Hello Kathryn - that is a fantastic question. 🙂 Heddles are used with larger tapestry looms. On very small looms, it's easy to use a weaving needle to go over and under each warp thread, but on a wider loom, that gets tedious. Heddles make every other warp thread go up or down.
