! Goth is timeless, I can still wear cloths I bought 16 years ago...I have older clothes from the 90's but unfortunately the material ripped apart (PVC andrubber does not last) , but if not I could still wear them...Goth clothes are a better investment than normal clothes...There is no normal stuff I couls still wear from so long ago.
i miss seeing things like this in a strange way, thank you. oh, upn. the noise has a bit of charm... reminds me of old vhs dub. if you get a little laptop inside a larger sized coffin with some snacks and drinks seems nice if you want some alone time without the pets begging.

I recently found your channel, and I love it. Both of you are the most positive and lovely representations of the Goth subculture. I discovered goth in high school in the late 80s, and I lived through this reaction video. I actually went to that club back then, among others. You're so right in that it was a great time for the subculture. At least back in the LA area. There were so many clubs, both Goth and Industrial, happening weekly. It was quite an experience.

Good video. In the 1990s you had movies like The Crow, Interview with the Vampire, and The Craft that really bled over (pun intended) into Goth. You also had Buffy the Vampire Slayer (movie and show) that were a big part of the zietgeist.
Music wise you still had the original artists who were making new music but you had non Goth bands like NIN, Type O Negative, Ministry, etc... where you had some cross pollination with tye OG Goth aesthetic. The people I knew who were into Goth were also into Industrial and if you watch the movie Blade, you will see how this all comes together.The 80s music was a bit dated so you had these newer influences being more prominent to newer Bats. The Matrix also had a Goth appeal even though that was the tail end if the 90s.
I used to hate my teeth but when I went thru puberty and my face changed my k9s just look like natural fangs now and I love them

We've been to LA twice and both times we've managed to miss bar sinister! The first time was in Halloween and we had events booked so couldn't make it. Second time we were there during the week and it wasn't open! Have to make it eventually... Third times the charm! 🦇

I think part of the vampire and goth connection in the 90s partially hand to do with the rise of White Wolf and Vampire: The Masquerade and Masquerade LARPs

This is so funny. This brings back so many memories. I had goth friends during this time, I was more....colorful? More rave aesthetic I suppose... lots of Bowie shirts and rainbow hair lol .But just as obsessed with goth stuff but didn't dress goth. Just realized that my kid is pretty much the same in mentality except she has the dead stuff and wears neutral in public but nights out she goes all out.
Am really surprised and well also shocked hearing about only monthly goth events in Dublin. I´d move...definitely...couldn´t do without dancing to my music in club on a weekly base
I'm male just for perspective. I was a regular at one of the main goth clubs in London in the 90's. I had a job throughout the week which meant I had to conform with suit, tie etc. Key thing for me and it still is even now is that "goth" allows freedom and escapism. It enabled me to simply let my hair down. Nothing to do with death or anything else. Combine that with the simple reality that 90's goth clubs were not "cattle markets" and very rarely had problems with violence. As far as 90's goth fashion goes, I still wear some of what I brought in the 90's when going out clubbing or to festivals.

Graveyards were a place to visit your dead and have quiet reflection. People, like on the Day of the Dead, picnic there. It doesn’t seem odd to their culture. Plus, Mary Shelley apparently lost her virginity at her mom’s tombstone.

LMFAO "obsess about death." No... no I don't. I acknowledge it. It exists. All things are impermanent. But I'm really more interested in enjoying my lifestyle than in biting the dust! We did have a decent scene here stil 'til recently, but COVID sort of made a mess of things, and the old guard is sort of living more frugally these days rather than blowing our money on club cover and drinks. Sigh. Not really sure what the baby bats are up to anymore.

I sometimes feel confused at the difference between goth and gothic. If anyone ever asks me if I'm goth I always say no so I don't get interagated in a dark room with a spotlight in my face and someone shouting "name 3 Bauhaus songs! Do it now!". But on the flip side you still get all the negatives from people fetishizing you or looking down on you. Like you can't win! Feels like you are stuck in the middle :/
News people just see the surface. They probably just thought the music was weird, vampire stuff. :)
I'm afraid of death too, I'm more fascinated by bones and stuff, partly cause of "bones" the show. Hehe
im so grateful for the emo nights and oddities markets with bands and food they have in my area. they just started to do a dead night prom for all the goths and emos and alt scene in general

I got into Goth in 1998. I was 11. I found the fashion through Marilyn Manson and my grandmother, who was always cool about letting us dress however we wanted and listen to whatever we wanted, never really had a problem with the fashion (although she did often tell me that I "needed" color because, where I was so pale, she said I looked dead...lol) HATED Marilyn Manson. I mean....she HATED him. She didn't stop me from listening to him but she did pray every single day that my love for him would fade. I'm now 36 and I am still Goth and, while I know Manson is not Goth music and because of TH-cam I was able to finally find real Goth music in my early 20's (in the late 90's, at least in Ohio, I never heard anything about Goth music honestly....for me, that came later from a very old video I watched here on TH-cam in like 2007 and when I found a couple of songs from a few of the bands, I found I really liked a lot of the Goth music from the 90's so it did exist...lol...but no one talked about it), I am still a Manson fan. Turns out, neither of them were a phase. lmao
These were the sorts of clips that were all I had to go on being from a small town in Ohio where I was one of three Goths who were treated like the town freaks. I remember in 1997 seeing a truckload of Goth teens headed to Ozzfest to see Marilyn Manson and I was literally shocked. I was in the middle of walking away from Christianity and was a year away from finding a book on Wicca that changed my life completely so there was still a part of me that immediately thought to myself that they were devil worshippers. lmao How funny that a year later I started getting into the same stuff. 1998-1999 were years that really changed me because first, I started listening to Manson. Then I got into Wicca. I already dressed mainly in black and I had very dark hair and naturally very pale skin but I started wearing black lipstick, painting my nails black, all of that good stuff. And then in 1999, I, by chance, bought The Vampire Lestat and absolutely fell in love with Anne Rice's books and I started writing about vampires which I still do today.
I haven't been afraid of death since I left Christianity and I went back to believing in reincarnation so I don't really focus on the death aspect. My mother raised me hanging out in graveyards because it was something to do in the summers that only cost gas money and we were poor. Even now, I live right next to a cemetery. When I walk past the stones I tend to obsess over the people and the lives they led. I do remember a moment when I was 17, walking around the cemetery I lived beside of then, when it hit me that one hundred years from now, everyone I knew would be dead and those who were not cremated would just be names on a stone which sort of made me panic a little. But aside from that, even in the cemetery I think of the lives more than the death. But I do fall under the stereotype of having Major Depressive Disorder and when I first started getting into Goth, I was severely depressed. And to this day, Manson is my go-to when the worst of my depression comes. So that stereotype I do fully have to own. lol
I have watched horror movies since Nightmare on Elm Street when I was about 2 1/2 years old. I have been obsessed with horror movies and "spooky stories" all of my life. My biological mother and I did not get along very often but we did both love horror movies and horror books.

There is even a more controversial show which allow more controversy because it wasnt on network tv it was called richard bey sometimes it seem like parody. but there is no clips about goths on youtube.
