"This isn't a very good way for midas's power to work"
" So, what if midas' power was to rearrange the gold using the atoms? This is makes a funky gold with tiny microscopic gaps, which is progress.."
I know right
I dont quite get why though..? the duck is mostly water and lighter elements so if those same atomes turn to gold how come they are suddenly too close to each other..?
@yak B. because most stuff in our body is made from molecules, but when each atom turns into a gold atom the molecules fall apart releasing some energy and also gold atoms which are initially as close to each other as original atoms in the molecule were, are now much larger so they get violently pushed apart?
I have no idea how they calculated what the energy of that explosion would be though...
@@markinipannini I read up on it now and not quite.. its just that gold atoms are much much larger than most of the atoms in the duck (water, helium) so if each of them swells up there is suddenly much less space available between the atoms. Now GOld is naturally denser than water but gold atoms are so much larger that it becomes too dense even for gold. Thats what threw me off originally

The lesson here is that pre-scientific storytellers rarely stopped to think about the implications of the powers they were giving their characters.
> rarely
... you mean they did at _all?_ :V
I mean according to another comment, the original Midas could turn grass blades to gold but not the actual earth. So I contend the real lesson is that pre-scientific myths were more aware of the implications than we realize! (jk of course...)
ahh yes cause post scientific storytellers have ALWAYS thought about the implications of the powers they were giving their characters.
The irony here is that the entire point of the story of King Midas is about the implications of the power he had
"Pre-scientific" storytellers were usually relating a moral, something practical or positive attitudes that people should think about and apply to their own lives and relationships. There's a lot more to life than just science.

The universe in a nutshell, methinks.
Life in a nutshell.
Lesson: We need to make midas have a contraption that prevents him from touching the ground
One little detail I liked is that the water never turned to gold in the video.
In the original myth, water was either a means of reverting the gold back into its original form or simply just the one thing immune to Midas' cursed blessing.
Funny, cause that’s not what happened in the Aladdin adaptation
There was some kind of divine limiting agent in the original story. Midas danced on the earth barefoot and only the blades of grass turned to gold.
I think water was involved in reversing the curse in the Ducktales 2-parter, too.
Why is the water turning into gold in the thumbnail-
In the original myth, when Midas touched his daughter she turned to gold. Midas prayed to God to relieve him of his foolish wish, and he instructed Midas to take his daughter and wash her in the river. She came alive again and his curse was lifted. The water itself is just a symbol of the cleansing power of God, while the myth is specifically about the hubris of wishing for great wealth without regard for consequence. Water doesn't have magic powers in the story, it's all about God giving and taking away - the water is just symbolism, like the rest of it.

What I learned from this video: Magic is just the distortion of physics. Therefore Black Holes and Hyperdrive is legit magic. Ontop of that, gold is more dense than I imagined. I've never physically interacted with a bar, but it is probably heavier than it looks.

This is one of those funny moments about Bank robbery movies. The next time you see a guy in such movie running away with a bag full of gold nuggets, consider that one nugget weights about 13 kg.

The lesson was: Make sure Midas doesn’t trip.

Midas might have benefited from gloves made of woven gold thread. Flexible, but immune to his touch since it's gold already.
The lesson I'm taking from this is that certain actions have a bad impact on our only home in space, Earth. We should do our best at avoiding these harmful actions, regardless of the profit we may get from embracing them.

If there’s one thing I learned, changing matter on large scales almost always goes south nearly immediately…
If people are wondering how the third example can have liquid water despite the planet being lethally hot, its because at higher pressures water will remain liquid at higher temperatures than normal, and same thing with the reverse, lower pressures will have water boil at lower temperatures than normal. Mars is an example of the latter, which is why water will boil on Mars despite not reaching the normal boiling point of water. So, Golden Earth V3 is hot enough for no life to survive, but not hot enough to pass the boiling point threshold of that high pressure.
I _was_ wondering about that, thanks!
Plus water's specific heat is much higher than air's- there probably wouldn't be enough energy in the atmosphere to boil away even a lot of the water.
Specific heat of water is 4x air at STP, and there is something like a thousand times as much mass in the oceans as in the atmosphere.
I just wonder why the water did not turn to gold as well. But thanks anyway :D
Thanks!
The water should be gold
