His slap completely upended what should’ve been one of his greatest moments in one of the most successful movie star careers of the last 30 years….

@@deanshine5201 THANK YOU! The slap is so dumb. Will has deserved an Oscar for awhile now & now that he has it, I’m happy for him. If people want to hold that mess over his head, then it is what it is. However, let us not forget a lot of people in that room or who have been in the room have done a lot worse. One is sitting in prison right now.

    In another life...
Will Smith, with his everlasting charisma jumped into the stage, with his characteristic energy. He hugged Samuel L. Jackson making a joke to his ear that we will never get to know, they laughed as Uma gave him his diserved Oscar.
He held it into the sky. He thanked his wife and children, he thanked Richard Williams and his family, he thanked his friends in the industry and the public that supported him through all of these years. We were reminded of his origins in "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and how many considered him overdue. He made one last joke like only he knows how to do it. Then he left happy, with the biggest achievement of his career in his hand, and a Will Smith renaissance incoming.
That's how it went in another life.

I loved the new set up. So elegant and the way they framed the winners was beautiful. Having said that, I agree that the set up contributed somehow to Will Smith psychology in that it was close to reach, whereas high stairs it would have been more intimidating and self conscious as well as self reflective of his own actions as it takes an effort to go up there. Also it invites more respect to whoever is up there. Also the usual stadium seating would have been more difficult as it would break a pattern if Will stood up. Or even like last years, tables in front of them would have made the actors feel somewhat protected and a longer effort to stand up. But Will Smith was given vip seats on the front, their own separate space and they were OPEN and exposed to everything on stage. The special treatment encouraged him as well. It doesn't justify him though. It was a beautiful elegant set up but a free range for Will's fragile psychology at the time.

I saw King Richard. It was a great movie and Will Smith portrayed Richard Willians to perfection. I also remember watching some tennis games as a kid so I knew of Venus Williams. It's just a shame that what happened....happened before Will Smith won his Oscar for best actor in King Richard. I knew of Aunjanue Ellis before that movie though. The first time I saw Aunjanue was in the biopic about Ben Carson which starred Cuba Gooding Jr

A lot has been made about those present who stood up when Smiths name was called. But the ovation was one of the shortest for an acting winner in recent years - even Casey Affleck got a longer ovation. Also I think a lot of people got to their feet in order to make a run for it in case the guy went full psycho again.

  • @Dennisanyone-

Good thing Frances McDormand last years leading actress winner didn’t show up she would’ve refused to give him the award after the way he conducted himself. This clip will be here forever, and when we look back on it, hopefully by that time Smith will have gotten the help he needs. He will forever be associated with this night and his horrible behavior, and every time he looks at that award he will remember the assault. How can people stand for this man, and how could he be not taken out of that theater? You choose the behavior you choose the consequences, so at least he got some comeuppance via the Academys 10 year ban. But the Smith up there on screen, the facade he took years to cultivate is dead and gone. I think it was a run of the mill performance, but he was well liked (that all has changed), third nomination, and has made a lot of money for the industry. So what’s done is done.

Academy, next year we want to see all the 23 awards during the broadcast, great movies are what they are because there're very talented people that work very hard, especially off-camera and sadly they don't receive the amount of recognition that they deserve. I feel so sad and sorry for all the workers that worked for a lifetime dreaming of one day winning an oscar and when the moment finally comes, they'd their speeches cut off from the live transmission.

This is Will Smith's third Oscar nomination(all nominations in the Best Actor category) and his first win. He swept this award season winning the Golden Globe Award, the SAG Award, the Critics Choice Award, the BAFTA Award and the Academy Award for Best Actor. Not considering the slap, he actually deserved this win. Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Andrew Garfield have been nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor twice and I really hope they could win the Academy Award for Best Actor in the future.
