I was told I didn't look Christian because I dress in gothic attire. But yet I was told by other alt, that I can't be considered goth while also being a Christian. People are shocked when I tell them that I'm goth and Christian and it always made me wonder if I was considered a poser. I love the music. The clothes. The poetry. Goth has always been in my spooky little heart. Wishing I had more goth friends.

Oh Lord, there are many MANY Goth Christians out there. Don't let "Purists" on either side tell you that you cannot be both. The Lord knows your heart! This is coming from someone who isn't a goth but just a fellow Christian. (Although I totally love the Goth subculture and I suppose I'd consider myself internally goth. Haha.)
As a baby bat, I really appreciated hearing about not pigeonholing yourself! I adore goth music, and I love darker aesthetics BUT I also love 1950s rockabilly/pin up style and often combine that with goth because that’s what I love the most.
Goth is ultimately about self-expression. This is something I wish the Elders would teach the Baby Bats more. Instead of creating this super long list of subjective requirements, it needs to be taught taught that Goth comes within.
Mind you we do have a certain level of hazing (much more back in the day) but this was necessary to expunge the posers. We would get a lot of wannabes that would come in and either make fun of us or simply chase our girls because they found them beautiful (no argument there but these were creepers). In the 90's we also had a huge influx of Renaissance Faire types flood the subculture, but to be honest, they mostly were quite similar in mindset as to the rest of us.
As time goes on, many different groups of misfits started crossing over into the Goth community. Some would say this diluted what Goth originally was and there is some truth to that. But the one thing that has allowed Goth to last this long is that is has learned to adapt. Most subcultures don't last this long, and frankly I'm very thankful that it has lasted for so long, even if it has gone through varying phases over the decades. It's a beautiful thing to share with similarly minded people.
And to be honest, one of my favorite ways to "test" and induct someone into the scene is by sharing my playlists. I can't count how many times I've gotten friends and girlfriends go smile agape exclaiming "Where has this music been all my life?!". To which I simply smile and know that I have opened this beautiful world to another like-minded soul. I always encourage people to share more than to exclude because when you see the joy that someone expresses upon discovering this (to them) brand new underground world of dark beauty, it becomes a beautiful moment of sharing.
Well there's good news there, you know the Icecream Progression right? If you transpose that a half tone, you can make it sound darker.
I also combine pin up with goth. I get alot of compliments when I go dancing at goth night.
Ooo I think I might know a Genre that’ll interest you - it’s called Punkabilly/Psyhobilly and it’s basically 50s/60s rockabilly music combined with Gothic/Macabre Themes, namely at least a few mentions of Death.
Some examples (both in music and film) that immediately come to mind include The Cramps, the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Monster Mash/any of the Classic Monster films, some of Meatloaf’s work, the Dead South (though their sound is leaning more towards Country/Bluegrass), a few songs by Pomplamoose (“Bust Your Kneecaps”) and the Dismemberment song by Blue Kid, as some recommendations.
I thought I also might mention Will Wood and the Tapeworms, since he also has a 50s sound (particularly in the Normal album), but he kind of branches more off into the New Wave and Punk genres (imagine Welcome to Nightvale, but on Way Too Much Caffeine).

I’m Agnostic and Jewish (yes, you can be both. Judaism encourages questioning!) and into Goth music/aesthetic/etc! Have been since I was a pre-teen!
When I was a kid my family would bully me about my love for wearing black. I can’t remember what brought it on but one morning I found a note from my step mother that said, “you’re Laura, not goth” and “not goth” was underlined. We had archery at school and took my anger out on it and she sent me a text that said she loved me. As an adult I feel like I can finally fully express my goth identity by discovering new goth bands like Vision Video and customizing my leather jacket.
One time I was grocery shopping and a man passed by me and I had my jacket on. He said to me, “yes! That’s how we rocked it back then” it gave me so much confidence.

As a 90's goth girl I had a few elitist demand proof that I was a true goth and I kinda just brushed them off with asking them to prove they where true humans to make them realise how dumb it sounded. I listen to all kind of music but the goth and metal are the closest to my heart. Not everyone loves every song an artist puts out there and that is ok. You really made some very good points in this video and I just love your content. Can't wait til your diy video comes out!
In the 80s in the Midwest US it was almost impossible to find a black shirt. It wasn't until about 1990 that I was even able to find a plain black t-shirt and even then I had to order them through the mail. Of course we didn't even hear the term goth until many years later.

At least in my city you could find black button up shirts of pretty good quality fairly cheap.
There was a religious supply house that you could get priest shirts from.
@Douglas Campbell Nice. I have a priest shirt now that I love but at the time I never thought of going through a religious supply house. I did have some sweet vintage tuxedo tails that I found at goodwill though. Those are long gone.

I love your takes on this whole subject. I have often been called a poser specifically within the emo/scene community when I was in high school because even though I always loved the goth and emo subculture , people accused me of being a poser because I didn't dress like it. I often wore anime stuff and hand me downs for the most part, but that was mainly because it was easier to find in my size at the time. Now that I have lost alot of weight and can buy my own clothes, I dress alot more alternative compared to back then. Still have anime tees, but lots of band tees (mainly MCR tees) and black ripped skinny jeans. Great video as always Connor and Lynn!
In the early eighties it was almost impossible to find anything black. My girlfriend bought an enormous cooking pot and was constantly dying things black with varying results. Even earlier we were trying to come up with a source for black clothing. " Who wears a lot of black" Priests, so we tracked down a religious supply shop in the city so you had the very funny scene of groups of proto goths buying black shirts with priest collars and rosaries etc alongside the clergy. It was so funny back then. We were broke but had fun.
😂 I always love the "Jesus is my homie" bit. Yeah I've gotten weird looks for wearing my gothic clothing at church and listening to the music while I'm at work. I'm the type of goth who loves an all black outfit but I also love to add a pop of crimson red to my looks. :P I guess it all just comes down to what you like and how it makes you feel. (Makes me think of the stage where people said "don't label me")
Absolutely. When I pop over to the church ( my next door neighbour, I live next to a graveyard!) no one bats an eyelid, they are just happy to see people.

As an OG Goth from the 80s we mainly wore all black but we certainly also sometimes wore colours (I generally wore all black most of the time) but colourful makeup (pink, red, purple, yellow, ect). was common in the 80s Goth culture, I still wear all sorts of coloured makeup. I would dare to ya it is a more 90s Goth thing to wear all black including makeup (black and white).
I wore a bunch of different stuff just mostly dark clothing. But clothing like that was hard to find in the 80s. One of my favorite items was a pink and grey sweater with a gryphon on it. I loved it. Flower prints were very popular with romantic goths.

I'm Muslim, and I've read extensively about Gothic culture and its history. Truly, I'm fascinated by it and see myself as part of it, despite living in the Middle East where there are generally no gatherings or celebrations related to the Goths. I haven't had the chance to participate in events with them or even find people from my own country who share this interest. However, I've met many Gothic friends online, allowing me to learn more about Gothicism. I engage in Gothic culture with them, and you, my awesome comrades, have taught me new things about Gothicism. It's a broad description that saves me from having to waffle on and get into detail about each thing I listed. Also, those things aren't a personality or describing yourself as one thing and making it your personality. It's just adjective language I'd use to describe my personal outfits/style/clothes and music preferences.
Alternative music encompasses artists from A perfect Circle, Askjell and Aurora, but I wouldn't say their music is that similar. Alternative fashion encompasses anything that isn't really most places everyday like goth, punk, steam punk, raver, etc.
Hippie music - 60s ,70s pop, folk, classic rock etc.
Hippie clothes - comfortable, natural fibres, earth tones, loose fitting, tye dye, colourful, etc.
How many people are just one thing, really. It's obviously okay if you are, or are mainly one thing. But that would be pigeonholing yourself. Not liking and expressing a vast array of interests that would fall under the above descriptions

I've been told that in order to be considered goth I had to love Bauhaus and The Cure, and while I appreciate those musicians, my preferences lie with Fields of the Nephilim, Alter De Fey, Molchat Doma, Christian Death and Joy Division. It's not what goth music you listen to but the simple fact that I listen to any of it and enjoy that type of music.
So if anyone has any music recommendations, I'd love to hear them!

I remember never wanting to be labeled or label myself as any aesthetic. I was very into punk music, enjoyed dressing in punk style clothing but never wanted to be called punk because my punk friends would always tear down anyone who wasn't their version of punk. I thought that was so dumb considering that a punk uniform is exactly what the culture fights against.... It's going against the norm and being an individual. I have always been very eclectic dressing in many styles anything from hippie, punk, goth, pin up, psychobilly, or just regular ppl clothing. It depends on how I feel....I love expressing myself through clothing, hair, makeup and accessories. I also love how the reactions have changed over the years. Before I got death stares and made fun of and now I get compliments and questions.
Ah yes, the good old Punk Rock dick measuring contest. Yeah, everyone I know who was in a Punk band just didn't bother with that. I went hard into Rockabilly and Psychobilly but came back hard to Punk and Garage Rock. I was on Reddit for a minute last year and I couldn't stand the Punk thread, apparently I am a Boomer even though I am 46 (shout out to my Xennials!). So only morons do the Punk Rock litmus test and it's just beyond stupid.

I started listening to the music in the mid 80's and I wore colours all of the time. The people who got their photos taken back then were the people with the over the top looks. A whole lot of us didn't wear all black, and not all of us wore a ton of make-up.

I'm just gonna add in regards to online listening there's tons of Goth DJs that stream live on Twitch. Might be more accessible to younger goths than online radio stations and it can be a great way to discover both old and new music that someone newer to the scene might not be aware of yet and also not a bad way to make new online goth friends in the chat.
Agree with yalls perspective on this 100% 🖤 yet I still hesitate to call myself goth because of some of those elitist perspectives. I'll keep on sticking to "gothic" 😉

I love Goth music but I also like listening to Nu metal, Deathcore and heavy metal, I even love listening to the rapper NF. My favourite brand has to be Spiral and I've got my own style that suits me, I don't wear makeup and use black nail polish when it's a special occasion 🖤🦇

I don't know if it exclusively came from this but I think that the goths drink black coffee come from the 90's in the USA coffee houses were all the rage so the stereotype of goths spending time hanging out in cafe's drinking coffee and smoking (coffee places also merged with internet cafe's so there are crossovers there.) Now maybe I only find this funny but romantic/vampire goth was also at its height in the USA in the 90s so it's hilarious to me to think of the goth vampires drinking coffee😂

Really good point about black versus colour in the early days. Punk was colourful - clashing colours, tartans and stuff - and the goth aesthetic evolved out of that, so it's hardly surprising there were colours in the early days of goth too. But, as you say, a lot of that was lost because the photos were mostly black & white (cos that's what we could afford to buy and could process ourselves - colour film & processing was too expensive). 2Tone was much more starkly black & white (clue's in the name!). But also there were all those Victorian visual references too, and they'd have been monochrome too.

I tend to lean more into the gothic metal side, like Type O Negative or HIM, but I do like some of the older goth stuff like Sisters of Mercy. I feel like most of my taste comes under metal or classic rock though. But particularly horror/shock artist - so Rob Zombie and that. Dunno if I'd still be considered goth.
I’m the same as you. I lean more towards Goth in my music taste but love metal as well. I definitely don’t dress goth like I want to. I love everything in the Goth community. I think it depends on the day what I feel like expressing myself in. One day it’s Goth the next day I’m wearing my Iron Maiden Metal shirts. Overall though I consider myself Goth by heart.
Just as goths now dont dress like in the 80s i dont think goths have to listen to the foundational bands all the time
My mom was called & considered Goth/Gothic in the 60s! & Punk was a term in 50s even. In fact she was first called a beatnik Punk in the early 60s. Then got into the long flowy dresses. So when I was born in 1970 I was a true Baby Bat! Loved it & stuck with all my variables 53 years!
So a lot of this goes further back. All must know- There are no set rules! Are so many blend overs- has been "that" look long before that part of Black Metal EVEN. Mind all The Originators, Venom (UK-70s+) did not wear makeup!
Yet there were some that were wearing that style in the 60s. Do your research people and don't jump and believe every bit you read online. Wear, listen & belive whatever you want! Listen to your heart & F the sheeps! Cheerz!
No one brings up beatniks. I see a big connection between goth and the beats. Literature being a big one. A lot of goths are drawn to literature as well as music and write poetry, etc. Beats were too. My mom wore dark eyeliner with white lipstick. Proto-goth!
I was in to goth back in the 90's as a kid in school (never dressed up as much as you two). Nowadays I haven't listened to that much music other than classical and or smooth jazz usually moody and or melancholic. I am into the dark and grim of the macabre tales and stories.. One of my favorite quotes is from the creator of the Addams family “Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly.” Charles Addams.
Back in the 90's I could not get away from the goth title. Nowadays I don't believe I would be called a goth. anybody reading this, would you consider me a goth?

I would consider you a goth, typically if you were maybe just dressing in black and liking dark and morbid stories then yeah I'd say you were a goth! I'm almost 18 and only really been into goth culture for about 3 years, although it was kinda frowned upon for me. I'm either emo or I'm Mall goth, I'm not sure.

First, absolutely yes, the wikiHow articles and how-to articles in general should definitely become a series.
Second, I like Slipknot as well, and also know that they are a metal band, and a pretty hardcore one at that. Someone tells me "You know Slipknot isn't a goth band, right?" I would respond (as a growl) "I would have never known that if it wasn't for that oh, so obvious insight." No, I'm not nice when people are rude.

I prefer black clothing myself but seeing other goths in bright colors like cyber goth is super cool.
I’m a Christian and dress ‘normal’ but goth fashion still has a place in my heart and I still get a little dopamine boost from listening to the goth music I grew up with. I consider myself ‘part-goth/secretly goth’ because it’s looking like those things will never die
Oh, please do a thrifty DIY video! Love stuff like that! Some of my favourite pieces were from thrift stores. There was this amazing long, black cotton velvet coat that I wore to literal rags. I changed out the boring black buttons for cool big silver ones & they made it *pop.* The thing came to my ankles. Another item was a wonderfully-aged, ancient silk top hat that I still have. Very few hats fit me 'cuz I have a small head & this fits *perfectly.* One of the best pieces is the *real* prosthetic glass eye I found in a terrible tin wire-wrap that I re-wrapped in gold-fill wire into one of my favourite rings that I now wear almost everywhere.

You can be both! Jesus was a pretty alternative messiah after all. His aesthetic was human sacrifice. Washed and redeemed by the blood of The Lamb!
I'm a metalhead but I like goth music and sometimes dresses like one aswell, do what you like fuck what people say. The thing I hate is when they say their Goth or a metalhead but don't listen to the music
I was listening to almost exclusively goth music back in the eighties (we called it gothic music back then) and I also listened to lots of dark wave, new wave, punk, industrial, and edm. I don’t remember there being a focus on calling ourselves goth back then. We just listened to great music and dressed in ways that reflected our music tastes and the subculture we were a part of. I never called myself goth, and none of my friends did either, but if you saw pictures of me back then, you would definitely call me goth. I still love the music and listen to it all the time. And I love the style. It’s interesting to hear that I was, indeed goth after all!
Very interesting article, and even though not complete in some ways, I think it is helpful to people questioning themselves. On the first point, I have been that way, but in reverse, I would say. I don't live near any Goth people and have been really lonely even though I started being Goth around 20 years ago, in the last 4 or 5 years, I tried very hard not to be Goth because I was so lonely and have gotten tired of people judging me, saying mean things; and not having friends. My son actually introduced me to Goth, but he isn't any longer, having chosen to be Viking in pretty much every way; so that makes me even more lonely, and he is married living away from me. I like many many types of music, along with quite a few various types of Goth music. So what I did was pretty much quite listening to the music accept occasionally, and stopped wearing any clothes that looked Goth. I would get upset watching people on TH-cam who are Goth, and even seeing someone wearing black in town, even though they were not technically Goth; because I missed it. I tried wearing all pink quite a few times and totally distancing myself from anything Goth. However, I have been sooo sad and felt like I wasn't being who I really am. I would run home and change clothes back to Goth and secretly listen to some of my music. I just recently decided that I just have to be myself even though I'm lonely and no one understands me. So it can go both ways, trying not to be Goth when you are, or trying to be something just because it's cool, and you may see other people doing it. On the statement about what are you if you like Gothic clothes but not the music; I've always thought it was just good to say you are Darkly Inclined instead of Goth. What do you think?
Great video. :) I used to be a member of one goth web community in the 2000's and really many people there were gatekeepers. So they tried to get rid of all the people who just loved the goth clothes and other goth aesthetics but did't listen goth music. And they had actual lists of the true goth bands to listen, mostly from 1980's. So if you didn't like any of the true goth bands you were a poser. Great thing that you are more sane people than those goths were.
When I was a teen I listened symphonic metal and symphonic black metal and I loved goth style so I was not able to find any online friends from that and other gatekeeper goth sites.
Theyre just dumb. I was a goth and liked gothic music but i preferred classical music and symphonic metal too. I was focused on dark art, cementeries, gothic literature and philosophy and lots of theology. Just because goth has origins on music doesnt mean that it sould be the thing that makes you be in or out of the community because music has evolved a lot. Goth music is very 80s but theres plenty of music styles that display the same philosophy. Most films considered gothic dont even have gothic soundtracks. I think its basic to know and be connected with gothic origins but gatekeeping just because we prefer other types of music for me is a bit stupid.
i didnt know post punk was goth! i love post punk. i listen to dark wave- love dark wave. but i listen to post punk a lot more...didnt know that was goth 🤘🏽

Hey, thanks for the Fantastic video!!! I have to admit that I was a trad Goth back in the early 80's, My Father managed a couple television stations / Radio Stations and used to bring home albums from artists that were not played by the stations (Top 40 and Country), as such I was introduced to Siouxsie & The Banshees, Bauhaus, The Cure, Joy Division / New Order, The Birthday Party, Modern English and others early in my teens. By the time I hit High School in 1982 there was a small clique of like minded "freaks" of which I was an off and on member (unlike them I played Canadian Football, Rugby and Hockey etc. things frowned upon by the group) When I turned 18 we used to drive into Edmonton to see a band called Darkroom, they made it kind of big as the lead singer did the theme and acted in the TV show The Little Vampire (He played Lumpy) as well as Darkroom had a fair sized hit called "In Dim Light" *note both my parents and eventually me, all worked in local Television* I saw them live several times including TV productions for local broadcasts of the band. Eventually I fell into work life and while I still followed all my favourite bands the years of giant hair, dyed hair, black clothes gave way to the Alternative scene of the late 80's and early 90's that became grunge. I still consider myself Goth but I wouldn't say I'm an "Elder" Goth or anything so bold. I do really admire folks like you who embraced the life fully from makeup and fashion to the decor of your home, and your channel is superb, I am now a subscriber! As for Darkroom, last I heard Jim Gray (Singer) was living in London producing and still creating music under his own name, and the rest of the band have retreated into the dusty woodwork from whence they came, lol in other words, I have no idea where they are now. Thanks for the real deal Goth channel, and not some dance club kids with attitude that seems to permeate this platform, not all mind you, but a fair number who wouldn't know Simon Gallup, or Steven Severin if they came up and said "Hi" to them on the street, oh and I play bass in a Twitch community for Goths, Industrial music, and Alternative music fans. The channel is Nicki Tedesco and even if you don't play bass it's generally a riot of a time! She's working on her 4th album currently so we are on a hiatus right now but she does a stream once a month or so right now and normally she's on once, or twice a week. I wasn't a Goth as such in the 80's but definitely Gothic in fashion tastes, into vampires and horror and dressed that way, fishnets, black lacy dresses, boots, bright red lipstick heavy mascara and eyeliner
Thanks for going through the article! Very interesting piece. I ended up reading it again and there is some useful info here. I agree that it's important to note that people shouldn't force themselves into a box, especially with alternative subcultures, and this article did a decent job of explaining this point. As a Catholic Goth I was guilty of pigeonholing myself in my baby bat days and stressing too much over whether I can be a Christian and goth at the same time. Turns out both my Faith and the subculture compliment each other so well!

I definitely got a mixed perception about being goth when I was younger. I had a friend who was adament about goths behaving and looking a very specific way. But I was always weird and unique with my style of dress and even my hair style. Always attracted to dark themes, dark music and anything dark really. So funnily enough, I grew into being gothic rather than growing out of it like most of the other goth kids at my boring country town highschool. Lol
I have been goth a long time I my self wear all black I love it it's spooky and beautiful I mix up with different kinds of lace fishnet etc for the most I love the music gothic rock, dark wave,cold wave, death rock,post punk are my favorite genres.
You guys are the sweetest couple on TH-cam and I'm so thrilled to have found your channel! There are very few goths in my community, and though I felt like a poser for not dressing in enough goth esthetic, the music has always been my solace. I love my bauhaus band t-shirts, till death do us part!

I love goth, industrial, metal, punk, new wave, disco, EDM, and just plain ol' rock n roll. I even listen to country music from time to time. I enjoy dressing in many gothic styles, incorporating mostly trad and nu goth styles. I started with the punk style in the late 70s as a teen, and still wear some of that style today. I'm a multi-faceted person. I consider myself as alternative rather than goth exclusively. I do DIY many of my own clothes, and have for years. I like making unique clothes that no one else has. I never really intentionally tried on the goth look but I was always fascinated by it. I'm goth friendly at least and I love how unapologetically present yourselver inside out.
But yeah... Sisters of Mercy, Type O Negative, VNV Nation and so on... I'm into those things. And I've read Nemi comics.
I have started to use makeup to do new romantic goth, yeah I was in the 1980s. For lipstick I found a lip sealer by one of the cosmetic companies on Amazon. You can drink and Vape but if you eat, do it all over again. Thank you for your TH-cam channel, it helps a lot and yes Goth is Goth, never a hater but always hated. Darkness is nice and warm.
I think it's still a good idea to thrift and DIY. Unfortunately, there are plenty of goths out there like myself who are poor or have budget. Thankfully, I have my local flea market to help me out. And once in a while, I find myself at a thrift store. These days because of the amount of clothes I've gotten over the years, I don't have to worry about that stuff at the moment.

I've always had an attraction to goth fashion and looks, and some of the music I enjoy is goth music though my primary music are various genres of metal. I can't do goth looks or any alt fashion other than quick pictures due to work, so what I do is just listen to my music and stick to what kind of fashion is accepted at work and out in my super conservative area. I may not fall into the goth subculture, but I really like your take on whether someone is a true goth or not, and you two are awesome! Subscribed!
Depending on who you ask, Goth is: Fashion, art, poetry, dancing, DIY, decor, and music. I'm glad this list is just for laughs, and not to be taken seriously. Remember what the Goth Couple said: stay true to yourself. Embrace the subculture in a way that aligns with your lifestyle, values & personality ...and don't following the herd.

Ok ok OK. the first step of this article made my brain glitch because after a decade I've been trying to be less associated with goth (I'm just very disappointed with my local community, it's legitimately full of pred4tors and seriously massively delusional people) BUT I CAN NOT DO IT. I can't because the moment I buy something not black i end up reselling it. Can't really detach from the music (I wasn't planning on doing that anyways but I'm just massively uninterested in other music communities at this moment, even like metal), basically it turns out that that's who I am and there's no way I can remove it from my life by force 😤 so like if you wanna know if you're REALLY a goth then wait for a decade and see what happens
I did abandon the community tho and listen by the cure by myself like an edgy teenager, but seriously it's a horrible bunch of people that no sane person would like to be around

Im a Good Ol Boy from Kentucky, Blue collar career, traditional values and devout Christian. I feel a greater sense of belonging within the "Goth" community. I feel so accepted within this community.
Awesome, this was a lovely video. I don’t look goth at all but have always loved goth since I was a teenager in the eighties. My view has always been it was very inclusive and non judgmental. You are also right that goths didn’t just wear black back in the day.

I would love to attend a goth festival, but unfortunately, there are none where I live (state of Arizona, USA). The closest club to me is in downtown Prescott called The Attic, which is only open on Fridays and Saturdays. They do feature live bands, some goth some not. Local bands. Another venue is Prescott Public House, they have a DJ after 10pm who mostly plays rap and EDM. I spend a few hours at each place every Saturday night. I run into many friends at each place and dance a lot, usually alone. My husband used to go with me, but he passed away in June of 2022. (Jan Griffiths).

I would say that the Victorian stuff comes from thrifting 70s fashion. No one wanted old clothes in the 80s. But much was 70s Victorian clothes like calf boots, flowy dresses, handmade items, hats. So it did come from musician but also cast off thrift store clothes. :)
