What Happened to Gino Iannucci? Retro Rippers

- Today we're taking a look at the career of Gino Iannucci, the most requested skater for this series. I didn't have much of an appreciation for his skating until doing this. But I had a lot of fun and I learned a lot while working on this one. Enjoy!

Gino has always had the greatest style, imo. His skating looks ridiculously effortless, like he's not even trying while he's actively breaking the laws of physics. Thanks for the hard work on this episode! Much appreciated.
"It's really thick it's really stiff and it's kinda to hard ride 😉" lmao
Im glad i wasnt the only one who saw that. Rad rat you slick devil
@@dxmanforlife he winked immediately after. He wasn't trying to hide the joke you nonce
22:06 don't forget about this one too, and also "That's what she said"
I looked for this comment because I saw it too
Phrasing!
Bro, your channel is so HARDLY appreciated!!! Love it. Thanks for everything you do for skateboarding.
Never wanted to immediately turn off a video more than when he said that his Yeah Right! part was "just okay." I literally broke my VCR rewatching that part.
BushPrintzle I was never a Gino fan, but that was his best part imo.
Dude is not qualified to speak on early 90s skateboarding
@@ericdonalson7276 Yeah Right! came out in 2003 my man.
@@sethmoyer This is true but saying that Gino is okay or just a whatever skateboarder is an a strange opinion.
Gino is overrated
"I don't know why people expect so much" idk maybe its because your're a PROFESSIONAL skater with multiple big name sponsors and a legacy that people care about? In what normal career can you have multiple DWI's, extensive legal trouble, substance abuse issues, and still have people begging you to come back to work? Dude should be grateful, people love him and his style (myself included).
Commenting for the algorithms, love your content bro, you're the skate historian 😎
Commenting for the algorithm
Yeah dude, you rock!
No he's not
comment commennnntn. algo commmmtmtt
All hail and praise....
THE ALGORITHMS
(oh holy algorithms none of us are worthy of your mercy)
as a Long Island skater, it's sick seeing you talk about all the local spots that people used to hit. This video is poppin.
It's weird you didn't talk about his time with Nike, he really helped to push Nike SB forward to make it as successful as it is today. He is one of the first four skaters to have a signature model Nike shoe.
Agreed! He had a ton of Nike ads when they came back with the dunk for SB. I remember a flash Nike web site with a gino puppet you could move the arms around and it would be all goofy. He rocked Nikes way before they broke into the skate market. Its weird but he really is the face of nike sb for me more than anyone else that rides or did ride for them.
snowjerkface Yeah I kinda see that but I still think P Rod is the face of Nike SB. Very few athletes in general are able to gain that much success with Nike.
If you saw most of these spots in person, you would realize how rough and hard to skate they are. The bank to ledge at Stoney Brook is especially gnarly, and a switch noseslide like that is Insane. That Yeah Right part is epic, and if you didn’t start skating in ‘02, and came up skating in the 90’s, you would truly appreciate how gnarly guys like him and Penny were.
The soccer jersey is a jersey from the team Inter Milan, Gino’s father is a first generation Immigrant
Their should have been a skate team of Grosso, Lucero Mariano, and Ianucci and any other Italian skaters that i may have missed and called it something super corny borderline rad like the Good Fellas or The God Fathers or the Resovoir Dogs or some shit lol.
Just want to let you know that as someone who considers themselves a full blown skate nerd, I love what you do. Your videos are well made and informative. Please keep it up Radrat. Sorry, I don't think I know your name . Take care mate!
This is an awesome video! Another legend you should consider to make a video on is John cardiel. I feel that younger skaters have forgotten about him but he deserves to be remembered more.
All hail!
Gino pushing switch mongo looks better that most pros pushing regular.
Wow I remember seeing that Gino cut-out ad welcoming him to the Chocolate fam in Thrasher at that time....dope flashback moment. Great work as always!
I'll add my 2 cents about why I like Gino's skating.
I started in 1992, and I enjoyed the "aesthetic" side of skating....the outfits certain skaters wore, the spots they chose, and the way they looked doing tricks appealed to me more than the magnitude of the trick or the number of stairs they jumped down. To me, Mark Gonzales, Jason Lee, Marc Johnson, Tom Penny, and Gino exemplified this aspect of skating.
I'm a simple man I see Rad Rat upload I click, do a Keenan retro ripper
Simply bad comment
I'm a simple man, that's why I re-post other peoples jokes in order to get likes.
Youre a simple man, unable to come up with an origonal comment.
@@llamov I usually never comment these types of comments, but I just wanted to relate to people that see the Rad Rat new video notification and click on it. Being one of the first people on the video, I just commented this because well... that's what I do, I see a new video notification I click.
@@llamov you're a simple man, making the same joke shortly after I made the joke.
Hey Rad, glad you’re able to start doing these again. Just want to say also I appreciate the objective point of view you keep on things.
Hope all is well!
Gino's been my favorite skater since I discovered him in the 20 shot sequence days.
For me his magic is of course in his style, and the fact that he does relatively 'simple' tricks, but does them superbly at high speed. As a kid that really motivated me: it felt as if I could do some of that stuff! I can see myself do a line with a half-cab noseslide, a backside powerslide and a switch noseslide 270, but I can't even imagine doing a frontside flip down a 15 stair. This made his skating tangible instead of some (be it super impressive) alien thing.
Do this day I want to go out and skate whenever I see Gino footage!
I had a short moment where I thought I owned the 360 shuv to manual 360 shuv to manual. Then I saw Gino do it and I stopped saying it.
That makes a lot of sense. I think a lot of skaters are popular for ‘style’ because average skaters can do many of the same tricks and more easily relate to them.
When you reference him wearing Adidas that was during 20 shot sequence footage. He couldn’t wear axion shoes then b/c they didn’t exist yet 🤓
Was great seeing a Long Islander come up like this. Big fan and bought his boards. Finally met him at Astoria skatepark, shook his hand and he was nice as can be. Even was able to check out the Roslyn banks when a friend recently moved there. Tough spot to skate, It Aint Easy!
My god!
I love this channel!
Been subscribed for a couple of years now and it just gets better and better, keep up the good work Aron.
I can’t believe you cut out the front shuv in that line in “yeah right.” I feel like that was the most satisfying part if it.
Brandon B blew all that shit up IMO
So glad this series is back.
Hey man, awesome video! Thanks for getting around to Gino. Would love to see more episodes of retro rippers soon!
Happy to see the series come back! I really hope lifes picking up for you man.
Retro rippers Mat Hensley, Pat Duffy or Sean Sheffey would be great! Love this series a lot, ty rad rat.
Please make something about Anthony Pappalardo. His story ties in great with your view on the troubles of being pro as far as what happens after skating and the risk of being dropped off your sponsors. I think he is a very overlooked skater who has definitely had a big impact on the style of skating today. At least on the more underground side of things.
NOBODY WENT ON THE CHOCOLATE TOUR !! Including Gino Ianucci. ask him. Lol that is just the title of a video. " Chocolate tour has acting scenes due to Spike Jones that the skaters were forced to film . F Y I : It was Eric Koston pretending to be Charlie Chaplin in "Mouse" video incase you thought it was really Chaplin. The cop in chocolate tour is Tony Ferguson and the orderly is played by Mark Gonzalez. It's a sk8 movie . Not an actually coast to coast skate tour, so nobody went on the chocolate tour as it was not a tour . Lol.. anyways love the channel and not being negative ... Props for talking about Gino either way.
Pretty impressive career for a guy who never once bent his legs to do a trick :)
He must be like 8 foot 9 tall lol once I read this it really stood out how sick but weird is that he literally looks like he is not even putting pressure on his back foot
9:39 "...it's really thick. It's really stiff and it's kinda hard to ride." *winks*
lol
Can you please do Steve Olson from Shortys?!?!
IKR, real elusive guy lol.
Although if he can't find anything on Olsen I wouldn't mind a video about Rosa lol 😊
It's the one everyone wants, but noone will do. He's not that elusive. He works in a skateshop in Washington state.
I'm pretty sure he lives in California now. I'm not sure, maybe he moved back to Washington. Anyways, Steve Olsen is a super nice guy. He does hip-hop and recorded some stuff with a few of my friends from Washington. We had all dinner one night, he shared his fries with us and I got to ask him a few questions about his time with Shorty's. Couldn't be a nicer guy.
Olson had a style you can't forget!
you could use the tony hawk special trick sound to censor the bad words
YES
nakeyjakey?
Id totally buy rad rat boards
Great informative, interesting and entertaining little documentary style video as always. As someone who never had a ton of exposure to the larger skateboarding scene or pro parts growing up it's so cool to have these videos as a resource, I've heard of and seen a lot of the people you've covered around but never really knew much about them. Thanks for putting so much work into your uploads, I know you only do it as a hobby.
Thank the skate gods nothing has happened to Gino. He's still killing it. Sick video, Rad Rat.
J. Long spent his best years locked up, high, on parole. The skate gods are dicks.
Gino is one of the most stylish skaters ever, he taught people that pulling a trick with style was better than pulling some crazy trick that u can barely pull off, u can tell he influences the whole FA and hockey team
Hell yeah, Gino is he of those guys I'm happy to just watch push! Hope you get it now, Gino just has such a timeless style.
I didn't care about Gino personally until I watched this video, looked it up, and realized he grew up literally in my town. He's one of my favorites now lol
I'm happy your making videos again I hope your doing good and life is treating you well.
In 98-99, we renamed Nollie Backside Heelflips “Gino flips.”! You had to skate with him and witness first hand juxtaposed to just watching vids
Where’s Lindsey Robertson at now? The original heelflip king before Neen Williams
I loved this episode. I also didn't know how good he skated back then
The 360 manual was Adam McNatt in celebraty tropical fish
I was just looking to see if anyone noted this yet.
MORE RETRO RIPPERS PLEASE
not many people cover this and it is a great addition.
peace out rad rat 🤟
So dope! Thanks for doing these. I'd totally love to order that t-shirt if they ever came available. XXL please!
My favourite video part is on Chocolate Tour with that GZA tune...
Pure style!
Chocolate Tour, GZA - Publicity (instrumental)
Absolutely! "Gino's skate park?? No, Gino's skate paaaartttt"
Gino's backside flip over the planter in Yeah Right is one of the most stylish tricks of all time.
30min long Retro Rippers ! I’m in ;-) Thanks for the amazing work !
Most skaters pull off tricks where this Gino gives back to skating with his style and finesse, the most natural skater I've even seen!
It’s interesting, I used to think the same thing about Gino. We’re the same age and I saw yeah right around the same time, so it makes sense. I did always remember that he skated fast and had some great back 3s tho.
Just looking 4 gino videos i cross with this one and i got to say, amazing work.
9.42 - Radrat you absolute player... I'm blushing.
haha missed that! skills
You should do a profile on Diego Bucchieri
MOST DEFINITLEY!
Please show The Butcher
@@z96109 dude yes I remember he was the few skaters I first saw when I was starting out
My first real board was a Think Bucchieri in like '00 or '01. Black with blue flames or something like that, hard to remember after almost 20 years, lol. Diego slayed!
That guys like Markovich and The butcher are barely even remembered is why I still don’t understand all the hype for Gino.
Love the skaters you pick for this!
8 years without skating... But I'm finding all your videos really interesting
Great vid once again!
Maybe make one about Heath Kirchart?
That’s a guy worth a vid.
he works at black bar in los angeles
Gino is so Long Island haha. I don't think this guy gets him... I dont think youd consider that "high" fashion; maybe streetwear.
I like the research information this show brings 👌
So glad your making videos again man...👍🏼
Awesome video! Always a good watch
I learn so much watching your videos!
You’ll never know how much I needed this
good to see this series back, thx!
Life's hard and that's why I enjoy hearing Gino Iannucci's story. I've been a fan since Trilogy 101. It blew my mind , tell me this has happened to someone else?
You need do a retro rippers on Rick Mccrank
Retro rippers is my favorite thing you put out. Keep it up
thanks for the great content, I love your videos
9:40 😏😏😏
I’m from L.I. We all skated with the SHUT crew in the late 80,$ then to become ZOO YORK . I got to skate with tons of guy that were so talented. So many didn’t make it Gino was one that did. So dope that kid was so tech but always landed.
Glad you got this one. Be nice to see some more of the old school NYC dudes get some shine. If you need any names hit me up.
Oh BTW that bank to nose slide at STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY at the QUAD is so steep and so big you don’t get a real respect of how hard it is.
Love this series and I'm happy to see you making it again.
Roslyn banks was my hometown spot. One thing that’s not obvious about those banks is how shitty the ground is and how there are large bumps in the curb landing. I remember seeing the Chocolate team when I was a teenager, they were filming for the Chocolate Tour. It was the first time I had ever seen pro skaters. Stevie Williams was there, Keenan. I watched Gino try to do a couple of tricks on the first bank, he would miss, and then do an effortless kickflip over the second bank first try. An incredible skater with effortless style in an area that was not heavy with a lot of skateboarders at the time.
keep this series going man.
holy shit i used to stare at that photoshopped ad every day just wanting those shoes so bad how did i never notice haha
Rad Rat lookin like powdered toast man without his glasses
"Quick, man. Cling tenaciously to my buttocks."
Hey rad rat I found that clip of the 360 manual you were talking about. It’s in Celebrity Tropical Fish and it was done by Adam McNatt
i'm so happy to back in the nineties, even if ti's just for a moment. this is a fantastic episode about a skater i never even heard of.
So Gino wasn`t known for technical skating in general because YOU started skating somewhere around 2000 and Yeah Right was what you saw... Do you see anything objectively wrong with with your subjective opinion here?
The 09:20 line.. "Look, he is not wearing his Axion model here". Well, how could he in 1994 (that`s when 20 Shot Sequence came out), THREE years before Axion was even founded?
You throw the word "research" around a lot, but it seems to be often very superficial to say the least. And allow me to make a perhaps unfair statement here myself: a person whose favorite skate video is the utterly barren, soulless and uninspired Darkstar`s Battalion, should not try to make himself into a skate historian.

love the series ...the history of skating is so interesting..keep up the good work
Great episode - Thanks!
Our skate boi bringing back Retro Rippers! Yeeeeewww
Since Iannucci, that move is rare ! Only a mere few skaters seem to have made them on video recently, such as Carlos Ribeiro from Primitive, also i think Rodrigo TX and Paul Rodriguez have.
if FA dilutes its brand out it wouldnt be the same
Retro Rippers might be my favorite segment. But I like them all so it's difficult to say.
People don’t know that the curb riding off the Roslyn (sp?) banks, the crack on the curb was really thick and made tricks down it way tougher; people have put bondo on it and Gino has said he doesn’t think that’s too legit because the crack off the curb was a huge part of that spot being so impressive
Can we get a retro rippers on Paul Alexander?

I've been skating on and off since 2001 too and I've only landed a handful of frontside 360's. Never did a backside one. I feel your pain Rat.
Adam McNatt did the 360 to mannie, it's on celebraty tropical fish, old Powell vid
Don't know what commenting for the algorithms means, but I'm gonna do it anyway because other people are. Love the vids bro.
one of your best episodes for sure
Great video as always RR 🤘
Great episode!!
Great channel!! Chris Dobstaff next??
Laurentprimeau he was amazing then basically quit,
wow very underrated skater, never heard of him. Definetely got the mullen influence.
FOWST lol
One of the best vids yet!
I think what Rad Rat is missing in his worldview of skating is this - style is the most important. Gino is maybe smoothest skater all time, at least top 5. A trick with a lower difficulty nailed at a good speed with smooth style almost always trumps a crazy tech trick done sloppily. Rad Rat must skate faster!
Nice video man! Keep it up
Just found your channel. Good job from the UK ✅
Would be really cool to see Chris Senn or Simon Woodstock. Your channel is great
gino was wearing dunks in that switch flip sequence not axions. the photoshop is funny but it's not an axion replacement. Also most OG's push mongo when they skate switch. JB Gillet still pushes switch mongo. Man you not getting why they would use the name fucking awesome says a lot about what you don't get about skateboarding . couldn't finish this one . Bummed me out . Hope the next one is better
Your comment sounds pretty skateboarding elitist which is almost ironic. He’s just talking about brand naming from a marketing perspective.
@@mrburns805 having a name like that is good marketing . It had already been built up in the streetwear / skate world before there was even a team or a full on company. Knowing that kids will want something that a lot of adults wouldn't approve of is part of understanding the mindset of youth and skate culture. Skateboarding elitist ? i guess man , whatever . Him not understanding why Gino was so sick was weird to me, on top of the Tom Penny thing, then the miss information on the shoes was just a lot of things to be off for someone trying to give skate history info.
Cameron Others I actually left a comment saying I used to think the same things. I think it’s because we’re the same age. My first exposure to Tom Penny was from sorry and I first saw Gino in Yeah right. Tbh they weren’t outstanding parts and I had always read about how these guys were legends in magazines. It didn’t make sense. I get it now after I learned their history, but as a kid I thought they were overhyped. I kinda get what you’re saying about the fucking awesome thing but imo it actually comes off kind of corny. To each their own though.
@@mrburns805 i get that. the tom penny stuff in sorry wasn't all amazing. there were a few cool clips in there but definitely not his best. Gino's part was one of my favorites but i'm older than you guys and my concept of style had already been well developed for years by the time yeah right came out. I was way hyped on Koston and a few other parts at that time but i liked Gino's spots and trick selection with his style. Kinda like how people hated on pappalrdo's part in fully flared but that was my favorite part in the video because it was different and the song was sick, and the spots were out in the streets and raw looking. I like all kinds of skating . i just tend to lean more towards different looking things opposed to the standard stuff. I also grew up running into a lot of really talented skaters at spots. So my take was everyone is good but who looks cool doing it. Really its all subjective though. Came up in an era of skating that was a whole lot rougher and harsh so certain things bother me a lil bit but nothing too serious, definitely didn't come here to hate just wanted to clear somethings up. Bout to go skate in a few hope you're having a good time wherever you're at . peace
Great videos!!!
