It’s also ironic he talks about having to deal with embarrassment and having to continue on…something Chris had to do because of his little moment of anger.

I agree. I've seen both performances and Garfield gave a career defining one. But I would have been ok with either nominee winning except for Smith. (and not just because of the incident, but because in my opinion it wasn't the best performance, he won because he was overdue).
I don’t want to assume your that you’re religious but in what we believe, this is work of the devil. Anger and grudges is all coming from the devil, and I am proud of will for being able to admit that what he did was evil. Saying that it’s work of the devil does not mean he’s putting the blame on him. It’s still his fault for not holding back and he did already say that you need to smile and act like everythings okay. @Charles Irving believe me, anything that celebrities do isn't a factor in my life. the chances of will smith's actions "overtaking" me are non existent. while i think what he did was foolish, self sabotage, i really don't care otherwise.
Yet it didn't happened. Perhaps the fact that he was not allowed to participate in future Oscar activities may have been good enough to sanction him. Heck, even dirty and terrible people with sexual misconduct like Kevin Spacey, Roman Polanski and Harvey Weinstein didn't have their Oscars returned, and so what's the point of this argument???
I have two questions: 1 - Why didn't Frances Mcdormand present Oscars? 2 - With Smith expelled from the Academy, who will present the best actress category next year?
@@kipwalker3455 That's the question, since most of previous Best Actress winners usually tend to present the Best Actor category and its declaration of that win of a category, every Oscar ceremony. So, probably, this has either got to do with Frances Mcdormand's personal decision or the Academy's decision.
I assume that Frances was busy. As for who gives it out next year, probably some Hollywood veteran will be given the honor. Maybe they can convince Jack Nickleson or Daniel Day Lewis.
I was always wondering when Will Smith would win an Oscar. He did for King Richard. But it left a bad taste in my mouth after what happened BEFORE he won the award.

Those who have exhibited worse behaviour, haven’t done it on the Oscars stage on Live TV! It's just a shame that what happened....happened before Will Smith won his Oscar for best actor in King Richard. I knew of Aunjanue Ellis before that movie though. The first time I saw Aunjanue was in the biopic about Ben Carson which starred Cuba Gooding Jr
@@edkeatonI saw that movie but I didn't know that it was Aunjanue Ellis. Another movie couple would be Lawrence Fishburne and Angela Bassett. First in What's Love Got To Do With It, then in Boyz N The Hood and then Akeelah and the Bee.

4:48 Denzel warned him. What he said could not have been more true. Even though his action was uncalled for, I still highly respect this man. I'm glad his speech was uploaded.
What bothers me is that it's evident that Will Smith only won this Oscar because of his career as a whole and not because of the movie itself, King Richard Is Good But No Masterpiece. My supporters were for Benedict Cumberbatch or even Andrew Garfield. 🏆🙁🙁🙁
that beginning though, I literally thought I'm having a stroke or something, just clicking on a video and boom there's Samuel L. Jackson yelling around, that music and that dance going on
A lot has been made about those present who stood up when Smiths name was called. But the ovation was one of the shortest for an acting winner in recent years - even Casey Affleck got a longer ovation. Also I think a lot of people got to their feet in order to make a run for it in case the guy went full psycho again.
Good thing Frances McDormand last years leading actress winner didn’t show up she would’ve refused to give him the award after the way he conducted himself. This clip will be here forever, and when we look back on it, hopefully by that time Smith will have gotten the help he needs. He will forever be associated with this night and his horrible behavior, and every time he looks at that award he will remember the assault. How can people stand for this man, and how could he be not taken out of that theater? You choose the behavior you choose the consequences, so at least he got some comeuppance via the Academys 10 year ban. But the Smith up there on screen, the facade he took years to cultivate is dead and gone. I think it was a run of the mill performance, but he was well liked (that all has changed), third nomination, and has made a lot of money for the industry. So what’s done is done.

On one hand, it's really wonderful to see WS finally winning an Oscar after all these years. On the other hand is Chris Rock's face.
He heard the joke, got up, walked all the way towards Chris and slapped him. He could've stopped anytime. That wasn't "a moment of impulsive violence". That was a straight b*tch move.

He’s a great action star.
this how you overshadow your biggest career moment.
The Fresh Prince FINALLY won his long awaited Oscar, though I reckon that we'd all like to pretend that it was the only time he'd graced the stage that evening.
If it wasn’t for the slap, this would’ve actually feel earned
Will Smith became the first rapper to win an acting Oscar, 33 years after he became the first musician to win a Grammy for rap music.
@@jwelch5742 no he isn't the first rapper. Jamie Foxx and Mahershala Ali both won Oscars before Will Smith.
@@joeybaseball7352 Well, that's a fact right there.
@Joey Baseball wow you think Jamie Foxx was a rapper ? How foolish of you. R&B isn’t rap goofy. !!!! Only a white Person would say that and Ali was a wannabe rapper. He never has any studio albums
I feel kinda sorry for him. Will is probably one of the biggest actors we know and this was his FIRST Oscar and none of that mattered in that moment because of that slap. I just think it’s so crazy, this was this man’s most important moment probably a moment he’s dreamed about forever and you can hear in his voice and just everyone’s face that they know it doesn’t matter and the world won’t remember that night for him winning his first Oscar. It’s also ironic he talks about having to deal with embarrassment and having to continue on…something Chris had to do because of his little moment of anger.
Why would u feel sorry for this spineless bastard ? It was his own actions! No one forced him to slap Chris! I Hope will keeps getting humiliated
i mean i dont feel sorry for him because he CHOSE to slap chris, he brought this on himself. yes its sad that no one will ever rmemeber this because everyone will only remember the slap, but it also took away from all the other winners that night bc all the attention was on wills slap. i dont even know who else one, everything was abt wills slap. he brought this on himself so he deserves the outcome
Some things I notice rewatching this and looking closely
•Diane Warren isn’t clapping
•Andrew Garfield’s smile when Will won seems strained
•Jason Momoa half-heartedly clapping
Yikes 😬
I know people will disagree with me, but I think Andrew Garfield should have won! He was amazing in "Tick, Tick...Boom!" as the late, great Jonathan Larson!
This guy gets it!
I fully agree
He didn't win a single other award for his role all season, but you think he deserved Will's Oscar. The delusion is real.

I agree. I've seen both performances and Garfield gave a career defining one. But I would have been ok with either nominee winning except for Smith. (and not just because of the incident, but because in my opinion it wasn't the best performance, he won because he was overdue).
Exactly, His performance in Tick Tick Boom was amazing like really good!, I watched King richard but i felt that Andrew deserved it more than Smith
Unbelievable he displaced emotions and blame the devil. He hit a man on the Oscar's. He is not love but hate and dysfunction.
You really can’t let things affect you especially during the oscars.
Harsh and judgy statement right there..
@erinnicole7592 You are correct. Chris Rock was the victim, and Will Smith is the perpetrator.
This was a total rollercoaster 😂
Yep that Oscars night was indeed a rollercoaster. The slap episode and Will Smith winning an award
I can tell Will Smith was having a hard time hiding the fact that he was riding a giant rollercoaster in his mind.
I'm surprised the comment section hasn't been blocked
It's just the Academy's way of letting cowards hiding behind anonymity blow off some steam.
Will clapping the hardest for himself 🤣
I already forget that he won an oscar that night, and it’s not even 1 year ago
I can’t look at a Will Smith movie the same again 😢
Really? What about a Kevin Smith movie, or a Roman Polanski movie or a Harvey Weinstein movie or a Bill Cosby movie? Those 4 men did far worse things than Will did here.
@@isaacbeeby2528 but they didn't do it at the Oscars in live tv. Like it or not Smith tarnished his reputation that night. Many people will not look at him in the same way again.

His Oscar should be returned.
Too bad he didn’t get the nameplate to engraved on his trophy after he won

1:25 Bradley Cooper doesn't even care he's intently stuck on the slap
I have two questions:
1 - Why didn't Frances Mcdormand present Oscars?
2 - With Smith expelled from the Academy, who will present the best actress category next year?
That's a questions to be answered by next year. Let time decide it.
@@ajpat9620 But why didn't Frances return to present since she won last year?

His performance in King Richard was amazing and he deserved the Oscar. We all have done something that was wrong and not proud of (whether it was on camera or not). I hope both men are doing well, mentally.
@@Jsissom74 okay? Chris didn’t press charges so why am I going to dwell on it? People like you want everyone to continue to be upset over this slap. It happened, it’s over. Many people gave their opinion on it and moved on. I wish both men peace.
@Charles Irving Totally disagree. 10 years ago in a verbal argument I splashed water on the other guy. I was arrested and spent a year on probation. The police should have been called, Will should have been led out in handcuffs and charged with a crime. He should have been found guilty and he should have been made to serve the community in manual labor in public. No, it was not. No, he did not.
I was sickened with everyone that was there, they did nothing but gave Will Smith a standing ovation for assaulting Chris Rock on national television, these are the same hypocrites that complain about violence all the time when they virtue signal it but they promote or glorify violence in movies and condone Will Smith’s actions for he did, when they did that, they had lost all credibility and that took away so much from them, they not only condone it but they encourage it, hollywood are spineless and a joke, Chris Rock should had got a standing ovation for handling the situation well and kept his composure!!
I think they were just giving credit where it was due. Incident aside, he earned the award
What a nice gesture of Smith, accepting the Oscar in behalf of Jason Isaacs’ masterful performance in Mass. But why he makes the speech about himself?

Those who have exhibited worse behaviour, haven’t done it on the Oscars stage on Live TV! I saw King Richard. It was a great movie and Will Smith portrayed Richard Willians to perfection. I also remember watching some tennis games as a kid so I knew of Venus Williams. It's just a shame that what happened....happened before Will Smith won his Oscar for best actor in King Richard. I knew of Aunjanue Ellis before that movie though. The first time I saw Aunjanue was in the biopic about Ben Carson which starred Cuba Gooding Jr
Aunjanue Ellis had also played Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s wife in the film, "Men of Honor." (2000).
@@edkeatonI saw that movie but I didn't know that it was Aunjanue Ellis. Another movie couple would be Lawrence Fishburne and Angela Bassett. First in What's Love Got To Do With It, then in Boyz N The Hood and then Akeelah and the Bee.

This would've been the greatest moment in Oscar history if that "slap" never happened.
Pay attention to the background and watch closely : One of the greatest movie makers ever, Denis Villeneuve wasn't standing and wasn't clapping. I respect him for this. Kevin Costner wasn't happy about it too. No one should clap for Smith.

A lot has been made about those present who stood up when Smiths name was called. But the ovation was one of the shortest for an acting winner in recent years - even Casey Affleck got a longer ovation. Also I think a lot of people got to their feet in order to make a run for it in case the guy went full psycho again.
Come on... Stop judging. He made a mistake, like we all do. But he is a humble man, to even recognize it.

Sadly, it seems human beings are quicker to condemn than to forgive.
I’m just curious to know what an accomplished man like Will Smith must have been going through to do what he did.
The way Uma and Sam announced Will Smith’s name as the winner, u just knew Will Smith was gonna get cooked lmao
I do think he went through A LOT during his career. A lot of abuse and mistreatment. And it all overwhelmed him that night.
