I’d rather see shoe companies stick around than some new grip that half the industry will take a decade to accept as an actual thing. It’s bad enough that Adio isn’t a thing anymore.
When I tried the dkl grip I got a new deck and also tried a pair of ES skate shoes for the first time and honestly didn't have any transition issues at all with grip and shoes. Been skateing the DKL grip on my next 3 decks and based on the appearance of the same shoes you wouldnt think I skate at all. Only down side is if it gets a little moisture on it will get a little slick
Still skating it? Still liking it? Are you kind of a chill skater or do you do a lot of technical street skating, ledges, harder flip tricks things like that?
Best review I've seen on DKL. I already have a couple of rolls lying around, I'll have to make time to apply it (and try to sand it properly) :) Thanks!
I skate such rubber tape. Its good until dust in streets. And until you start doung combos with bigspin outs. Or high ollies. Not enough grip makes skate tricks lower Shoes do not wear off at all. 2% damage in 60 days
X88X I tried it last weekend and I sweat a lot! So much that I ended up getting the nose of my board wet just from picking it up between attempts. So I was jumping over an stack of pizza boxes with this condition, my nose was half wet but I did not noticed any problem with it. Also, it dries really easy.
I used this stuff. The first time it was great. Then I got a new board. I put it on there and then where I flick for Heelflips in about 3-4 days, that spot turned completely flat.
Wow thanks for this actual review, so in depth! As a starting skateboarder I will gladly invest in a new deck every few months, it's not so pricey, but the shoe decay seems so fast to me that it literally stops me from skating much more often. It seems to me that if I was to skate every day for few hours, the shoe won't last a month. And only ONE shoe cost almost as much as a new deck. Any advices how do deal with this would be great. But I guess trying this rubber grip could be a way.
great review! i really really want to try this grip because I'm about to start riding some fresh Lakais. They are selling it online at one store in australia for $30. which is pretty ridiculous BUT given my shoes cost $90 and decks last about a month its fairly worth it if I'm adding a month to the life of my shoes. its such a shame seeing a great pair get brutalised and lose their tread after a month or two so when i heard this grip had legs i was super stoked! thanks agian mate!
I feel so lucky that it doesn't take me a long time to get used to a new setup. I have pretty loose trucks and my friend likes really tight trucks. Whenever I use his board it only takes me a few minutes to get used to it
I skated this in a sort of dusty/sandy skate-park and it became dirty which is not an issue but it also made it kinda slippery, i mean the tricks still grip the same but when you set up up for tricks its kinda slippery which can make transition skating a little sketch. Just wondering if anyone else had this issue. I am gonna try different shoes and see if that makes a difference. But overall its been really great. Kickflips feel incredible for some reason and its also easier to do those really fun boned ollies.
I was not ready for the impossible lol honestly from judging a book by its cover, I was expecting a few no comply variations and nothing else lol u just don't look like the type to bust out a kickflip and impossible. But great test better than the others on TH-cam! keep it up bro! love the channel. Just subbed
The instructions on the sanding of the edge of the non abrasive is to do a pretty thorough job. Like, until you get to the clear level. Is there a chance you tried too hard to save your edge and didn’t sand it as recommended? Is that possibly why it peeled? Not implying anything…genuinely curious.
so glad I found your channel. loads of in depth information. can you please talk about style versus the kinds of tricks one lands. should one focus on clean effort looking tricks or the amount of tricks regardless of how it looks...
I guess this grip is really dependent on how fast you go through boards vs shoes. When I was at my peak in skating, I'd buy a new board every 2-3 weeks. I'd guess my shoes would last a month or two, and I'd say 90% of my shoes were Es Accels. They just feel great and last a pretty long time. Nowadays, I might go for a grip that would save my shoes since my boards last a lot longer primarily skating transition, but when I was breaking myself off on stairs, ledges and rails, I'd rather just keep a bargain roll of the cheapest grip on hand since I'd be setting up new decks frequently. At one point I used to spend an evening gripping all my boards (I bought blanks by the box) and just keep them in the trunk of my shitty car with a cordless drill for a quick change.
I have been skating this grip for the past half a year with one pair of lakai newports. They still look brand new. This grip has helped me to progress FAST because i would have to stop skating due to holes in my shoes, i even have a scar on my foot from heelflipping all the way through my shoe and ripping my skin. This grip doesnt allow that to happen. I will never buy regular grip tape again. Give DKL a try. Atleast for one setup.
idk, I've seen a few others try this grip tape too. the thing is I generally wear out my shoes all around as apposed to having mint shoes except where I rub them on grip tape. the soles, support and cushion usually are just as worn out by the time I need shoes over a hole in the side. it definitely does save the grip touching areas a bit. but in general idk it'd save all that much money for me. we are still sweating in, pushing, sliding, running, jumping, and bending the shoes all to shit. you are likely still going to need new shoes pretty often if u skate often.
I think DKL has a special instruction video on how to sand down the grip to prevent it from peeling. I'm definitely wanting to try this, even if just to have as one of several setups. I hope some European distributor starts selling this, because I don't feel like paying up to 60 bucks, including shipping, import tax, etc. for a sheet of grip.
How does grip tape effect your pop shoves.. I could do a perf pop shove without griptape on the board😂 I rode this stuff... It works the exact same as normal grip.. The only things I found were that is peels up in the heat, harder to grip, and the grip became less grippy the more you skate it..
You may not have noticed, cause you wear chunky shoes, but DKL Griptape is a little cushiony/shock absorbent. I wear slim vulcanised shoes and skating with this grip provides for a softer landing (as supposed to regular grip).
so then does suede really matter as an upper if youre skating non-abrasive grip? I like grippy grip but the newer tech synthetic suede uppers are pretty dope and its specifically made for that purpose at a bit of a premium price.
I don't care about not being able to spray paint my board, but I don't like how it's wearing the sides of the grip. Maybe I'll test it out sometime, thanks for the video!
Honestly I always thought people were total suckers for buying $70+ pro model shoes to skate in. Just pissing your money away. For average skaters without a ton of disposal income to replace shoes they might be more apt to get those nice shoes if they use this grip.
It would have been cool to see the shoes at the two week point. The wear at the bottom of the sole could potentially have been from pushing, that seems to me to be a credible hypothesis given that the upper sole/toe cap area was as near as makes no difference untouched
I have been using it for Boneless tricks to protect my hands and it totally works. I had the same issue as you with it peeling up, but mine is way worse. Probably because I keep my skateboard in the truck of my car and it gets really hot here in Florida. What is your opinion of the DKL grip performance for the Boneless tricks you do?
It helps a lot for handed stuff like fingerflips and bonelesses because it doesn't rip up your fingers. They told me that the adhesive reacts to heat, so it might have some trouble in the trunk. I leave my board in the house, so I haven't had as much trouble.
Thanks for the info. I was not aware DKL grip's sensitivity to heat. I might have to leave my board in my house from now on. Other than that, I am loving DKL grip. It might very well be the best technology to come to skateboarding in a long time.
For me the draw backs are. (1) The slight peeling. It’s not much but it does happen. Just looks a little less good. (2) Harder to cut and cut well. (3) Too much dust or sweat and if you’ve not brought something to wipe it down with you’ve lost a fair amount of grip and if it gets too wet it gets to be slippery instead. But the benefits are so clear. (1) Shoes don’t die which means you save money and you can look good while riding that much longer. Just get the shoes you want instead of what is cheap. (2) Easier to move your feet around to reposition. I swear normal grip feels like glue by comparison.
I appreciate you put a 2-week update in there. It's hard to find a long-term review like that. Are you still riding this grip tape? I'm curious how long it lasts. What happens when you wear the grip tape totally smooth and how long does that take? I like the idea that I might be able to skate with canvas shoes. But even with regular skate shoes tricks like caspers and no comply impossibles are ripping up my shoes and laces like crazy.
having it applied on my dinghy, which is a mini cruiser, hope it's good! Since I use mostly on day to day stuff and I want to be able to use normal shoes too and not have to worry much about if what I'm using to work on get destroyed because I played a bit on the dinghy, I think it'll be a nice fit, and then I'll see if it's worth getting it on the regular board
Hey just subbed due to the amount of detail in the testing. Heard about this griptape recently and wanted to check it out. A lot of other reviews on it arnt using new shoes or doing as much skating on it as u did here. Great work...not sure if I want to get it or not thu due to it peeling and being super grippy at first. I did hear they are suppose to be coming out with a new version of it soon.
Good review, definitely worth it. I usually ride Jessup, but the one problem with it is that it's too thin and therefore chips on the first sesh. So I've tried Mob but it's too grippy for my like (I wanna try the less grippy m-80) so I have to sand it down a little, but then it's perfect. Next grip I'm gonna try is Grizzly, it's a bit less grippy than Mob but lasts more/or so I've been told. No skate shop (maybe only a couple, maybe) is gonna support any non aggressive griptape, because about %75-85 money at the skateboarding industry is coming off skate shoes... Anyone remembers NoRip griptape about a decade ago? probably not, this is gonna be exactly the same - you'll have to specially order it from the company or off eBay 'till it disappear, sucks.
How does it feel for casper flips and pogos? I know on my regular grip it tore my shoelaces almost immediately.(well after about 20-30 minutes of casperflip variations/practice)
Thanks for the video it really helps out. My mom just bought me new shoes for skating yesterday and they already have a hole in them so you making this video lets me know that I can still skate lol thanks man!
I don't think that's the case. I got this grip, and it peels off even when its just laying around, just because of elastic force. It definitely needs some extra adhesive around the edges.
I wouldn't get this stuff unless it actually stopped shoes from getting torn up. Here it seems like it just takes a longer time for the shoes to get torn up which I can also achieve by buying durable shoes. Thanks for the review anyway.

I wonder if it'd work on my home made snow skates
I just buy some tough toe for my shoe, endless kick flips for days, one of my favorite products ever. Wish I had it when I was younger.
Try putting that stuff on a tech deck
But than my fingers will never get filed😂
Hey radrat, their site got recently updated where they said they fixed the peeling issue
I always wondered what if you could just use the same material as the shoes your wearing
Prob peeled off cause it already had griptape on thendeck before not a good mating surface
I did hear they are suppose to be coming out with a new version of it soon.
this video was great, I wanted more info about the non abrasive grip tape
So basically buy 3 grip tapes set and let it last you the year rather then 3 sets of shoes. Sounds good to me
Could watch youre channel aaaalll day!!! Keep it up
whats the name of the trick at 3:30?
Thanks for the review brother! I'm 46 and just got my self a new board . Have not skated in 2 decades LOL! This is what I needed to know moving fwd.
I recently bought the griptape and it's great. however, I too have issues with the peeling of the griptape. it's a little annoying
pickjesus24 super glue worked for me.
I bet this grip is really good for darkslides
Did you try how it goes when the griptape is wet?
Wonder how it would work for a freestyle setup? No-handed 50/50s tear my shoes apart.
there's something about your kickflips that just make me smile :)
Hey Mr Rad Rat can you do an episode on the old New Wave boards?
How about when it's slightly damp?
How does it feel for casper flips and pogos? I know on my regular grip it tore my shoelaces almost immediately.(well after about 20-30 minutes of casperflip variations/practice)
It felt fine. I'd worry about the tail peeling a bit if you did a lot of caspers, but I only did a few.
Why do you use Phillips bolts??
Can we get an update on the dkl griptape now?
what qualifies as "extremely grippy"? I've always used black magic
I skate this and you have to file it off to get the best results. No razor
yo rad rat! can you do a garrett hill style front foot impossible???
Thanks for the video it really helps out. My mom just bought me new shoes for skating yesterday and they already have a hole in them so you making this video lets me know that I can still skate lol thanks man!
That griptape is probably for parks, those basketball courts have really weird textures and mess up regular grip as well.
my shoe has a huge hole on the side so i keep breaking the skin on my feet and have to keep putting band aids on
Ninjistic go get a cheap pair of vans
Nick Samuel that would be a terrible idea dude
Wow, nice video. Thanks for using my music here :D
What a coincidence I'm riding a skateboard too :D
This was very informative, thx
I think it was peeling up because one their website it says to let the adhesive sit for 24 hour and I don't think he did
I don't think that's the case.
Jesup grip? And how did u grind that down?
