@@PreachMooreComedy That's unfortunate and has nothing to do with Venus and Serena. The film is not a biography of Richard's life. The film is a "thank you" from Venus and Serena to their father for getting them to where they are today.

This movie was nothing but lies and deceit. Richard was not a hero or someone who should be looked up to. Is he responsible for his daughters success? Absolutely that throughout movie they refused to acknowledge that Richard had an entire family and 5 other children before he met and married Serena & Venus mom. Richard completely abandoned, ignored and neglected all of his other 5 children, he was never in their lives so when Serena and Venus became famous, it was confusing because Richard made it out as if that was his only family. After years of contacting their estranged father he continued to ignore them and still to this day has no relationship with him. This movie made him look honorable, a hero, a martyr for the black community when he really is just low life deadbeat.

Aunjanue Ellis who played his wife and Jon Bernthal the tennis coach are more worthy Oscar winners than Will Smith because their performances had less flaws than Will Smith. Thanks for mentioning the weird “Will Smith talking like a slave” thing, I noticed that in the trailer. ETA: Korey mentioned it as a joke, and I think Will Smith sounded a bit overdone on the southern accent in the trailer.
I mean it’s not really a slave thing I’m in the south and that’s how old black people speak in south speak, he kinda got it mixed with the accent to probably make it feel like he’s playing a character than sounding like will smith cause will smith changes a real life character and make it feel like the character is will smith lol

Lol. If people actually heard slave accent….you would know that’s not the accent that’s being portrayed. When Korey makes the comment he is just joking but Martin and korey know it’s not an actual slave accent. Just jokes.
I am genuinely interested in seeing this film. For years it's seems as though Hollywood delights in dumping on Father's and father figures. And judging by the trailer, here is a guy willing to do what it takes so his daughters can realize their dreams.
This easily could’ve been a Cool Runnings-style of movie. I’m glad the filmmakers didn’t go down that route, but it does have slight echoes of Bring it On and British Olympics flick Fast Girls, starring the Sista from No Time to Die and that white lass from Baby Driver/Downton Abbey.
Slave Talk is very offensive, it's very much a cultural thing as southern people migrated from the south to the west, midwest and north, but snooty, bougie young people especially black young people, forget or don't understand the complexities of culture. The same goes for the colorism issue, but I'm old so...
If he doesn't get an oscar for this idk what will. He might get the decaprio treatment where he gets overlooked or put up against other great actors. This was a fantastic movie and very inspirational! It was mom and dad sacrificing everything for their child to have a better life and become the venus/serena dynasty.
Skin color was not a controversy only for colorists Black people was it an issue. It’s all about performance and acting. White people don’t see a difference between dark and light they see Black regardless of skin tone. Denzel Washington wasn’t light like Malcolm X but he did a good performance
Lol I literally watched the movie because Will Smith is in. I didn't know the plot, never cared for tennis let alone sports, but I genuinely enjoyed the movie
I think as far as the racism aspect. 2 of the reasons they may not have played a big part in this film is 1. This movie is set in the 90’s, not the 70’s. . And 2. Because Venus and Serena practically grew up IN country clubs so I’m sure they have more fond memories with white people than bad/racist memories. Serena even married a white guy. If I can recall, when I grew up most of the disparaging remarks made about them, especially their appearance and features, came from black men.
I'm not trying to be contrarian but growing up I'd only heard positive things about Venus and Serena from black men myself included. I've heard second hand about other groups calling them manish and such but I wasn't there to confirm it.
If it was meant to be a biography that would have made sense, but it wasn't. So there was no need to do that. Regardless of whatever happened with his first family ...it still doesn't change the narrative of the achievements of Venus and Serena. That's the point. You can play this game with almost anyone. Who is perfect? No one. Who doesn't have skeletons in their closet? No one. Do the bad things a person does (excluding murder/rape/domestic violence/abuse) negate the good things they do in life? Both can be true...for example...no one ever said Richard was a great husband (not even to the wife in the film). But that's not the focus either. I mean...if you really want to go there...we don't really get a great sense even in the film of the relationship he had with his three stepchildren. We assume it was OK. Without giving away spoilers - the biggest scene was the one between him looking out for one of the stepdaughters at the tennis court. Again, the main point of the film is about who he was for Venus and Serena. This is their tribute to their dad.
The movie was more than an underdog theme. It was more about family. How Richard was different from what he was portrayed to be. It also wasn't about Venus and Serena. It was a film about him. The mention of his outside life is true. It was mentioned to show he was a flawedman. Not make him some idealized hero. Check interviews by the coach Rick Maccio. He confirms that Richard never forced his kids. He actually talks about how good of a father he was to the girls. He believed in him and those girls. He knew the potential to change the sport. Open stance technique and athleticism. Coach Maccio also said that Richard told him that there will be a biopic about him. And they would call it "King Richard". It's om TH-cam.
I don't get the colorism arguement, Denzel played Malcom X, Angela Basset played Tina Turner and their performances were great. Will Smith was made for this role.
Because of Richard Williams and Venus and Serena, the formerly super white sport of women's tennis in the US is looking more like the NBA. (Shout out to Althea Gibson, who did her thing decades before.) Sloane Stephens, Taylor Townsend, Madison Keys, Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka - when Gauff defeated Venus at Wimbledon, she told her, "I wouldn't be here without you". Leonard Francois, Osaka's father, followed Richard's playback page by page, and now Osaka is the richest player on the circuit. My only criticism of the film is that it left out all the racist abuse hurled at the sisters over the years, which continues to this day. But it's a terrific, entertaining film.
The fact they acting like fathers didn’t have whole other families and kids is laughable I’m not saying it’s right but let’s be honest that’s how he was. Why did they need to dwell on him having other kids we all know it’s hard when you’re not staying together
The Oscars mean nothing. That institution has shown in the recent years that they have a vehement aversion to successful black stories. This film is too good to for the Oscars.
Yeah. Denzel Washington was a miscast for Malcolm X (1992), seeing that the real El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz was light skinned, but Washington's performance overshadowed this fact. I don't think that Smith's performance achieves the same thing that Denzel Washington's performance achieved. Just my opinion.
You know will smith is going to win that Oscar. Richard started making me angry during parts of the movie. You know what you can't argue with the results he achieved the goals he set out with venus and serena
Being a skeptical black man. I got to say I really wish they would have focused on Venus and Serena more in this movie than Will Smith as their dad. A lot of the movie show that the dad did a lot of work. But if you realize after 2002 it was the mom's name on all the coaching cards. And that's the issue that I have with this movie. To be honest with you I think the biopic is starting to die off.
this movie ends in 94 eight years before the mom took over serena and venus literally made this movie as a love letter to their dad and to highlight the importance of black fatherhood seems like youre kinda missing the point wanting it to be about the girls
True story. I hated Jon Bernthal because of all the negative roles he portrayed. I was thinking to myself like, please show me a role where he’s normal or at least nice cause I don’t wanna hate an actor based off his roles. And then this showed up. Lol
He left like 6 kids and started a new family. Then, one of his daughters saw him with Venus and Serena and he gave his old daughter a fake phone number. Bruh was wild.
There was no need to tell that story. What does that have to do with Venus and Serena? Do you take on everything that ever happened with your parents? Good, bad and ugly...is that supposed to be your issue? Are you supposed to hate your father now?
@Lisa Cox My dad never left 6 kids behind, Lisa. Or should I say, Richard? Why do you care so much I'm just stating facts 🤷. If you're gonna do a biography be honest. Have a good day Richard. PS your kids miss you🙎🏿♀️🙎🏿♀️🙎🏿♀️🙎🏿🙎🏿🙎🏿
@@FREESMH why do YOU care so much he was a good dad to venus and serena thats what this is about why are so many people just wanting this movie to shit on him for making bad choices
I personally think, Will's portrayal of Richard Williams, speaking the way he dose, makes me wonder if it was Will's way, of conveying how or he was viewed in the circles they where playing in, also using it to be underestimated.
Will got it very close. I've met and spoke with Mr. Williams. He is totally kinda stooped over, but the trick is he is still a mountain of a man. Still like 6'3. He looks like a former sharecropper. It is what it is.
(Guys I know this movie isn’t about the sisters, my comment is in response to Korey’s criticism of the film not showing the extent of racism that King Richard went through in irl. My point, is that at least the movie showed a bit of it, seems as though the film didn’t show the sisters struggling with racism at all) I mean forget King Richard, this film doesn’t really show any of the anti-Black racism & bias that Serena & her sister experienced growing up as youth in the tennis-community. Much less the discrimination that Serena especially faced when she grew into a woman, in her current years of her professional career. The racism Black women, & in this case darker skinned Black girls face. Misogynior, hair discrimination, & adultification etc
Charlamange tha God would see this performance from the great actor Will Smith and still say that Jada is at the same level……. 🤨 the man must be out of his damn mind!!

Richard Williams is the greatest coach in tennis history and all this review did was slander him. And the worst thing is, it’s a black man doing it. He actually has no idea what Richard Williams went through and if he did he would understand why he acted the way he did in the movie.

They probably should have got Idris Elba to do the role imo and hes a better actor.
True and he is darker skinned like richard williams.
Then people would’ve been complaining because he’s not American
I can’t unsee him as the father from Daddy’s Little Girl now. 😂
I won’t watch this movie with Will, but I would have for Idris! 😍
Where are you from?
Will did a good job
Whats it called on youtube ?
I don't get the colorism arguement, Denzel played Malcom X, Angela Basset played Tina Turner and their performances were great. Will Smith was made for this role.
Will Smith was made for the father of the Williams sisters?
Yea Denzel is way darker than malcom x was but most the time it's the opposite.
This is nowhere near as bad as Zoe Saldana playing Nina Simone… that was shameful! Will pulled it off right
Where's our gray beard Korey.....bring it back,,!!! please lol
I'll definitely will check it out for the inspiration factor alone. Would love to hear your review on Netflix Colin's Black & White mini-series.
I hope not the NBA is becoming unwatchable
The fact they acting like fathers didn’t have whole other families and kids is laughable I’m not saying it’s right but let’s be honest that’s how he was. Why did they need to dwell on him having other kids we all know it’s hard when you’re not staying together
The Oscars mean nothing. That institution has shown in the recent years that they have a vehement aversion to successful black stories. This film is too good to for the Oscars.
I could see Idris Elba playing his part
True
I think I’ve seen just about every video for the past 5 years. You guys are so underrated 🔥
CAN WE PLS GIVE AUNJANUE HER JUST DO SHE DESERVES THE AWARDS
Not the will skirt pushed his daddy down the steps lol 😂 12-5-21
Lol
there was quite a bit of commentary that didn't have anything to do with the movie itself, Looking forward to seeing it
Man I was sooo interested in how they’d deal with his other family. Pretty bummed they left it out
He left like 6 kids and started a new family.
I think this is his Oscar movie.
I saw the movie yesterday it was a good film.
I personally think, Will's portrayal of Richard Williams, speaking the way he dose, makes me wonder if it was Will's way, of conveying how or he was viewed in the circles they where playing in, also using it to be underestimated.
he really talked like that look at interviews
Will Smith does great! Aunjanae Ellis did great too!
Will got it very close. I've met and spoke with Mr. Williams. He is totally kinda stooped over, but the trick is he is still a mountain of a man. Still like 6'3. He looks like a former sharecropper. It is what it is.
I’m not a particular fan of tennis, but this movie was solid
I'm betting that its gonna be his Oscars clip
When are you guys going to do the last duel? Reviews are surprisingly really good for it
Martin talked about it briefly on one stream and that was it. Martin gave it a high matinee I believe
Months later? Probably not.
Looks that Oscar is finally coming to Will. Great film!
Exactly, I felt everything was happening too easy... Which I'm sure in real life wasn't the case
The movie is not about them. It’s about their dad
Can't wait for Encanto next :)
I wonder if Cory will do a arcane review since the series has finished
Not happening
@@ragarcon It happened.
Curious: which bio pics you thought took a totally different approach as you said?
He looks like an old Mike Tyson @ 0:45
Charlamange tha God would see this performance from the great actor Will Smith and still say that Jada is at the same level……. 🤨 the man must be out of his damn mind!!
i feel Will got the most Will in that dining room talk scene with the wife.
Other than that..mostly, I think Will does have a good shot at a best actor award win this year. if Russell Crowe can win an Oscar best actor for playing, basically, Russell Crowe..i think the Fresh Prince deserves it.
Finally y’all did this! Will getting an Oscar off this
We's gon' play sum tennis! 😆 Loved the movie but Will was just slightly overboard here and there.
Putting the ads 10 minutes into the review so we can't fast forward it.. thanks guys
Venus & Serena had 3 other sister but I believe the oldest was killed many years ago
yes in 2010 in a shooting in compton
Will been collecting some Ls lately on social media. It’s good to see a W
His wife blew her back out
For 20 million a movie give me them L’s and fuck the Oscars🤣
Korey "I Won't Take Long To Say What I Have To Say" Coleman
Kind of expected them to say something about Richard's other family
Seems like its applauding tiger dads to me. How many serena's and venus out there didn't make it had to grow up with hard dads like richard.
Will smith should absolutely win best actor. I don’t wanna be reminded of the assholes that bullied me my whole life so I just won’t watch power of the dog but will watch this movie plenty of times this year alone.
Nah, Andrew Garfield’s gonna get that Oscar for tick, tick… boom
Cue to TELL THE TRUUFFFPPF moment
Great review fellas 👍😂.
Richard Williams is the greatest coach in tennis history and all this review did was slander him. And the worst thing is, it’s a black man doing it. He actually has no idea what Richard Williams went through and if he did he would understand why he acted the way he did in the movie.
4:00 now thats a load of bull!
Why be a King....when he can be a legend....no no no Robot Exterminator....no wait Psycho Path Playboy Cop Heroe....A man with No Fear....A man with a Pursuit of Happiness....no actually A hero that help save the Universe from Alien....lol I can go all day like Steve Rodgers said
If Will Smith could play Venus and Serena he would’ve.
Will Smith is one of my favorite actors. But I think Denzel could have done this movie as well.
They lied about Freddy Mercury who had aids and slept with a lot of men unprotected. Equally Steve Jubs rejected his daughter from his old girlfriends. Yet both men are adored and Biopics were Oscar worthy. No one is perfect but we have few good men who can do anything.
