    One time Muska came to my dump of a home town and shredded a demo. He even pulled a few of us aside to show off the hydraulics and the sound system in his Escalade, lol it was louder than a Metallica concert in there and he had like 7 screens for the DVD player. The best part was that the dude actually watched me pull off a sick line and gave me some pointers about looking into a sponsorship at my local shop. I think he went to Australia or something after that.

      Honestly , and look this is just my perspective, Chad knew how to use his self generated hype to his advantage.I appreciate that he was a rail chomper, but that's where most of his skill lied, so it didn't surprise me that
      Shorty's team only lasted 3 years, and skaters trip so hard on "Fulfill the Dream", but in that video Smolik destroys and was far ahead of his time, where I saw Muska as just an attention seeker.

    • @VinMetal666

      @@capo_di_capi It's easy to underestimate the level Muska was on at the time. In an Epicly Later'd, Phelps uses Muska as an example how crazy it is some guys never got SOTY - and he knew a thing or two about skating. Watch Anthology and see what kinda shit Muska would do on any given day. That rail stickin out from a banked wall that he 50-50'd first try after filming a whole part in one day is the same wall David Gonzalez got destroyed on in his part that got him SOTY.

    • @rebusd
      @rebusd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The worst possible frontside kickflip is where you land 0 degrees and complete the 180 via g-turn. And that's what everyone seemed to be doing in 92/early 93. Illusion flips were way smoother, and all over the scene by '93 until Mike and Eric raised the bar. At least that's the way I remember it. Nobody I knew even considered the Muska flip a separate trick until well into the millennium.

    I had a very similar up bringing to Muska, Skateboarding was a way to escape my home, the guys I grew up skating with became more of a family to me than my own, I was also involved in crime and recreational drugs, I always looked up to guys like Muska, Stevie Williams, and the Menace boys, they were relatable, I wouldnt encourage any kids to live that kind of lifestyle, but honestly I would change a thing and if it wasn't for my skateboarding family I would probably be dead or in prison for real.

    In my circles, before I quit, my friends and I were doing both the "Muska Flip" style and the "Frontside Flip" style. I referred to the former as a hardflip 180, and I'm kinda surprised that hasn't caught on over the years. Not because I was somehow this massively influential skateboarder, but because it seems like the most appropriate name for the trick.

There's a lot of Gen-Xers and older Millenials, some guys I know personally, that are completely ashamed of their behavior, that with confronted with old evidence of their ignorance, react like politicians to a scandal; Deny, deny, deny, and when the evidence is overwhelming, admit to a tiny bit of it, and then spread the blame around.

    Between part 1 and 2 of this series, this is the most comprehensive look into the life and career of a character I admired since I first saw him in THPS2 as a little kid. Especially gratifying for me because I wore Circas as a kid until I couldn't find them anymore and I still slap a Shorty's sticker on almost every board I own.

    Why the hate on Muska flips?. That’s the only way I can do fs flips. It’s how I learned them. I don’t think it’s any harder to do them down stairs or gaps than a regular fs flip.
